PA #1 Electricity Producer for Other States – Jeopardized by RGGI

    February 8, 2022February 8, 2022

According to numbers published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2020 Pennsylvania generated and sent more electricity to neighboring states than any other state in the union. More than 230 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity was generated in Pennsylvania during 2020, and nearly 78 million MWh of that electricity was delivered to neighboring states. If PA Gov. Wolf’s Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) carbon tax scheme is adopted, much of that electric production will disappear. PA’s neighbors should be VERY concerned.

Calcasieu Pass LNG Loads Inaugural Cargo; Sabine Pass LNG Expands

    February 8, 2022February 8, 2022

Venture Global LNG expects to load the inaugural cargo at its Calcasieu Pass LNG export facility in Louisiana on or after February 9. This is fantastic news! In addition, Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass export facility (a competitor with Calcasieu Pass) received FERC clearance to start commercial production on its sixth processing train. The best part for both bits of news? Marcellus/Utica molecules flow to Sabine Pass and either already do, or will flow to Calcasieu Pass in the future. New markets for our gas!

PA DEP Goes Rogue, Sues in State Court to Force Carbon Tax

    February 7, 2022February 7, 2022

The Pennsylvania State Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) has engaged in some questionable activities in the past, but this time they’ve stepped WAY across the line. Last Thursday the PA DEP filed a lawsuit in Commonwealth Court to force the state to adopt the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a blatant tax on carbon dioxide produced by gas- and coal-fired power plants. Thing is, it’s illegal for the state to adopt RGGI right now while the state legislature still has a window of time to vote on overriding Gov. Tom Wolf’s veto of a resolution that would have stopped RGGI. Constitutionally, legally, statutorily, the legislature has a certain number of days to attempt an override. The DEP’s Secretary Pat McDonnell, Gov. Wolf’s patsy, is trying to circumvent the law by forcing RGGI through now.

Mariner East 2 Pipeline Replaces Small Section, Antis Have a Cow

    February 7, 2022February 7, 2022
    smart pig

As part of the process of installing and commissioning a new pipeline, like the Mariner East 2 pipeline, the builder (Energy Transfer in this case) runs a “smart pig” (a pipeline inspection gauge) through the pipeline to ensure there are no defects or issues. ET’s smart pig detected a potential problem in a newly installed (not yet operational) segment in East Goshen Township in Chester County, PA. So ET alerted the local One-Call and then dug up the spot, replaced the pipe, and covered it up again, which only took a few days. Meanwhile, anti-fossil fuel fanatics went into hysteria mode when they learned of the fix.

Ohio’s Portion of Orphan Well Program $256M in Phase One

    February 7, 2022February 7, 2022

Part of the so-called Biden infrastructure bill (now a law) provides $4.7 billion to plug old abandoned and orphan oil and gas wells. We previously reported on initial payments from the program for both Pennsylvania and West Virginia. When we spotted an even higher number for Ohio’s portion of that program, we smelled that something is wrong, and indeed it is. We will explain below.

MPLX (MarkWest) Expands in Marcellus/Utica in 2022, New De-ethanizer

    February 7, 2022February 7, 2022

In late 2015 MPLX (i.e. Marathon Petroleum) bought out and merged in the Utica Shale’s premier midstream company, MarkWest Energy, for $15 billion (see MarkWest Energy Investors/Unitholders Approve Merger with Marathon). The “new” MarkWest, aka MPLX, plays on a much larger stage now, including ownership and operation of major assets in the Permian Basin and in the Bakken Shale, in addition to the Utica/Marcellus. Last week MPLX issued its fourth quarter and full-year 2021 update. Among the good news is that MPLX will increase spending in 2022, and some of the increase will go to projects in the M-U.

PA, OH, WV State Treasurers Ask Biden to Dump Anti-O&G Fed Nominee

Sarah Bloom Raskin – radical nominee to Fed

Joe Biden has nominated a D.C. swamp dweller by the name of Sarah Bloom Raskin to become the Fed’s (Federal Reserve) vice chair for supervision. Raskin is in favor of forcing banks to divest from fossil fuel companies. She’s a radical and the radical “progressive” Democrats (i.e. Communists) in D.C. all love her. That’s all you need to know about her unfitness for the position. Here’s one more thing to know: Every single oil and gas group, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the state treasurers for 24 states all oppose her being appointed to the Fed.

