PA DEP Approves Shale Wastewater Injection Well in McKean County

    January 25, 2024January 25, 2024

Here’s a story that escaped our radar…until now. Catalyst Energy, Inc., proposes converting an existing gas production well on Route 646 in Cyclone (Keating Township in McKean County, PA) into a shale wastewater injection well. The well would handle up to 30 truckloads of wastewater per day. The prospect of the traffic and location near some homes did not sit well with some local residents. However, the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) approved the plan on Jan. 11, although it didn’t publicly announce the approval until Tuesday, Jan. 23.

OH Supremes Revive Lawsuit Against ODNR for Closing Injection Well

    January 25, 2024January 25, 2024

Here’s a story we haven’t written about in over three years. American Water Management Services (AWMS) owns a wastewater injection well in Trumbull County that supposedly caused a low-level earthquake (that nobody could feel) in 2014. Actually, there are two injection wells located at the site, both operated by AWMS. They were both “temporarily” shut down by the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources following the quake nobody could feel (see ODNR Temporarily Shuts Down Injection Wells After Low-Level Quake). ODNR allowed AWMS to reopen one of the injection wells but denied it the right to reopen the second well. AWMS appealed the closure of the second well all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court in 2018.

2019 NY Enviro Law is Blocking New Oil & Gas Drilling, as Designed

    January 25, 2024January 25, 2024

In June 2019, the New York State legislature passed a horrific “energy” bill that was later signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (see New York Pulls the Trigger, Commits Energy Suicide with New Law). The new Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) law limits carbon dioxide emissions to zero (an impossibility) by 2050. The following manufacturing industries in the state are being forced to close or move out of the state because of the law: glass (say goodbye to the entire community of Corning), steel, cement, auto, metal casting, food, pulp and paper, aluminum, plastics, ceramics, and chemicals. Oh! And don’t forget conventional oil and gas drillers who report the CLCPA is making it impossible to drill new wells. Jobs are disappearing from the O&G industry.

US NatGas Production Hit New All-Time High in December Led by M-U

    January 25, 2024January 25, 2024

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is reporting U.S. dry natural gas production in the Lower 48 states reached an all-time monthly high of 105.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in December 2023. In 2023, Lower 48 dry natural gas production increased 3.7% (3.6 Bcf/d) from 2022. Dry natural gas production increased 3.8 Bcf/d in the fourth quarter of 2023 (4Q23) compared with the average for the first three quarters of 2023. The increase was led by production from the Marcellus/Utica region, followed by the Permian.

Black Gold: Ascent & Encino Drill Oil Gushers in Ohio Utica

    January 24, 2024January 24, 2024

Yesterday we brought you the latest update on EOG Resources’ oil drilling program in the Utica Shale (see Black Gold: EOG Resources Drills Gushers in Ohio Utica). Today we have details about two more companies and their Utica oil drilling programs: Ascent Resources and Encino Energy. Last summer, we told you that Encino, which picked up Chesapeake Energy’s Ohio O&G assets, including 933,000 Ohio acres with 320,000 net Utica acres and 920 operated and non-operated Ohio Utica wells for $2 billion in 2018 (see Stop Press: Chesapeake Sells ALL of its Ohio Utica Assets for $2B), had finally cracked the code on coaxing oil from the Utica Shale (see Oil Prod. in Northern Utica Comes Alive – Encino Cracks Oil Code). Encino is now Ohio’s top oil producer.

PA Dem Senators Introduce Bill to Ban Most Marcellus Drilling

    January 24, 2024January 24, 2024

Pennsylvania House Bill (HB) 170, introduced early last year, would increase setback distances for shale wells from 500 feet to 2,500 feet — effectively killing any new shale well drilling anywhere in the state (see PA House Bill 170 Kills New Marcellus Drilling Using Setbacks). In June, Democrat Party bosses shut down action on HB 170, telling the House to cancel a vote (see PA Dems Abandon Bill to Kill All Marcellus Drilling Using Setbacks). But the wackadoodle left couldn’t help itself. In October, the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, under the “leadership” of Chairman Greg Vitali (D-Delaware), held a hearing to revive action on HB 170 (see PA Sen. Yaw Calls HB 170 Banning New Drilling Via Setbacks “Stupid”). And now, Senate Democrats want in on some of the “stupid is as stupid does” action. On Monday, two Dem Senators introduced a Senate version of the same bill — Senate Bill (SB) 581.

The Truth About Pennsylvania’s “Abandoned” Oil & Gas Wells

    January 24, 2024January 24, 2024

From time to time, the issue of wells that need plugging appears in the news. We highlighted one such story earlier this week (see XTO Begins to Plug 4 Shale Wells in Butler County Starting Today). There is some confusion over the terms inactive, abandoned, and orphaned wells. What’s the difference? And how does this issue impact the Marcellus/Utica? The sharp folks at the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) recently published a blog post to clear up the confusion.

