Second Utica-Fired Power Plant for Facebook Nears Approval in Ohio

    September 17, 2025September 17, 2025

In early April, MDN brought you the exciting news that pipeline giant Williams, via its subsidiary, Will-Power, is planning to build two Utica/Marcellus gas-fired power plants in the New Albany International Business Park in Licking County, Ohio (see Williams Subsidiary Unveils Plans for Gas-Fired Power Plant in Ohio). The two projects are called the Socrates North and Socrates South power plants and will power a data center complex at that location. In early June, the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) authorized and approved construction for the Socrates South project (see OH Approves Williams Gas-Fired Plant to Power Facebook Data Center). Good news! The OPSB is now close to approving Socrates North. Read More “Second Utica-Fired Power Plant for Facebook Nears Approval in Ohio”

PA DEP Signals Air Plan Approval for $10B Homer City Power Plant

    September 17, 2025September 17, 2025

In April, Knighthead Capital Management, Homer City Redevelopment (HCR), and Kiewit Power Constructors Co. announced a plan to convert the former Homer City Generating Station, previously the largest coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania (Indiana County, 50 miles east of Pittsburgh) into a more than 3,200-acre natural gas-powered data center campus, designed to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (see Largest Gas-Fired Power Plant in the U.S. Coming in Western Pa.). The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said it is close to approving an air quality plan for the new facility. Cove Point LNG Offline for Annual Maintenance Until Mid-October

    September 17, 2025September 17, 2025

Each fall in the September/October timeframe, Cove Point LNG shuts down for a few weeks (typically around three weeks) for annual maintenance. That time has arrived. According to a notice posted on the Berkshire Hathaway Energy Informational Postings website, reductions in flows to the Cove Point facility will happen between Monday, September 15, and Friday, October 10 (a whole month). Having said that, feedgas flows will not be zero during all of that period, but will be significantly reduced. Read More “Cove Point LNG Offline for Annual Maintenance Until Mid-October”

New Group Forms in Virginia to Promote NatGas Industry Statewide

    September 17, 2025September 17, 2025

A new group, the Natural Gas Coalition of Virginia, launched yesterday to represent the state’s natural gas industry, including utilities, pipelines, distributors, and trade groups, emphasizing the role of natural gas in meeting Virginia’s growing energy needs safely, reliably, and affordably. The Coalition aims to provide decision-makers with trusted resources and insights, highlighting natural gas’s contribution to grid stability, economic development, and daily life. Natural gas now generates 55% of Virginia’s in-state electricity and has helped cut carbon emissions by half over 20 years. Founding members of the Coalition include major utilities, pipeline operators, and industry associations. Read More “New Group Forms in Virginia to Promote NatGas Industry Statewide”

PJM Revises Plan to Deal with AI Data Center Connection Requests

    September 17, 2025September 17, 2025

Last week, MDN told you that there was a disagreement brewing between those who operate the PJM Interconnection power grid and Big Tech, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and others, regarding the issue of adding data centers to the PJM grid (see Is PJM Giving Data Centers the Heisman with Connection Proposal?). PJM proposed a fast-track stakeholder process in August to develop rules by the end of the year for interconnecting data centers to its system while ensuring the region has enough power supplies. The draft proposal would treat new data centers over 50 megawatts (MW) as “non-capacity-backed load” (or NCBL). Under the proposal, PJM could curtail (reduce or cut off) power deliveries to data centers with NCBL status before the grid operator moves to pre-emergency load curtailments for other electricity users. Big Tech didn’t like it and made its displeasure known. PJM revised its initial draft and released a new version on Monday. The 105-Yr-Old Jones Act Strangles U.S. Energy; Time to Repeal It

    September 17, 2025September 17, 2025

We’ve railed against the Jones Act for years. The Jones Act, passed in 1920, requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be transported on ships that are built, owned, and operated by U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The problem is, big LNG tankers are all built, owned, and/or operated by foreign countries. You can’t fill up an LNG tanker in Sabine Pass or Cove Point and float it into Boston Harbor and unload it because the ship is not “U.S.-flagged.” It’s illegal under the Jones Act. We came close to repealing it during the first Trump administration, but ultimately failed (see Insider Bureaucrats Sunk LNG Jones Act Waivers During Trump Admin). We spotted a new column echoing our opposition to the Jones Act from the Cato Institute, saying the law is “strangling” U.S. energy, and it’s past time to repeal the law. AXPC Study Finds Independents Produce 90% of Onshore Natural Gas

    September 17, 2025September 17, 2025

The American Exploration & Production Council (AXPC) yesterday released a new study (full copy below) analyzing the upstream oil and natural gas sector’s profound impact on the U.S. economy. The study found that upstream, onshore independent producers supported 3.1 million jobs nationally, contributed to $277 billion in labor income, and paid $129 billion in taxes — accounting for 87% of the sector’s total economic contributions in 2024. As vital contributors to America’s energy security, independents accounted for over 85% of onshore crude and condensate production and over 90% of onshore gas production from 2022 to 2024. Range Leases Lycoming County-Owned Land for $5.4M + 2% Royalty

