    Nat’l Rig Count Down 1 @ 592; Marcellus Even @ 24, Utica Even @ 11

    March 10, 2025March 10, 2025

After five weeks of adding rigs, the Baker Hughes U.S. rig count decreased by a single rig last week. The national rig count now stands at 592. As for the Marcellus/Utica, the rig count was a combined 35 last week, retaining a rig added in West Virginia three weeks ago. Rigs focused on the Marcellus were a combined 24 across the three M-U states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. Rigs focused on the Utica were a combined 11. PA has operated 15 rigs (or more) for the past 17 weeks. OH has operated nine rigs for the past 14 weeks. WV had operated 10 rigs for an astonishing 23 weeks in a row. Three weeks ago, WV added (and has kept) one additional rig and now operates 11 active rigs. Good things are happening in the Mountain State. Ascent Resources Actively Considering IPO or Sale

    March 10, 2025March 10, 2025

Ascent Resources, founded as American Energy Partners by gas legend Aubrey McClendon, is a privately held company focusing 100% on the Ohio Utica Shale. Ascent, headquartered in Oklahoma City, OK, is Ohio’s largest natural gas producer and the 8th largest natural gas producer in the U.S. The company issued its fourth quarter and full-year 2024 update last week. The big news came from comments during a conference call with analysts. CFO Brooks Shughart said company management and the board are internally discussing and monitoring the markets with an eye on a potential IPO (initial public offering), or possibly the M&A markets for a potential sale. Trump Admin Considers Strategies to Overturn DRBC Fracking Ban

    March 10, 2025March 18, 2025

On Sunday, March 2, MDN friend Tom Shepstone (who writes the must-read Energy Security and Freedom website) participated in a meeting with new EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, Congressman Rob Bresnahan, several state elected officials, as well as labor and others regarding energy and other critical issues in Northeast Pennsylvania. While the meeting discussed what is needed from the Trump administration to get critical pipelines built, a primary focus was to discuss how to overturn the Delaware River Basin Commission’s (DRBC) ban on fracking. This is tremendously good news for those living in Wayne and Pike counties in northeastern Pennsylvania where there are abundant supplies of Marcellus shale gas. Landowners have been denied the right to extract minerals under their privately-owned land for the last 15 years. It’s an ongoing tragedy. EQT Sues Union Township (Washington County, PA) for Extortion

    March 10, 2025March 10, 2025

Here’s an explosive allegation. EQT Corporation and its pipeline subsidiary EQM Gathering are suing Union Township (located in Washington County, PA). Also named in the lawsuit are the town’s five supervisors. EQT’s allegation is that the town (and its supervisors) are attempting to extort big money from EQT to allow the company to connect gathering pipelines to several of its recently-drilled shale wells. Among the claims, the town wants $50,000 to issue a permit for ANY gathering pipeline that connects to a well. The town also (says EQT in the lawsuit) tried to extort $750,000 to repair a road slip caused by another company. Oh! And Union wants a $50,000 monthly “fee” from EQT to continue operating in the township. Read More “EQT Sues Union Township (Washington County, PA) for Extortion”

Diversified JV Targets NatGas for Data Center Power in WV, VA, KY

    March 10, 2025March 10, 2025

This morning, Diversified Energy, FuelCell Energy, and TESIAC announced a strategic partnership “intended to address the urgent energy needs of data centers” by supplying as much as 360 megawatts (MW) of electricity to three distinct locations in Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. The partnership has agreed to create an Acquisition and Development Company (ADC), essentially a joint venture, focused on delivering reliable, cost-efficient, so-called net-zero power from natural gas and captured coal mine methane (CMM) to meet the soaring demand of data centers for reliable power. The way they will provide the power is quite interesting. Read More “Diversified JV Targets NatGas for Data Center Power in WV, VA, KY”

Gov. Shapiro’s Energy Policies Will Cost Pennsylvanians Big Money

    March 10, 2025March 10, 2025

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is a typical liberal Democrat politician. He pretends to be moderate and a supporter of the Marcellus industry in the Keystone State. He is neither. Shapiro claims his proposed energy programs will cut costs for Pennsylvanians. The reverse is true. But we’re not just making blanket unprovable assertions or opinions about Shapiro’s energy plans. We have the receipts to prove that what he wants for the state vis-à-vis energy is a disaster for residents. Read More “Gov. Shapiro’s Energy Policies Will Cost Pennsylvanians Big Money”

Greedy Climate Grifters Squeal, Sue to Restore $20B EPA Slush Fund

    March 10, 2025March 10, 2025

Two months ago, a video circulated on social media featuring a Biden EPA political appointee talking about “tossing gold bars off the Titanic,” intentionally rushing to get billions of tax dollars recklessly out of the agency before Inauguration Day. The EPA’s new sheriff, Lee Zeldin, located $20 billion of those gold bars sitting at a Citibank bank account (see EPA Discovers Illegal $20 Billion Transfer from Biden’s Final Days). The money was meant to fund radical anti-Trump efforts related to the environment. Zeldin froze the account and is demanding the money be returned. At least one of the Democrat organizations who were promised the booty is now suing, demanding it receive the corrupt payments it was promised. Talk about chutzpah. 16 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Feb 24 – Mar 2

