Big Election Night for Republicans & Pro-Gas Candidates

Yesterday’s election was, by all accounts, historic. It was a complete and utter repudiation of Barack H. Obama and his aggressive socialist policies–there’s no denying that. Republicans picked up governorships in most states where they ran. The one cloud was, unfortunately, Pennsylvania where California environmentalist wacko Tom Steyer’s $10 million+ purchased the governorship for the hapless Democrat Tom Wolf. One bright spot in PA (we challenge you to find this news in your local newspaper today) is that Republicans picked up MORE seats in both the PA House and Senate. Which means unless Republicans cave, there will be no severance tax to shut down Marcellus drilling in the Keystone State–at least for the next few years. Whew. In New York, Republicans (beyond all belief) held on and improved their majority in the Senate. The NY Senate is the only firewall against legislative action to permanently stop fracking in the Empire State. Whew. And what’s this, New England moves Republican???…

Cuomo Dithers and Towns Like Gerry, NY Pay the Bill

Not only has NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s dithering and refusal to make a decision on whether or not to allow horizontal hydraulic fracturing in the state materially harmed tens of thousands of landowners and farmers in the state (not to mention all of those who would have had high-paying jobs in the industry), it’s also harmed taxpayers in places like Gerry (Chautauqua County), NY. Because Cuomo dithered and Norse Energy went bankrupt, a division of Norse, Norse Pipeline, also went bankrupt because the gas wasn’t available to run through their pipeline in places like Gerry. That pipeline was sold to Emkey and a court has just re-adjusted the assessment of that pipeline’s value–from $2,616,444 to $320,439, causing Gerry to lose $2,305,368 of its tax base. Not only that…

Election Day 2014: PA & NY at the Crossroads

MDN has largely stayed out of detailed coverage of tomorrow’s election cycle. For those in New York, we recommend to you the always-excellent Joint Landowners Coalition of New York, a 70,000-member organization that seeks to get drilling moving in the Empire State. The JLCNY has a list of pro-gas candidates that they support here. We can’t point you to a similar list for PA (or WV or OH), although we assume such sources exist. If so, list them below in the comments! However, we do want to share with you a press release from the Pennsylvania Independent Oil & Gas Association (PIOGA) concerning the election of PA’s next governor. Tom Wolf (largely an anti-drilling Democrat) is running against Tom Corbett, the incumbent Republican who is pro-gas. Wolf recently made what we consider to be a lunatic statement–worthy of institutionalization. He said slapping a new 5% severance tax on natural gas production in the state will actually help the drilling industry! How does one even respond to such utter stupidity?…

Cuomo Staff Explains “End of Year” Deadline for Frack Report

In the recent (and only) gubernatorial debate held in New York State, the man-child Andrew Cuomo, someone who can’t make a decision, when questioned/pressured about the issue of the now six-year moratorium on fracking, gave (yet another) new deadline for when he’ll make a decision. Cuomo said that the report due from the state Dept. of Health, originally due in February of 2013, but delayed from unknown reasons, will be ready by “the end of this year.” If we had a nickel for every time Cuomo has lied about the DOH report and about when a decision on fracking would be made, we’d be millionaires. A few days after the debate Cuomo’s staff had to clean up Andy’s poopy mess and say that the end of the year isn’t the man-child’s deadline–oh no–that deadline is what the DOH itself has privately told the man-child. In other words, more political CYA just in case the report doesn’t materialize by “end of year”…

NY Anti-Driller Steingraber Tries to Get Re-Arrested at Seneca Lake

In March 2013, Ithaca College “distinguished scholar in residence” Sandra Steingraber, along with 11 other anti-drillers, were arrested for illegally blocking the entrance to a depleted salt mine along the shore of Seneca Lake near Watkins Glen, NY that Crestwood Midstream wants to use to store liquefied petroleum gas, i.e., propane (see NY Protesters Arrested for Blocking NatGas Storage Facility). Steingraber actually went to jail because she refused to pay a fine for her stunt (see NY Anti-Drilling Protesters Jailed After Refusing to Pay Fine). Since it’s been over a year since she was in the slammer, Steingraber must have the itch to go back in (it sometimes happens to convicts), so she convinced a few retirees with nothing better to do to stage a new illegal blockade of the facility. Of course, with no activity at the facility–on hold because New York Gov. Cuomo can never make a decision about anything dealing with natgas–the illegal blockade didn’t much matter to anyone but a few reporters…

Stop That (Bakken Oil) Train!

