More U.S. LNG Export Capacity on the Way by End of 2021

    September 27, 2021September 27, 2021

LNG, or liquefied natural gas, is increasingly a vital market for natural gas drillers, both in the Marcellus/Utica and in other plays across the country. In the M-U we have two LNG export facilities–Cove Point, Maryland (currently down for maintenance) and Elba Island, Georgia. Most of the other LNG facilities are located along the Gulf Coast, with the largest LNG export facility operated by Cheniere Energy in Sabine Pass, Louisiana. Cheniere received permission on Friday to begin flowing feedgas to Train 6 at Sabine Pass. Train 6 will likely be online by the end of this year.

Final Nail in the Ohio Nuke Scandal – Repeal Coal Plant Subsidies

    September 27, 2021September 27, 2021

Ohio’s House Bill (HB) 6 law granted billions (plural) of dollars to FirstEnergy in an attempt to prop up the company’s economically failing nuclear power plants. FirstEnergy bribed state legislators to pass, and keep passed, HB 6 by paying out $61 million to a small group of insiders, including the now-former Speaker of the House (see FirstEnergy Involved in Bribery Scheme to Pass $1B Nuke Bailout Law). It is the biggest bribery scandal in Ohio history. HB 6 also provides hundreds of millions of dollars to keep two unprofitable Cold War-era coal plants up and running.

Big News: OH Utica Driller Gulfport Energy Looking to Sell Itself

    September 24, 2021September 24, 2021

Gulfport Energy, the third-largest driller in the Ohio Utica Shale (by the number of wells drilled), emerged from bankruptcy in May with a new board and new top management (see Gulfport Energy Emerges from Bankruptcy w/New Board, CEO/CFO Gone). According to Reuters, Gulfport is shopping itself, looking for a buyer. We’ve never known Reuters to be wrong about these kinds of insider scoops.

WV Landowners Left Out of EQT Class Action Can’t Sue Now

    September 24, 2021September 24, 2021

In early 2019, EQT, the largest natural gas producer in the U.S. (and in the Marcellus/Utica) settled a class action lawsuit in West Virginia with landowners and rights owners ending EQT’s practice of post-production deductions from royalty checks (see EQT Settles WV Class Action Royalty Lawsuit for $53.5M). EQT agreed to pay $53.5 million into a settlement fund that will disburse payments to each individual litigant–unless they elected to opt out of the settlement and continue on with a private lawsuit against EQT. Several landowners say they were not given the opportunity to join (or opt out of) the class action, so they launched their own new/separate lawsuit. A federal judge has just shut them down.

4 M-U Drillers are in Top 10 ESG Oil & Gas Companies; EQT is #1

    September 24, 2021September 24, 2021

We’ve noticed nearly all of the public companies (and many private companies) in the oil and gas space are talking about their ESG (environmental, social, governance) programs. There’s a lot of hot air surrounding ESG programs. How does one separate out fact from fiction? Enverus, the company that produces (in our opinion) the best and most accurate weekly rig count numbers, has a solution. Enverus has developed a new framework/system to compare one oil/gas company’s ESG efforts against its competitors. Of the top 10 best ESG programs in the oil and gas industry are four companies (drillers) in the Marcellus/Utica. Coming in at the #1 position is none other than the largest natural gas driller in the country: EQT.

Natural Gas Marketed in North America Slides 4% in 2Q21

    September 24, 2021September 24, 2021

Each quarter NGI (Natural Gas Intelligence) runs the numbers and publishes a list of the 25 top natural gas marketers in the U.S. These are not necessarily the top 25 producers of natural gas (although in some cases they are), but the top 25 sellers (vendors, jobbers) of natural gas. NGI’s latest quarterly report shows overall the biggest sellers of natgas lost ground once again in 2Q21, which continues a 2+ year trend of year over year declines in the amount of gas sold.

