New England: No Gas Pipes Mean Sky-High Energy Costs on the Way

Sky HighWe hate to say “I told you so,” but we’ll say it anyway. If you live in New England, prepare yourself. You’re about to experience more price shocks for natural gas and electricity (4x more than the rest of the country, or higher). Why? Because you’re blocking new pipeline projects that would bring cheap, abundant, clean-burning natural gas to the region. The Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale sits a few hundred miles away–yet very little Marcellus gas is flowing to New England at this point. New England, more than any other region in the country, relies on natgas to power electric generating plants. Without extra supplies, especially in the winter months when natgas gets used for heating, electric generators are forced to pay obscenely high rates to stay in operation. Those obscenely high rates get passed along to ratepayers–businesses AND residences. Yet anti-fossil fuel wackos continue to try and stop new pipelines, sometimes criminally (see Part of AIM Pipeline Begins to Flow; Protesters Hide in Pipe). A new report just issued (full copy below) by the New England Coalition for Affordable Energy says New England is at a much greater risk for higher energy costs in the short-term because of lack of new pipelines…

Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline – Supporters and Detractors in Southeast PA

MDN has written dozens of articles about Williams’ Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline project, a $3 billion, 198-mile project running through 10 Pennsylvania counties to connect Marcellus Shale natural gas from PA with the Williams’ Transco pipeline in southern Lancaster County. It is a much-needed pipeline to move more Marcellus gas south, to new markets (see a list of our Atlantic Sunrise articles here). What’s the current status? It’s going through a regulatory review with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Back in May the project received a favorable Environmental Impact Statement from FERC (see Williams’ Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline Gets Positive EIS from FERC). Williams expects final FERC approval later this year or early next year, despite negative feedback from the Obama EPA, Obama Dept. of Interior, and despite ongoing frivolous lawsuits from the likes of THE Delaware Riverkeeper. Mark our words: this project will get built. Below are a couple of bits of news about Atlantic Sunrise. One is about a recent debate, held in Lancaster Monday evening, among three candidates for the PA Senate. Predictably the Democrat is against Atlantic Sunrise, and the Republican is for it. Also below is news that the usual nutty suspects, including the Allegheny Defense Project, Appalachian Mountain Advocates, the Sierra Club (among others) have filed yet another request with FERC to block the project by changing the already-issued favorable EIS…

Part of AIM Pipeline Begins to Flow; Protesters Hide in Pipe

Spectra Energy’s Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) pipeline project is an $876 million expansion of the existing Algonquin pipeline system that will carry 342 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to New England states that badly need the gas. On March 3, 2015 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued their final approval for the project, allowing it to go forward. Construction began last year and continues now. Earlier this year NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo tried to stop work on the pipeline (see Gov. Cuomo Asks FERC to Halt Algonquin Pipeline Near Nuke Plant). A few months later NY’s lib Dem senators got in on the act (see NY’s 2 Radical Senators Call for Halt in Building Algonquin Pipeline). We’re happy to report none of the above efforts to stop AIM succeeded. Last week FERC issued an order allowing part of the AIM project–in Putnam County, NY, and Fairfield County, CT–to power up and begin service. However, not all of the project is yet built. Four nutjob protesters criminally locked themselves inside a piece of pipeline in Verplanck (Westchester County), NY yesterday. They were there to protest “filthy fossil fuels” like natural gas…

23 Pipeline Protesters Arrested for Blocking VA Governor Mansion

    Mountain Valley Pipeline proposed route
Mountain Valley Pipeline proposed route – click for larger version

A group of hippies–young hippies to old hippies–got tired of just parading like horses rear-ends for three days in front of the governor’s mansion in Richmond, Virginia and decided they’d like to go to jail instead. The group of so-called protesters, people there at the bidding of the radical Chesapeake Climate Network, were there to protest against fossil fuels. Specifically they don’t want to see the Mountain Valley Pipeline built–a $3.5 billion, 301-mile pipeline that will run from Wetzel County, WV to the Transco Pipeline in Pittsylvania County, VA. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recently indicated the project is on the path to approval (see FERC Gives WV to VA Mountain Valley Pipeline Provisional Thumbs Up). The governor can’t do anything about the pipeline as it is regulated by the federal government, but you can’t teach spoiled rotten leftists about things like the rule of law. They want VA Gov. McAuliffe (a fellow Democrat) to somehow stop the pipeline. Oh, plus they wanted to get their picture in the newspaper. So the lined up like the childish babies they are to block the entrance to the governor’s mansion–and got themselves arrested…

