Utilities Landing Deals to Provide M-U NatGas to Data Centers

    August 29, 2025August 29, 2025

Over the past year, gas utilities have increasingly targeted data centers as customers for on-site power generation, driven by rising demand from hyperscale, leased, and crypto-mining facilities, particularly in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Companies, including Atmos Energy, Chesapeake Utilities, National Fuel Gas, and Enbridge, have signed agreements to supply gas or build pipelines to co-located gas-fired or converted coal-to-gas plants. Utilities view medium-sized data centers as a “sweet spot,” but face hurdles such as limited pipeline capacity, equipment backlogs, and coordination challenges across the gas value chain. Smaller turbines and fuel cells are increasingly used, though supply constraints remain a concern. Read More “Utilities Landing Deals to Provide M-U NatGas to Data Centers”

Exxon Outlook: Natural Gas Demand to Rise Another 20% by 2050

    August 29, 2025August 29, 2025

ExxonMobil issued its annual Energy Outlook yesterday, a report that peers into the crystal ball to predict where the energy sector is headed from now until 2050. The company bets its future on what it thinks will happen. In this latest report, Exxon projects that global natural gas demand will rise by over 20% by 2050, as it replaces coal in industry and meets growing electricity needs in developing countries. Based on that view, the company plans to grow its production by 18% over the next five years. Exxon predicts that global oil demand will plateau after 2030, although it is expected to remain above 100 million barrels per day. The crystal ball suggests that gasoline demand will drop 25% due to the rise of electric vehicles (we beg to differ). However, demand for distillates for transportation is expected to remain strong. EQT Announces Deal to *Buy* LNG from Sempra’s Port Arthur LNG

    August 28, 2025August 28, 2025

This is a “man bites dog” kind of story. EQT Corporation, now the second-largest natural gas producer in the U.S. (not far behind Expand Energy), has been pushing LNG (liquefied natural gas) for years. Since 2022, we’ve called EQT CEO Toby Rice the “apostle of LNG,” spreading the LNG gospel far and wide in an effort to expand U.S. LNG exports (see EQT CEO Toby Rice Unveils Nationwide Plan to “Unleash” U.S. LNG). Rice is kicking up his company’s commitment to the LNG space a notch by committing to *buy* (not sell) LNG from Sempra’s Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project in Jefferson County, Texas. Infinity Nat. Res. on the Hunt for More Utica OR Marcellus Assets

    August 28, 2025August 28, 2025

MDN previously brought you the news that Infinity Natural Resources (INR) CEO Zack Arnold was interested in “lower level” deals to buy Utica Shale assets situated near INR’s existing leasehold positions (see Infinity Natural Resources on the Hunt for More Ohio Utica Assets). Arnold told the audience at the 2025 SUPER DUG Conference and Expo in June that his company was currently hunting for deals. We have an update. It appears Arnold has modified his intentions since June. At yesterday’s DUG Appalachia Conference in Pittsburgh, Arnold said he’s now interested in buying both Utica AND Marcellus assets. He’s also interested not only in smaller deals in the millions of dollars, but larger deals “that could pierce $1 billion.” Read More “Infinity Nat. August 28, 2025August 28, 2025

Also chatting with Hart Energy interviewers at yesterday’s DUG Appalachia Conference in Pittsburgh was Kyle Mork, the CEO of Greylock Energy. Greylock, a privately held company, is headquartered in Charleston, West Virginia, with offices in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Utah. Greylock operates throughout Appalachia and the Rockies. Mork revealed at yesterday’s event that Greylock recently sold some (all?) of its Wyoming assets for an undisclosed amount. Now, the company is in acquisition mode. Mork said he’s interested in “anything in Appalachia” for targeted acquisitions. We like the sound of that! Read More “Greylock Sells Wyoming Assets; Now on the Hunt for Utica Assets”

Essential Utilities Investing $26M in Greene County Data Center

    August 28, 2025August 28, 2025

Data center projects are sprouting like dandelions in Pennsylvania. Along with these data centers come work and business opportunities for the oil and gas industry and related industries, such as utilities. Here’s an example. Essential Utilities yesterday announced its subsidiaries will invest $26 million in a major data center project in Greene County, PA. Essential is one of the largest publicly traded water, wastewater, and natural gas providers in the U.S., serving approximately 5 million people across 9 states under the Aqua and Peoples brands. Both brands are involved in this announcement. Read More “Essential Utilities Investing $26M in Greene County Data Center”

