    U.S. Rig Count Adds 1 @ 626, M-U Even @ 41 but PA Down 1, WV Up 1

    December 11, 2023December 11, 2023

The Baker Hughes U.S. rig count hit a new low for 2023 five weeks ago (see U.S. Rig Count Hits New 2023 Low – Loses 2 @ 616, M-U Even @ 40). Since then, the count has steadily added at least one rig each week and now stands at 626 active rigs as of Friday. The Marcellus/Utica stayed even at 41 active rigs last week. However, there was a change. Pennsylvania lost one rig, which West Virginia picked up.

NatGas-Powered WATT Fuel Cells HQ Staying in Westmoreland County

    December 11, 2023December 11, 2023
    WATT Fuel Cell

WATT Fuel Cell Corp. signed a seven-year extension of its lease to keep its headquarters in Westmoreland County, PA. WATT Fuel Cell manufactures Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (“SOFC”) stacks and systems that operate on common, readily available fuels such as natural gas and propane. Instead of burning and combusting natural gas (or propane), those fuel sources are subjected to an electrochemical process that produces electricity (see this MDN post for a description of the process: SWPA NatGas Fuel Cell Backed by EQT Wins Product Certification).

PA Sen. Yaw Calls for Refund of $2.5M Spent on Pitt Fracking Study

    December 11, 2023December 11, 2023

In August, University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) researchers released three studies commissioned by the State Dept. of Health supposedly investigating whether or not there is a connection between shale drilling and childhood diseases, including cancer (see Pitt Releases Fake Research, Claims PA Fracking Linked to Kid Cancer). From the beginning, when Pitt received $2.5 million with instructions to investigate a single cause (shale drilling), our position has been that this is not real science. Not when an abandoned uranium dump in the area (which there is) is ignored as a potential source. Not when other potential environmental factors are ignored. After combing through the studies, both Energy in Depth and the Marcellus Shale Coalition penned superb articles that destroyed Pitt’s so-called studies (see EID, MSC Destroy Pitt Fake Study Tying Fracking to Cancer in Kids). Pennsylvania State Senator Gene Yaw, Chairman of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, says Pennsylvania taxpayers deserve a refund from Pitt for producing sloppy research.

Amid COP28 Hoopla, M-U Already Leads World in Methane Reductions

    December 11, 2023December 11, 2023

With all of the posturing and hoopla happening at the 28th United Nations Climate Change (COP28) conference being held in Dubai, which mercifully ends tomorrow, let’s look at the facts. The windbags at COP28 have elected to make natural gas THE DEVIL at this year’s event. Fugitive methane (escaping into the atmosphere) is the big boogeyman that will toast Mom Earth into a cinder, so they say. The solution, according to flatulating windbags like U.S. Special Envoy John Kerry and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, is to outlaw fossil fuels (specifically natural gas). Yet here’s what the facts show: The Marcellus/Utica natural gas industry is already the world leader in lowering methane emission intensity, due to the implementation of best practices for years.

25 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Nov 27 – Dec 3

    December 8, 2023December 8, 2023

New shale permits issued for Nov 27 – Dec 3 in the Marcellus/Utica were much improved over the previous few weeks. There were 25 new permits issued last week versus 14 issued two weeks ago and just one new permit three weeks ago. So the trend is our friend! Last week’s permit tally included 15 new permits in Pennsylvania, 8 new permits in Ohio, and 2 new permits in West Virginia. Three companies tied for top place with 4 permits each: Seneca Resources in PA, Ascent Resources and Encino Energy in OH.

DUG Appalachia: Encino Looks to Grow Oil Production in OH Utica

    December 8, 2023December 8, 2023

Hart Energy keeps the hits rolling, publishing interviews and articles from the recent DUG Appalachia event held in Pittsburgh in November. The latest is a transcript of an interview between Hart Energy’s editorial director and Encino Energy’s CTO. According to the CTO, the company uses “machine learning” to perfect its oil drilling in the northern Ohio Utica, and it’s paying off. Encino is looking to expand in the Ohio Utica — looking to lease more and drill more.

DUG Appalachia: Diversified Buys, Optimizes, Holds for Long-Term

    December 8, 2023December 8, 2023

One of the speakers at the recent Hart Energy DUG Appalachia event in Pittsburgh was Douglas Kris, senior vice president of Diversified Energy. For years, we have highlighted Diversified’s “contrarian” business model (see our Diversified stories here). Diversified Energy (formerly Diversified Gas & Oil), with major assets in the Marcellus/Utica as well as other regions, owns approximately 8 million acres of leases with 67,000 (mostly) conventional oil and gas wells. The company’s business model is to buy lower-producing (older) wells on the cheap, find ways to make them more productive and keep them for decades to come. Kris further explained the company’s model and philosophy at DUG…

Venture Global LNG Fights Back, Says It Did Not Violate Contracts

    December 8, 2023December 8, 2023

Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass LNG export facility recently received Federal Energy Regulatory Committee (FERC) authorization to place the final three liquefaction blocks (7-9) into service (see Venture Global Gets FERC OK to Commission 3 Calcasieu Pass Trains). The other trains, 1-6, have been online for 18 months but are not officially in commercial service, even though the facility has shipped over 200 cargoes! Venture Global claims it’s still working out the kinks. Venture’s contracted customers are frustrated that they aren’t getting any shipments and have sued (see Repsol Joins Shell, BP in Suing Venture Global for Missed LNG). In recent interviews, Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel challenged those claims, stating the contracts don’t force him to sell to them. Talk about chutzpah!

