Tioga County Landowners Win UGI Takings Case at PA Supreme Court

    December 1, 2021December 1, 2021

Back in June, MDN told you about a long-running lawsuit in Tioga County, PA by landowners who claim that UGI has taken their mineral rights as part of operating the Meeker Storage Field, an underground natural gas storage facility (see Tioga County Landowners Appeal UGI Takings Case to PA Supremes). The landowners lost the lawsuit in the Court of Common Pleas of Tioga County (trial court) in March 2019. The landowners appealed to Commonwealth Court and lost there too, in November 2020. The landowners appealed again, to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. On Monday, Nov. 29, the Supremes ruled in favor of the landowners. It pays to be persistent!

Chesapeake Energy Names New CFO to Replace Promoted Dell’Osso

    December 1, 2021December 1, 2021
    Mohit Singh

In October, Chesapeake Energy, a large and important driller in the northeast Pennsylvania Marcellus, announced it was promoting the company’s longtime CFO Domenic Dell’Osso Jr. to become the new CEO of the company (see Chesapeake Makes it Official – CFO Dom Dell’Osso New CEO). Dell’Osso has now selected his replacement for the job of CFO. Mohit Singh will become Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer effective December 6, 2021. Who is Singh and where has he worked?

EQT Launches Endowments for Greene, PA and Wetzel, WV

    December 1, 2021December 1, 2021

The EQT Foundation was established in 2003 as a dedicated resource for financial, in-kind, and volunteer support to communities where EQT works and has a presence. Since its inception, the EQT Foundation has awarded more than $60 million to nonprofits throughout the operational footprint of EQT. That is an amazing number! In honor of Giving Tuesday, yesterday EQT announced the launch of two new giving programs to support the communities of Greene County, PA, and Wetzel County, WV.

M-U Industry Responds to Sen. Warren re LNG Exports & Prices

    December 1, 2021December 1, 2021

Earlier this week MDN told you about a nastygram written by U.S. Senator Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren (see EQT Calls Pocahontas’ Scapegoating of LNG Exports “Reckless”). Warren sent her nastygram to 11 big natural gas producers, including EQT, Range Resources, and Southwestern Energy, blaming them for high natural gas prices because they export some of their gas. EQT responded that Warren is being “reckless” with her “scapegoating of LNG and the oil and gas industry.” Now the entire Marcellus/Utica industry, via its three leading trade associations, is responding with a letter of its own sent back to Warren.

What Will Winter and 2022 Bring for NGL Production & Prices?

    December 1, 2021December 1, 2021

According to the experts at RBN Energy, “If there was ever a year that proves NGLs march to the beat of a different drummer, 2021 was it.” Production of NGLs went *up* during the pandemic, not down. Prices have been up, down, and all around. Like all oil and gas markets (markets of any kind, really), there is no one, specific factor or reason why NGL production and prices are doing what they are doing. It is a complex soup of factors that affect the NGL market–a market that’s increasingly vital for Marcellus/Utica producers.

Hilcorp CEO Says Co. Aims to be Best “Late-Life” Operator in O&G

    December 1, 2021December 1, 2021

Hilcorp is a major driller founded in 1989 by Jeff Hildebrand. It is THE largest privately-held (stock not publicly traded) oil and natural gas exploration and production company in the U.S. Headquartered in Houston, TX, Hilcorp has over 1,825 employees in multiple operating areas including the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Alaska, and (yes) in the Marcellus/Utica. While they don’t have a huge presence here in the northeast, Hilcorp does actively drill shale wells in Lawrence County, PA and Columbiana County, OH. A recent Forbes article based on an interview with Hilcorp CEO Greg Lalicker proved to be a revelation for us: Hilcorp is not unlike Diversified Energy (or maybe it’s the other way around).

13 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Nov 22-28

    December 1, 2021December 1, 2021

It seems as if Pennsylvania has been on a yo-yo lately. Three weeks ago PA issued just two permits to drill new shale wells. Two weeks ago PA issued 15 permits! And now, for last week (Nov. 22-28), PA flipped back to just two new permits again. What’s going on? Did the DEP take most of last week off for the Thanksgiving holiday? Perhaps. Ohio pulled our region’s bacon out of the fire by issuing 11 new permits last week for Utica shale wells. West Virginia drillers got skunked with zero new permits last week. All totaled there were just 13 new permits issued last week in the M-U, down from 32 the week before.