WV Oil & Gas Inspector Shortage Continues One Year After New Law

    January 24, 2024January 24, 2024

In March 2023, the West Virginia legislature passed House Bill 3110, giving the state Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) extra funds to hire more oil and gas well inspectors. At that time, the state had just ten inspectors to oversee not only all of the state’s 75,000 documented/known wells but also the state’s estimated 15,000 abandoned wells. Frankly, it’s an impossible task for so few inspectors. HB 3110 provided funding for another 10 positions (20 inspectors total). In the past year, the DEP has hired another five, with two more in the pipeline, for a total of 17. It would be better if they had 40 or more!

Maine Debates Democrat Bill to Limit New Natural Gas Customers

    January 24, 2024January 24, 2024

In May 2023, MDN brought readers the sad news that New York State has fallen and is now under a Communist dictatorship, with the freedom to choose energy sources now gone (see NY State has Fallen – Gas Stoves & Peaker Plants Banned in Budget). Gov. Kathy Hochul and the Democrat legislature unilaterally voted to ban new homes and businesses from connecting to natural gas lines. It took five months, but eventually, a coalition of businesses and labor unions filed a lawsuit against the state to block this blatantly illegal power grab (see Biz & Labor File Lawsuit to Stop NY Statewide Gas Ban in New Bldgs). The State of Maine is now considering a similar law.

Study Finds Electric Compressors Reduce Emissions, but Risky

    January 24, 2024January 24, 2024

One week ago, the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) Foundation published a report called “Impact of Electrifying Natural Gas Transmission Compression” (full copy below). The Foundation commissioned global consulting and technology services provider ICF to assess and write a report on the potential impacts of electrifying natural gas transmission compression as one tool to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions along the natural gas supply chain. What did the researchers find?

Forwards Mkt Predicts Low NatGas Prices in 2024 from LNG Delays

    January 24, 2024January 24, 2024

Analysts for S&P Global Commodity Insights have been pouring over the forward prices for natural gas contracts in 2024 and the news is not good. Traders actively bidding on forward contracts in 2024 have priced natural gas below $4/MMBtu. In the forwards market, the summer 2024 strip was $2.45/MMBtu as of Jan. 22, after spending most of 2023 solidly above $4/MMBtu. December 2024 Henry Hub forwards settlements have averaged $3.69 year to date, according to data from S&P. The reason for prices remaining low for all of 2024? A delay in several new LNG export operations from coming online.

Black Gold: EOG Resources Drills Gushers in Ohio Utica

    January 23, 2024January 23, 2024

Perhaps our headline is slightly misleading. EOG is not the modern equivalent of Jed Clampett walking along and seeing crude bubbling up out of the ground (as in the fictional The Beverly Hillbillies show of the 1960s with the “Ballad of Jed Clampett” that says, “Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.”). What EOG and other Ohio drillers (like Encino Energy and Ascent Resources) have done is more like rocket science than winning a lottery. The oil has been locked away in the Utica/Point Pleasant shale layer for millennia. Aubrey McClendon, co-founder and former CEO of Chesapeake Energy, was the first to see the vision of freeing oil from the Utica.

PA Bill Mandates 30% of Electricity Come from Solar/Wind by 2030

    January 23, 2024January 23, 2024

Whenever the government mandates which energy sources residents can and cannot use, residents lose. The government’s micromanaging of energy is a prescription for high prices and supply chain failures (i.e., blackouts). Yet leftists like Pennsylvania Rep. Danielle Friel Otten (a radical Democrat from the Philadelphia area) never seem to learn. She introduced a bill, House Bill (HB) 1467, that requires 30% of all electricity used in the state to come from unreliable renewables like wind and solar by the year 2030 — six short years from now. It is a prescription for massive failures in the power grid in the Keystone State.

U.S. Southeast Requests More Marcellus/Utica Gas for Power Gen

    January 23, 2024January 23, 2024

Here’s the reality. People are moving out of states like New York due to high taxes and the stripping away of freedoms. Those of us living in NY now live in virtually a Communist state (and we’re not exaggerating). We can’t choose our energy sources. We can’t even use single-use plastic bags at the grocery store! NY has fallen. But NY’s mass exodus is the gain of states in the Southeastern U.S. Florida is the number one destination. Also high on the list are North Carolina and Georgia. With the increase in population, and the rapid influx of new business, and the push to convert automobiles to use electricity instead of gasoline, utility companies in the Southeast are asking (more like begging) for permission to build new natural gas power plants to meet all of the new demand for electricity. Of course, the extra gas somehow has to get to the plants.