    September 16, 2025September 16, 2025

Following three years of negotiations, Lycoming County Commissioners celebrated closing a deal with Range Resources to lease 1,350 acres in Jackson Township for shale drilling. The county is receiving a $5.4 million signing bonus, which works out to $4,000 per acre. Sweet. However, the county will receive just a 2% royalty for any oil/gas produced from the property. You read that right (not a typo)—just 2%, which has to be the lowest royalty rate we’ve ever seen negotiated, either with a private landowner or a municipality. Potential Buyers Emerge for Antero Resources’ Ohio Utica Assets

    September 16, 2025September 16, 2025

Earlier this month, we brought you the bombshell news that Antero Resources, the country’s fifth-largest natural gas producer and largest producer in West Virginia, is preparing to market its Ohio Utica assets, hoping to fetch $900 million to $1 billion (see Rumor: Antero Preparing to Sell Ohio Utica Upstream, Midstream). The rumors keep coming that Antero’s 82,000 net acres in the Utica, as well as long-haul takeaway and supporting midstream assets, are catching the attention of several big M-U companies. Anti Group Claims Clock Ran Out for CNX to Drill 2 Penn Twp Wells

    September 16, 2025September 16, 2025

In June, we reported that the Pennsylvania Environmental Hearing Board (EHB), a special court in PA that hears appeals of decisions made by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), had ruled in favor of CNX Resources to allow two previously permitted wells in Penn Township (Westmoreland County) to move forward with construction (see Anti-Shale Group Loses EHB Appeal to Block CNX Wells in SWPA). A local anti-shale group called Protect PT, backed with Big Green money and lawyers, appealed the decision to the state’s Commonwealth Court. CNX has also appealed the EHB decision. While the lawsuit plays out, the original DEP permits in question have expired. Protect PT claims CNX will need to reapply all over again—that the clock has run out. PA DEP: Spill Cleanup at Eureka Williamsport Plant Nearly Complete

    September 16, 2025September 16, 2025

On August 17, Eureka Resources’ Williamsport Second Street facility (one of the three previously operated by Eureka) leaked some of its stored untreated wastewater, which ended up in the nearby Susquehanna River via a storm drain (see ‘Black Goop’ Spills into Susquehanna River from Closed Eureka Plant). Two weeks ago, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provided an update on the cleanup of the spill to say half of the leaked wastewater had already been recovered (see PA DEP Reports Half of Eureka 16,000 Gal. Wastewater Leak Recovered). We have a new update: nearly all of what spilled that can be gathered, has been collected. Read More “PA DEP: Spill Cleanup at Eureka Williamsport Plant Nearly Complete”

EQT’s Shift in Focus Back to LNG Came from Two Factors

    September 16, 2025September 16, 2025

EQT Corporation, at one time the largest natural gas producer in the U.S. (now #2 behind Expand Energy), recently signed its third deal to buy LNG from a Gulf Coast liquefaction plant, positioning the company as an LNG trader in addition to being the second largest natural gas producer in the country and a major midstream player (see EQT Signs Third Deal to *Buy* LNG – This One Commonwealth LNG). Not all that long ago, the company was focused on landing deals to provide its gas to regional power plants (see Toby Rice: Strong Power Demand Pleasantly Surprised EQT During 1H). So what changed the company’s focus back to LNG? Read More “EQT’s Shift in Focus Back to LNG Came from Two Factors”

French Investment Firm Sells SW Pa. Gas-Fired Power Plant for $1B

    September 16, 2025September 16, 2025

A power project we’ve been tracking since 2017 is a 620-megawatt (MW) Marcellus-fired electric plant in Greene County, PA, called the Hill Top Energy Center (see our stories here). In 2019, investment firm Ardian, based in Paris, France, announced that it had purchased a 41.9% stake in the project, becoming the majority owner (see SWPA Gas-fired Electric Plant Project Gets French Investment). In April of this year, Ardian announced it had purchased the other 58.1% stake it did not already own, becoming the sole owner (see French Investment Firm Buys Out SW Pa. Gas-Fired Power Plant). And now, Ardian has just sold it all to investment firm Blackstone Energy Transition Partners for nearly $1 billion. Read More “French Investment Firm Sells SW Pa. Gas-Fired Power Plant for $1B”

Former Driftwood LNG Plant Already 22% Built, On Track to Start 2029

    September 16, 2025September 16, 2025

MDN chronicled the rise and fall of Tellurian, founded by Charif Souki (who also founded Cheniere Energy), and Tellurian’s LNG export project, Driftwood. Tellurian’s primary focus was to build Driftwood LNG, a 27.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) facility that would cost $14.5 billion. Construction began on the project in March 2022, even without a final investment decision (see Tellurian Begins Construction of Driftwood LNG with No FID). The company spent more than $1 billion building Driftwood before all the wheels came off financially. In July 2024, Australian LNG giant Woodside announced a deal to buy Tellurian (and Driftwood) for $1.2 billion, renaming it Louisiana LNG (see Australia’s Woodside Buying Tellurian & Driftwood LNG for $1.2B). Woodside pulled the trigger on an FID earlier this year. Read More “Former Driftwood LNG Plant Already 22% Built, On Track to Start 2029”
