Production Cutbacks Take Hold in Marc/Utica…but Not All Areas

    June 1, 2020June 1, 2020

MDN recently told you that EQT, the largest natural gas producer in the country, has shut-in roughly one-third of its regular natural gas production through the end of June (see EQT Shuts in 33% of NatGas Production in Pennsylvania, Ohio). Cabot Oil & Gas, another large producer, said during its Q1 update it would shut-in some of its production in 2020 too (see Cabot 1Q20: Production Up 4%, Free Cash Flow, Curtailing Wells). These cutbacks along with cutbacks by other M-U drillers have had an “immediate” impact on production in the Marcellus/Utica. But the impact is not the same throughout the entire region.

Steyer Big Green Group Dumps $200K of Dark Money in SEPA Elections

    June 1, 2020June 1, 2020

In a transparent effort to buy local politicians and their votes against fracking, pipelines and for high carbon taxes, a California-based group linked to billionaire Tom Steyer has dumped almost $200,000 of “dark money” into Pennsylvania elections in the Delaware Valley (southeastern PA). Steyer is also attempting to buy candidates in Virginia, Nevada, Michigan, North Carolina and Oregon. In Chester County, Steyer is buying races for three radical Democrats in the upcoming primary…

Yet Another (Virtual) Hearing on Northeast Va. Pipeline Project

    June 1, 2020June 1, 2020
Header Improvement Project (click for larger version)

On May 12, over the objections of anti-fossil fuel nutters, the Virginia State Corporation Commission held a virtual hearing on Virginia Natural Gas’ (VNG) Header Improvement Project–a project to build 24 miles of new pipeline and two new compressor stations (expanding a third compressor), connecting to the mighty Transco pipeline system to flow Marcellus/Utica gas to the northeast Va. region (see Va. Turns Down Anti Request to Delay Hearing on VNG Pipe Project). Even though the hearing got held, the Corporation Commission has been pressured by antis to hold a second hearing–on June 8.

9th Circus Upholds Obama Judge’s Block of Nationwide Pipe Permits

    June 1, 2020June 1, 2020

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (i.e. Cirus), located in California, has struck again. We previously told you about an Obamadroid judge in Montana who illegally blocked the use of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nationwide Permit 12 for oil and natural gas pipelines (see Obama Judge Blocks New Pipe Projects that Use NP12 Permit). The judge’s ruling was appealed to the clowns at the Ninth Circus and they have refused to overturn the Montana judge’s bad ruling.

Peregrine Energy Partners Buys More Royalty Rights in SWPA & WV

    May 29, 2020May 29, 2020

Peregrine Energy Partners, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, continues a program to buy royalty rights in the Marcellus/Utica. In January 2019 we told you about Peregrine’s purchase of rights from undisclosed sellers in southwest PA (see Peregrine Energy Buys Royalty Rights in Greene County, PA). In March of this year, Peregrine purchased more rights, in Fayette County, PA. Yesterday the company announced they’ve purchased yet another round of rights–in Washington, PA and two counties in WV.

PA Supremes Hear Oral Arguments in Can of Worms Royalty Lawsuit

    May 29, 2020May 29, 2020

On Wednesday the Pennsylvania Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case challenging whether or not the state Attorney General’s office has the right to use a consumer protection law to prosecute companies like Chesapeake Energy and Anadarko over royalty payment shenanigans. The law the AG’s office wants to use has never been used that way before. According to legal experts, drillers are very concerned if the AG’s office wins this one, as we reported last November (see Chesapeake Royalty Lawsuit at PA Supreme Court – Can of Worms?).

Rig Count Drop Accelerates Again, 24 Gone Including 1 Marcellus

    May 29, 2020May 29, 2020

For the past month and a half, MDN has brought you rig count data from Enverus (formerly Drillinginfo) each Friday. Last Friday we reported the count had hit a new modern-day low, but that the Marcellus had gained back one of the seven rigs lost over a previous three week period (see Enverus: Drop in Rig Count Slows Again, Marcellus Picks Up 1 Rig). Today’s update shows rigs hitting another new modern-day low, with the Marcellus giving up the rig it gained last week. How much lower can the rig count go?

So-Called “Study” Links PA Fracking to Birth Defect in Horses

    May 29, 2020May 29, 2020

A new so-called “study” published in the journal Science of The Total Environment claims it has uncovered a link between fracking chemicals in farm water and a rare birth defect in horses. The researchers say this study “could” serve as a warning about fracking and human infant health. Is this it? Were we wrong for the past 11 years about the safety of fracking? Is this THE END?

Summit Midstream Merges with Itself; Bob McNally Joins Board

    May 29, 2020May 29, 2020

Summit Midstream Partners, formed in 2009 and headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas, operates natural gas, crude oil and produced water gathering (pipeline) systems in six unconventional resource basins, including the Marcellus and Utica. The company concentrates its time and money on four “core focus areas” including the Utica, the Williston (i.e. Bakken), the DJ Basin, and the Permian. The company announced yesterday it has completed the buyout of a subsidiary and merged it in. Hidden in the bowels of the press release we discovered Bob McNally, former (ousted) CEO of EQT Corporation, has joined the board of directors at Summit.

PWC Sells U.S. Magnolia LNG to Different Company for $2M

    May 29, 2020May 29, 2020

Two weeks ago MDN brought you the news that consulting powerhouse PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), which had been hired to liquidate the assets of Australian company LNG Limited (LNGL), had found a buyer for the Magnolia LNG export project for $2.25 million (see PWC Sells U.S. Magnolia LNG to U.K. Company for $2.25M). Scrub that. The buyer never came through with the money, so PWC has found a second buyer, for $2 million. The fire sale continues.

Weekly Shale Permits Issued for PA, WV (but Not OH)

    May 28, 2020May 28, 2020

No sooner had we started producing weekly new shale permits issued reports than the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) website experienced some sort of catastrophic failure. While portions of the site have now returned, they still do not have the database reconnected that delivers weekly updates for new permits. We decided we could not wait any longer on ODNR to get their act together. Below are weekly reports detailing the names and locations for each new permit issued in both PA and WV for the weeks of May 11-15, and May 18-22.

PA House Passes Bill Separating Conventional from Shale Regs

    May 28, 2020May 28, 2020

Yesterday the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 790, a bill that restores sanity to regulations for conventional oil and gas drillers in the Keystone State. For years PA’s small, independent conventional oil and gas drillers have objected to the one-size-fits-all regulations concocted by the Gov. Tom Wolf Administration that applies the same regulations to them as to big shale drillers. The two types of drilling are apples and oranges. To make small conventional drillers jump through the same hoops as big shale drillers will bankrupt many of the smaller companies. SB 790 helps correct the situation.

IEA Predicts Biggest Collapse in Global Energy Investment in History

    May 28, 2020May 28, 2020

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the “lifeblood” of the global energy system is…investment. That is, money. Without investment, new sources of energy don’t appear. In 2016 IEA began to publish an annual report called World Energy Investment, in order to track spending on all forms of energy worldwide. Earlier this week IEA published its fifth annual version of the report. In the report, IEA says 2020, because of the coronavirus pandemic, will mark the largest-ever collapse in global energy investment in history. IEA says the coming investment decline will impact oil the most.