    March 7, 2025March 7, 2025

For the week of Feb 24 – Mar 2, the number of permits issued in the Marcellus/Utica to drill new shale wells increased by a couple. Four weeks ago, 24 new permits were issued. Three weeks ago, the number increased to 36 new permits. Two weeks ago, the number deflated, going down to 14. Last week, we added two permits for a total of 16 new permits issued. The Keystone State (PA) issued just one new permit, which went to Snyder Brothers for a well in Armstrong County. Read More “16 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Feb 24 – Mar 2”

Expand Energy’s “Just in Time” Program Equals “Profits on Demand”

    March 7, 2025March 7, 2025

One year ago in March 2024, MDN told you about a new strategy by Chesapeake Energy (now Expand Energy) to drill new shale gas wells but leave them offline (see Chesapeake Brings Japanese “Just in Time” Concept to Gas Wells). As explained in that article, the company does more than drill DUCs (drilled but uncompleted wells). They complete the wells but do not “turn them inline” (or TILs), meaning they aren’t yet connected to the pipeline network. In writing about the strategy, Bloomberg called it “suspended animation wells,” noting the company planned to use that strategy for 80 wells in 2024 (see Chesapeake Plans to Place 80 Wells into “Suspended Animation”). Last week we told you that it is the end of an era with the retirement of Dan Dinges from the Coterra Board of Directors (see Dan Dinges, Former Cabot O&G CEO, Retiring from Coterra Board). Dinges served as Chairman, President, and CEO of Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation from May 2002 until the company’s merger with Cimarex Energy in October 2021, forming Coterra. The company announced yesterday two more retirements, one who was a long-time member of the Cabot (now Coterra) management team. Antis Rally at OH Statehouse to Protest Fossil Fuels They Were Wearing

    March 7, 2025March 7, 2025

Sorry to be so blunt: You can’t fix stupid. You can only call attention to it, which is what we’re doing with a group of “40 to 50” protesters who gathered yesterday at the Ohio Statehouse to protest drilling for oil and gas under state-owned land, including drilling under (not on) state parks. It was cold and blustery, so they get props for coming out in the foul weather. However, all of the clothes they wore, including the coats, hats, mittens, gloves, boots, not to mention their signage, the glasses some of them wore, the cell phones in their pockets, the bullhorn and podium the used—were all made from the very oil and gas they were protesting. Not to mention none of them arrived there by horse and buggy or by walking. They all drove vehicles made from and powered by fossil fuels. Do they realize how ridiculous they looked? No, we suppose not. Read More “Antis Rally at OH Statehouse to Protest Fossil Fuels They Were Wearing”

S&P Study: U.S. LNG Would “Significantly Lower” World GHG Emissions

    March 7, 2025March 7, 2025

The nonpartisan S&P Global released Phase 1 of a study on LNG exports last December on the very same day the Biden/Granholm Department of Energy released its LNG export “study” (see S&P Study: More U.S. LNG Exports WON’T Raise Domestic Gas Prices). The S&P study, which came out a few hours earlier than the DOE study, said more U.S. LNG exports will NOT raise the domestic price of natural gas, at least not appreciably. The Biden-corrupted DOE report said the opposite, that more LNG exports will cause domestic natural gas prices to go through the roof (and consequently, we shouldn’t build more LNG export facilities). Thank God nobody listened to that claptrap. S&P is back with Phase 2 of their comprehensive LNG study. Phase 2 (full copy below) says U.S. LNG capacity additions would *significantly* lower GHG emissions compared to alternatives. Exactly How President Trump is Unleashing American Energy

    March 7, 2025March 7, 2025

Sometimes you have to toot your own horn, especially when the legacy media (which nobody watches, reads, or listens to anymore) won’t do it. On Tuesday, President Trump gave a joint address to Congress. We won’t rehash the endless coverage of that event and the juvenile (quite despicable) performance by Democrats in attendance. One of Trump’s main themes for the talk was energy. Just ahead of his speech, The White House issued a statement to identify the many ways in which his administration is “unleashing American energy.” That was the toot-your-own-horn bit. It’s a great list and his work thus far is not getting the attention it deserves. Trump has done so much in such a short time, it’s hard to keep up with it all. Let’s go through it chapter and verse… Read More “Exactly How President Trump is Unleashing American Energy”

WV Legislature Advances Bill to Fine Drillers for Royalty Nonpayment

    March 6, 2025March 6, 2025

There are deadbeats in every industry, including (unfortunately) the oil and gas industry. Some O&G producers in West Virginia are gaming the system by not paying landowners/rights owners the royalties they are due. Typically, this does not apply to shale drillers, mostly larger companies. However, with (some, very few) smaller conventional drillers, they just don’t pay royalties owed. And if the check is for under a hundred bucks, what can a landowner do? Hiring a lawyer to litigate would cost more than the money received. A new bill making its way through the WV Senate would fix the situation.