CNX Foundation Accepting Grant Applications Thru Oct 31st

    September 24, 2021September 24, 2021

In April, CNX Resources Corp. announced instead of just blowing smoke about ESG (environmental, social, governance) with pretty slide shows and hoopla, they would donate $30 million to local, underserved communities and populations in the tri-state region (see CNX Investing $30M in Underprivileged Communities in Tri-state Area). In July, CNX announced the formation of a new nonprofit to oversee the distribution of that money–to make sure it really helps those who need it, called the CNX Foundation (see CNX Creates Nonprofit to Oversee $30M Community Fund). The CNX Foundation yesterday announced it is officially open for business, accepting applications for grants.

UK Energy Crisis is a Picture of What Awaits US Under Biden Plan

    September 24, 2021September 24, 2021

What will happen to the United States if it embarks on sleepy Joe Biden’s “vision” for dumping fossil fuels via regulation and over taxation and instead turns to so-called renewable sources of energy, all in a bid to keep Mom Earth from supposedly toasting? We know what will happen. It’s already happening in the United Kingdom. We have a perfect preview of what will hit us if we adopt the same policies the UK and Europe have adopted: electricity prices out of sight, shortages of natural gas, blackouts and brownouts, high unemployment, and an economy in the crapper.

Troubling: PennEast Pipeline Withdraws NJ Eminent Domain Lawsuits

    September 23, 2021September 23, 2021
    click for larger version

Some deeply disturbing news out of New Jersey. You may recall that PennEast Pipeline, a 120-mile, primarily 36-inch pipeline that will cost $1 billion to build and run from Dallas, Luzerne County, in northeastern Pennsylvania, and terminate at Transco’s pipeline interconnection near Pennington, Mercer County, New Jersey, won a huge and important victory at the U.S. Supreme Court in June (see PennEast Pipeline Squeaks Out 5-4 Supreme Court Victory Over NJ). The victory allows PennEast to use eminent domain to run the pipeline across property owned or controlled by the State of New Jersey. Yet PennEast notified federal court this week it is withdrawing its eminent domain case against NJ for 42 properties the state either controls or owns. What the heck is going on?

OH Supremes Rule Duke Energy Can Build 14-Mile Cincinnati Pipeline

    September 23, 2021September 23, 2021
Pipeline route (click for larger version)

In early March MDN told you that Duke Energy had begun work on building a 14-mile natural gas pipeline near Cincinnati, OH to replace an old pipeline built in the 1950s (see Duke Energy Finally Begins to Build 14-Mile Cincinnati NatGas Pipe). It seems no sooner had work begun than another frivolous lawsuit by antis brought it to a halt. This latest case, argued before the Ohio Supreme Court, was decided yesterday. In a unanimous decision, the court rejected antis’ arguments. The pipeline can finally get built beginning this month.

PA Gov. Wolf Floats Climate Plan to Force End of Gas-Fired Power

    September 23, 2021September 23, 2021

Lest you think we’ve been overstating the case that Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf wants to end the use of natural gas-fired electric power plants as evidenced by his actions in forcing the state to join the draconian Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) carbon tax scheme, Wolf’s latest so-called climate plan will remove all doubt for you. Yesterday Wolf and his obsequious Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary Pat McDonnell released a 278-page “climate” plan that, among other things, essentially bans natural gas-fired power plants.

Weather & Offline Cove Point LNG Cause M-U NatGas Prices to Fall

    September 23, 2021September 23, 2021

The weather turning a bit cooler along with a three-week planned maintenance outage at the Cove Point LNG plant in Maryland is causing the spot price for natural gas in the Marcellus and Utica to fall precipitously. Of course the price recently, over the past few weeks, rose precipitously–so a sudden fall is not all that unusual. How much has the price fallen and how far will it go down?

Citi Predicts $6 Gas in U.S. 4Q; Could Spike to $100/MMBtu

    September 23, 2021September 23, 2021

While natural gas prices have always floated up and down, lately we’ve seen a rapid run-up in the NYMEX futures price that hit a seven-year high last week (see To the Moon! NYMEX, Spot NatGas Prices Jump $0.20 to Fresh Highs). Since then the price has come down a fair bit. There has been chatter that the NYMEX price might hit $10/MMBtu this winter if we have a particularly long and cold winter. An investment advisory note from Citigroup now says if we get a bitter cold snap, prices at the NYMEX may hit $100/MMBtu!
