Even though Chesapeake Energy posted a $2.1 billion loss for the third quarter, in an analyst call on Friday, Chesapeake CEO Aubrey McClendon (“bad boy” poster child for anti-drillers) said he’s thrilled with the results the company is getting from the Utica Shale.

Gulfport Energy is one of the few Marcellus and Utica Shale drillers who regularly reports on production results for its new wells (something we appreciate!). MDN told previously told you about Gulfport’s “King” of Utica wells, the Shugert 1-1H in Belmont County, Ohio, which produced 20 million cubic feet of natural per day, 144 barrels of condensate per day, and 2,002 barrels of natural gas liquids per day (see this MDN story).
Yesterday Gulfport released numbers for more new wells in Harrison and Guernsey counties in Ohio. Although the methane output of the wells is not spectacular, the condensate and natural gas liquids output is noteworthy. Here’s the latest report from Gulfport:

Although Hurricane turned Super Storm Sandy gave New York City, Delaware and New Jersey a big, black eye (and we grieve for their losses), further inland Marcellus and Utica Shale drillers prepared for and appear to have avoided any major impacts from the storm. Some production was and still is shut in to avoid potential problems, but given the storm is now mostly gone from the Marcellus and Utica Shale region, shut in production should quickly come back online.

It seems the entire country watched with morbid fascination as Hurricane-now-Super Storm Sandy slammed into the northeast yesterday. The exceptionally large and powerful storm—some 1,000 miles across—lingers over what is essentially the Marcellus and Utica Shale region of the U.S. As of early Tuesday more than 5 million people are without power due to storm damage. New York was heavily hit with the highest storm surge to hit Manhattan in over 200 years, flooding subway tunnels and covering some city streets. The New York Stock Exchange is closed for two consecutive days for the first time since 1888. Truly history in the making.
How will Sandy affect drilling, production and refining in the Marcellus? Reports came in yesterday that refineries were shutting down in advance of the storm. Production coming from the field likely will not be affected all that much, but drilling is another matter. Some drilling operators reported they would lay down rig masts until the storm passes.

Dominion Resources (a subsidiary of Dominion) has penned an agreement with M3 Ohio Gathering to hook up to wells in Ohio’s Utica Shale and move up to 180 million cubic feet per day of natural gas from those wells to the Kensington Processing Plant in Columbiana County, Ohio. The new plant is currently being built by Chesapeake Midstream, M3 and EV Energy Partners (see this MDN story for background).

Magnum Hunter announced this morning they’ve purchased 100% of privately-held Viking International Resources, Inc. (“Virco”) for $106.7 million using a stock swap and cash. The deal means Magnum Hunter will get an additional 51,500 net acres in the Marcellus and Utica Shale in West Virginia and Ohio, pushing their total acreage to something just over 166,000 acres throughout the Appalachian region. Management already has it’s eye on the new acreage and has identified 74 new drilling locations in the Marcellus and 31 new locations in the Utica Shale.

GreenHunter Energy, a company specializing in treatment and disposal of fracking wastewater, continues to add new wastewater injection wells to its portfolio. Just today they announced they’ve purchased two more injection wells, one in Washington County, OH and the other in Ritchie County, WV. In February of this year, GreenHunter purchased three injection wells, one of which was also in Washington County, OH (see this MDN story).

An article in the Salem (OH) News points out the false impressions sometimes held by those who oppose or have concerns about fracking. The example they highlight comes from area residents who had concerns about a county park in Mahoning County, OH, not far from Youngstown. The park is called Mill Creek MetroParks—a 4,400-acre park with spectacular views and walking trails, a championship golf course, a working farm and much more.
Residents were concerned about leasing land from the park for Utica Shale oil and gas drilling. Concerns center on contamination of water supplies in the park, land being disturbed with heavy equipment use, truck traffic and the like. Concerned residents learned at a recent seminar held at the park that drilling already happens from neighboring property and there’s been 40+ wells drilled (or being drilled) under the park to date.

The mighty Reuters news agency, no friend of shale gas drilling, is taking aim at the Utica Shale in Ohio. A new article by Reuters attempts to sow the seeds of doubt about the size and potential of the Utica Shale. Their article opens by quoting drilling “bad boy” Aubrey McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake who famously said last year the Utica contains $500 billion worth of hydrocarbons. Reuters’ contention? Don’t believe it.
A key point of the article is that Ohio is only reporting oil and gas production numbers annually, not monthly as other states typically do. That irks Reuters, so they’re spinning it as an industry cover-up to conceal the “real truth” that the Utica is not as productive as McClendon and “the industry” is leading people to believe. It’s the old “it really ain’t all that big, it’s just a Ponzi scheme” meme started by The New York Times last year (see this MDN story).

Although Carrizo Oil & Gas and CONSOL Energy have both either left or stopped drilling in the Utica Shale in Trumbull County, Ohio, energy giant BP says they’re staying the course and expect to drill their first well in Trumbull in April 2013. Of course, BP has a vested interest in making it work in Trumbull—they leased 80,000 acres in the county last year for $331 million.

Our headline is a tongue-in-cheek play on the iconic Field of Dreams statement, “If you build it, they will come.” But this isn’t fiction. It’s a very serious question being asked by residents and political leaders in Youngstown, Ohio: If Youngstown decides to pass an ordinance allowing drilling on and under property within city limits, will any drillers bother to drill there? Answer: No one knows.

A tale of caution for landowners in Ohio and in other areas where landowners have recently signed leases to allow drilling for shale gas. One landowner in Ohio reports being called by a Texas company looking to buy his royalty rights. The landowner already signed a lease and got his signing bonus. The company in question wants to now purchase the man’s future royalty payments—at a discount of course.
This is similar to companies buying other structured settlements—like someone who successfully sues for damages from an accident, but the payments are made over the course of several years. Or someone who wins a state lottery that has a payout over 25 years. Companies will offer to pay you less than what you would make over the course of time, but you get a lump sum payment now, up front.
