FERC Chairman Christie All In on Issuing Speedier Pipe Permits

    March 21, 2025March 21, 2025
    FERC Chairman Mark Christie

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) held its monthly meeting yesterday. Following the meeting, the newly minted Chairman, Mark Christie, held a press conference and answered many questions from reporters. Among them was about President Trump’s energy dominance agenda and building out infrastructure faster. As for speeding up the permitting process, Christie said, “That’s something we’d say publicly from the rooftops. We do want to do permitting efficiently and quickly.” He added with respect to faster permitting, “We’ve been focusing on that from the first day I was chair.” Read More “FERC Chairman Christie All In on Issuing Speedier Pipe Permits”

U.S. LNG Exporters Continue Strict Methane Regs Despite Rollbacks

    March 21, 2025March 21, 2025

U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporters plan to continue to monitor and curb their methane emissions despite President Trump’s plans to roll back EPA climate regulations (see EPA Launches Biggest Deregulatory Action in U.S. History, Favors O&G). Why? They seek to meet the standards of overseas import markets. Among recent actions by the EPA is the rollback of a requirement for companies to report their annual emissions of the so-called greenhouse gas methane and a decision to review the so-called “endangerment finding,” the legal foundation for all U.S. climate regulation that identifies “greenhouse gases” as pollutants. Build Data Centers Faster by Combining Small Nukes with Natural Gas

    March 21, 2025March 21, 2025

Data centers and AI are in the news almost daily. The great issue of our time (which has developed over the past year or so) is that AI and data centers are huge customers for electricity. Every region of the country (particularly the Eastern Seaboard) struggles with how to meet the demand for more electricity. The existing grid can’t handle the coming increase in demand. Data centers would love to just “plug in” to the local grid, but given the speed with which they want to build these new facilities, that’s unrealistic. Building a new nuclear plant to power such facilities takes over a decade and billions of dollars. Building a new gas-fired power plant takes at least 2-3 years from start to finish (once permitting is issued). Is it possible to develop a new power source for data centers in two years? Indeed, there is… Read More “Build Data Centers Faster by Combining Small Nukes with Natural Gas”

Big Green Tells NY Gov. Hochul Better Not Cave re Constitution Pipe

    March 20, 2025March 20, 2025

Big Green is alarmed that New York Governor Kathy Hochul trooped to The White House last Friday to have a private, off-the-record conversation with President Trump about a laundry list of things, but two primary items: the Constitution Pipeline and a tax on driving in parts of Manhattan during certain hours (called “congestion pricing”). Nobody is saying anything about the meeting, but the implication is that perhaps Hochul and Trump were engaged in “horse swapping”—Trump bends on congestion pricing if Hochul bends on allowing (even endorsing) the Constitution Pipeline. The prospect of Hochul caving on the Constitution has set the environmental left’s hair on fire. Read More “Big Green Tells NY Gov. Hochul Better Not Cave re Constitution Pipe”

OH Senate Bill 2 Passes Unanimously to Spur More NatGas-Fired Power

    March 20, 2025March 20, 2025

Earlier this week, MDN told you that the Ohio Chamber of Commerce was putting its considerable influence behind a pair of bills making their way through the state legislature: Senate Bill (SB) 2 and House Bill (HB) 15 (see Ohio Chamber Makes Case to Tap “Trapped” Utica Wells for Powergen). The Chamber is celebrating today. Yesterday, the Ohio Senate passed SB 2 unanimously, 31-0, with both Republicans and Democrats supporting a bill that encourages rapid construction of new power plants (namely gas-fired power plants) by streamlining regulations and distinguishing between power generation and distribution to foster competition. PA DEP Hosting Apr 1 Webinar on Complying with EPA Quad O b/c Rule

    March 20, 2025March 20, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold an online webinar to provide an overview to the public on the DEP’s approach to implementing the federal Clean Air Act 40 CFR Part 60, Subparts OOOOb and OOOOc, also known as Quad O b/c, called “Reducing Emissions of Methane and Other Pollution from Oil and Natural Gas Operations.” What exactly *is* the DEP’s approach for compliance with Quad O b/c? That’s a much longer answer. Read More “PA DEP Hosting Apr 1 Webinar on Complying with EPA Quad O b/c Rule”