NatGas a Zero Carbon Emissions Energy Source?!

zero-carbonSpeakers at this weeks Energy Dialogues LLC’s North American Gas Forum in Washington, DC were up on their high horses lecturing the natural gas industry that if we only can get our heads out of our backsides and clamp down on fugitive methane emissions we might actually get to stay around a few more decades, providing fuel to power the world. That’s the gist of the comments we read by so-called environmental “leaders” who spoke at the event. (Arrogant snobs, if you ask us.) But the one thing that really caught our attention was the statement that it may be possible to capture and control carbon from burning natgas to the point that it becomes a “zero-emitter.” Bet you never thought you would see “natural gas” and “zero carbon emissions” in the same sentence, eh?…

Duke University Exposed for Scientific Grant Fraud

fraudDuke University, as MDN has chronicled, has a long history of pumping out faux research that bashes fracking and fossil fuels, “research” that’s bought-and-paid-for by the Park Foundation, one of Duke’s major contributors (see What’s Missing in Latest Duke “Radioactive” Study? Real Science; Yet Another Duke University Study Smears the Marcellus Industry; Duke Hit Piece on Shale Water Usage from Same Park-Sponsored Prof; Duke U Study: Property Values Drop When Marcellus Drilling Begins; and Latest Case of Duke U Bought & Paid “Research” by Park Foundation). Higher education is a cesspool of such sponsored junk science. Now comes word that a whistleblower is accusing Duke of doctoring research data in a scheme to grab $200 million in grant money. While this particular instance does not appear to be connected to previous faux research that bashes the Marcellus Shale, we will point out is that there appears to be a climate (pun intended) of dishonest research occurring at Duke University. It always boils down to “follow the money”…

Obama and Man-Child Leo DiCaprio Talk Global Warming at WH Event

sxsl-climate-talkRight at the top of our list of things that tick us off are uber-arrogant Hollywood actors who pretend to have gray matter in their heads, especially on the issue of man-made global warming. At the top of that list, for us, is the man-child pretender Leo DiCaprio. He parades around pretending that he’s some sort of expert on global warming. He nakedly states that if you have a different opinion from him on the topic of global warming, your right to free speech should be yanked away. He is, as most leftists are, a totalitarian at heart. Someone with more in common philosophically with Adolf Hitler than with Mahatma Gandhi. Man-child DiCaprio was parading his stuff on Monday at the White House, hosting a talk with Our Supreme Leader, B.H. Obama. Although Obama is a full-throated global warming fanatic who wants to end the use of fossil fuels, he is, nevertheless, a pragmatist. To his credit, Obama gave lukewarm support to natural gas as a “bridge fuel” that will (for now) lower carbon emissions, while waiting for his so-called precious renewables to become commercially viable and take over the energy world. Here’s how it went down on the South Lawn of the White House on Monday…

Post Carbon Institute’s Peak Marcellus Gas Theories Obliterated

post-carbon-instituteIn 2014 David Hughes from the so-called Post Carbon Institute made one of the stupidest remarks he’s ever made when he said, “I think the Marcellus is getting pretty close to the peak in [total] production…I wouldn’t be surprised to see a peak in the Marcellus this year, maybe next year at the latest.” Dumb. Marcellus (and Utica) production has done nothing but go up since that time. Oh, the last few months the EIA has reported that Marcellus production is declining–a little bit. But that’s because of a lack of new drilling due to low low prices, a situation that is right now turning around. You can expect Marcellus production to pick up again very soon. The fact is, there is decades (perhaps centuries) of Marcellus/Utica Shale gas supplies waiting to be tapped–with no let-up in sight. Forbes contributor Jude Clemente, one of our favorite Forbes writers, goes on a riff to talk about the huge amount of gas available in the northeast, and its key role in U.S. production…

