EIA Predicts North American LNG Exports More Than Double by 2027

    November 14, 2023November 14, 2023

According to the prognosticators at the U.S. Energy Information Administration, North America’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity will expand to 24.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by 2027 (four years from now) from the current 11.4 Bcf/d we see today. However, the increase will not all come from the United States. Both Mexico and Canada are due to place their first LNG export terminals into service in the next few years. By the end of 2027, EIA estimates LNG export capacity will grow by 1.1 Bcf/d in Mexico, 2.1 Bcf/d in Canada, and 9.7 Bcf/d in the U.S. from 10 new projects across the three countries.

NERC: Half of U.S. Faces Elec Blackouts This Winter – Lack of NatGas

    November 14, 2023November 14, 2023

The North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) is sounding the alarm that more than half of the U.S. and parts of Canada, home to around 180 million people, could fall short of electricity during extreme cold again this winter. Why? If you read certain leftwing publications, they will say we’re heading for blackouts due to an overreliance on natural gas. According to NERC and its just-released 2023–2024 Winter Reliability Assessment, the coming outages are because we don’t rely ENOUGH on natural gas! That’s right. NERC (and FERC) say we need more pipelines and natural gas to shore up a lack of supplies during the worst cold snaps. The lack of natural gas leads to a lack of fuel for electric power plants (and for people who use it to heat their homes). Both agencies, but NERC in particular, say we need more pipelines, and we need them NOW.

MVP Sues Two Protesters for Conspiracy, Blocking Pipe Construction

    November 13, 2023November 13, 2023

In September, Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), which has been hassled and harassed endlessly by so-called “protesters” and foreign-backed Big Green groups, sued some 40 protesters and two Big Green groups for $4 million for their ongoing illegal activity to block the final bits of the 303-mile project (see MVP Files Lawsuit Against Anti Groups, Protesters for $4 Million). Many individual protesters were unknown and not identified by name in the September lawsuit. We now know about two of them. Last week, MVP filed a second lawsuit for unspecified damages against Daniel Guidry (from Georgia) and Ashley Stecher Wagner (from California) for their alleged ongoing illegal activities in blocking construction, accusing them of conspiracy in organizing others to do the same.

Epsilon Energy 3Q – Production & Profits Slide in the Marcellus

    November 13, 2023November 13, 2023

Epsilon Energy, a relatively small company, used to concentrate most of its effort on developing Marcellus Shale wells. However, over the past year or so, the company has expanded into other plays and now owns assets in the Anadarko (Oklahoma and Texas) and the Permian (Texas and New Mexico). Epsilon typically does not do its own drilling. The company joint venture partners with (gives money to) other companies, like Chesapeake Energy (in the Marcellus), and the other company typically does the drilling. The company’s net gas production during 3Q23 was 2.0 Bcfe (billion cubic feet equivalent) in total, NOT per day. That amounts to an average of 21.5 MMcfe/d (million cubic feet per day), down 14% compared to 2Q23 due to seven PA wells being offline for workover operations. Epsilon generated revenues of $6.3 million for 3Q23, down 3% from 2Q23.

ECA Marcellus Trust I Gives Investors Half a Penny Dividend 3Q

    November 13, 2023November 13, 2023

ECA Marcellus Trust I, the royalty interest holder in some of the wells drilled and maintained by Greylock Energy in Greene County, PA, announced it would issue six-tenths of a penny ($0.006) dividend to unitholders for 3Q23. The company paid out 4.3 cents per unit in 1Q23 and nothing in 2Q23 (see ECA Marcellus Trust I Gives Investors No Dividends in 2Q23). The company continues to hold back some profits ($90,000 in 3Q23) to build a cash reserve for “future known, anticipated or contingent expenses or liabilities.”

    U.S. Rig Count Hits New 2023 Low – Loses 2 @ 616, M-U Even @ 40

    November 13, 2023November 13, 2023

The U.S. rig count fell again last week, dropping another two rigs to 616 active rigs — the lowest rig total this year and the lowest count since February 2022. The count in the Marcellus/Utica stayed the same at a collective 40 active rigs. However, the M-U mix changed once again. Pennsylvania lost another rig, going from 20 to 19 last week, after dropping two rigs the week before (see U.S. Rig Count Hits New 2023 Low – Loses 7 @ 618, M-U Adds 1 @ 40). Ohio picked up the lost PA rig, going from 12 to 13 active rigs (after picking up two rigs the week before). It seems all the momentum is in the Ohio Utica right now. West Virginia stayed the same with 8 active rigs.

