NYMEX NatGas Futures Break Thru $6/MMBtu Once Again

    April 6, 2022April 6, 2022

Yesterday the NYMEX Henry Hub futures price (front month) contract rose $0.32 (5.3%) to close at $6.03/MMBtu. That’s the first time since January the price has broken $6. Why the bump in price now? Is it because of the war (everything is blamed on the Ukraine war these days)? Nope. At least, mostly not because of the war. As always, the factors that drive the price of natural gas here in the U.S. are complex. A number of things together are responsible, but mostly (as is usual) it is the weather driving the higher price.

MiQ Says 350 Bcf Responsible Gas Ready to Buy via Digital Registry

    April 6, 2022April 6, 2022

MiQ, one of three major certification authorities that puts its stamp of approval on “responsible gas” production (i.e. low methane leakage), announced two bits of news yesterday that caught our attention. First is that MiQ’s Digital Registry of Independently Certified Gas currently has 350 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of “responsibly produced gas” ready for buying and selling. Second is that MiQ has launched a new certification service called the Certified Supply Chain.

S&P Using Satellite to Guess Methane Emissions from Shale Plays

    April 6, 2022April 6, 2022
    Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite

S&P Global Commodity Insights, a leading provider of information and benchmark prices for the commodity and energy markets, has just launched its new Platts monthly Methane Intensity calculations and corresponding daily methane intensity premiums for 19 separate U.S. natural gas production basins, including the Marcellus/Utica. The new service estimates the volume of methane emissions generated through fossil fuel production by using a single satellite kitted out with something called a TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI). How accurate will the estimates be?

Sleazy Congressional Democrats Target O&G Stock Buybacks, Dividends

    April 6, 2022April 6, 2022

For years (more than a decade) we’ve heard the left criticize shale companies as a “Ponzi scheme” that’s not profitable–drilling new wells to make up for declining production in old wells–all the while bilking investors. People like Ian Urbina of the New York Times tried to paint shale companies as fraudsters, going back more than ten years (see Ian Urbina/NYT Continue Journalistic Malpractice Against the Natural Gas Industry – This Time it’s Fracking). The share price of publicly traded stocks for shale companies fell, in some cases losing more than 90% in value. Now that shale drillers–both oil and natural gas–refuse to drill more so they can clear their debt and return to a more healthy status, the left is not happy again! The left isn’t happy when shale finances are bad, and they *really* aren’t happy when shale finances are good. The latest sleazeball tactic by the left (i.e. Congressional Democrats) is to hold sham hearings in the D.C. swamp to accuse shale drillers of hoarding money, using it for stock buybacks and dividend payments to investors. Well duh! That’s what they’re supposed to do!!

24 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Mar 28-Apr 3

    April 6, 2022April 6, 2022

Last week Pennsylvania issued 14 new shale well permits, with EQT Corp. grabbing eight (seven of them on a single pad in Fayette County), and Coterra Energy (formerly Cabot Oil & Gas) receiving three (all on the same pad in Susquehanna County). Ohio issued ten new permits last week, with three going to a relative newcomer, Utica Resource Operating (same pad in Guernsey Count) and three for Encino Energy (same pad in Harrison County). West Virginia got skunked and shows no new shale permits issued last week. Pity.

NY Ready to Commit Energy Suicide – Ban NatGas in New Buildings

    April 5, 2022April 5, 2022

New York’s corrupt Governor, Kathy Hochul, learned well from her mentor, sexual predator (and extremely corrupt) Gov. Andrew Cuomo, when it comes to forcing her will on the citizens of New York. Cuomo snuck a permanent fracking ban into the state budget two years ago (see Cuomo PERMANENTLY Bans NY Fracking in Now-Adopted Budget). This year Hochul is preparing to sneak in a permanent ban against connecting any new building constructed in the state to natural gas pipelines–no matter where in the state the building is located. This is the death of freedom in NY.

NY Gov Hochul Delays Decision on Seneca Lake Crypto Gas Plant

    April 5, 2022April 5, 2022
    Greenidge Generation near Seneca Lake

New York State has become aggressively hostile to any business remotely connected to fossil fuels. NY is openly prejudiced and discriminates against oil and natural gas companies. In May 2021 we told you about a “bitcoin miner” that uses natural gas to produce electricity to power some serious computers (see Upstate NY Bitcoin Miner Faces Opposition from Enviro-Left). Even though the company is doing its best to atone for its “sin” of using natural gas via buying indulgences (aka carbon offsets), environmentalist wackos oppose the facility located in Dresden (Yates County), near beautiful Seneca Lake (see Upstate NY Bitcoin Miner Defies Enviro-Left, Operates NatGas Plant). The state Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC), under the direction of Gov. Kathy Hochul, has just delayed a final decision about reissuing a Title V Air Permit to operate until June 30th, which happens to be two days after the gubernatorial primary on June 28th.

