PA’s UGI Finally Completes Purchase of WV’s Mountaineer Gas Co.

    September 3, 2021September 3, 2021

In January MDN told you that UGI Corporation, one of Pennsylvania’s largest natural gas utility companies, wants to buy Mountaineer Gas Company, one of West Virginia’s largest natural gas utility companies, for $540 million (see PA’s UGI Corp. Deal to Buy WV’s Mountaineer Gas Company). UGI serves 700,000 customers across PA (and one county in Maryland). Mountaineer serves 215,000 customers across WV. Both companies are big buyers of Marcellus/Utica shale gas. Good news: The deal is now done and Mountaineer is officially a subsidiary of UGI.

Seneca Resources Jumps on “Responsibly Sourced Gas” Bandwagon

    September 3, 2021September 3, 2021

Whether we think it’s a good idea or not (we don’t), there is no denying that the Marcellus/Utica industry has collectively jumped off the RSG/ESG cliff. RSG stands for “responsibly sourced gas” and ESG is “environmental, social, governance.” Responding to pressure from investors and customers, most M-U drillers are now making moves to prove the natural gas they produce has been produced using practices that protect the environment. We say the gas has always been produced responsibly and we have nothing further to prove, but hey, who are we? The latest to join the crowd is Seneca Resources. The company announced yesterday will use Project Canary to certify its natural gas.

Bloomberg Attacks ME2 Pipeline Using ‘Methane Plumes’ in Midwest

    September 3, 2021September 3, 2021
methane plume – in the Arctic!

Will readers of the Philadelphia Inquirer fall for the blatant, misleading, “this has nothing to do with that” scaremongering offered up by the extreme left “reporters” at Bloomberg? The Inquirer is running an “article” (i.e. left-wing propaganda) from Bloomberg that accuses an Energy Transfer pipeline in the Midwest of creating a “methane plume” (which isn’t one, actually). Since ET built and maintains that pipeline, the Bloomberg “reporters” imply the Mariner East 2 pipeline the company is in the process of completing *this year* in Pennsylvania will also be a methane belcher that pollutes Mom Earth and will fry us all. How sad. How sick.

    Enverus Rig Count @ 623 (+2); Marcellus @ 32 (+0), Utica @ 12 (-1)

    September 3, 2021September 3, 2021

The latest weekly Enverus U.S. rig count shows total rigs regained some recently-lost ground to hit almost a new post-pandemic high. For the week ending September 2, the rig count stood at 623, up 2 rigs from the previous week. The Marcellus stayed even and the Utica lost 1 rig from the previous week. Collectively the M-U currently operates 44 rigs.

M-U Production Hits Record High in 1H21 – Most of It Heads Midwest

    September 2, 2021April 20, 2022

Our favorite government agency, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), published a post yesterday noting the Marcellus/Utica region set a new record high for natural gas production for the first six months of 2021. That caught our eye. However, it was a chart in that post that stopped us in our tracks. The chart shows pipeline takeaway capacity to other regions outside of the northeast. We always thought most of our gas went to the Southeast. Not so! The bulk of the gas flowing from the M-U goes to the Midwest.

NYMEX Price Hits New Modern High $4.61 – M-U Spot Prices Climb Too

    September 2, 2021September 2, 2021

On Monday MDN told you that given supplies of natural gas going offline on the Gulf of Mexico due to Hurricane Ida, and given that the hurricane missed major LNG export facilities (meaning they will continue to operate and export gas), the price of natural gas was/is skyrocketing (see NatGas Prices Soar with Hurricane Ida Shutting Down Gulf Production). At the time we told you that according to some analysts, natgas was on its way to a modern-era high of $4.50 or more. Yesterday the NYMEX price at the Henry Hub flew by that level, closing at $4.61. That didn’t take long!

