EQT’s WV to VA Pipeline Open Season a Success, FERC Filing in Oct

In early September MDN told you that EQT and NextEra Energy were getting hitched–in a joint venture for the 330-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline project that will run from Wetzel County, WV to Pittsylvania County, VA (see EQT & NextEra Tie the Knot on WV-VA Pipeline Joint Venture). The happy couple, with EQT in charge, announced a binding open season for the proposed pipeline. Yesterday EQT said the open season has been successful with 2 billion cubic feet of capacity locked up in 20 year deals–but they’re waiting a few more days, until this Friday, before closing the door. EQT also said yesterday they expect to begin their pre-filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) later this month. Later this year they’ll begin open houses to discuss the project with communities where the pipeline will run. If everything goes according to plan, the pipeline will go online sometime around November 2018…

Wheeling Water Warriors Take on Drilling Under Ohio River in WV

With blue capes unfurled and their Spandex tights removed from deep in the back of the closet (and it’s not even Halloween for another three weeks), the ~~aging hippies known as the~~ Wheeling Water Warriors have found a new purpose (since GreenHunter still hasn’t built a barging facility in Wheeling, WV, confounding their life’s mission). That new purpose? To oppose fossil fuel extraction in the state–wherever it happens. Right now it’s a righteous cause to prevent drilling under the Ohio River. Court Adds Another $600K to $3M Fine for Trans Energy in WV Case

A month ago MDN told you about a steep fine Trans Energy, a West Virginia Marcellus driller, agreed to pay for screwing up 15 creeks and swamps with dirt they pushed around for drilling purposes (see Trans Energy Fined $3M for Polluting WV Creeks & Swaps with Dirt). The money will be split 50/50 between the federal EPA and the WV Dept. of Environmental Protection. Trans Energy was in U.S. District Court yesterday to plead guilty to three misdemeanor charges of negligently violating the Clean Water Act. That will tack on another $600,000 in criminal fines to the $3M already agreed too ($200K for each violation). Ouch. The number that really hurts, however, is that Trans Energy will spend more than $13 million to complete the restoration and mitigation work required by the consent decree they signed yesterday…

Antero Hits Producing Well Drilling New Well, Methane in Local Water

Antero Resources has been cited with a Notice of Violation (NOV) from the WV Dept. of Environmental Protection for breaching one of their own existing and producing shale wells when drilling another well on the same pad. The incident occurred at Antero’s five-well Primm Pad in Doddridge County, WV near West Union. While drilling a new well they poked a hole in an existing well and potentially in an abandoned well–meaning methane is now flowing to places it shouldn’t be flowing. The WVDEP has given Antero until today to get the situation under control. Unfortunately it looks like it may have affected (gulp) up to a dozen of the neighbors’ water wells with migrating methane…

Magnum Hunter Takes the Prize: Top Producing Utica Well

Magnum Hunter has announced they’ve drilled the most southern (geographically) Utica Shale well ever drilled. The surprise is that it’s drilled in Tyler County, WV. The further surprise is that it’s one of the most productive Utica or Marcellus well ever drilled. Is it THE most productive well ever drilled? We don’t know for certain, but we think so. Magnum Hunter’s Pipeline System Boosts Volumes in OH/WV

A second announcement from Magnum Hunter over the past two days is not nearly as important as the first–but interesting nonetheless. Magnum Hunter announced yesterday that Eureka Hunter–Magnum’s pipeline gathering subsidiary–has bumped up the volume of gas flowing through the system to an average 316,500 million Btus per day, or roughly 307 million cubic feet (Mmcf) per day. Fully one-third of the gas flowing through the system, which is located in West Virginia and Ohio, comes from another Magnum Hunter subsidiary–Triad Hunter. Wetzel County, WV Schools Score $4.7M Surplus from Marcellus

What a difference a few years makes. Not so long ago school districts in Wetzel County, West Virginia were forced to cut electives and take other belt-tightening measures due to lack of funds. For fiscal year 2013–the current budget year–the school has an extra $4.7 million in revenue to spend (more than 10% of it’s overall budget). It’s a complete reversal from just two years ago. Where did the extra funds come from? Did Sen. Jay Rockefeller open his extensive coffers (worth $100 million or more) and bestow money on the county? Nope. Did the teacher’s union renegotiate salaries down for their members? Not on your life–what are you crazy?! Did the state send along some of its surplus? What surplus? The state actually cut back on their aid to the county. The answer, of course, is that Marcellus drilling has taken off in Wetzel in a big way and property tax collections have gone through the roof…

WV PSC Gets Fed Money to Increase Truck Inspections Near Drilling

Truck drivers in West Virginia–particularly in areas where there’s a lot of Marcellus Shale drilling activity–you’ve been put on notice by the WV Public Service Commission (PSC) that they’re stepping up the frequency of inspections. The WV PSC has received a $180,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that allows them to pay for overtime for officers to step up the number of truck inspections. Gastar’s First Utica Well Shines – Nearly 30 Mmcf/d

Gastar Exploration is out today with an operations update for their Utica drilling program. The company reports initial production on their first-ever Utica Shale well, drilled in Marshall County, WV, is flowing at a rate of 29.4 million cubic feet of gas per day. Those numbers easily put Gastar’s first Utica well among some of the top performers. 3 Big Compressors Coming with Columbia’s OH Pipeline Project

Representatives for Columbia Gas Pipeline are making the rounds and talking with officials in various communities where the planned expansion of their pipeline will happen. Columbia, as MDN previously reported, is spending $1.75 billion on two pipeline projects that will help move Marcellus Shale gas to the Gulf Coast (see Columbia Gas: $1.75B for 2 Projects to Send Marcellus Gas to Gulf).
