    April 14, 2026April 14, 2026
Lee Shuman – Net Power CFO

Net Power, backed by the Rice brothers (of Rice Energy and EQT fame), is on a mission to develop and deploy technology to capture every carbon dioxide from natural gas-fired power plants. A year ago (April 2025), the company fired both its President and Chief Financial Officer (see Shakeup at Rice-Backed Net Power; President and CFO Both Out). CEO Danny Rice added both roles to his plate on a “temporary” basis. Temporary lasted a year. The company announced yesterday that it has finally appointed a new CFO. Big Green Attacks Pennsylvania Democrats Who Support Natural Gas

    April 14, 2026April 14, 2026

Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future is a 501(c)(4) advocacy group launched in August 2020 to promote natural gas as the best solution to support unreliable renewable energy and the best solution to lower greenhouse gas emissions. The companies behind Natural Allies include Marcellus/Utica heavy hitters, such as EQT, National Fuel Gas Company, Williams, Kinder Morgan, TC Energy, and Enbridge. A number of labor unions and gas groups are also financial backers of Natural Allies. The interesting thing about the group is that its leaders are liberal Democrats. The group exists to woo and attract other liberal Democrats in blue and purple states (like Pennsylvania) to support natural gas. Big Green is not happy with the effort. M-U Rigs Even @ 37; Haynesville Even @ 56; Nat’l Count Down 3 @ 545

    April 13, 2026April 13, 2026

Last week was status quo for the rig count. The Marcellus/Utica combined count maintained the same number of 37 active rigs, the third week in a row after Pennsylvania lost two rigs in March (see PA Loses 2 Rigs from Marcellus, Combined M-U Lowest Since Nov. 2025). The M-U’s chief competitor, the Haynesville, maintained its count of 56 active rigs, some 19 rigs more than the M-U. The national count lost three rigs last week and now operates 545 rigs. Repsol Wastewater Spill in Bradford County Draws DEP Violations

    April 13, 2026April 13, 2026
    Repsol spill

On March 24, Repsol Oil and Gas reported a wastewater spill at its Ugliuzza shale gas well pad in Bradford County, PA, initially estimated at 630 gallons but later revised to about 18,900 gallons. The release was traced to an improperly connected hose hanging over secondary containment, allowing wastewater to flow 1,143 feet through drainage features into Rockwell Creek. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) inspected the site on March 25 and cited multiple violations. Repsol and its contractor began recovery and containment efforts immediately, installing sumps and lining the basin. By April 6, the company reported recovering 166,729 gallons of contaminated fluid. Anderson County Settles Tax Break for Duke Energy Gas-Fired Plant

    April 13, 2026April 13, 2026

In March, South Carolina regulators approved Duke Energy’s proposal to build a 1.4-gigawatt (GW) natural gas-fired power plant in Anderson County, marking the utility’s first new generation project in the state in a decade (see SC PSC Approves Duke Energy 1.4-GW Gas-Fired Plant in Anderson Co.). Scheduled for construction in 2027 and operational by 2031, the facility aims to address surging energy demands driven by population growth and economic expansion, though critics (falsely) attribute the need primarily to AI-driven data centers. Anderson County Council voted in December to give the Duke project a tax break to ensure it is built in their county rather than elsewhere (see Anderson County, SC Offers Duke Energy Tax Break for Gas-Fired Plant). The Council voted to offer a “fee-in-lieu of taxes” agreement (FILOT, sometimes called a PILOT, or payment-in-lieu of taxes), although specifics were not determined at the time. The Real Reason PA Residents Pay More for Electric Than They Should

    April 13, 2026April 13, 2026

Despite being the nation’s leading electricity exporter and a top producer of natural gas, nuclear power, and coal, Pennsylvania residents pay significantly more for electricity — 45% more per kilowatt-hour than in 2018. Why? Sleazy politicians blame “greedy” utility companies and AI data centers, even though the rise in electric prices predates the current data center boom. If you dig just a little, you will find the real answer: it’s due to the policies put in place by the same sleazy (Democrat) politicians who blame others. Southwestern Energy Wins Major PA Case re Rule of Capture/Trespass

    April 10, 2026April 10, 2026

We believe this is the end of the legal road for the Briggs family’s lawsuit against Southwestern Energy (now part of Expand Energy) in a case that centers on whether hydraulic fracturing constitutes a trespass if it forces gas from a neighbor’s property, even if no fluid enters that neighbor’s specific property layer. In January 2020, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in favor of Southwestern, retaining the “rule of capture” in the Keystone State (see HUGE NEWS: PA Supreme Court Keeps ‘Rule of Capture’ for Fracking). In 2022, the Briggs family filed an amended complaint, call it “Briggs 2,” along the same lines, alleging that Southwestern’s drilling and fracking on a neighboring property had intruded (“trespassed”) under the property line, draining gas from the Briggs property and injecting PFAS “forever chemicals” under their land (see Briggs v SWN Rule of Capture/Trespass Court Case Resurrected). CNX Seeks Permit for Water from Beaver Run Reservoir for Fracking

    April 10, 2026April 10, 2026
    Beaver Run Reservoir (Credit: Wikipedia)

CNX Midstream has applied for a state permit to withdraw water from Westmoreland County’s Beaver Run Reservoir for horizontal drilling and Marcellus shale fracking. If approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the company would install a short floating intake and a 156-foot pipeline. Beaver Run, which serves nearly 123,000 people, is one of the region’s main water sources, and any withdrawal would require municipal authority approval and metering. Officials said reservoir levels are currently near capacity after recent rains. Read More “CNX Seeks Permit for Water from Beaver Run Reservoir for Fracking”

Devon-Coterra Merger Marks End of Shale 2.0, Start of Shale 3.0

    April 10, 2026April 10, 2026

On February 2, 2026, Devon Energy and Coterra Energy announced a landmark $58 billion all-stock merger, creating a “Super-Independent” energy producer targeting the AI-driven surge in power demand (see Devon Energy Buying Coterra Energy for $21.4B in All-Stock Merger). The deal combines Devon’s Permian Basin oil operations with Coterra’s dominance in the Marcellus Shale, yielding pro forma production of 1.6 million Boe/d (barrels of oil equivalent per day), including 4.3 Bcf/d (billion cubic feet per day) of natural gas. The merger strategically positions the new Devon to supply direct, fixed-price gas contracts to tech hyperscalers like Microsoft, Meta, and Google, signaling a historic convergence of the shale energy and artificial intelligence industries.
