Marcellus Pipe Builder Otis Eastern Sells Itself to Atlanta Co.

    August 28, 2020August 28, 2020

Pipeline builder Otis Eastern, headquartered in Wellsville, NY (western part of Upstate) has built a lot of pipelines throughout the northeast since its founding in 1936. In recent years the company has worked on a number of Marcellus/Utica projects, including Energy Transfer’s Mariner East 2 project and National Fuel Gas Company’s Marcellus Gas to Market project. Otis is selling itself for an undisclosed amount to a much larger company, Artera Services, LLC, based in Atlanta, Georgia.

How Many More OH Legislators Guilty of Bribes in FirstEnergy Case?

    August 28, 2020August 28, 2020

We’ll ask the question no one else dares to ask publicly: How many more Ohio legislators are in the back pocket of FirstEnergy (i.e. Energy Harbor), guilty of taking part in an alleged $60 million bribery scandal that paid politicians to ensure Energy Harbor would get $1.1 billion of ratepayers’ money to prop up their economically failing nuclear power plants? It sure seems like there may be other Ohio legislators who have been paid off too, given their unwillingness to support the effort to overturn House Bill (HB) 6 and end the gravy train for Energy Harbor.

Marcellus E-Fracking Company Evolution Well Sued for Overtime

    August 28, 2020August 28, 2020

Evolution Well Services, headquartered in Houston with a regional office in Pittsburgh, specializes in “electric” fracking–using natural gas from the well pad (instead of diesel fuel) to power turbines to create electricity that drives fracking pumps. Evolution fracks for at least one Marcellus/Utica E&P (see Another Marcellus Driller Converts to Electric Fracking). Earlier this week an Evolution worker filed a lawsuit against Evolution in Allegheny County court claiming the company owes him (and others, if he can turn it into a class action) back pay for overtime the company forced them to work.

Enverus Onshore Rig Count Down Again; Marcellus @ 25, Utica @ 6

    August 28, 2020August 28, 2020

It’s been two weeks since we’ve updated the Enverus onshore rig count numbers. The good news is that the Marcellus/Utica region is staying steady with the Marcellus at 25 active rigs and the Utica at 6 active rigs (paltry numbers compared to months and years past). The bad news is that the count for the entire country is down from 280 a few weeks ago to 275 as of yesterday. That’s still higher than the record low of 264 in July.

Pieridae Hires Senior VP to Run Goldboro LNG Export Project

    August 28, 2020August 28, 2020
    Andy Mukherjee

For years we’ve had a Canadian LNG export project on our radar, bringing you news about the project, hoping that prodigious amounts of Marcellus/Utica gas would be used at the plant. The project is called the Goldboro LNG project, planned by Pieridae Energy for the coast of Nova Scotia. The project just moved closer to reality with the hiring of an LNG industry veteran to lead the development effort.

Mountain Valley Pipe Asks FERC for 2-Yr Extension to Finish Project

    August 27, 2020August 27, 2020

It’s been an uphill battle to complete Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), a 303-mile Marcellus/Utica gas pipeline from Wetzel County, WV to Pittsylvania County, VA. The project has been vigorously opposed by radical environmentalists from the beginning. Frivolous lawsuit after frivolous lawsuit has been filed by Big Green groups bankrolled by billionaires. Finally in June Equitrans, the builder, said they should be able to complete the 92% done pipeline by next spring (see Mountain Valley Pipe Will be Done and In-Service Early 2021). That is now in doubt. MVP made an official request with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to extend the completion deadline by an extra two years.

PA Enviro Hearing Board Allows ME2 to Restart Work

    August 27, 2020August 27, 2020

NOTE: This post has been corrected from a previous version. Sunoco Logistics Partners’ work on underground drilling to install sections of the Mariner East 2X pipeline in Chester County, PA has resumed in one of two locations–Shoen Road. The work there was stopped by the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) after Sunoco Logistics reported hitting (but NOT spilling any mud into) a water aquifer in the area.

    WV Gov. Jim Justice

Just when you thought West Virginia Governor Jim Justice could be trusted with oversight of the state’s Marcellus/Utica industry, he goes and spoils it. Justice, who made his fortune in coal, is once again trash-talking shale gas. This time Justice is questioning a proposed shale gas-fired power plant planned for Brooke County.

Equinor (Statoil) Cutting US Workforce, No New M-U Drilling 2020

    August 27, 2020August 27, 2020

Oil and gas drilling giant Equinor (formerly called Statoil) is owned by the Norwegian government. Equinor/Statoil has drilled in the Marcellus/Utica for years. As recently as June 2019 the company reported drilling 9-14 Utica wells per year (see Equinor (Statoil) Drilling Long Utica Laterals, Production Up 5X). But then in March of this year, just prior to the pandemic, the company decided to temporarily suspend it’s Utica (and Bakken) drilling program (see Equinor (Statoil) Stops All U.S. Shale Drilling, Incl. Marcellus). The company is now saying it won’t drill any more new wells this year in the U.S. and is cutting jobs here (and in Canada and the U.K.).

SWPA Union Members Rally Against Gov. Wolf’s RGGI Carbon Tax

    August 27, 2020August 27, 2020

We have chronicled the break between trade unions and Pennsylvania. Gov. Tom Wolf over Wolf’s stubborn insistence on forcing the state to join a carbon tax scheme called RGGI–the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (see our union stories here). Union members know that RGGI will kill the Marcellus industry in the state and lead to massive job losses–all in the name of fixing so-called climate change. Yesterday union members in southwestern PA rallied at a power plant to (once again) voice their strong opposition to Wolf’s highly unpopular plan.

Williams, a huge midstream (pipeline) company has issued its net-zero carbon goal (all the cool kids are doing it). Williams says it will achieve net-zero carbon by 2050.

Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) has built a number of natural gas-fired electric generating plants here in the Marcellus/Utica region. The most recent CPV gas-fired plant to go online in our area was a 1,050-megawatt plant in Cambria County, PA (see CPV Marcellus-Fired Electric Plant in Cambria Goes Online Early). CPV just announced they’ve secured financing and will move forward with building a new plant near Chicago. M-U gas will feed it, at least in part.