Peters Twp Gives the Middle Finger to Drillers One Final Time

peters-twp-washington-county-paPeters Township, the most populous township in Washington County, PA, is one of the seven selfish towns that sued the state over the zoning provisions in the Act 13 law, eventually winning at the PA Supreme Court level (see PA Supreme Court Rules Against State/Drillers in Act 13 Case). The Act 13 victory gives townships the right to pass local zoning ordinances that restrict–but don’t ban–Marcellus/Utica drilling. Peters has been adept at using the victory to keep drilling banned by “studying” the issue to death (see Peters Twp, PA Pretends to Debate Ordinance to Allow Drilling). That pattern of behavior continued into last year (see Peters Twp, PA Continues to Delay Drilling by “Studying” It). Sooner or later you have to come down on one side or the other, and Monday night Peters decided–to screw Marcellus drillers. Town council passed a new drilling ordinance (4-2) that says drilling is ONLY allowed in areas zoned for industrial uses, which rules out areas zoned for agricultural uses (where most drilling happens). Even the drilling in industrial areas, a grand total of 138 acres in the township, will have to be a “conditional use” with loads of permits and reviews. In other words, Peters just flipped off the drilling industry, telling them “don’t ever bother drilling here”…

Mt Pleasant Twp Approves Range Well Near School

approvedSomething noteworthy is happening in southwest Pennsylvania. Landowners and pro-gas supporters are turning out at local hearings to support more drilling. Case in point: Range Resources had applied for a permit to build a drill pad near a local elementary school in Mt. Pleasant (Westmoreland County), PA. Moms Clean Air Force and other anti-drillers turned out to oppose the plan. A local town board meeting was packed to capacity. However, a majority of those packing the meeting were pro-gas and wore t-shirts with “Land Owners United” printed on them. Cool! About time our side began to turn up for these meetings to support the industry…

Radical Enviros Ask EPA to Lie About Facts in Fracking Report

would-you-lie-for-me2 Corinthians 6:15: “What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?” The obvious answer to the Apostle Paul’s hypothetical question in that passage is, “There is no harmony. A believer can’t partner with an unbeliever.” Yet that’s just what is happening among the ranks of anti-fossil fuel fools. We’ll explain. On Monday the usual suspects, namely the misnamed and odious Food & Water Watch and 200 or so of their closest “friends”–including the Sierra Clubbers, Natural Resources Defense Council, et al ad naseum (people who never think for themselves)–sent a letter (full copy below) to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy asking her, begging with her, pleading with her, to pretty-please change the results of the EPA’s own scientific study, performed by dozens (hundreds?) of scientists who analyzed 950 studies on fracking, conducting nine of their own primary studies, and concluding that fracking doesn’t contaminate ground water supplies (see EPA Draft Report Says Fracking Doesn’t Pollute Groundwater Supplies). Such a conclusion is heresy for the nutters at FWW and their buds. Ever since the EPA’s finding last year leftists have been agitating (what they do best) to try and get the EPA to change (lie about) the science-based conclusions in the report. Real scientific conclusions make no difference to this bunch. Why the Bible verse at the opening? Two of the 200 groups signing this latest letter to McCarthy were (a) Franciscan Response to Fracking, which is part of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pompton Lakes, NJ, and (b) The God is Dead Theology Movement. Pretty strange bedfellows, wouldn’t you say?…

Radical Enviros Beg FERC to Pull Plug on PennEast Pipeline

bamboozleYet another desperate attempt by radical environmentalists to stop the much-needed PennEast Pipeline from getting built. Yesterday the New Jersey Conservation Foundation (NJCF) and Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association (SBMWA) asked (more liked begged) the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to withdraw the PennEast application, something called a “no alternative” action, and just let it die a stillborn death. Their argument to FERC seems to rely on the old tactic of “if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull$#@!.” Because a few sympathetic rads exist within government agencies like the EPA and Fish & Wildlife Service, and because those agencies were co-opted into sending negative comments about the project to FERC, the radicals at NJ Conservation and Stony Brook Watershed tell FERC it’s best just to scrap the whole thing. No sense in continuing. Move along–nothing else to see here. A nice try at bamboozling FERC, but it’s an agency wise to such deceptions…

