LNG Exports Play Starring Role in Current High Price of NatGas

    July 7, 2021July 7, 2021

The natural gas markets just made a bit of history. Friday, July 2nd, marked the last day in a series of nine days that the NYMEX futures price for natural gas increased from the previous day. Beginning Monday the price has slide down just a bit. Nine straight trading days of higher natgas prices is the longest period of day-over-day price rises in the past 20 years! The weather certainly had a lot to do with the increase in prices, but a key part, perhaps the starring role in why prices have continued to climb, is the role of LNG exports.

IEA Says World Demand for NatGas Fast-Growing – Up 3.6% This Yr

    July 7, 2021July 7, 2021

The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently humiliated itself and revealed it has been compromised when it issued a report in May that said the world should just quit drilling new oil and natural gas wells out of concern for mythical man-made global warming (see Intl Energy Agency Says World Should Stop All New O&G Development). IEA issued a new report yesterday, their 3Q21 Gas Market Report (full copy below). This new report forecasts a red hot increase in demand for natural gas worldwide this year–up 3.6%. That’s good, right? Not according to IEA which is cautioning the world’s desire for cheap, clean-burning natural gas endangers the planet. Yes, they’re still compromised.

Weekly Shale Drilling Permits for PA, OH, WV: Jun 28-Jul 4

    July 7, 2021July 7, 2021

All three Marcellus/Utica states received permits to drill new shale wells last week. Pennsylvania issued 12 new permits, 7 of them in the northeast PA dry gas region and 5 in the southwest wet gas region. Ohio issued 3 new permits, all of them for the same driller in Carroll County. (The Ohio driller is brand new!) And West Virginia issued 6 new permits with 5 of the 6 going to Antero Resources.

Minor Pipeline Leak at Cambridge, OH Injection Well

    July 6, 2021July 6, 2021

On June 24, the operator of the SOS D-2 injection well in Cambridge, Ohio (Guernsey County) reported a small release from a pipeline that transfers fluid from a storage tank to the injection well. The well’s owner/operator, Silcor Oilfield Services Inc., contained the leak. The Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) was alerted and is overseeing remediation of the affected area and repair of the line. End of story. Except…

Cimarex CEO Reworks $32M Stock Deal – Cabot Merger Still On

    July 6, 2021July 6, 2021
    Thomas Jorden

In May MDN told you about one of the oddest combinations in recent memory–the merger of Permian driller Cimarex Energy with Marcellus driller Cabot Oil & Gas (see HUGE NEWS: Permian Driller Cimarex Buying Out Cabot Oil & Gas). Given the negative reaction by stock analysts and investors, we had hoped maybe the deal would fall apart. Given the recent development that Cimarex CEO Thomas Jorden is potentially turning down $32 million in payouts from the deal (he’s staying on as CEO of the combined company), it sure seems like this deal is likely to happen.

EQT Launches $75M Fund to Investigate Hydrogen, CO2 Storage

    July 6, 2021July 6, 2021

Last week MDN told you that EQT Corporation, the largest natural gas driller in the U.S., had released its 2020 ESG report and announced the company would be “net carbon zero” by 2025 or sooner (see EQT Issues 2020 ESG Report, Claims Net Zero by 2025 “or Sooner”). In a follow-up conference call with analysts, EQT CEO Toby Rice announced he believes EQT could become THE lowest-cost producer of hydrogen in the U.S.–using EQT’s fracked natural gas, of course. In addition, when shale wells run dry, Rice plans to pump carbon dioxide down into the empty wells, something called carbon sequestration.

Oil Price Hits 6-Year High – OPEC+ in Crisis with No Agreement

    July 6, 2021July 6, 2021

The tinpot dictators who run the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus Russia (OPEC+) can’t agree on increasing overall production levels of oil. What a surprise. Meanwhile, America’s own shale frackers refuse to increase their own drilling to meet the increase in world demand, having been cowed by woke leftists into “behaving” themselves. And so the world’s oil production (not supplies, but actual production) continues to decline at a time when more oil is needed. Lack of supply is driving the price of oil higher.

Goldboro LNG FID Deadline Passes, Pieridae CFO Resigns

    July 6, 2021July 6, 2021

Pieridae Energy’s Goldboro LNG project, located in Nova Scotia (with the potential to export Marcellus/Utica molecules) has been on our radar for years. Nine years to be exact. In the middle of May, the company said a final investment decision (FID) would happen no later than June 30 (see Goldboro LNG Predicts FID Coming by June 30 – Some 9 Yrs Later). We now have the answer of sorts. The project will not go forward as planned. Instead, Pieridae says it’s going to rework the project to be “more compatible with the current environment.” Whatever that means.

It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s disconcerting. We’re talking about an “operational event” (i.e. outage) at not one but two MarkWest Energy natural gas processing plants–both in West Virginia. MarkWest’s Sherwood plant in Doddridge County and Mobley plant in Wetzel County are affected. According to NGI’s Daily Gas Price Index, four pipeline receipt locations affected by the outage are scheduled to go to zero beginning today “until further notice.”

Fossil Fuels Provided 79% of America’s Energy in 2020

    July 2, 2021July 2, 2021

Is our favorite government agency, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, being corrupted by the Biden White House? Maybe. The EIA published a post on their Today in Energy website yesterday to trumpet the fact that “nonfossil fuel sources” accounted for 21% of all energy consumed in the U.S. in 2020. The post should have had the headline that fossil energy provided 79% of all energy consumed in the U.S. last year. Yes, that was a new low for fossil energy (and a new high for nonfossil fuels) in the modern age, but not by much. We dug into the numbers and discovered a startling revelation: natural gas was the #1 source of energy consumed in the U.S. last year–even more than oil!

Analyzing the Supreme Court’s PennEast Pipeline v. NJ Decision

    July 2, 2021July 2, 2021

The Supreme Court decision from earlier this week allowing PennEast Pipeline to use the federally delegated power of eminent domain to cross tiny pieces of land owned (or controlled by) New Jersey is still reverberating across the country (see PennEast Pipeline Squeaks Out 5-4 Supreme Court Victory Over NJ). Antis were quick to dismiss the decision, saying it’s “not the final word” on whether the project will get built. They’re missing (or intentionally obfuscating) the point. We have two excellent analyses of the court’s decision and how it will affect not only the prospects for finishing PennEast, but the prospects for other (future) pipeline projects. We even have insight into how this decision affects projects other than pipelines.

PennEast Pipeline Still Faces Obstacles Before Building

    July 2, 2021July 2, 2021

As encouraging (indeed critical) as this week’s Supreme Court decision was and is for the PennEast Pipeline, a 120-mile 1.1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) pipeline from northeastern Pennsylvania to New Jersey, the court victory does not automatically mean the pipeline will get built. Not one square inch of pipe has been laid yet. What are the potential obstacles that could derail the project?

CNX Creates Nonprofit to Oversee $30M Community Fund

    July 2, 2021July 2, 2021

In April, CNX Resources Corp. announced instead of just blowing smoke about ESG (environmental, social, governance) with pretty slide shows and hoopla, they would donate $30 million to local, underserved communities and populations in the tri-state region (see CNX Investing $30M in Underprivileged Communities in Tri-state Area). Yesterday CNX announced the formation of a new nonprofit to oversee the distribution of that money–to make sure it really helps those who need it.