Liberals on PA’s IRRC Vote to Approve Insane RGGI Carbon Tax

    September 2, 2021September 2, 2021

Yesterday the Pennsylvania Independent Regulatory Review Commission (IRRC) voted to approve the final Environmental Quality Board regulation to slap an insanely high carbon tax, euphemistically called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), on PA’s coal and natural gas-fired power plants. The partisan vote was 3-2 (Democrats voting for, Republicans against) in favor of hiking electric rates by an extra $2.36 billion over the next 10 years. Is there any way to stop Gov. Tom Wolf’s illegal entry into RGGI?

Investor Sues Founder of Penn Production for Breach of Contract

    September 2, 2021September 2, 2021

In early August MDN told you about privately-owned Penn Production Group, LLC, which concentrates on exploration and production for oil and gas in western Pennsylvania. Penn Production closed on the purchase of certain assets owned by Greylock Energy in Clearfield County, PA (see Penn Production Buys Greylock Assets in Clearfield County, PA). It was the first time the company had appeared on our radar screen. Since the Greylock purchase, controversy has erupted at the company.

OH DOT to Stop Buying Deicer Made from Conventional Wastewater

    September 2, 2021September 2, 2021

Once again the issue of whether or not to use conventional (not shale) wastewater and its byproducts is in the news. The issue has long been debated in Pennsylvania. Earlier this week we brought you news from a recent study that finds more studies should be done on the issue of using brine wastewater to treat dusty roads in PA (see Study Says More Studies Needed re Using Brine to Treat Dusty Roads). Now comes word that the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) plans to stop purchasing a deicer made from processed brine drawn from conventional oil and gas wells. So-called environmentalists claim the deicer is radioactive.

Southwestern Completes Acquisition of Indigo, Reboots 2021 Guidance

    September 2, 2021September 2, 2021

In early June Southwestern Energy Company announced it would no longer be a pureplay Marcellus/Utica driller. Southwestern said it was buying Indigo Natural Resources, which drills for natural gas in the Louisana Haynesville Shale, for $2.7 billion (see Southwestern No Longer M-U Pure-Play, Buys Haynesville Driller $2.7B). The deed is now done. Southwestern issued an updated version of its guidance for 2021 in light of adding Indigo’s extensive assets to its own.

Chatterjee Joins Big-Money Law Firm, Flacks for Carbon Tax

    September 2, 2021September 2, 2021

August 30 was RINO Neil Chatterjee’s last day at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (see RINO Commissioner Neil Chatterjee Leaving FERC as of Aug. 30). It never takes swamp-dwellers like Chatterjee long to land in a new hole. Just a few days after leaving FERC, Chatterjee announced he (a) joined the energy practice at Big Law firm Hogan Lovells for big bucks, and (b) is also joining the Climate Leadership Council, a far-left group that advocates for a national tax on carbon dioxide. What a pathetic putz.

Royalty Revenue Falls Short of Expectations for Some OH Landowners

    September 1, 2021September 1, 2021

An extensive story running in the Youngstown Business Journal tackles the thorny issue of violated expectations for Ohio landowners who thought they would get rich from Utica Shale wells on their land but didn’t. The article contains some good information and is a cautionary story for landowners. However, we’re concerned the story doesn’t present the full picture–that some landowners DO get significant revenue from royalties and signing bonuses.

Protesters Ask Chester County to Shut Down Mariner East Pipe

    September 1, 2021September 1, 2021

Yesterday a group of ~30 protesters rallied at the Historic Courthouse in Chester County, PA, and marched, while chanting, to the County Justice Center. Their protest is against almost completed Mariner East 2 (ME2) pipeline construction and against a long-completed and flowing Mariner East 1 (ME1) pipeline. The protesters, some who were left wing nuts, others who were honest folks who have been duped by Big Green and scaremongers in the media, asked county commissioners to file a Petition for Emergency Relief with the state Public Utility Commission (PUC) to stop any further construction of ME2 and shut down the already-operating ME1 pipeline that runs through the county.