Manchin Opposes SEC’s Onerous New Climate Reporting Regs

    April 5, 2022April 5, 2022

In March the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), corrupted by the Bidenistas, said it will begin to force all publicly traded companies to disclose their so-called greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the imaginary climate risks their businesses face (see SEC Votes to Force Public Companies to Disclose Mythical GHG Risks). Companies will have to pretend they care about supposed man-caused global warming and cook up hokey methods for evaluating how much carbon dioxide not just their own company, but their customers “emit” into the air when using a company’s products (so-called Scope 3 emissions). It’s an attempt to totally control businesses without actually owning them (Communism, or owning the means of production, without actually calling it that). West Virginia Joe Manchin is fighting against this insanity.

Biden Admin Attacks NatGas – Refuses to Pause Gathering Pipe Regs

    April 5, 2022April 5, 2022

We keep hearing how much Joe Biden now loves natural gas. He promised Europe the U.S. would send the Continent an extra 15 bcm (billion cubic meters) of natural gas this year (see U.S. & Europe Announce New LNG Deal – Very Light on Details). Yet the Biden administration’s actions belie their words of support for natural gas. Example: Last year the Bidenistas initiated a massive power grab of transferring the right of individual states to regulate local natural gas gathering pipelines to the federal government, which is set to happen on May 16 of this year (see Massive Power Grab Proposed by Biden DOT: Regulate Gathering Lines). The oil and gas industry asked Biden to pause the power grab by 3-5 years. The Bidenistas have just rejected that request, proving once again they are willing to stab natural gas in the back, rather than support it.

PA Senate Fails to Override Wolf Veto of RGGI Carbon Tax Bill

    April 5, 2022April 5, 2022

Yesterday the Pennsylvania State Senate failed to override a veto of Gov. Tom Wolf of a resolution that would have stopped PA from entering the so-called Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), an obscene carbon tax scheme. The override failed by a single vote. Wolf’s patsy, Dept. of Environmental Protection Secretary Pat McDonnell, gushed that he was “pleased” with the failure of the override. What happens now? A lawsuit lingers that can still block RGGI, but if that doesn’t work, PA residents will begin paying MUCH higher rates (a new tax) for their electricity beginning July 1st.

Biden’s FERC Slams New LNG Plant Proposal Over “Enviro Justice”

    April 5, 2022April 5, 2022

We keep hearing how the Bidenistas have softened their hardcore opposition to natural gas (and all fossil energy) given the war in Ukraine. We hear words mouthed by the administration, and Biden himself, that seems to indicate maybe, just maybe, the administration will stop its targeting of natural gas–at least for a while. And yet the actual actions we see coming from the administration, like the actions of the Bidenistas at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), say otherwise. Example: Biden’s FERC recently released a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Commonwealth LNG export facility located in Louisiana (full copy below). The draft EIS says the facility will have “significant impacts” on so-called “environmental justice communities.” That’s a loud and clear signal that this much-needed LNG project will have trouble getting approved by the hardcore leftists at Biden’s FERC.

Antis Begin to Turn Against Blending Hydrogen in NatGas Pipes

    April 5, 2022April 5, 2022

You can’t escape mainstream media, and even many in the oil and gas industry, talking about hydrogen. The word is whispered in hallowed tones like a magic talisman. The “future of energy” is (shhhh) hydrogen, we are told. Even anti-fossil fuel cultists love hydrogen, albeit they are prejudiced–they only like certain colors of hydrogen (see Experts Say Forget About Hydrogen “Color” – Just Use & Develop It). However, some antis are now saying hydrogen flowing through existing pipelines and mixed with natural gas to be burned to heat homes or produce electricity in an attempt to lower carbon emissions…won’t work. It’s all just a pipe dream. Those who lead the anti-fossil energy movement are beginning to turn against hydrogen. The vast majority of “me too” cultists who follow them won’t be far behind.

WV Bill Targeting Anti-Fossil Fuel Banks, Investors Becomes Law

    April 4, 2022April 4, 2022

In January a new bill was introduced in the West Virginia Senate requiring the entire state government, all of the various state agencies and governmental departments, to stop doing business with any bank or investment firm that refuses to support coal, oil, and natural gas companies (see WV Bill Bans Using Banks, Investment Cos that Divest Fossil Fuels). We are delighted to report that Senate Bill (SB) 262, which passed both the WV Senate and the House in March, was signed into law by WV Gov. Jim Justice last week. It’s now time to start defunding the defunders! The next step: Creating a list of companies WV will no longer do business with. They’re makin’ a list, checkin’ it twice. Gonna find out who’s naughty or nice.

M-U Drillers Increase Capex for 2022, but Hold Production Even

    April 4, 2022April 4, 2022

RBN Energy took the opportunity of Joe Biden’s big announcement last week (that he will release 1 million gallons of oil per day for the next 180 days) to revisit plans by 40+ crude and natural gas producers for 2022. How much will they spend on drilling this year? And how much will they produce this year? The RBN analysis, especially for the gas-focused sector (largely Marcellus/Utica companies) sees a rise in capital expenditures for drilling this year, but production itself is not predicted to rise all that much. For M-U companies, capex is predicted to increase by 32%, but production only by 10%. However, both of those numbers are somewhat misleading and overestimated.
