Left Caves, Says OK to Pair Wind & Solar with “Dirty” Peaker Plants

    March 19, 2025March 19, 2025

The environmental left (at least some of them) is finally admitting what everyone with a brain already knows: Solar and wind power cannot meet the rapidly increasing demands for electricity coming from existing and soon-to-be-built AI data centers. What’s a lefty to do? We’ve been telling you (for years) that natural gas-fired power, which is “dispatchable” and on-demand, is a good backup for solar and wind. The left is finally holding its nose and saying maybe “dirty” natgas “peaker” (on demand) gas plants aren’t so bad after all. WV Senate Bill 592 Eases Oil & Gas Storage Tank Inspections

    March 18, 2025March 18, 2025

In the closing hours of the 2014 West Virginia legislative session, the legislature passed Senate Bill (SB) 373, the Aboveground Storage Tank Act (see Fate of 3 WV Laws that Impact Marcellus/Utica Drilling). The bill, which was signed into law, was in response to a chemical leak that affected the drinking water for 300,000 WV residents. Even though the leak was not related to oil and gas drilling (it was related to coal mining), the new rules governing aboveground storage tanks for chemicals affect several industries, including the Marcellus/Utica (see Impact of WV’s New Chemical Tank Law on Marcellus Drillers). Over the years, several attempts have been made to relax the over-restrictive new rules for the oil and gas industry. Another attempt is underway in this year’s legislative session: Senate Bill (SB) 592. Read More “WV Senate Bill 592 Eases Oil & Gas Storage Tank Inspections”

AlphaGen Proposes 450 MW of Expaned Gas-Fired Power in NJ, OH, MD

    March 18, 2025March 18, 2025

Yesterday, MDN told you that power generation giant LS Power announced a plan to add more than 700 megawatts (MW) of new electric generating capacity across the PJM grid by modifying and expanding gas-fired plants already in existence in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia (see LS Power Plans to Upgrade 2 Peaker Gas Plants in PA, OH to Baseload). Today, we have news of another power provider, Alpha Generation LLC (AlphaGen), with plans to add 450 MW of extra power in PJM at gas-fired plants in New Jersey, Maryland, and Ohio. What the heck is going on? Read More “AlphaGen Proposes 450 MW of Expaned Gas-Fired Power in NJ, OH, MD”

Ohio Chamber Makes Case to Tap “Trapped” Utica Wells for Powergen

    March 18, 2025March 18, 2025

A guest column appearing in the Columbus Dispatch written by the president and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce makes a strong case that (a) Ohio needs more electric power generation, and (b) the perfect solution is to use “trapped” by lack of pipelines Utica Shale gas. Steve Stivers throws the weight of the Chamber behind a pair of bills that aim to make it easier to generate power in the Buckeye State, Senate Bill (SB) 2 and House Bill (HB) 15. AWMS Continues the Fight to Reopen Shuttered OH Injection Well

    March 18, 2025March 18, 2025

We’ve been tracking a story that we consider an ongoing tragedy for nearly a decade. American Water Management Services (AWMS) owns a wastewater injection well in Trumbull County, Ohio, that supposedly caused a low-level earthquake (that nobody could feel) in 2014. Actually, there are two injection wells located at the site, both operated by AWMS. They were both “temporarily” shut down by the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources following the quake nobody could feel (see ODNR Temporarily Shuts Down Injection Wells After Low-Level Quake). ODNR allowed AWMS to reopen one of the injection wells but denied it the right to reopen the second well. AWMS has been locked in a legal battle to reopen the shuttered well and get compensated by the state for forcing it out of business (missed revenues). The battle continues to this day. President Trump Signs Congress Resolution Overturning Methane Tax

    March 18, 2025March 18, 2025
U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) with President Donald Trump at the White House signing ceremony.

After the shocking news in 2022 that then-U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (from West Virginia) had sold out his state and the entire country by agreeing to support the misnamed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) bill (better named the Green New Scam), the details began to come out about just how bad the bill (now law) really is for the oil and gas industry. First and foremost, it slapped a new methane tax on oil and gas activities (see Joe Manchin’s Green New Deal Cave Slaps O&G with Big Methane Tax). Endless lawsuits and regulatory challenges ensued. However, on their way out the door late last year, the Bidenistas pulled the trigger and implemented the tax (see Parting Shot: Biden-Harris EPA Slaps $1,500/Ton Tax on Methane). The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate voted to overturn Biden’s methane tax in late February (see House & Senate Vote to Overturn Biden IRA Methane Tax, Trump to Sign). On Friday, at a special ceremony at the White House, President Trump signed the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution overturning the methane tax. VICTORY! AI Takes “Center Stage” at CERAWeek, Leads to Faster, Cheaper O&G