Marcellus Production Nears Record High; Regional Gas Price Drops

    November 30, 2021November 30, 2021

According to S&P Global Platts, gas production from the Marcellus and Utica shales, since the beginning of November, has “surged,” rising by nearly 1 Bcf/d (billion cubic feet per day), or up about 2.7%. The surge means production is now near record highs–in the upper 34 Bcf/d range. However, the M-U is constrained by pipeline takeaway and finite local markets. With rising supply and steady demand, prices are doing what Econ 101 predicts: beginning to fall.

Institutional Investors Come Off Sidelines, Invest in M-U Stocks

    November 30, 2021November 30, 2021

Contrary to the false narrative spun by leftist media that “everyone,” especially large institutional investors, are divesting from and refusing to buy new investments in stocks of companies that drill for oil and natural gas, some of the largest institutional investors came off the sidelines and some (for the first time ever!) got into the game by investing in individual shale gas stocks in the Marcellus/Utica during the third quarter of 2021. Which big investors did the investing and how much did they invest/purchase in the way of stock? We have all the deets below…

Southwestern Hedges Future Production to Pay for GEP Haynesville

    November 30, 2021November 30, 2021

Earlier this month Southwestern Energy announced it had struck a deal to buy GEP Haynesville, a subsidiary of GeoSouthern (see Southwestern Energy Buys 2nd Haynesville Driller for $1.85B). When the deal is done, GEP will add another 700 MMcf/d (million cubic feet per day) to Southwestern’s already hefty production. The new flows will boost Southwestern production to 4.7 Bcf/d (billion cubic feet per day)–within striking range of matching or maybe even surpassing EQT as the country’s largest gas producer. Now, how will Southwestern pay for GEP?

NRG Joins 2nd NY Gas-Fired Power Plant to Appeal DEC Permit Denial

    November 30, 2021November 30, 2021

We told you in October 2020 that a pair of natural gas-fired power plants in and near New York City were fighting for their lives (see 2 NY Gas-Fired Plants Fight for Survival, Promise Hydrogen Someday). Both plants seek to upgrade the gas-fired technology used to generate electricity. Beholden to leftwing radicals in her own party, New York’s new Governor, Kathy Hochul, denied requests from both plants in October (see NY’s Corrupt DEC Rejects Permits for 2 NatGas-Fired Power Plants). Two weeks ago one of the two projects signaled it will appeal that political denial (see Hudson River Gas-Fired Plant Plans to Appeal DEC Permit Rejection). The other project has just done the same, appealing the Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) permit denial.

16 State Treasurers Threaten Banks that Divest from Fossil Fuels

    November 30, 2021December 1, 2021
    Riley Moore, WV State Treasurer

West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore is leading a coalition of 16 states threatening banks that play politics by refusing to lend money to fossil fuel companies. Moore says WV and the other states are “not going to take it anymore.” We first told you about a similar coalition back in May, when they sent a letter to the haughty John Kerry, telling him to quit pressuring banks to deny loans to fossil fuel companies (see M-U State Treasurers Threaten Banks that Won’t Lend to Fossil Fuels). The coalition (with some new members) is back and is fighting mad.

NOTE: MDN corrected this post to reflect the fact that OH and PA are not a part of this most recent coalition. However, OH and PA previously participated in a similar coalition (back in May) challenging John Kerry and the Biden administration’s calls for banks to divest from fossil fuels. Thank you to a sharp MDN reader for noticing the change in states participating in this new coalition!

How Will Spire STL Court Case Affect Future Pipeline Projects?

    November 30, 2021November 30, 2021

Leftist tyrants are no longer content to block new shale and pipeline projects. They’ve been largely successful doing that. They have now moved on to attacking existing shale and pipeline projects, hoping to shut them down. Completely evil people. Case in point: The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) targeted the Spire STL pipeline, a 65-mile pipeline that connects to and flows Marcellus/Utica gas from the Rockies Express (REX) pipeline to more than 640,000 residents and businesses in the St. Louis, Missouri area. If the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) does not extend an emergency certificate for the project, it will close down on Dec. 13–in two weeks’ time. How does this new development of the left weaponizing our courts against us affect other existing pipelines? Will the darkness grow and threaten other assets?

Olympus Energy (formerly Huntley & Huntley) is expanding its drilling program in Upper Burrell, in Westmoreland County, PA, near Pittsburgh (see Olympus Energy’s 3rd Upper Burrell Well Pad Wins Unanimous Approval). Along with all the new wells the company is drilling comes the need for pipelines to flow the gas, and along with the pipelines comes a need for a compressor station. Olympus has filed for permission to build a new compressor station.
