NY Whistling Past the Graveyard by Blocking New Gas-Fired Plants

    November 21, 2024November 21, 2024

Living in New York State, as MDN editor Jim Willis does, is like watching a slow-motion train wreck. You can see it coming; you warn those nearby to get off the tracks and leave the area, but no one is listening. We’re talking about the coming brownouts and blackouts across the state (especially in New York City) due to the state’s climate policies blocking new natural gas-fired power plants. This past summer, Danskammer Energy, which operates a gas-fired peaker power plant along the Hudson River in Newburgh, NY, withdrew its request to expand the plant (see Danskammer Energy Gives Up Trying to Expand Gas-Fired Peaker in NY). Everyone—environmentalists and pro-gas advocates alike—is asking, Has New York built its last fossil fuel plant? It appears the answer is YES. Look for Increase in U.S. LNG Exports to Europe in Coming Weeks

    November 21, 2024November 21, 2024

Reuters predicts a sharp increase in U.S. LNG exports to European destinations “in the coming weeks.” Why? Because “the price spread between domestic natural gas and Europe’s main gas pricing hub hit one-year highs.” What the heck does that mean? We will explain it below. IPAA’s Plan to Make American Energy Great Again

    November 21, 2024November 21, 2024

We’ve brought you Harold Hamm’s top energy priorities for the incoming Trump administration (see Harold Hamm’s Oil & Gas Priorities for Trump’s Second Term) and the top five priorities from Jeff Eshelman, the president and CEO of the Independent Petroleum Association of America (see Top 5 Energy Issues for Trump-Vance to Tackle Starting Jan. 20). Although Eshelman’s list was personal (a blog post), the agency he leads, the IPAA, recently issued its proposed plan for “Making American Energy Great Again.” Whereas Eshelman’s list was brief, the IPPA plan is detailed (15 pages long) and does an excellent job of laying out the why as much as the what. NLPC: It’s Time to Fire ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods

    November 21, 2024November 21, 2024

ExxonMobil is the second-largest oil company (by market capitalization) in the world, second only to the Saudi-owned Saudi Aramco. Exxon is the definition of “Big Oil.” Unfortunately, Big Oil isn’t always a positive thing. Exxon CEO Darren Woods wants to keep American taxpayers locked into forking over trillions of dollars to other (corrupt) countries in the name of global warming, called the Paris Agreement. Darren Woods needs to go, and we’re not the only ones who think so. On November 14th, the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) sent a letter to ExxonMobil’s Board of Directors that called for the immediate firing of Darren Woods as CEO and Chairman of the Board. NLPC cites “misaligned priorities and an irrational emphasis on government subsidies” as their reasons. NLPC contends that Mr. Woods’s leadership and his role in pushing to stay in the Paris Agreement has jeopardized ExxonMobil’s profitability and core mission as a leading oil and gas company. UGI Sells Marcellus Gas-Fired Power Plant in NE Pa. to Castleton

    November 20, 2024November 20, 2024

UGI Corporation, a diversified energy company with midstream (pipeline) operations in the Marcellus and one of Pennsylvania’s largest utility companies, is selling its 169-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant near Wilkes-Barre, PA, to Castleton Commodities International for an undisclosed amount. The plant’s owner/seller is actually a wholly-owned subsidiary of UGI Corp. called UGI Energy Services. Read More “UGI Sells Marcellus Gas-Fired Power Plant in NE Pa. to Castleton”

NW Pa. Injection Well Leak Went Undiscovered for 109 Days

    November 20, 2024November 20, 2024

MDN is going to eat some crow with this story. In 2016, we called attention to efforts by neighbors (and anti-fossil fuelers) in Warren County, PA, in testing water sources near a wastewater injection well that had been operating since 2013 (see Concerned Citizens Test Water Near NWPA Injection Well, No Leaks). There had been no leaks from the Bear Lake Properties Bittinger #4 oil and gas wastewater injection well site in Columbus Township for (at that time) three years. We pointed out that injection well leaks are rare. However, there has been a leak at the Bittinger #4 well, and it was a doozy, traveling approximately 1,770 feet from the well site. That’s a full one-third of a mile. Not good. Even worse is that the company (due to an errant employee) failed to report the leak to the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) for 109 days. Read More “NW Pa. MPLX “Sweet Spot” is Processing M-U Rich Gas and Producing NGLs

