EQT Settles Lawsuit Against Former Rice Employee

    September 5, 2019September 5, 2019

In February, prior to the July takover by Toby and Derek Rice, EQT filed lawsuits in both Pennsylvania and federal courts against two former employees it had fired, claiming the employees, before they were fired, had systematically copied confidential information from company computers and took it with them when they left (see EQT Claims 2 Fired Workers Stole Confidential Information). In March, EQT alleged the employees “stole” the information to help the Rice boys in their bid to take over EQT via a proxy war (see EQT Accuses Fired Employees of Colluding with Rice Boys). EQT just settled/dropped one of the two cases.

Ohio has Money, Needs Contractors to Plug Orphan Wells

    September 5, 2019September 5, 2019

It’s time to help the orphans in Ohio–orphan wells, that is. Ohio has some 1,000 orphaned/abandoned oil and gas wells. In early 2018 Ohio passed a new law making more funds available to plug orphaned wells–important because drilling a horizontal shale well through an old conventional/orphaned well can result in a disaster. Although Ohio now has plenty of money to plug their orphaned wells, there’s a shortage of contractors to do the work.

In July the Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) granted an air permit for a compressor station in Weymouth (see Mass. DEP Issues Air Permit for Weymouth Compressor Station). The compressor station is the final component of the Spectra Energy/Enbridge Atlantic Bridge expansion project–a federal project overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Although MA issued the air permit (the main permit), there are several other state permits required, not yet issued.

Ohio Utica O&G Production in 2Q19: Oil Jumps 29%, Gas Up 11%

    September 4, 2019September 5, 2019

9/5/19 NOTE: ODNR’s original percentages were incorrectly calculated. A day after releasing the wrong numbers, ODNR fixed the wrong numbers in their 2Q19 update. Frankly, we should have noticed the original error, and didn’t. The raw production numbers were right there before our eyes, yet we simply relied on ODNR’s incorrect percentages and drew the wrong conclusions. See below for the corrected numbers.

Researchers Discover Low-Cost Way to Find New Shale Gas in PA

    September 4, 2019September 4, 2019
Penn State researchers mapped decline curve data on an interactive map (Credit: Penn State, click for larger version)

Penn State researchers say they’ve found a better, lower cost way to identify potential high yield areas for Marcellus Shale gas extraction. How? By using well production data taken from more than 5,600 existing wells, and only for wells with at least two years of production logs, the researchers created decline curves. They then extrapolated those curves to the entire PA Marcellus region and say they can predict, with a pretty high degree of accuracy, the amount of gas that would be extracted if a new well were drilled in a given location. How cool is that?!

Transco Pipe Expansion in NJ Now Online Serving Extra 1M Homes

    September 4, 2019September 4, 2019

A brief pause to enjoy an unqualified victory over the wackadoodles at the litigious New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club. Williams has just placed into service its Rivervale South to Market Project in New Jersey, now flowing enough fracked Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale gas to service an extra 1 million homes in the northeastern U.S. The Clubbers opposed the project and ultimately couldn’t do a thing to stop it.

Mariner East Pipe Witch Hunt Continues; PA DEP Defends Employees

    September 4, 2019September 4, 2019

In the American legal system those accused of wrongdoing, including those afraid of being entrapped by so-called law enforcement (like the Chester County, PA District Attorney Tom Hogan) are entitled to legal representation–to protect themselves from the abuses of people like DA Hogan. Yet when they do so, avail themselves of legal representation, Hogan gets bent out of shape. Could it be he *has no case* and wants to bully people into admitting to things they are not guilty of? Or force them to falsely testify to things the prosecutor wants to hear?

MarkWest Continues to Expand NGL Infrastructure in the Wet M-U

    September 4, 2019September 4, 2019

Our friends at RBN Energy recently launched a new mini-series of blog posts delving into Marcellus/Utica gas processing and fractionation in the wet gas region–meaning southwest PA, eastern OH, and the northern panhandle of WV. We previously brought you part 1 of that series (see Overview of Gas Processing & Fractionation in M-U Wet Gas Region). Today we have part 2, which takes a close look at MPLX (i.e. MarkWest Energy) and the key role their processing plants play in allowing NGL production in the M-U to continue growing.

Green County, PA Embraces Shale Energy in Rebranding Effort

    September 4, 2019September 4, 2019

Greene County, PA, located in the far southwestern corner of the state, last night unveiled a new marketing/rebranding initiative called “Greene County, a Powerful Place.” Greene is making a play to attract investment from the natural gas industry’s downstream (manufacturing) sector. It is a full-throated endorsement of the Marcellus/Utica shale industry and the petrochemical industry that goes hand-in-hand with shale.

Connecting the (Corrupt) Dots Between DRBC and Dela. Riverkeeper

A Washington Examiner op-ed column by Kevin Mooney points out the political corruption with the DRBC’s proposed fracking ban and says “the jig is about up.” The column, using information provided by MDN friend Tom Shepstone, connects the dots between the Delaware Basin River Commission (DRBC), a quasi-governmental agency, and the anti-drilling non-profit Delaware Riverkeeper. Tom points out the DRBC “has stacked almost all its committees with representatives of the Delaware Riverkeeper, a special interest anti-gas advocacy group that sued it over gas drilling issues.”

Construction on what we believe to be the country’s largest natural gas-fired electric plant, the Guernsey Power Station (being built in Guernsey County, Ohio), is set to begin “immediately” according to the company hired to do the engineering, procurement and construction activities (EPC). Last week Caithness Energy, the project developer, announced it has closed on $1.6 billion worth of financing for the project and has given the green light to Gemma Power Systems to begin construction of the plant.

PA Gas-Fired Electric Going from 30% to 45% of Capacity Next 3 Yrs

    September 3, 2019September 3, 2019
    click for larger version

Believe it or not, dry and sterile reports from government agencies, like the “Electric Power Outlook for Pennsylvania” issued by the state Public Utility Commission, can be exciting! The latest edition of the EPO report predicts natural gas-fired electric generation in PA will go from a current 30% of all electricity produced in the state today, to 45% of all electricity produced in just three years–by 2023. That represents an enormous opportunity for drillers (and landowners) to sell locally produced gas to new, local customers.

FERC Approves Dominion Eastern Market Access Project for Startup

    September 3, 2019September 3, 2019

In October 2016, Dominion announced a new pipeline project called Eastern Market Access Project (see Dominion Announces $145M Project to Expand Gas Supply to DC & MD). The $145 million project was slated to beef up two compressor stations in Virginia, build a new compressor station in Maryland, and add a couple of pipeline taps near Washington, D.C. The new compressor station was eventually axed, and along with it some of the extra capacity. But Dominion completed the other work and last Friday the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) gave the OK to begin service.

FirstEnergy Runs Attack Ad, Claims China Controls OH NatGas Plants

    September 3, 2019April 20, 2022

“Bizarre” is the only word that comes to mind to describe a despicable, lowest-of-the-low, lying attack ad being run in Ohio by a front group for FirstEnergy meant to defend and preserve a horrible corporate welfare bailout law passed to prop up FirstEnergy’s economically dying nuclear (and coal) power plants. The $1 million ad campaign claims if the new law is repealed (a good chance of that happening), that somehow China will be in charge of the electric grid in Ohio. It is totally wackadoodle and an outright lie.