Penn State: Store, Use Compressed Air in Old O&G Wells for Powergen

    March 20, 2025March 20, 2025

You have to hand it to the environment-left; they sure are creative. How do they think these things up? Penn State researchers, committed to the religion of eliminating fossil fuels and the 100% adoption of unreliable renewables, are looking for a way to use old/depleted oil and gas wells—of which there are hundreds of thousands in PA (an estimated 3.9 million nationwide). The latest Penn State research proposes blowing compressed air down old wells and storing it underground where the earth’s heat will warm it, further compressing it (giving it an extra 9.5% of “efficiency”). And when electricity is needed, let the air escape, running big power turbines. Just one teeny, tiny problem: It costs so much that nobody will do it. DOE Grants CP2 LNG (La.) Approval to Export to Non-FTA Countries

    March 20, 2025March 20, 2025

Yesterday, Venture Global received approval from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to non-FTA countries for its third project, CP2 LNG, in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Venture Global is working through a final investment decision (FID) to proceed with the project. The DOE approval is a key milestone for the project, a project that, in all likelihood, will use at least some Marcellus/Utica molecules. However, there are miles to go before it gets built, comes online, and then begins to honor its customer contracts. YEARS. Read More “DOE Grants CP2 LNG (La.) Trump DOE to Carefully Deal with Biden DOE’s Sham LNG Report

    March 20, 2025March 20, 2025

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued its approval for Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass (CP) 2 LNG export project (see our story today, DOE Grants CP2 LNG (La.) Approval to Export to Non-FTA Countries). The DOE is ramping up and will likely approve many more projects. However, there is a problem: a hidden “landmine” left behind by the Biden DOE on its way out the door, meant to be used by Big Green in opposing Trump’s DOE actions. The landmine is a sham “study” on LNG and climate change issued by the Bidenistas (see Biden/Granholm DOE Releases Garbage Anti-LNG Exports “Study”). Jury Makes Greenpeace Pay $660 Million to Energy Transfer re DAP

    March 20, 2025March 20, 2025

This is a sweet victory for our side. Last summer, MDN told you about a lawsuit being heard to hold Big Green groups (namely Greenpeace) responsible for their actions. Energy Transfer (ET), the owner and operator of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAP), sued Greenpeace and other alleged instigators for $300 million for the damages sustained by the company due to violent protests incited by the groups in North Dakota in 2016 (see ET $300M Lawsuit v. Big Green Pipe Violence Gets Court Hearing). Yesterday, the jury decided the case in favor of ET and handed the company $660 million from Greenpeace! Crowley Launches 1st U.S. Jones Act LNG Carrier to Serve Puerto Rico

    March 19, 2025June 20, 2025
Crowley’s American Energy, the first U.S. LNG carrier to transport U.S.-sourced natural gas to Puerto Rico.

This is a big deal. Shipping giant Crowley, with over 170 vessels mostly in the Jones Act fleet and approximately 7,000 employees around the world (employs more U.S. mariners than any other company), announced it has launched a Jones Act-compliant LNG carrier, U.S.-built and crewed, that will carry LNG from Gulf Coast export facilities to Puerto Rico (P.R.). Since P.R. is a U.S. territory, any U.S. LNG arriving on its shore must be transported on an American crewed and built ship to comply with the century-old Jones Act. Otherwise, the LNG must come from another country. Yeah, screwed up, royally. But, now, there is one ship that can carry LNG from the U.S. to P.R. Finally! WV Gov. Backs Energy Bill to Attract Data Centers, Use Coal & Gas

    March 19, 2025March 19, 2025
WV Gov. Pat Morrisey at the lectern

Yesterday, West Virginia Governor Pat Morrisey stood with the natural resource industry and educational leaders to ask the West Virginia Legislature to pass the Power Generation and Consumption Act (House Bill 2014) to expand data center development in the state. The bill will allow companies to develop independent energy grids using natural resources, including coal and gas, and positions West Virginia as a prime location for data centers, AI processing, and cloud computing. Morrisey said the legislation would “attract significant investment to the state.” Read More “WV Gov. Backs Energy Bill to Attract Data Centers, Use Coal & Gas”

    Mobile gas-fired turbine rig

Forbes reports that when Memphis, Tennessee’s grid couldn’t provide all the electricity needed to power Elon Musk’s xAI’s new Colossus data center, the company turned to “a quick and dirty solution” of using mobile natural gas turbines. The Forbes reporter says these power plants on wheels are “usually a last resort during emergencies” and not a permanent solution. Data centers nationwide have started using them as a stopgap solution. At least four mobile units are at the xAI site in Memphis, possibly more. The concern is that they not only generate lots of electricity but also pollutants like nitrous oxides (NOx) and formaldehyde.
