Norway’s Equinor is Shopping for New Assets in the Marcellus Shale

    March 24, 2026March 24, 2026

Norway’s Equinor (formerly Statoil) is expanding its U.S. shale gas footprint, specifically targeting the Marcellus Shale to increase “portfolio longevity.” This strategic move is part of a broader global reshuffling in which Equinor is divesting from mature assets in regions such as Azerbaijan and Nigeria to reinvest in high-growth areas. The U.S. remains Equinor’s largest international development hub, and the company aims to boost non-Norwegian production to 900,000 barrels per day by 2030. By focusing on non-operated positions in Appalachia and the Gulf of Mexico, Equinor is “high-grading” its portfolio to relocate capital toward more sustainable, long-term production assets. Speculation on SWPA Location of NextEra’s 4.3-GW Gas-Powered Site

    March 24, 2026March 24, 2026
    Southwestern PA counties

Last week, the Trump administration announced “South Mon,” a $17 billion natural gas-fueled facility in southwestern Pennsylvania intended to expand domestic energy production (see Trump Admin Announces $17 Billion Gas-Fired Power Plant for SWPA). Part of a $550 billion trade deal with Japan, the hub will be operated by NextEra Energy Resources and generate 4.3 gigawatts (GW) of power. By tapping into the Marcellus and Utica shale regions and connecting to the PJM regional transmission network, the project aims to meet rising demand, lower energy costs, and create local jobs. Speculation is running rampant on exactly *where* this new power plant will be located in southwestern PA. Read More “Speculation on SWPA Location of NextEra’s 4.3-GW Gas-Powered Site”

Another Ruling in EQT Case re Green County Contaminated Well Water

    March 24, 2026March 24, 2026

In July 2022, MDN brought you news of a possible frac-out, or “inadvertent return” that happens when drilling mud pops out of places where it’s not supposed to — places outside the borehole being drilled (see Possible Frac-Out Reported at EQT Well Site in Greene County, PA). A landowner who lives near a well being drilled and fracked by EQT in Greene County, PA, complained that her water well was fouled by EQT’s drilling and that a nearby abandoned well was releasing fluids and natural gas. According to the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP), EQT confirmed some of its fluids were “communicating” with the abandoned well. Three area landowners who were not happy with EQT’s response to the situation launched a class action lawsuit two years later (see New Freeport Residents Sue EQT for Contaminated Water in Greene Co.). That lawsuit, David Hice v. EQT Corp., continues. We have a court ruling from last week to report on. Read More “Another Ruling in EQT Case re Green County Contaminated Well Water”

Hull Street Energy Buys 2 PJM Gas-Fired Peakers That Use 20 Bcf/Yr

    March 24, 2026March 24, 2026

Hull Street Energy (HSE) has entered an agreement to acquire two peaking power plants from Rockland Capital, LP, significantly expanding its Milepost Power portfolio. The acquisition includes the 677-megawatt (MW) Lee County Generating Station in Illinois and the 586-MW Tait Electric Generating Station in Ohio. Both facilities operate within the PJM electricity market, providing essential fast-start resources and grid stability amidst tightening supply-demand dynamics. Upon closing later this year, HSE’s total generation capacity will reach nearly 5,000 MW, establishing it as one of the largest private power producers in the United States. U.S. Senator Alan Armstrong (Okla.)

Today, Alan Armstrong, the former CEO of Williams, will be sworn in on the Senate floor as the newest U.S. Senator for Oklahoma, replacing Markwayne Mullin, who was officially voted on (accepted by) the Senate yesterday to replace Kristi Noem as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. While it will be great to have someone with Armstrong’s energy knowledge and pedigree in the highest halls of power, there is one problem with Armstrong as the next Senator from Oklahoma. Physicist Debunks the “Too Much CO2 in the Atmosphere” Argument

    March 24, 2026March 24, 2026

Dr. Kelvin Kemm is a South African nuclear physicist and past Chairman of the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa). In an article on the Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) website, Kemm highlights a political exchange in which Senator John Kennedy exposed a climate advocate’s lack of knowledge about atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Kemm clarifies that CO2 levels are merely 0.04% of the Earth’s atmosphere, illustrating this with a 10,000-golf-ball analogy in which only one “yellow-dotted” ball represents human-added emissions since the 1860s. M-U Rigs Even @ 39; Haynesville Even @ 54; Nat’l Count Down 1 @ 552

