Antis Continue to Hammer PA DEP re PennEnergy Creek Water Request

    September 18, 2023September 18, 2023

The Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) continues its delay strategy with a request by PennEnergy Resources to draw water from Big Sewickley Creek for use in fracking operations. More than two years ago, PennEnergy requested permission to draw water from the creek. So far, with the help of anti-fossil fuel groups like FrackTracker and Halt the Harm pressuring the DEP, PennEnergy hasn’t withdrawn a single 8-ounce cup of water from the creek. There’s no indication of when the DEP will issue its ruling.

Emissions Update for Proposed Dominion Peaker Plant in Va.

    September 18, 2023September 18, 2023

Dominion Energy, a huge utility company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, recently revived a plan to build four small “peaker” electric generating plants in Chesterfield County, VA, a Richmond suburb (see Dominion Plans to Build 1,000-MW Gas Peaker Plant Near Richmond, VA). The Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center in the James River Industrial Center calls for building four 250-megawatt gas-fired power plants (1,000 MW total) that can jump into action during the coldest and hottest days of the year to help supply enough electricity for 250,000 homes. Last week, the Virginia Dept. of Environmental Quality (DEQ) shared an emissions analysis for the proposed project with the state Air Pollution Control Board. The meeting drew a contingent of protesters who looked and acted like freaks in a circus show — standard operating procedure for the left.

Freeport LNG Returns to Full Power Following Unexplained Outage

    September 18, 2023September 18, 2023

Last week, MDN tracked a story that developed all week long. The Freeport LNG export facility, located on Quintana Island along the Texas Gulf Coast (south of Houston), is the second largest LNG export facility currently in operation. When operating at full capacity, Freeport can export 2.1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of liquefied natural gas–roughly 20% of the U.S.’ entire LNG export output. A little over a week ago, the facility experienced some sort of issue (Freeport has been silent and refuses to respond), reducing output, at one point, to zero (see Freeport LNG Feedgas Drops to Zero, Indicates Ongoing Outage). Reuters reports that as of Friday, the plant is again operating at near capacity, with 1.9 Bcf/d of natgas flowing into the facility.

PA, OH Groups Join Chorus Telling EPA to Scale Back Power Regs

    September 18, 2023September 18, 2023

Everyone is telling the Bidenistas at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the same thing: Dump the faulty regulations you composed at the last minute that will result in closing most (if not all) of America’s natural gas-fired power plants. The latest group to tell (off) the EPA is a coalition of 87 businesses and associations from multiple states–including Pennsylvania and Ohio. Among the groups in the coalition are the Pennsylvania Independent Oil & Gas Association (PIOGA), the American Petroleum Institute — both the Pennsylvania and Ohio chapters, and the Ohio Oil & Gas Association. The coalition represents millions of people.

DC Hearing Exposes Corrupt Climate Litigation Financing by the Left

    September 18, 2023September 18, 2023

There’s some major corruption going on in the world of the left, and it got exposed last Wednesday at a Congressional hearing on Capitol Hill. The House Committee on Oversight and Reform held the hearing, chaired by Rep. James Comer (Republican from Kentucky). It was a hearing about a distortion of the justice system called third-party litigation funding (TPLF). It is the practice of a party with no direct stake in a lawsuit funding the plaintiff and the plaintiff’s lawyers as they pursue litigation. Example: billionaires like Michael Bloomberg and Big Green groups (funded in part by foreign countries like China and Russia) paying for lawyers for smaller green groups and mom-and-pop plaintiffs to repeatedly sue the oil and gas industry to block drilling and pipelines, or to force a change in regulations. There are, believe it or not, investment funds set up to invest in lawsuits! And the investors (the people with the money) can control whether or not the plaintiffs they are backing can or cannot settle the lawsuit. It is no longer about justice but about money. It is a GROTESQUE bastardization of the entire justice system. And it MUST STOP.

PA Residents Saved from Carbon Tax 7th Time – Missed RGGI Auction

    September 15, 2023September 15, 2023

Thanks to the good work of Pennsylvania’s Senate Republicans, residents and ratepayers across the Commonwealth have been spared a spike in their electricity rates for a seventh time. The state just missed the latest so-called Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) “auction” that forces coal- and gas-fired power plants to pay obscenely high taxes to continue operating. As a bonus, missing the auction denies Democrats in Harrisburg millions of dollars in play money they can line their pockets with (and line the pockets of those who support them). That’s called a win/win!

PA Geologists Building a Map of Rock Layers for Future CO2 Storage

Hydrogen energy is all the rage these days–even though it’s unproven, and there’s no evidence it will ever replace natural gas as a main fuel source. Indeed, there’s plenty of evidence hydrogen will never fully replace gas (see Why 100% Hydrogen Will Never Power Your Home; Why Antis Hate H2). Wrapped up in the “hydrogen is the future of energy” debate is carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), sometimes called CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration). In simple terms, CCS is capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from sources like burning oil and natural gas and storing it deep underground where it can’t (please don’t laugh) toast Mom Earth into a cinder, as the left insists is happening. To store CO2 underground, you must know where it can be safely and permanently done. The Pennsylvania Geological Survey and its partners are building a digital tool and testing hundreds of rock core samples to help others know where the safest places to store CO2 in the Keystone State are located.

