    M-U Rigs Even @ 37; Haynesville Up 2 @ 58; Nat’l Up 3 @ 547

    May 4, 2026May 4, 2026

Last week, the combined Marcellus/Utica Baker Hughes rig count remained at 37 active rigs for the sixth week in a row. The M-U’s chief competitor, the Haynesville, added two rigs and now runs 58 active rigs, some 21 more than the M-U. Clearly, drillers are choosing to put their money into the Haynesville over the M-U despite that play’s higher costs because (a) it’s closer to the Gulf Coast LNG export facilities, and (b) it’s easier to build pipelines in Louisiana and Texas than it is in the northeast. The national count added three rigs last week and now operates 547 rigs. Read More “M-U Rigs Even @ 37; Haynesville Up 2 @ 58; Nat’l Up 3 @ 547”

TC Energy Announces $1.5B Expansion to Columbia Gas for Powergen

    May 4, 2026May 4, 2026

Last Friday, TC Energy reported a robust first quarter in 2026, highlighted by a 14% increase in comparable EBITDA to $3.1 billion and record delivery volumes across its North American pipeline network. For the Marcellus and Utica shale region, the standout development is the newly announced $1.5 billion Appalachia Supply Project on the Columbia Gas system. Slated for 2030, this expansion will add 0.8 Bcf/d of takeaway capacity to meet surging electricity and data center demand. Appalachia is explicitly identified as a major contributor to the growth in U.S. natural gas production, and is expected to account for over 55% of the growth by 2035. WV Supreme Court Delivers Major Decision on O&G Severance Tax

    May 4, 2026May 4, 2026

The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Equinor USA Onshore Properties Inc. (formerly Statoil) in a multi-million dollar tax dispute last Friday. The case has major implications for how the state calculates severance taxes for natural gas liquids. The decision reversed an intermediate court’s procedural dismissal, entitling Equinor to over $19 million in tax refunds for the years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. The dispute centered on the definition of “gross proceeds” and the timeliness of administrative appeals in a years-long battle with the West Virginia tax commissioner. Mason County, WV Data Center: 3 Bldgs, 984 NatGas, Diesel Engines

    May 4, 2026May 4, 2026

In January, MDN reported that Fidelis New Energy and 8090 Industries together had launched a new company, American Intelligence & Power Corporation (AIPCorp), to develop the Monarch Compute Campus in Mason County, West Virginia (see Huge New Data Center Coming to Mason County, WV with 2 GW Gas Power). This 2,380-acre microgrid project provides behind-the-meter power for AI and hyperscale data centers, bypassing standard grid delays. In March, AIPCorp announced it had sold itself to Nscale Global Holdings Limited, one of the fastest-growing hyperscalers in the world (see Mason County, WV Data Center Project (Gas Powered) Sold to Nscale). The new owners filed an application (on April 20, just coming to light now) for a construction permit. The application reveals some important new details about the project. U.S. Has More Natural Gas Than It Can Use; Permian Prices Negative

    May 4, 2026May 4, 2026

What in the world is going on with natural gas prices, around the planet and here at home? How is the Iran war affecting natgas prices abroad and here? According to a Bloomberg analysis article, the Iran war has disrupted global energy supplies, driving gas prices up by roughly 40% in Europe and 50% in Asia. Yet the U.S. faces the opposite problem — a massive natural gas surplus. Permian Basin producers in West Texas have generated so much gas as an oil byproduct (called associated gas) that pipeline infrastructure cannot keep pace, pushing regional prices to historic lows of -$9.60/MMBtu. Yes, that’s MINUS $9.60! It’s hard for M-U molecules to compete with producers willing to pay customers to take their natgas. 3.2 Bcf/d Planned Pipe Expansions to Carry M-U Gas to the Midwest