    March 18, 2025March 18, 2025

Artificial Intelligence (AI) “took center stage in many sessions” at last week’s CERAWeek by S&P conference in Houston. But maybe not for the reasons you may think. Lately, MDN has brought you a flurry of stories about AI data centers and the monsters they are with respect to the amount of energy they consume. A day doesn’t go by that we don’t see stories of plans and announcements to generate more electricity (typically using gas-fired plants) to feed these beasts. While AI data centers and the need to supply them with gas-fired power were discussed last week at CERAWeek, the AI we’re talking about is how energy companies in all sectors (upstream, midstream, and downstream) are using AI to do their jobs faster, cheaper, and better. Climate “Activists” Turn to Criminal Sabotage Instead of Protest

    March 18, 2025March 18, 2025

This is a story from the other side of “the pond”—from the United Kingdom. But it has relevance to our own country. The ultra-liberal UK Guardian newspaper ran a story ten days ago that attempts to excuse the criminal (we’d call them terroristic) actions of so-called “protesters” who have now resorted to using sabotage in their attempt to bully and force businesses to drop support for fossil energy. The “protesters” have tipped over into full-blown criminal activity. And we’re not talking about throwing soup at paintings in museums (which is a crime, too). We’re talking about cutting internet/communications to hundreds of businesses in the middle of London and doing it in the dead of night, hiding their identities from the ever-present cameras. National Fuel Gas Company (NFG), headquartered in Buffalo, NY, is the parent company for Marcellus/Utica driller Seneca Resources and the parent of midstream company NFG Midstream (and subsidiary Empire Pipeline). In November 2023, MDN first reported on NFG Midstream’s Tioga Pathway project, an estimated $90 million modernization and expansion project that will add 190,000 Dth per day (190 MMcf/d) of firm transportation takeaway capacity from northwest Tioga County, Pennsylvania (see NFG & Seneca Announce New Tioga Pathway Pipeline Project). The company filed with FERC last August to build the Tioga Pathway by 2026 (see NFG Qtly Update: Filing Tioga Pathway Pipe with FERC This Month). The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is getting ready to issue permits for the project, including a national Clean Water Act Section 401 Certification, indicating the project is advancing to the construction phase. Nat’l Rig Count Even @ 592; Marcellus Even @ 24, Utica Even @ 11

    March 17, 2025March 17, 2025

The Baker Hughes U.S. national rig count did not gain or lose last week—staying even with 592 active rigs. As for the Marcellus/Utica, the rig count was a combined 35 last week. Rigs focused on the Marcellus were a combined 24 across the three M-U states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. Rigs focused on the Utica were a combined 11. PA has operated 15 rigs (or more) for the past 18 weeks. OH has operated nine rigs for the past 15 weeks. WV had operated 10 rigs for an astonishing 23 weeks in a row. One month ago, WV added (and has kept) one additional rig and now operates 11 active rigs. Read More “Nat’l Rig Count Even @ 592; Marcellus Even @ 24, Utica Even @ 11”

LS Power Plans to Upgrade 2 Peaker Gas Plants in PA, OH to Baseload

    March 17, 2025March 17, 2025

We feel like it’s “peaker” day here at MDN. We have three stories that revolve around peaker gas-fired power plants. What is a peaker? It’s a gas-fired power plant that pops on and gets used only during the heaviest electric usage times, like really hot days in the summer and really cold days during the winter. “Baseload,” on the other hand, are gas plants that run constantly. LS Power, a huge power generation company that owns and operates some 50,000 megawatts (MW) of power generation, including utility-scale solar, wind, hydro, battery energy storage, and natural gas-fired facilities, announced on Friday a plan to add more than 700 MW of new electric generating capacity across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. The plan includes promoting (upgrading) two peakers, one in PA and one in OH, to become full-time baseload plants. More yummy Marcellus and Utica gas will be required to feed these plants. Chesterfield Gas-Fired Peakers to Save Customers $1B Over 30 Yrs

    March 17, 2025March 17, 2025
    Chesterfield County, VA

An article appearing in the Virginia Center Square online publication does a masterful job of what we call “burying the lead” in the newspaper business. The headline of the article is “Dominion’s Chesterfield gas plant could cost ratepayers $4.5B.” Dominion Energy plans to build small “peaker” electric generating plants in Chesterfield County, VA, near Richmond (see Dominion Plans to Build 1,000-MW Gas Peaker Plant Near Richmond, VA). The Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center (CERC) calls for building four 250-megawatt gas-fired power plants (1,000 MW total) that can jump into action during the coldest and hottest days of the year to help supply enough electricity for 250,000 homes—to keep the lights on because solar and wind are not up to the task. Tiny Newark Gas Peaker Approved by EPA, Set to Begin Construction

    March 17, 2025March 17, 2025

The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission operates the largest sewage treatment plant in New Jersey — in Newark. When Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, the sewer plant lost power and dumped BILLIONS of gallons of raw sewage into the Passaic River. The Commission plans to prevent that from happening again by building a tiny natural gas peaker plant to generate electricity. It would only be used to avoid such environmental damage again (i.e., rarely used, only for emergencies). Great news: The plant has been approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and now has (or soon will have) all the permits it needs to begin construction.