Militant Enviros Turn Ugly at Trump Protest Following Speech

MDN editor Jim Willis attended the Marcellus Shale Coalition’s Shale Insight conference last Wednesday and Thursday in Pittsburgh (see Highlights from 2016 Shale Insight, Day One and Highlights from 2016 Shale Insight, Day Two – Trump!). We had heard, via media reports, that protesters would be present to try and disrupt The Donald’s talk on Day Two of the event (last Thursday). But we didn’t hear or see anything–at least during the conference. Trump’s keynote address was the closing talk at the conference. After he finished speaking, Jim made a beeline back to the MDN booth to get started packing it away since the conference was essentially over (officially ended at 1 pm). After shipping the booth and returning to the place where Jim was staying, he decided to change and, being a fantastically sunny and warm day, head several blocks away to a Starbucks for latte and to sit and get some work done on stories for last Friday. Literally around the corner from where Jim was staying, on Sixth Avenue in Pittsburgh, is an exclusive members-only club called The Duquesne Club. In walking past the club Jim noticed a large police presence, along with a remnants of what looked like the usual suspects he sees at protest rallies–a mix of college kids and old hippies with long gray hair tied back in a pony tails. Jim also saw PA House Speaker Mike Turzai walking on the sidewalk in front of the Club. So he wondered if perchance The Donald had gone to the club for lunch following his speech. Sure enough, in checking the news, Trump held a fundraising dinner at the Club immediately following his speech at Shale Insight. Since the protesters weren’t even noticed (by the press) at the mammoth David L Lawrence Convention Center where Trump spoke, they figured they would get noticed if they jammed the street in front of The Duquesne Club instead. And sure enough, it worked. Police were there in riot gear, and it’s a good thing, because some of the protesters were borderline violent–threatening to break into the private club…

THE Dela. Riverkeeper Sends Letter to Congress: Shut Down FERC

investigationMaya van Rossum, who is THE Delaware Riverkeeper (the river’s mamma), got 182 of her friends, whom she calls “organizations” to sign a letter and sent it to the U.S. Senate demanding (she always demands, never politely asks) for hearings into the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Why? Because they’re actually doing their job–and that just can’t stand. Instead, she wants FERC shut down so no new pipeline projects will get approved. That’s the only acceptable outcome for Mamma Maya. She alleges that FERC is misusing its power under the federal Natural Gas Act. One of Mamma Maya’s friends, CORNball Paul Gierosky (cofounder of COalition to Reroute Nexus, or CORN) says: “FERC is corrupt and needs to be reformed.” What hubris…

Fossil-Fuel-Hating Sierra Clubbers Plan to Protest Shale Insight

haterAnti-coal, anti-natural gas, anti-oil, anti-logic…the radicals who make up the Sierra Club are anti-everything. They can’t even stand themselves! Self-loathing seems to be a requirement for membership. The Allegheny sub-group of the Sierra Club is planning to protest in front of the David L Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh this coming Thursday morning. Why? Because presidential candidate Donald Trump is scheduled to speak and they HATE HIS GUTS. They also hate frackers and those who support them, like your humble editor. There’s no better unifier on the left than hatred. MDN will be on location at the event and if we get a chance we’ll snap a picture or two of the nutters out front protesting. Meanwhile, here’s the Sierra Club game plan for Thursday…

Obama EPA Official Called OMB “Dickheads” re Fracking Regs

potty-mouthA senior official in the Obama administration who works for the Environmental Protection Agency has a potty mouth. That’s probably the rule rather than the exception. However, this particular potty mouthed person–Michael Goo (formerly the EPA’s policy chief)–has been caught colluding with radical environmentalists at the nutty Sierra Club. Goo called some of the people working at the White House Office of Management and Budget “dickheads” because they were opposed to implementing federal regulations to control fracking. Quick reminder: The U.S. Constitution leaves development of oil and gas resources up to the individual states to regulate. That is, the federal government cannot (legally) regulate fracking, a part of oil and gas development. But the Fascists inside the Obama administration earnestly lust for and desire the power to control oil and gas drilling–not only on public lands, but on private lands as well. Using a Freedom of Information Act request, the Energy and Environment Legal Institute got its hands on a text message sent by Goo to the Sierra Club lamenting about the “dickheads” at OMB. Goo has been caught red-handed using input from the Sierra Club to craft official government regulations…