Joe Manchin Does Right Thing, Announces Retirement from Senate

    November 13, 2023November 13, 2023

Score one for the good guys! We (collectively in the Conservative movement) have defeated Joe Manchin (Democrat) and his potential run for another term as Senator from West Virginia. Manchin, in our opinion, lost the moral authority to run again when he sold out the country and his fellow West Virginians by voting to approve Joe Biden’s Green New Deal disaster, otherwise known as the Inflation Reduction Act (see Tragedy: Joe Manchin Caves & Agrees to Big Green Build Back Better). At that point, it was obvious Manchin could not be trusted and must go, and we have called for his ejection from office since that time. We’re more than happy to see it happen, given the damage the IRA has done and is doing to the natural gas industry (see Joe Manchin’s Green New Deal Cave Slaps O&G with Big Methane Tax).

Europe Turns Up Pressure on Venture Global LNG for Not-Ready Farce

    November 13, 2023November 13, 2023

Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass LNG export facility recently received Federal Energy Regulatory Committee (FERC) authorization to place the final three liquefaction blocks (7-9) into service (see Venture Global Gets FERC OK to Commission 3 Calcasieu Pass Trains). The other trains, 1-6, have been online for 18 months but are not officially in commercial service, even though the facility has now shipped over 200 cargoes! Venture Global claims it’s still working out the kinks. Venture’s contracted customers are frustrated that they aren’t getting any shipments and have sued (see Repsol Joins Shell, BP in Suing Venture Global for Missed LNG). Venture’s customers are turning up the heat even more, asking the EU-US Task Force on energy security to get involved and force Venture Global to begin shipments to its contracted customers.

EOG Uses Permian Completion Design on Utica Test Wells

    November 9, 2023November 9, 2023

In 2020, EOG Resources, one of the largest oil and gas drillers in the U.S. (with international operations in Trinidad and China), sold all of its Marcellus assets, which were located in Bradford County, PA, to Tilden Resources for $130 million (see EOG Resources Sells Marcellus Assets for $130M, Exits Basin). EOG left the M-U building, so to speak. But the company couldn’t stay away. Last November, we told you that EOG admitted to stealthily amassing 395,000 net acres in the Ohio Utica for very little money (see EOG Resources Accumulates 395K Acres in Ohio Utica for Under $500M). EOG calls its position the “Ohio Utica combo play” and considers it among its “emerging plays.” EOG concentrates on oil drilling in the Utica. As part of its third quarter update, EOG said it is seeing promising results from test wells in the Utica, and that going forward, the Utica will compete with EOG’s foundational Delaware Basin (Permian) and Eagle Ford programs for drilling budget.

Civil War Erupts in PA Enviro Movement re Gov. Shapiro Deal with CNX

    November 9, 2023November 9, 2023

Last Friday, MDN brought you the news that CNX Resources CEO Nick DeIuliis had signed a voluntary deal with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro to expand drilling setbacks and several other regulatory steps not mandated for shale drillers under PA law (see CNX Signs Deal with PA Gov. to Increase Setbacks, Other Changes). Shapiro’s office front-loaded the news with comments of support from several Democrat-led environmental organizations, including the Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC), PennEnvironment, the Philly-based Clean Air Council, the PA Chapter of the Sierra Club, Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania, and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). However, since last week, a number of the more radicalized “environmental” groups have made their views known that they don’t like the deal. A civil war among PA’s environmental left has erupted.

Pieridae Gives Up on Plan to Build Goldboro LNG in Nova Scotia

    November 9, 2023November 9, 2023

The ignominious end of an era. For a full ten years, MDN has covered the story of Canadian company Pieridae Energy and its quest to build the Goldboro LNG export project in Nova Scotia, using Marcellus/Utica molecules to feed it (see our extensive list of Pieridae stories here). Yesterday, Pieridae issued its third quarter update. In that update comes the news that the company has “initiated a process to sell its Goldboro subsidiary and associated assets, licenses and permits.” Throwing in the towel. A sad day.

Calling Out Venture Global LNG for Farce It’s Not Commercially Ready

    November 9, 2023November 9, 2023

The other trains, 1-6, have been online for 18 months but are not officially in commercial service, even though the facility has now shipped over 200 (!) cargoes. Venture Global claims it’s still working out the kinks. Venture’s contracted customers are frustrated that they aren’t getting any shipments and have sued (see Repsol Joins Shell, BP in Suing Venture Global for Missed LNG). It’s time to call out Venture Global for the farce it is engaging in, a farce that is doing damage to the entire LNG industry.