The wackos at Earthjustice, along with the nutty Sierra Clubbers and a few other anti-fossil fuel groups have sent a petition to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the NY Dept. of Environmental Conservation essentially calling crude oil trains carrying Bakken light crude over tracks in New York rolling bombs. The so-called environmental groups are calling on Cuomo to stop shipments of Bakken crude that traverse the state on the way to the Port of Albany where the oil is loaded onto ships and moved to refineries in the Gulf. Texas Coastal Energy Company (TCEC) is a small but growing exploration and production company. TCEC was founded in 2011 by Jeff Gordon, an experienced (and third generation) Texas oil man. The company has drilled perhaps a dozen wells so far (maybe more, it’s hard to tell from their website). Why are they on our radar? TCEC is opening a new office in Manhattan, New York City. NY High Court Rebuffs Norse Request to Re-hear Town Ban Case

We won’t bother to chronicle, once again, the long fight in New York State over the right of a town board with 3-5 members deciding that every resident in a township will lose the right to use their property the way they want to (even though property ownership is sacrosanct under the U.S. Constitution). In the People’s Republic of New York, the mob rules. The rule of law is out the window. And so, a few New York high court judges who want to retain their posts under Gov. Andrew Cuomo, decided nobody really reads the Constitution anymore anyway–and that local town boards (not individual landowners) will now decide whether or not shale drilling will take place (see Shale Drilling in NY is Over – High Court Upholds Town Bans). One of the litigants in the case was Norse Energy, forced into bankruptcy by New York’s now 6+ year moratorium on fracking. Norse took over leases from Anschutz Exploration and sued the Town of Dryden, NY over their idiotic frack ban. Based on a recent Colorado case that is similar (and found against so-called “home rule” by towns), Norse asked New York’s highest court to re-hear the case (see Norse Energy Appeals Town Ban Case Back to NY High Court). Dunkirk NY Electric Plant Natgas Conversion Challenged in Lawsuit

There is precisely one (and only one) decision that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has made with regard to clean-burning natural gas that we know of. Last December Gov. Cuomo trudged through three feet of snow in Dunkirk, NY to announce a deal had been struck to convert the local coal-burning electrical generating plant to burn natural gas instead (see Dunkirk, NY Electric Plant Saved – Converting from Coal to NatGas). If the plant is not allowed to convert, it will close and 435 megawatts of electricity will disappear, and along with it, 40% of the taxes paid to local governments and the local school district will evaporate too. You might think environmentalists would be happy to have the plant convert from “dirty” coal to clean-burning natural gas. How have they responded? By filing lawsuits against the conversion…

If a mafia boss walks into a business owner’s store and “informs” that owner that the owner will start doing things the good fellas way (pay money, say 10% of all revenue) in return for “protection” from the “bad guys” that otherwise may make a visit to that place of business, it’s called a shake down. If we substitute “New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman” for mafia boss and “oil/gas company” for business owner, you’d have what’s just happened in New York State–and it’s called “good government.” Schneiderman isn’t personally getting rich from the deal he’s just forced down the throats of two major o&g companies (we don’t think, anyway). But make no mistake–the businesses Schneiderman targets would lose massive amounts of money in lower stock valuations if they don’t agree to Schneiderman’s “offer.” Schneiderman held the gun of his office to the collective heads of Anadarko Petroleum and EOG Resouces over the issue of fracking (something not even happening in NY), and they agreed to dance and sing his tune. NY Anti Drillers Apoplectic Over Soil in Chemung Co. Landfill

A bunch of ~~former hippies who are now~~ anti-drilling activists in the Twin Tiers area of New York (Elmira/Corning area) protested at the Chemung County legislature meeting last night. Protesting what? That the Chemung County landfill, which has been accepting drill cuttings from PA shale drilling for something like two years now, is considering expanding the landfill to make more money from PA’s drillers.