Freeport Twp (PA) Declares Disaster Emergency re EQT Frac-Out

    August 28, 2025August 28, 2025

Just coming to light for us: Freeport Township, located in Greene County, PA, declared a Disaster Emergency on June 23, 2025. The emergency is related to a “frac-out” at an EQT well that happened three years ago, in July 2022 (see Possible Frac-Out Reported at EQT Well Site in Greene County, PA). A frac-out, or “inadvertent return,” happens when drilling mud pops out of places where it’s not supposed to — places outside the borehole being drilled. The problem with this frac-out is that it is alleged to have affected many local water wells in the area (100 people). Read More “Freeport Twp (PA) Declares Disaster Emergency re EQT Frac-Out”

PA DEP Keeps a Close Eye on Leaky Eureka Wastewater Facility

    August 28, 2025August 28, 2025

In mid-August, a spill at Eureka Resources’ Williamsport facility released about 16,000 gallons of oil-based wastewater, with some entering Grafius Run and the West Branch of the Susquehanna River (see ‘Black Goop’ Spills into Susquehanna River from Closed Eureka Plant). The leak, traced to a corroded tank fitting, was discovered by fishermen. In its ongoing investigation, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) detected no radiation at the facility but did find significant permit violations, including improper long-term waste storage, faulty tank alarms, and unauthorized discharges. DEP issued orders requiring immediate containment, waste removal, tank repairs, and proof of proper disposal (see PA DEP Orders Eureka Resources to Remove Waste at Williamsport Plant). Cleanup continues with multiple agencies involved. Read More “PA DEP Keeps a Close Eye on Leaky Eureka Wastewater Facility”

Fresh Legal Look at Ohio Royalty Post-Production Deductions

    August 27, 2025August 27, 2025

Back in April, MDN brought you news about an important decision issued in a federal court case (in Ohio) that potentially affects landowners and drillers with shale leases throughout the Marcellus/Utica (see 6th Circuit Upholds OH Landowner Claims Against Antero re Deductions). The case, The Grissoms, LLC v. Antero Resources Corporation, was decided by the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit (6th Circuit) on April 2, 2025. The case involves a dispute between a certified class of 370 Ohio landowners and Antero. According to a law firm writing about the decision, “This case is more than just a win for those plaintiffs. It sets the stage for future mineral owners in their efforts to fight royalty deductions by clarifying a commonly used oil and gas lease provision.” Read More “Fresh Legal Look at Ohio Royalty Post-Production Deductions”

    S. Korea Building 2 Jones Act LNG Carriers at Philly Shipyard

    August 27, 2025August 27, 2025
A Hanwha-built LNG carrier at sea, equipped with advanced propulsion technology

Donald Trump, the dealmaker, has been hard at work attempting to restore balance to our trade with other countries. One of the countries with a significant imbalance in trade with the U.S. is South Korea. To avoid Trump’s threatened tariffs (and wrath), South Korea’s business lobby group announced yesterday that South Korean companies would invest $150 billion (a staggering number) in areas such as artificial intelligence, chips, biotechnology, shipbuilding, and nuclear power. While no specific breakdown or timeframe for the investments was announced, we are aware of one of the investments. Hanwha Group announced a $5 billion infrastructure plan for the Hanwha Philly Shipyard, where the company will complete (we hesitate to say “build”) two new LNG export ships that are U.S. Jones Act compliant. PA Produces More Carbon-Free Power Than Any RGGI State

    August 27, 2025August 27, 2025

It’s hard to believe we’re still talking about (and waiting for) the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to weigh in on whether or not it was legal for former Governor Tom Wolf to unilaterally sentence all Pennsylvanians to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) carbon tax scheme—with no vote by the legislature. The Supremes collected briefs on RGGI a whole year ago (see PA Supreme Court Lib Dems Collecting Briefs on RGGI Carbon Tax). And still no decision. When the state constitution is followed, it gives ONLY the legislature the right to impose new taxes on the citizenry. Wolf ignored that law and decided to do it himself. Calling RGGI a “fee” instead of a “tax” doesn’t change the fact that it’s a tax. Read More “PA Produces More Carbon-Free Power Than Any RGGI State”

FERC Grants Texas LNG Brownsville Extra 5 Years to Come Online

    August 27, 2025August 27, 2025

Glenfarne’s Texas LNG facility in Brownsville, Texas, will have the capacity to export 4 MTPA. EQT Corporation, the largest natural gas producer in the Marcellus/Utica, signed two agreements with Glenfarne to liquefy 2.0 million tons per annum (MTPA) of EQT-extracted shale gas at the facility when it’s built (see EQT Signs Contract to Ship 264 MMcf/d to LNG Export Plant in Texas). That works out to be roughly 264 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of EQT’s M-U molecules hitching a ride to South Texas. The Texas LNG facility cleared a legal hurdle a month ago when the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved a court-ordered revised environmental impact statement (see Texas LNG Brownsville Receives Positive Final FERC Enviro Review). FERC is back with two more green lights for the Texas LNG project… Read More “FERC Grants Texas LNG Brownsville Extra 5 Years to Come Online”
