NC Regulators File Objection to Williams PA Leidy South Pipeline

    September 6, 2019September 6, 2019

This story is befuddling–we’re still trying to wrap our heads around it. The North Carolina Utilities Commission has filed a protest with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) objecting to Williams’ Leidy South expansion project, a project that is being built 100% in Pennsylvania! Why are NC regulators objecting to work being done in another state 500 hundred miles away?

Virginia Approves Marcellus-Fired Power Plant Project Near Richmond

    September 6, 2019September 6, 2019

MDN first told you about plans to build the Chickahominy Power Station, a 1,650 megawatt state-of-the-art natural gas-fired power plant, in June 2018 (see Huge New Marcellus-Fired Power Plant Coming Near Richmond, VA). We’d not heard or read anything about the project since March of this year (see Marcellus-Fired Power Plant Project Near Richmond, VA Advances). However, there has been an important new development.

Nine Energy Trims Down, Sells Production Solutions Biz

    September 6, 2019September 6, 2019

Nine Energy Service, an oilfield services company that competes with companies like Halliburton and Baker Hughes, operates in a number of shale basins, including the Marcellus/Utica. Last October Nine bulked up by buying out Magnum Oil Tools, a “downhole technology” company (see Nine Energy Buying Magnum Oil Tools for $493M). Now Nine is slimming down by selling off its Production Solutions division (i.e. well services business) to Brigade Energy Services for $17 million. Along with the sale goes a reduction of 24% of Nine’s workforce.

FERC Chairman Says Agency Should Not Set Global Warming Policy

    September 6, 2019September 6, 2019
    FERC Chairman Neil Chatterjee

What a breath of fresh air is Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Neil Chatterjee. At an industry event earlier this week, Chatterjee told attendees that his agency should not unilaterally decide on the so-called impacts a given pipeline project may have on mythical man-made global warming. Instead, such a directive (to consider global warming impacts) should come from Congress via legislation. FERC can’t simply assume such authority. Finally! Someone who follows the rule of law.

Cunningham Energy to Drill More WV Shallow Horizontal Oil Wells

    September 5, 2019September 5, 2019

It’s been over a year since we brought you news about Cunningham Energy, a small oil driller based in West Virginia (see Cunningham Energy Focuses on Shallow Horizontal Oil Wells in WV). Cunningham, backed by money from Viper Capital Partners, is once again in the news. Viper has just acquired drilling leases (and conventional wells) in Roane and Gilmer counties in WV. Viper says its drilling arm, Cunningham, will drill more “shallow” horizontal (fracked) wells in those locations, looking for oil.

NY DEC Will “Fight” FERC over Constitution Pipeline Decision

    September 5, 2019September 5, 2019

You can’t say we didn’t see this one coming. Last week the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) ruled that the New York Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) took too long to deny a federal Clean Water Act “Section 401” water crossing permit for the Williams Constitution Pipeline project (see Victory! FERC Overrules NY DEC to Allow Constitution Pipeline). Meaning the project is now back on, approved by FERC itself. As we predicted, the DEC, thoroughly corrupted and politicized by Cuomo himself, says it will “fight” FERC’s ruling.

Delayed Michigan Gas-Fired Plant Finally Begins Construction

    September 5, 2019September 5, 2019

Nearly 20 years ago Indeck Energy floated a plan to build a an electric generating plant (powered by natural gas) in Niles, Michigan, not far from Chicago. In 2016 those plans got serious (see $1B Electric Plant Planned Near Chicago, M-U Connection?). In February 2018, Indeck said construction would begin in summer 2018–which never happened. Yesterday, Indeck finally held an official groundbreaking ceremony. The plant is now officially under construction.

KM Evacuates Elba Island LNG Ahead of Dorian, More Delays

Disappointingly, Kinder Morgan’s Elba Island LNG export facility is still not up and running. According to “frustrated” KM CEO Steve Kean, “We were making very good progress on Elba, and then Hurricane Dorian happened.” Sure, blame it on the hurricane. KM wisely evacuated personnel working on the Elba project to avoid Dorian–we have no issue with that. But let’s be honest, this project is WAY behind schedule, originally supposed to be online last year. And it’s one of the smaller LNG projects!

EQT Settles Lawsuit Against Former Rice Employee

    September 5, 2019September 5, 2019

In February, prior to the July takover by Toby and Derek Rice, EQT filed lawsuits in both Pennsylvania and federal courts against two former employees it had fired, claiming the employees, before they were fired, had systematically copied confidential information from company computers and took it with them when they left (see EQT Claims 2 Fired Workers Stole Confidential Information). In March, EQT alleged the employees “stole” the information to help the Rice boys in their bid to take over EQT via a proxy war (see EQT Accuses Fired Employees of Colluding with Rice Boys). EQT just settled/dropped one of the two cases.

Ohio has Money, Needs Contractors to Plug Orphan Wells

    September 5, 2019September 5, 2019

It’s time to help the orphans in Ohio–orphan wells, that is. Ohio has some 1,000 orphaned/abandoned oil and gas wells. In early 2018 Ohio passed a new law making more funds available to plug orphaned wells–important because drilling a horizontal shale well through an old conventional/orphaned well can result in a disaster. Although Ohio now has plenty of money to plug their orphaned wells, there’s a shortage of contractors to do the work.

In July the Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) granted an air permit for a compressor station in Weymouth (see Mass. DEP Issues Air Permit for Weymouth Compressor Station). The compressor station is the final component of the Spectra Energy/Enbridge Atlantic Bridge expansion project–a federal project overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Although MA issued the air permit (the main permit), there are several other state permits required, not yet issued.

Ohio Utica O&G Production in 2Q19: Oil Jumps 29%, Gas Up 11%

    September 4, 2019September 5, 2019

9/5/19 NOTE: ODNR’s original percentages were incorrectly calculated. A day after releasing the wrong numbers, ODNR fixed the wrong numbers in their 2Q19 update. Frankly, we should have noticed the original error, and didn’t. The raw production numbers were right there before our eyes, yet we simply relied on ODNR’s incorrect percentages and drew the wrong conclusions. See below for the corrected numbers.

Researchers Discover Low-Cost Way to Find New Shale Gas in PA

    September 4, 2019September 4, 2019
Penn State researchers mapped decline curve data on an interactive map (Credit: Penn State, click for larger version)

Penn State researchers say they’ve found a better, lower cost way to identify potential high yield areas for Marcellus Shale gas extraction. How? By using well production data taken from more than 5,600 existing wells, and only for wells with at least two years of production logs, the researchers created decline curves. They then extrapolated those curves to the entire PA Marcellus region and say they can predict, with a pretty high degree of accuracy, the amount of gas that would be extracted if a new well were drilled in a given location. How cool is that?!