    November 20, 2024November 20, 2024
    Greg Floerke

In late 2015, MPLX (i.e., Marathon Petroleum) bought out and merged with the Utica Shale’s premier midstream company, MarkWest Energy, for $15 billion (see MarkWest Energy Investors/Unitholders Approve Merger with Marathon). The “new” MarkWest, aka MPLX, plays on a much larger stage now, including ownership and operation of major assets in the Permian Basin and the Bakken Shale, in addition to the Marcellus/Utica. However, the company’s first love, Marcellus/Utica, still plays a starring role. Greg Floerke, the executive vice president and COO of MPLX, sat for an interview with Hart Energy editorial director Jordan Blum at the company’s recent DUG Appalachia event in Pittsburgh. PA DEP Claims Permit Backlog for O&G Now Completely Eliminated

    November 20, 2024November 20, 2024

Permitting in Pennsylvania overseen by the Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been a hot mess for years. A Chapter 102 Erosion and Sedimentation permit sometimes takes two, three, or even six months for approval — instead of the policy-mandated 14 days. According to a DEP press release from yesterday, that’s all behind us now. DEP Acting Secretary Jessica Shirley and Gov. Josh Shapiro said the agency has eliminated the backlog for oil and gas permits. Credit where credit is due. Read More “PA DEP Claims Permit Backlog for O&G Now Completely Eliminated”

Let’s Make CO2 Great Again: Making the Case for More, Not Less CO2

    November 20, 2024November 20, 2024

He’s also the author of “Inconvenient Facts: The Science That Al Gore Doesn’t Want You to Know” and “A Very Convenient Warming: How modest warming and more CO2 are benefiting humanity.” Writing on the American Greatness website, Greg has a fantastic column that makes a strong argument that the planet needs MORE carbon dioxide (CO2), not less. Did you know there is a benefit in having more CO2 and a warming of the earth? Forget the silly nightmare nonsense peddled by the left and open your mind to the reality that CO2 is a good thing, not a bad thing… Read More “Let’s Make CO2 Great Again: Making the Case for More, Not Less CO2”

Anti-Fossil Fuelers File Appeal Against Chesterfield Power Plant

    November 19, 2024November 19, 2024

Dominion Energy plans to build four small “peaker” electric generating plants in Chesterfield County, VA, near Richmond (see Dominion Plans to Build 1,000-MW Gas Peaker Plant Near Richmond, VA). The Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center (CERC) calls for building four 250-megawatt gas-fired power plants (1,000 MW total) that can jump into action during the coldest and hottest days of the year to help supply enough electricity for 250,000 homes—to keep the lights on because solar and wind are not up to the task. Even though these clean gas-fired plants will replace dirty coal-fired plants, anti-fossil fuelers, flying under the banner of Friends of Chesterfield, oppose the project. The group filed an appeal on Monday to the Chesterfield County Board of Zoning Appeals, challenging what they say is the county’s “inaction” to block the project. NET Power Update: 100% Clean NatGas Better Solution than Renewables

    November 19, 2024November 19, 2024

In December 2022, Rice Acquisition Corp II, a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) started by the Rice brothers (Danny, Toby, and Derek), announced a deal to acquire NET Power — an electric power developer with revolutionary new technology to capture every last molecule of carbon dioxide from natural gas-fired power plants (see Dan Rice Buys Co. that Builds Zero-Carbon Gas-Fired Electric Plants). The Rice deal to buy NET Power closed in June 2023, with Danny Rice (former CEO of Rice Energy) becoming the new CEO of NET Power (see NET Power Completes $1.5B Merger with Rice Acquisition Corp.). NET Power, now a publicly traded company, issued its third quarter 2024 update last week to inform investors of its progress. Penn State Says Bullying Companies to Reduce Emissions Works

    November 19, 2024November 19, 2024

Some interesting research coming from Penn State (and Binghamton University). A paper recently published in the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists found that companies contributing the greatest pollution and emissions were more committed to reducing pollution because they faced greater public scrutiny and risked being labeled as “greenwashers” — entities that make false claims about their environmental impact. In other words, public shaming and bullying (our words) make companies change their behavior. But there was another finding that equally intrigued us… Read More “Penn State Says Bullying Companies to Reduce Emissions Works”