Biden EPA Just Cut FERC Off at the Knees re Certifying New Pipes

    September 15, 2023September 15, 2023

In April 2019, President Trump signed an Executive Order (EO) instructing the Environmental Protection Agency to review Section 401 of the Clean Water Act–the section that grants states (and tribes) the right to have a say in pipeline and other infrastructure projects (see Trump Signs Executive Order Making it Harder to Block Pipes). In keeping with the EO, the EPA issued a draft rule in August 2019 tightening up standards used in Section 401, creating new boundaries so states like New York and Washington could not continue to “color outside the lines” by rejecting pipelines for political reasons, as they have both done (see EPA Issues Proposed New Rule for Section 401 Water Permit). The Bidenista EPA issued a new rule yesterday, destroying the Trump-era rule by returning power to the states to block new pipelines as before.

LNG Export Cargoes Down by 8 Last Week; Freeport Restarts?

    September 15, 2023September 18, 2023

U.S. LNG exports dropped in the week ending September 13 compared to the prior week because the Freeport LNG terminal shipped only one cargo during that time. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its weekly natural gas report that 18 LNG carriers departed the U.S. between Sept. 7 and Sept. 13, down by eight cargoes compared to the week before. As we reported yesterday, Freeport is known to have canceled at least 3-4 cargos over the past week (see Freeport LNG Cancels 3-4 Cargoes Due to Outage, Now in 6th Day). Perhaps the situation is now changing. NGI reports pipelines feeding Freeport have begun to increase flows once again–up to 33% of capacity yesterday.

Effort to Impeach DOE Sec Granholm for Lying Under Oath (Perjury)

    September 15, 2023September 15, 2023

Jennifer Granholm, former governor of Michigan and current Secretary of the U.S. Dept. of Energy under dementia Joe, sat before Members of Congress in a hearing and lied to their faces, which is called perjury. Granholm told Congress she does not own individual shares of stocks in companies. She and her husband, in fact, do own stocks. As Secretary of Energy, Granholm promoted companies in which she and her husband own stocks, using federal government money to enrich herself. It’s gross corruption, and it’s perjury. Granholm needs to go. Congresswoman Claudia Tenney from Upstate NY is calling for an impeachment inquiry of Granholm to help the process along.

Report: U.S. has Enough NatGas for 100 Yrs, but Not Enough Pipes

    September 15, 2023September 15, 2023

Yesterday, the Potential Gas Committee (PGC) released its year-end assessment of the nation’s estimated natural gas resource base, “Potential Supply of Natural Gas in the United States,” at an event hosted by the American Gas Association. Experts from the PGC presented the current state of technically recoverable reserves in the United States, providing valuable information on a region-by-region basis. We have the executive summary below. Of particular interest for us was the finding that the U.S. has enough gas to supply current and future needs for the next 100 years! Yet we do not, says the PGC, have enough pipelines to flow it.

    September 15, 2023September 15, 2023

New shale permits issued for Sep 4 – 10 in the Marcellus/Utica continued to be in the crapper. There were 14 new permits issued last week, up 1 from 13 issued two weeks ago, and down from the 16 issued three weeks ago. Not so long ago we routinely saw 30+ issued each week. Last week’s permit tally included 8 new permits in Pennsylvania, no new permits in Ohio, and 6 new permits in West Virginia. The top permittee for the week was Antero Resources, which received six permits in WV.

Record High NatGas Production & Demand in 2023 – EIA Sept. STEO

    September 14, 2023September 14, 2023

Once a month, U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) analysts issue the agency’s Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), their best guess about where energy prices and production will go in the next 12 months. The latest monthly report, issued Tuesday, predicts that U.S. natural gas production AND demand will rise to record highs in 2023. EIA projects that dry gas production will end up at 102.69 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2023 and rise to 104.93 Bcf/d in 2024. The current record high is 98.13 Bcf/d, set in 2022.

Freeport LNG Cancels 3-4 Cargoes Due to Outage, Now in 6th Day

    September 14, 2023September 14, 2023

Three days ago, the feedgas (natural gas) flowing to the Freeport LNG export facility on Quintana Island, TX, dropped to roughly 622 MMcf/d, which is 31% of the facility’s normal capacity of 2 Bcf/d (see Feedgas to Freeport LNG Dropped Last Weekend, Down 69% Yesterday). Two days ago, feedgas flows to Freeport dropped all the way to zero (see Freeport LNG Feedgas Drops to Zero, Indicates Ongoing Outage). Yesterday, feedgas flows resumed, but at a trickle–370 MMcf/d, or roughly 18% of total capacity. Reuters and Bloomberg are reporting Freeport has canceled at least three and possibly four cargo ships that would have loaded at the facility due to the ongoing reduction/outage, which is now in its sixth day.
