OH Hickory Bend Processing Plant Dedication in Oct, Online in Dec

NiSource and Hilcorp Energy are building a natural gas processing plant in Springfield Township (Mahoning County), OH as part of a joint venture called Pennant Midstream. The Hickory Bend Processing Plant, as it’s called, will be dedicated on Oct. 28, although it won’t actually be up and running until sometime in December. The Hickory Bend project includes not only the processing plant (the first of a potential three processing plants), it also includes some 55 miles of wet gas gathering pipelines in eastern OH.

The initial investment in Hickory Bend by NiSource and Hilcorp is $375 million, but by the time it’s all done and dusted (in several years’ time with more processing plants), it could easily top $1 billion…

Seneca Resources Reports Production Up 35% Thanks to Marcellus

Seneca Resources, the drilling arm of National Fuel Gas Company, issued their fiscal 4th quarter (everyone else’s calendar 3rd quarter) operations update yesterday. Seneca is one of the major drillers in the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania. They report production for 4Q was up a very healthy 35% over the same period last year. They credit their Marcellus drilling program in Lycoming County, PA for that success.

Because of their success, Seneca has revised up their guidance (best guess) for how much natural gas they’ll produce this fiscal year–to 145-165 billion cubic feet (Bcf). The full report from Seneca, including initial production rates from some of their recently drilled wells…

60 Chesapeake OH Employees Getting Fired Just in Time for Xmas

Chesapeake Energy employees are still reeling from the announcement earlier this month that the company is firing an additional 800 employees company wide (see The Great Chesapeake Massacre: Lawler Fires 800 People in One Day). MDN speculates that Chessy may be for sale (see Chesapeake Energy Up for Sale? Maybe).

At the time of the mass(acre) firings we noted there were no firm numbers issued by Chesapeake as to how many of those lost jobs would be in the Marcellus/Utica region. We now have a bit more clarity on that. Chesapeake has filed paperwork with the federal government saying they will soon fire 60 people from their Uniontown, OH office–just in time for Christmas (Dec. 9)…

Devon Energy & Crosstex Energy Form New Midstream Company in JV

Devon Energy (driller with midstream assets) and Crosstex Energy (midstream company) announced today they are merging their midstream operations into a new company. The new midstream company, which will have assets in both the Marcellus and Utica Shale (as well as other shale basins) will be majority owned by Devon. In fact, the biggest customer for the new joint venture will be…Devon itself. The announcement says Devon will dedicate drilling from 800,000 of its leased acres to the new (and as yet unnamed) midstream company.

End of an Era? Sautner’s Dimock Home Leveled, Property Sold

It becomes harder and harder for mainstream media to keep the Dimock story alive. Dimock is a rural community in Susquehanna County, PA made famous by Josh Fox and his Gasland fictional movies. Without rehashing the entire story yet again, suffice it to say that nearby Marcellus drilling by Cabot Oil & Gas was said (by the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection) to have caused methane to migrate into some of the area’s water wells–especially around the Carter Road area.

The DEP ordered Cabot to install fixes on said wells and pay homeowners twice their property’s value, which they tried to do. Some of the families wouldn’t allow the fix and wouldn’t accept payment. Instead they sued, hoping for piles of money. One of those families was the Sautners…

Chesapeake Energy Up for Sale? Maybe

Is Chesapeake Energy for sale? MDN says you have to be a Dodo bird to ignore the signs. Activist investor (nee corporate raider) Carl Icahn has been the puppet master pulling the strings since he got a seat on the board of directors in June 2012, culminating in a jobs massacre two weeks ago (see The Great Chesapeake Massacre: Lawler Fires 800 People in One Day). Why do corporate raiders invest in companies? To slash employees, sell bits and pieces of the company off that are “unprofitable” and in general get it ready for sale–so the corporate raider can line his pockets when the stock price goes up. Selling companies is what they (disgustingly) do.

So you won’t be surprised that (a) Icahn has upped his investment in Chesapeake–he now owns 10% of the stock, and (b) the “Chessy is for sale” rumor mill has officially begun. The UK Daily Mail reports both BP and Shell could be looking at Chessy as a potential purchase…

Cabot Sells TX & OK Properties – Plows Proceeds into Marcellus

Cabot Oil & Gas is an amazing company. They (currently) drill in a single northeastern Pennsylvania county–Susquehanna County. And in that single county they have 8 of the top 10 producing Marcellus shale wells in the entire state (see PA’s Top 10 Marcellus Shale Wells – Full Details). Cabot produces an amazing 1 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas per day from their wells in Susquehanna County (see Who’s a Member of the Marcellus “1 Bcf/d” Club?). And get this, they can make money on selling their gas for as low as $1.20 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf). That has to rank them among the best-run, most efficient drillers in the world. No wonder the company, with just 1/10th of the revenues of Chesapeake Energy, is worth more than Chessy (see Corporate Hubris Humbles Chesapeake – Cabot Soars Sure & Steady).

So it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that Cabot has just sold off more (the rest of?) it’s oil and gas properties in West Texas and Oklahoma for $188 million and plans to invest that money in the Marcellus…

Anti-Drilling CA Group Assists Residents Near Halcon OH Drill Site

Yesterday MDN told you about Halcon Resources drilling another two wells at the Kibler site near Lordstown (Trumbull County), OH (see Halcon Drilling 2 More Wells Near Lordstown, OH). Seems there’s a bit more to the story than the neighbors being concerned about nighttime noise and lights. They’re also concerned about air quality, and residents of a nearby trailer park are working with an anti-drilling, anti-fossil fuel company from California called Global Community Monitor to do air quality sampling to ensure they aren’t breathing in dangerous levels of pollutants.