U.S. Begins Winter with Most NatGas in Storage Since 2020

    December 8, 2023December 8, 2023
    Natural gas storage

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the best number crunchers in the business, working natural gas in storage in the Lower 48 United States ended the natural gas injection season at 3,776 billion cubic feet (Bcf). The Lower 48 entered the winter heating season, which runs from November 1–March 30, with the most natural gas in storage since 2020. This is yet another reason why we’re seeing low low low natural gas prices. Extra supply with the same (or less) demand equals lower prices. It’s Economics 101.

INGAA Files Lawsuit Challenging PHMSA’s New Pipeline Safety Regs

    December 8, 2023December 8, 2023

In May, the PHMSA issued a proposed new rule that would slap onerous and very expensive new requirements on pretty much all natural gas pipelines in the country, including 2.7 million miles of gas transmission, distribution, and gathering pipelines; 400+ underground natural gas storage facilities; and 165 liquefied natural gas facilities (see Biden DOT Issues New Partisan Methane Rules for All Gas Pipelines). The country’s top trade organizations representing the midstream (pipeline) industry filed comments pointing out major flaws in the new rule (see Major Pipeline Associations File Comments Against New PHMSA Regs). One of those organizations, the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA), filed a lawsuit earlier this week in federal court challenging the new rule.

Global Oil & Natural Gas Reserves Increase – Breakdown by Country

    December 8, 2023December 8, 2023

Each year, the Oil & Gas Journal updates oil and natural gas reserves by each O&G-producing country. It’s a fascinating look at where the biggest (and smallest) oil and gas supplies exist on the planet. Would it surprise you to learn that three other countries have more (far more) natural gas reserves than we have here in the U.S.? Perhaps even more startling, There are eight countries with more oil reserves than the U.S. Unfortunately, most of the countries with larger supplies are enemies of the U.S.

Constellation May Have to Close Boston LNG Import Terminal

    December 7, 2023December 8, 2023

NOTE: This post was updated on 12/8/23 with comments from Constellation. See below.

This past May, MDN told you about a coming real-life nightmare that the Everett LNG import terminal, which accepts and regasifies foreign-sourced natural gas, may shut down following the closure of New England’s biggest natural gas-fired power plant, the Mystic Generating Station in Everett, MA (see Nightmare in Boston – Everett LNG Import Terminal May Close 2024). The potential shuttering of the Everett LNG plant was the main topic of discussion a month later (in June) at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s second New England Winter Gas-Electric Forum in Portland, Maine (see Potential Shutdown of Boston LNG Terminal Discussed at FERC Forum). Then, in November, both FERC and NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) issued a joint statement about Everett LNG shutting down, warning of dire consequences for New England’s energy reliability and affordability if a shutdown happens (see FERC, NERC Warn of Dire Consequences if Boston LNG Terminal Closes). Until now, Everett shutting down has been a theoretical possibility. It’s edging closer to happening…

Skeptical PA Dems Turning Against Hydrogen Hubs & Blue Hydrogen

    December 7, 2023December 7, 2023
    click for larger version

Pennsylvania Democrats face a conundrum. They love getting other people’s money (i.e., “government” money). They love any energy source *other* than fossil fuels (they have an irrational and deep-seated hatred of fossil energy). They even love the idea of hydrogen as an alternative energy source. But they don’t know what to do with the coming hydrogen hubs. Their patron saint, Joe Biden, has promised billions in government (other people’s) money for two hydrogen hubs that will, at least peripherally, benefit Pennsylvania (see Hydrogen Hub Winners Announced – WV Takes Prize in M-U Region). Republicans love the coming hubs (see PA Republican Legislators “All-In” on Regional Hydrogen Hubs), which is enough to sour the Dems against them. Sad, isn’t it? Two key Democrat legislators, State Senator Katie Muth (D-Chester/Montgomery/Berks), chair of the Pennsylvania Senate Democratic Policy Committee, and State Senator Carolyn Comitta (D-Chester), Democratic Chair of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, co-hosted a public hearing on Monday on the proposed development of hydrogen infrastructure in Pennsylvania. It was pretty much a hate-fest against hydrogen.

PA DEP Spending $44M This Yr, $76M Next Yr to Plug Orphaned Wells

    December 7, 2023December 7, 2023

In May, MDN told you that since taking office in January, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has been a major dud — someone who doesn’t know how to lead (see Secretive PA Gov. Josh Shapiro a Major Dud Since Taking Office). He’s bereft of any idea of what to do and how to do it, especially with respect to energy issues. Since that time, our opinion has not changed. The state STILL does not have a fully completed budget for this year. Talk about a do-nothing leader! So we found it amusing to read the headline for Shapiro’s latest press release: “Governor Shapiro Gets Stuff Done: Shapiro Administration Plugs More Than 130 Orphaned & Abandoned Wells in Just 11 Months, Surpassing the Total Over the Previous Eight Years Combined.”
