New shale permits issued for May 29-Jun 4 in the Marcellus/Utica finally went higher again last week. There were 25 new permits issued, up from the dismal 8 new permits issued the previous week. Last week’s permit tally included 13 new permits for Pennsylvania, 6 new permits for Ohio, and 6 new permits in West Virginia. EQT scored the most new permits with 7 issued in Greene County, PA. Close behind in the #2 position was Antero Resources, with 6 new permits issued in Ritchie County, WV.

Anti-Shale Enviro Groups Demand Update on Pitt Cancer Study

Anti-fossil fuel zealots are demanding an update on a $2.5 million “study” awarded to the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health to “conduct research on the potential health effects of hydraulic fracturing in Pennsylvania” (see Pitt Researchers Get $2.5M for Fake Study to Link Shale & Kid Cancer). The problem is it’s not real research. The study was prompted by an uptick in rare childhood cancers in southwestern PA. Instead of looking for all potential causes of the cancer cluster, only one potential cause was identified–fracking. Ignored is an old uranium dumpsite nearby. The study began (rather, the money was distributed) 2 1/2 years ago. Antis want their ears tickled with half-baked conclusions so they can continue their campaign to smear shale energy. Why doesn’t Pitt help them out?

8 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV May 22-28

New shale permits issued for May 22-28 in the Marcellus/Utica fell again for a second week. There were only 8 new permits issued, down from 12 new permits issued the previous week (and 26 the week before that). This is the latest indicator of a slowdown in gas drilling in our region–the first indicator being a sudden dropoff a few weeks back in the rig count (see U.S. Natural Gas Drilling Rig Count Craters, Down 10% in One Week). Last week’s permit tally included 6 new permits for Pennsylvania, no new permits for Ohio, and 2 new permits in West Virginia.

Last week the top receiver of new permits was PennEnergy Resources, with 5 permits issued in Armstrong County, PA. Chesapeake Energy was second-highest, with 4 permits issued in Bradford County, PA.

DEP Finds Chevron Drilling Did Not Contaminate Water Well with PFAS

Last November, MDN told you about a lawsuit filed by a family in Washington County, PA, against Chevron (now EQT) for drilling and fracking done in 2011-2012 near the family’s home (see PA Lawsuit Blames Chevron Fracking for PFAS Chemicals in Water Well). The lawsuit alleges Chevron used PFAS or “forever chemicals” in the fracking solution, and that those chemicals had leaked into the family’s water well. The PA Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) investigated and recently released the results of its investigation into whether or not PFAS from fracking polluted the water well.

MPLX 1Q – Harmon II Processing Plant Coming Online in 2024

In late 2015, MPLX (i.e. Marathon Petroleum) bought out and merged in the Utica Shale’s premier midstream company, MarkWest Energy, for $15 billion (see MarkWest Energy Investors/Unitholders Approve Merger with Marathon). The “new” MarkWest, aka MPLX, plays on a much larger stage now, including ownership and operation of major assets in the Permian Basin and in the Bakken Shale, in addition to the Utica/Marcellus. However, most of MPLX’s activity (and revenue) comes from the M-U. Yesterday MPLX issued its first quarter 2023 update.

There were 29 new permits issued in total last week (down from 35 the week before), including 24 new permits for Pennsylvania, no new permits for Ohio, and five new permits issued in West Virginia. Last week the top receiver of new permits by far was the largest natural gas driller in the country, EQT Corporation, with 20 new permits split between Greene and Washington counties in southwestern PA.

New shale permits issued for Feb. 5-12 in the Marcellus/Utica increased nicely last week. There were 40 new permits issued in total last week, including 25 new permits for Pennsylvania, 11 new permits for Ohio, and four permits issued in West Virginia. The week before, there were only 26 new permits issued. Last week the top receiver of new permits was Seneca Resources, with six new permits for Tioga County, PA. Coterra Energy received five permits for Susquehanna County, PA. In Ohio, Encino Energy and Ascent Resources both received four new permits–in Carroll and Harrison counties, respectively.

Multi-Year Test of Range Well in SWPA Proves No Air Pollution

Anti-drillers, with the assistance of biased “news” publications like the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, continually make false accusations against the shale industry in the southwestern Pennsylvania area, alleging that fracking is the cause of rare forms of cancer in children (see More Reckless Accusations that Shale Causes Cancer in SWPA Kids). In order to quell these false accusations, Range Resources commissioned and paid for two independent air monitoring studies. We told you about one of the studies, set up in Cecil Township (Washington County), back in June 2020 (see Range Resources Begins New Air Monitoring Test at SWPA Well Site). The results from that study are now in. According to third-party findings, the Cecil study showed no elevated concentration of air pollution in the area.