MDN asks: Why even bother with the pretense of testing? Global Community Monitor has already pre-determined what the outcome will be. Just announce the results now–that drilling anywhere at any time will kill the planet…

Lights Turned Off, Door Closed – Good Night, Norse Energy

It’s a sad day for New York landowners–for everyone really. Norse Energy has converted from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which means the courts protect you while you regroup, to Chapter 7, which means break it all up and sell off the pieces to the highest bidder. Norse has now literally, as well as figuratively, shut off the lights and closed the door behind them. The remaining eight employees of Norse have just been let go.

For years MDN has been writing about the plight of Norse and their inability to tap shale deposits under 130,000 acres of leased land in New York. The signs have been there for some time that Norse may face extinction if NY does not open up for shale drilling (see Norse Energy 2Q13: Concerned About Remaining ‘a Going Concern’). Thanks Gov. Andy! You sure know how to make NY “business friendly.” Norse announced the change to Chapter 7 last week in a very brief press release. Atlas Update: Finding Alternatives to Blue Racer Natrium Plant

Atlas Resource Partners (ARP), a driller working in several plays–including the Marcellus and the Utica–issued a financial and operations update yesterday. Included in the update are details of Atlas’ recent activities in the northeast–number of wells drilled, etc. Pretty standard stuff–the “normal” kind of periodic press release issued by drillers, except…

It’s interesting to MDN that in Atlas’ update they mention, rather prominently, the ongoing issue that Blue Racer Midstream’s Natrium processing plant has been shut down since an explosion and fire occurred on Sept. 21st (see Natrium, WV Fractionation Plant Still Closed After Explosion/Fire). The shut-down is having a significant negative affect on Atlas’ ability to get gas to market. So Atlas, like other drillers in the Ohio Valley area, is seeking alternative sources to process their gas. They’ve located a partial solution and continue to look.

Blue Racer has a growing problem on their hands with the continued shut-down of Natrium if their customers continue to find other solutions…

Rice Energy Rumored IPO – Dan Rice Gets Last Laugh

Looks like Dan Rice, who had been the single most successful mutual fund manager in the United States for the past decade until he was fired from BlackRock last year, will get the last laugh. As we told you in June 2012, Dan was upfront about investing in and founding a Marcellus/Utica shale drilling company for his boys to run–Rice Energy. Even though BlackRock knew about Rice Energy and seemingly didn’t have a problem with Dan’s side venture, they never told investors and so when “word got out” they fired Dan instead of fessing up to their own error (see BlackRock’s Screw-up with Dan Rice & Rice Energy). Dan was transparent about Rice Energy, BlackRock was not.

Reuters has learned that Dan and the boys are about to take the company public with an initial public offering (IPO). Antero Resources’ recent IPO shows the market is hungry for shale energy companies to go public (see Antero’s Stock Climbs 18% on First Day of Trading). The timing Rice’s IPO is impeccable. It’s thought that Rice Energy may be valued as high as $2.5 billion at IPO. Looks like Dan will be laughing (at BlackRock) all the way the bank…

Range Resources Nears 1 Bcf/d of Production in 3Q13

Range Resources announced today they are very close to joining the 1 Bcf/d (billion cubic feet per day) Club. Production of natural gas, gas liquids and crude reached an all-time high for Range in the third quarter–960 million cubic feet per day (Mmcf/d), which is a 21% increase from a year ago. Where is all that gas coming from? Mostly the Marcellus Shale.

Final Appeal? Court Says Drilling in Allegheny Natl Forest Legal

When the federal government digs in its heels and is intent on obstructing justice, it can take a long time to remedy via the courts. But (sometimes) justice does prevail in the end. We now have–hopefully–a final resolution in the ongoing series of cases known as Minard Run Oil v. United States Forest Service. We wrote about this case back in 2011, but it goes back much further, to 2009 (see Drillers Sue US Govt over Allegheny National Forest Delays). As a brief background, the federal government purchased a number of parcels of land in 1923 that became the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) in northwestern Pennsylvania. However, the government did not purchase the mineral rights under most of the land–seems that back in 1923 the government didn’t just print the money it wanted (“quantitative easing” anyone?).

Even though they don’t own the mineral rights, in 2009 the U.S. Forest Service (federal agency managing the ANF) entered into what was an illegal out of court settlement with environmentalist groups stipulating that the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) will govern all oil and gas drilling in the ANF. It effectively shut down any new drilling in the forest, denying private citizens the ability to benefit from their private property (mineral) rights. The drilling industry sued and the case has now gone through three appeals. The most recent appeal was heard by the federal U.S. Court of Appeals Third Circuit. The court ruled, once again, in favor of private property rights…

Halcon Drilling 2 More Wells Near Lordstown, OH

Lights! Action! Noise! … No, it’s not the set of a Hollywood movie, but the resumption of drilling at a Utica Shale well site near Lordstown (Trumbull County), OH. Halcon Resources drilled one well at the “Kibler” site earlier this year, and during the drilling, neighbors complained about the nighttime noise and lights. That first Kibler well was so successful for Halcon, they’re back to drill two more on the same pad. This time, however, they double-dog promise to reduce the noise and lights by erecting a sound barrier and using directed lighting.

Still, some of the neighbors are not impressed and say they’d feel better if Halcon just walked over and talked to them about their plans…