4th Circuit Throws Out Plan for Safer MVP Drilling re Candy Darter

    February 4, 2022February 4, 2022
    candy darter

Even when we’re joking about the leftist clown judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (i.e. the 4th Circus), we’re right! A few weeks ago we told you about the candy darter, a small fishie on the threatened and endangered species list that lives in a few creeks under which 303-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) wants to drill. While the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) both agree the candy darter would not be harmed by a change in drilling methods for MVP, the clown judges of the 4th Circus disagree and think THEY know more than the experts at both FERC and USFWS. (Of course they think they know it all–they read Dr. Seuss books as their guidance on environmental issues! This is not a joke.) Yesterday the judges tossed yet another permit for MVP.

EQT, Shell, Others Launch CCUS/Hydrogen Hub Initiative for OH-PA-WV

    February 4, 2022February 4, 2022

EQT, Equinor, Shell Polymers, U.S. Steel, and several other companies with either a base of operations or major interest in the Marcellus/Utica region, yesterday announced a new initiative to establish a carbon capture, utilization & storage (CCUS), as well as hydrogen production and utilization hub. A CCUS/H2 hub, if you will. While no specifics were announced, the aspiration seems to be establishing several facilities that capture, store or reuse carbon dioxide created during industrial activities, and figure out how to create more hydrogen (H2) and use it as a power source and (perhaps) as a raw input for manufactured products. Ultimately the aim of the group is to generate more business in the Appalachian region by committing to reduce CO2 emissions.

    Talen Energy Montour coal-fired plant

In November of 2020 MDN told you about a deal Talen Energy cut with the odious Sierra Club, signing a pledge to convert several coal-fired power plants to use natural gas in both Maryland and in Pennsylvania (see Talen Energy Dumping Coal, Converting Elec Plants to Gas in PA, MD). In return for converting the plants from coal to gas, the Clubbers promised to stop suing Talen (we’ll see how long that lasts!). Talen has made a little bit of progress with converting its Washingtonville (Montour County), PA plant.

UPenn: Carbon Capture for Gas-Fired Plants Can be Economical

    February 4, 2022February 4, 2022
Gas-Fired Allam Cycle Power Plant (credit: POWER magazine, click for larger version)

University of Pennsylvania researchers recently published a study that looks at how using existing methods of removing carbon dioxide from natural gas-fired power plants can be made economical to operate for large power plant operations. Coincidentally we also spotted news about a pilot project to develop new technology to do the same thing. Our conclusion: Despite the insistence of left-wing radicals that all gas-fired power plants are irredeemable and should be closed, reasonable and rational people are looking for ways to solve the problem of CO2 emissions. It is a solvable “problem”…

Class Action Certified Against Evolution Well for Commuter Wages

    February 4, 2022February 4, 2022

Evolution Well Services, headquartered in Houston with a regional office in Pittsburgh, specializes in “electric” fracking–using natural gas from the well pad (instead of diesel fuel) to power turbines to create electricity that drives fracking pumps. In September 2020, three former Evolution employees who worked at remote sites in the Marcellus/Utica for the company, filed a lawsuit against the company claiming Evolution failed to pay them for their commute to and from job sites. This past Tuesday a federal judge in Pennsylvania granted conditional certification for the lawsuit to become a class action.

Quebec Advances Bill to Seize and Block All O&G Work, Incl. Utica

    February 4, 2022February 4, 2022

Quebec, Canada is foolishly pushing forward with a total ban on all oil and gas drilling in the province. On Tuesday the province’s minister of energy and natural resources “tabled” Bill 21 which expropriates (seizes control of) all oil and gas wells and pulls back any previously issued permits to drill. Tabling in Canada means something different than it does here in the U.S.–it means to begin consideration. It’s the next step in finalizing a new law to ban oil and gas drilling in the province, including a ban on drilling in Quebec’s extensive Utica Shale.
