Elliot Group Breaks Ground on LNG Equipment Plant in Southwest PA

    December 4, 2019December 4, 2019

We’re always delighted to discover a new (for us) company involved in the supply chain–providing goods and/or services to the shale industry, including the downstream petrochemicals industry. Elliott Group is one of those companies not previously on our radar. Elliott’s U.S. headquarters is located in Westmoreland County, near Pittsburgh. The company designs, manufactures, and services turbomachinery, including centrifugal and axial compressors, steam turbines, and power recovery expanders. Elliott broke ground yesterday on a new facility in Jeannette where they will test their recently acquired product line of cryogenic pumps and expanders–equipment used in LNG plants.

10 Colleges in PA-OH-WV Form Program to Train Cracker/Mfg Workers

    December 4, 2019December 4, 2019

A group of 10 community colleges scattered throughout southwestern Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia have formed the Tristate Energy and Advanced Manufacturing Consortium, or TEAM, with the aim of training skilled workers for cracker plants and other petrochemical-related manufacturing operations. The cooperative has crafted a “stackable-credentials model” that offers “a career pathway from certifications to post-secondary degrees, up to and including a master’s degree.” Forwarding thinking!

WV I-68 Energy Corridor Extension Project “Creeping Along Slowly”

    December 4, 2019December 4, 2019

The Route 2 | I-68 Authority in West Virginia wants to expand Route 2 to four lanes from Parkersburg, WV to Chester, WV, and to extend Interstate 68 from I-79 near Morgantown, WV westward to WV Route 2 along the Ohio River Valley, some 73 miles (see WV Wants to Extend I-68 Another 73 Miles for Shale Industry). One of the reasons to build the $1 billion project? To handle more shale-related traffic. Here’s the latest…

Natural Gas Supply Association Goes Nuts, Supports Carbon Tax

    December 4, 2019December 4, 2019

What’s the clinical term for a person who intentionally wants to harm him or herself? Self harm? Self injury? Self flagellation? That’s what we call the situation at the NGSA (Natural Gas Supply Association) which yesterday said it supports an economy and shale-killing carbon tax “as a critical pathway to aggressively reducing carbon emissions.” Are they nuts? Have they lost their collective minds?!

Is NESE Pipeline to NYC Dead? Williams Withdraws Final NJ Permit

    December 3, 2019December 3, 2019

In October, MDN reported that Williams had temporarily withdrawn three of four applications with the New Jersey Dept. of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to build its Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline project to offshore Long Island (see Williams Withdraws NESE Pipe Permit in NJ, Resubmit Soon). In September NJDEP gave Williams an extra month with the permits (see Williams Gets Extra Month to Refile NESE Pipeline Permits in NJ). Williams said it would refile the three permits “in the next few days.” Never happened. Now the company has pulled the fourth NJ permit.

More Changes at Tallgrass Energy Following Founder’s Exit

    December 3, 2019December 3, 2019
Matt Sheehy, new President of Tallgrass Energy

Major changes continue at Tallgrass Energy, the owner/operator of the Rockies Express (REX) natgas pipeline that carries Marcellus/Utica gas to Midwest markets including the Chicago area. Last week we told you the founder/CEO of Tallgrass, David G. Dehaemers Jr., abruptly quit (see Tallgrass Energy Founder/CEO/Chairman David Dehaemers Quits). The company’s President and COO, Bill Moler, was elevated to CEO. Today Tallgrass named a new replacement in the role of President.

Nov. Cold Snap Prompts Switch from NatGas to Coal in NE, Midwest

    December 3, 2019December 3, 2019
    click for larger version

An interesting article from our favorite government agency, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, points out the price sensitivity for electric power generators and their willingness to switch, on a dime, from using one form of fossil fuel to another. A cold snap in November prompted more demand for natural gas from homes and businesses to use in heating, which in turn caused a bit of a supply deficit–meaning prices for natgas went up (double and triple in some cases). Lickety-split power generators in the northeast and Midwest who had been using natgas switched to using coal because of the price change.

NY Post: Andrew Cuomo Stands with America’s Energy Enemies

    December 3, 2019December 3, 2019

We know, we know! You’re tired of MDN hammering man-child Andrew Cuomo, the tinpot dictator who styles himself “governor” of New York State, over his role in blocking pipelines and causing a natgas shortage crisis in the greater New York City area. But stick with us. If you read MDN (and Tom Shepstone’s Natural Gas Now website) you will have read all of the arguments in a blow-the-doors off article appearing in the New York Post, written by Bob McManus, former editorial page editor for the Post.

IGU Report: 2019 was “Exceptional” for Natural Gas

    December 3, 2019December 3, 2019

The International Gas Union (IGU) recently released its Global Gas Report 2019 (full copy below). According to the report, “The past year has been exceptional for natural gas. Prices at key regional natural gas hubs have reached multi-year lows. Both natural gas production and consumption have grown at record rates. And international trade infrastructure – in the form of LNG and pipeline capacity – is growing at the fastest rate in a decade.” What else does the report say? Plenty…

Stop Press! Enbridge to Begin Construction on Weymouth Compressor

    December 2, 2019December 2, 2019

WOW, what a reversal of fortune! Barely a month ago MDN told you that two natural gas utility companies, National Grid and Eversource, had cut the legs out from under Enbridge by declaring they no longer need the Weymouth (Mass.) compressor station to supply them with incrementally more natural gas supplies for the Greater Boston area (see 2 Utilities Cut Enbridge Off at Knees re Mass. Compressor Station). The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Black Friday granted Enbridge a final go-ahead to begin construction anyway. Christmas came early!

FERC Authorizes Startup for Risberg PA-to-OH Pipeline

    December 2, 2019December 2, 2019

The Risberg Line, a 60-mile pipeline from Crawford County, PA to Erie County, PA and from there across the border into Ashtabula County, OH, began construction in February. Risberg cost roughly $86 million to build and will flow 55 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of gas from the PA Marcellus to the northern tip of Ohio in Ashtabula County. In mid-November, RH energytrans, the builder, asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for permission to start it up by Dec. 1 (see Risberg PA-to-OH Pipeline Project Ready to Start Dec. 1). FERC granted permission and as near as we can tell the pipeline is now up and running.

Cuomo Now Threatening to End Con Edison’s NatGas Franchise

    December 2, 2019December 2, 2019

When bullies get away with their bullying, as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has done with natural gas utility National Grid (see Andrew “Don Corleone” Cuomo Extorts National Grid, Wins Pipe Battle), they turn around look for more “marks” to bully. That’s how bullies behave. That’s how Cuomo is behaving since his big “win” in bullying National Grid to give up on its plan to get new gas supplies via pipeline. As we told you last week, sometimes the bad guys win. This is one of those times.