    March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

Three weeks ago, the Marcellus/Utica saw a realignment in rig counts, at least in Ohio and West Virginia. Pennsylvania kept the 20 rigs it has had since early February. Ohio lost two rigs, going from 13 to 11, the fewest active rigs in the Buckeye State since last September. And West Virginia picked up one rig, from 7 to 8 rigs, for the first time since last May. Overall, the M-U region had a net loss of 1 rig three weeks ago, bringing the total to 39 active rigs. The same numbers for the M-U held last week—no changes. There are 27 Marcellus-focused rigs and 12 Utica-focused rigs. Read More “M-U Rigs Even @ 39; Haynesville Even @ 54; Nat’l Count Down 1 @ 552”

Study: M-U Still Has the Lowest Methane Emissions of Any Basin

    March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

The Appalachian Methane Initiative (AMI) is a coalition of leading U.S. natural gas companies in the Marcellus/Utica, including Ascent Resources, CNX Resources, EQT Corporation, Expand Energy Corporation, MPLX, and Seneca Resources. AMI uses independent monitoring providers, technical consultants, and top-tier universities to monitor and track methane emissions in the M-U. Last Friday, the group released the findings of its 2025 basin-wide methane monitoring program (the second such study it has done). The report reconfirms that the Appalachian Basin (the M-U) has the lowest methane emissions intensity of any major oil and gas-producing basin in the United States. PA DEP Issues Construction Permit for 4.5 GW Homer City Gas Plant

    March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

Last April, Knighthead Capital Management, Homer City Redevelopment (HCR), and Kiewit Power Constructors Co. announced a plan to convert the former Homer City Generating Station, previously the largest coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania (Indiana County, 50 miles east of Pittsburgh) into a more than 3,200-acre natural gas-powered data center campus, designed to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (see Largest Gas-Fired Power Plant in the U.S. Coming in Western Pa.). At the time, it would have been the largest gas-fired power plant in the country, capable of producing up to 4.5 gigawatts (4,500 MW) of electricity. However, even bigger projects were subsequently announced for Texas and Ohio. Still, at 4.5 GW, this proposed gas-fired power plant is HUGE. Natural Gas Coming to Wyalusing Borough in NEPA via PIPE Grant

    March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

One of the great ironies of the Marcellus Shale is that THE TOP two natgas-producing counties in the state, Susquehanna (#1) and Bradford (#2), both of which are rural, don’t, for the most part, offer the gas extracted from under their residents to their residents for everyday use. It costs a lot of money to run local distribution pipelines to homes and businesses for natural gas. Leatherstocking Gas Company is on a mission to change that. Leatherstocking provides natural gas utility service in Susquehanna and Bradford to some 500+ customers. More customers will soon be added to Leatherstocking’s service in Wyalusing (Bradford County) following a recent PIPE grant. CT DEEP Unnecessarily Delays NatGas Pipe Crossing 2 State Parks

    March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has determined that Eversource Energy’s plan to install a natural gas pipeline through Hurd State Park and the Connecticut Valley Railroad State Park Trail requires a formal Environmental Impact Evaluation, unnecessarily delaying a tiny portion (1.1 miles) of a critically-important reliability project (34.5 miles long). This 16-inch pipeline, a segment of the Southeast Resiliency Project, is designed to provide energy redundancy and security for the region. Questerre Sees New Hope in Developing Canadian Utica Assets

    March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

The province of Québec, Canada, with a huge supply of Utica Shale gas sitting beneath it, passed a new law in 2022 outlawing all oil and natural gas production throughout the province, called Bill 21 (see Quebec Pulls Trigger & Commits Energy Suicide – Bans All O&G Prod.). It was a breathtaking grab of totalitarian power. It’s also energy suicide. Québec said it would pay a piddly $79.5 million (US) to expropriate the oil and gas drilling rights of companies that own them in the province. We’ve seen estimates that those rights are worth more than $5 billion. Questerre Energy, which owns more than 1 million acres of leases and an estimated 6 Tcf of Utica Shale reserves in the province, sued Québec (see Québec May Have to Pay Questerre $4.8B for Utica Drilling Ban). Questerre issued a press release earlier today outlining what it sees as a new hope (our words) for the prospect that the province may change course on drilling in the Canadian Utica.