    May 1, 2026May 1, 2026

Data centers are driving significant growth in natural gas demand in the Midwest, leading to several pipeline expansion projects. East Daley Analytics is tracking 24 GW of potential power generation capacity from Midwest data centers, which could create over 5 Bcf/d of new gas demand in a high-case scenario. The region’s appeal stems from ample land, water resources, and low-cost electricity, with Illinois and Wisconsin showing the largest potential growth (if the Democrat machine in those states doesn’t block it). To meet this demand, over 3.2 Bcf/d of pipeline expansions are planned for six different pipelines. While some of the pipelines flow molecules from other regions, they ALL flow at least some Marcellus/Utica molecules. We have the list of pipelines looking to expand below. PA DEP Hard at Work Analyzing 42 “Studies” re Increasing Setbacks

    May 1, 2026May 1, 2026

In December, the Pennsylvania Environmental Quality Board (EQB) accepted a petition by radical green groups, including the Clean Air Council and Environmental Integrity Project, to “study” the issue of increasing setbacks for shale drilling so far that it would ban ALL new Marcellus/Utica drilling in the Keystone State, which is no exaggeration (see EQB Votes to Consider Ban on Marcellus Drilling Via Crazy Setbacks). In March, the Shapiro Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) told the EQB it is actively reviewing the rulemaking petition and will have a recommendation on setbacks for the board by the end of this year (see PA DEP Signals Recommendation on Shale Drilling Setbacks by Year End). Yesterday, the DEP provided an update on its progress. Read More “PA DEP Hard at Work Analyzing 42 “Studies” re Increasing Setbacks”

Bitcoin Miner MARA Buys OH’s Long Ridge Gas Plant, Transload Site

    May 1, 2026May 1, 2026
    Long Ridge Energy & Power

Long Ridge Energy & Power operates a 485 MW (nameplate 505 MW) combined-cycle natural gas power plant in Hannibal, Ohio, designed for eventual 100% hydrogen fuel usage. Located on a 1,600-acre site formerly used by an aluminum smelter, it serves the PJM grid and supports an integrated digital infrastructure/data center campus. Long Ridge has sort of morphed over the years. It originally served as a transloading terminal where frac sand and equipment used for shale drilling were hauled in by barge or rail and transferred to trucks. The transloading aspect of the terminal seems to be deemphasized these days. The new news is that the owner of Long Ridge, FTAI Infrastructure Inc., announced it is selling the facility and gas-fired power plant to MARA Holdings, Inc. for $1.52 billion. Expand Energy ‘Not Waiting Around’ for New CEO, Search Continues

    April 30, 2026April 30, 2026

Expand Energy turned in its first quarter 2026 update yesterday. Across all of its operations in the Marcellus/Utica and the Haynesville, Expand operated an average of 13 rigs during the first quarter, drilling 60 wells and turning 49 wells in line, resulting in net production of approximately 7.44 Bcfe/d (93% natural gas). In 2026, Expand Energy expects to run 11 to 12 rigs and invest approximately $2.85 billion, yielding an estimated daily production of approximately 7.5 Bcfe/d. We have a detailed breakdown below of how much of that activity is in the M-U. The Expand board fired its successful CEO, Nick Dell’Osso, in February (see Earthquake at Expand Energy: CEO Nick Dell’Osso Fired by the Board). Interim CEO Michael Wichterich said the company continues to look for a new chief executive, but in the meantime, it is “not waiting around” for a permanent leader to be chosen. Surprise! 4th Circus Clown Judges Allow MVP Southgate Construction

    April 30, 2026April 30, 2026

Just yesterday, MDN told you that three left-wing judges from the 4th Circuit (“Circus”) who hate the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) were back at it, badmouthing an extension of MVP into North Carolina, called Southgate (see 4th Circus Clown Judges Badmouth MVP Southgate in Oral Arguments). Their comments to attorneys for MVP Southgate during oral arguments exposed their bias. Big Green groups sued to overturn permits issued by North Carolina and Virginia for the project. Southgate is ready to begin construction, but a temporary “stay” was issued on March 30 while this lawsuit plays out. In a surprise decision, the clown judges lifted the stay last night, allowing construction to start. Read More “Surprise! 4th Circus Clown Judges Allow MVP Southgate Construction”
