U.S. Big Oil is Head Over Heels in Love with LNG Trading

    September 22, 2025September 22, 2025

For years, Big Oil companies based in other countries have been in love with LNG trading, including BP (UK), Shell (UK), Total (France), and Eni (Italy). In fact, in February 2016, Shell completed a $69.7 billion buyout and merger with BG, the largest such oil and gas deal since Exxon bought Mobil in 1999, because of LNG (see LNG Love Story: Shell Makes Play to Buy BG in $69.7B Megamerger). BG Group was one of the biggest sellers and shippers of LNG in the world, making Shell THE biggest LNG trader in the world today, post-merger. More recently, American producers like EQT have begun preparing to enter the LNG trading world with multiple LNG deals (see EQT Signs Third Deal to *Buy* LNG – This One Commonwealth LNG). 26 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Sep 8 – 14

    September 19, 2025September 19, 2025

For the week of September 8 – 14, the number of permits issued to drill new wells in the Marcellus/Utica increased from the previous week. There were 26 new permits issued across the three M-U states last week, more than doubling the 11 issued two weeks ago. For the second week in a row, Pennsylvania’s permit take was pathetic. PA issued just two new permits last week, after issuing three two weeks ago. Expand Energy received one permit in Bradford County, and Coterra Energy received the other permit in Susquehanna County (both counties in northeastern PA). Pipeline Ruptured Near Gas Storage Well in Fayette County, PA

    September 19, 2025September 19, 2025
    crater created by pipeline rupture

On September 12, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was alerted to a pipeline rupture near a Berkshire Hathaway Eastern Gas Transmission & Storage natural gas injection well in Wharton Township, Fayette County (southwestern corner of the state). The incident occurred at the North Summit Gas Storage Area, approximately 150 feet from the R.E. Eberly UW-204 wellhead, within the boundaries of Forbes State Forest. The rupture resulted in the release of natural gas and brine, creating a crater down to the exposed and ruptured pipe. Read More “Pipeline Ruptured Near Gas Storage Well in Fayette County, PA”

Antis Challenge Gas-Fired Data Center Approval in Tucker County, WV

    September 19, 2025September 19, 2025

In April, MDN told you of a proposal by Fundamental Data for the “Ridgeline Facility,” a large natural gas power plant and data center that will be built between Davis and Thomas, WV (see 1,656 MW Gas-Fired Data Center Proposed in Tucker County, WV). At the time, we informed you that the power plant and data center would cover approximately 500 acres, with the gas-fired plant producing 1,656 megawatts (MW) of power. A story in May revealed that if the site is “fully realized,” it would be “among the largest data center campuses in the world,” spanning 10,000 acres (not 500) across Tucker and Grant counties (see Antis Target Gas-Fired Data Center Proposed for Tucker County, WV). The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WV-DEP) approved the project plan, including the gas-fired power plant. Big Green filed an appeal on Sept. 12. NY PSC Votes to Approve National Grid Gas Plan, Including NESE Pipe

    September 19, 2025September 19, 2025

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) met yesterday and voted to approve National Grid’s natural gas plan, which includes using more natural gas from the Williams Transco pipeline. While the PSC vote did not explicitly approve of the expansion of Transco, known as the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) project, the National Grid plan calls for increasing gas supply from Transco via NESE; therefore, the PSC implicitly approved the NESE project. It was an important signal from the Gov. Hochul administration that this project is going forward with the State of NY’s blessing. Antis are PO’d (personally offended) with Gov. Hochul. Major Marcellus Producer Adds 3 More Microturbines, Operates > 150

    September 19, 2025September 19, 2025

MDN has highlighted Capstone Turbine Corporation, a California company that manufactures small electric-generating plants that run on natural gas, several times in the past (see our Capstone stories here). Capstone, at some point, renamed itself. The company is now called Capstone Green Energy Holdings. (It’s practically a requirement that businesses in California must insert the word “green” into their names or risk being banned from the state.) Capstone announced it has secured a “follow-on order” from “one of the nation’s leading natural gas producers.” The order includes a pre-commissioned skid featuring three C65 microturbines and E-Finity’s m-TIM controller, slated for commissioning this October in the Marcellus Shale region. FERC Democrat Chairman Hits the Ground Running, Clears Old Cases

    September 19, 2025September 19, 2025
    David Rosner, current FERC Chairman

If Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman David Rosner, a Democrat appointed by Joe Biden (but whom Trump elevated to be temporary chairman), is trying to impress President Trump so he can keep the chairmanship, he’s doing a good job. At yesterday’s FERC monthly open meeting, Rosner and the two other current members (another Dem and a Republican) checked a bunch of to-dos off the list. One of Rosner’s focuses is to clear the decks of old FERC proceedings that have, in some cases, been tying up commission time and resources for years. MVP Urges Appeals Court to Revive Civil Lawsuit Against Protesters

    September 18, 2025September 18, 2025

We’re happy to see Mountain Valley Pipeline (now majority-owned by EQT) continues to vigorously pursue court action against so-called protesters who illegally blocked work during construction. These “protesters” (from out-of-state, possibly paid by Big Green groups to be there) thought they would skip out on taking responsibility for their actions. But MVP continues to hold their feet to the metaphorical legal fire, as well they should. MVP filed a civil lawsuit against four protesters for contributing to significant delays and costs. They must be held to account for their actions. On Tuesday, MVP asked an appeals court in West Virginia to reinstate its dismissed (on a technicality) civil case in county circuit court. WV DEP In-Person Hearing Today for Ammonia/Power Plant Project

    September 18, 2025September 18, 2025

In April 2023, MDN told you about the Adams Fork Energy project, a multi-billion-dollar clean ammonia production facility planned for Mingo County, WV (see CNX to Provide NatGas for WV Hydrogen Hub Clean Ammonia Plant). It was/is an anchor project in the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2), one of seven regional hydrogen hubs to be funded by Joe Biden’s Hunger Games hydrogen competition (see Reuters Reporting ARCH2 Hydrogen Hub Wins Funding in M-U Region). There is a WV DEP in-person hearing scheduled for this afternoon, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., for the project, but not for the ammonia plant. The project has grown from the original plans. Pitt/Duquesne Study Links EQT Frac-Out to Water Contamination

    September 18, 2025September 18, 2025

Recently, two neighboring towns in Greene County, PA, declared a Disaster Emergency related to a “frac-out” at the EQT Lumber well that happened three years ago, in July 2022 (see Freeport Twp (PA) Declares Disaster Emergency re EQT Frac-Out and Second PA Town Declares Disaster Emergency re EQT Frac-Out). Both towns, Freeport and Springhill, claim that they have residents whose water wells were contaminated (and therefore undrinkable) following the EQT frac-out event in 2022. Both say that making this official declaration will help them qualify for government funding to run a water line into the affected areas to deliver water. Actor Mark Ruffalo Rallies Against NY PSC Vote on NESE Pipeline

    September 18, 2025September 18, 2025

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) is meeting today and will vote on whether to approve National Grid’s natural gas plan, which includes using more natural gas from the Williams Transco pipeline. More gas would be delivered to National Grid via the proposed Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline project that will add a new 23-mile pipeline from the shore of New Jersey into (on the bottom of) the Raritan Bay, running parallel to the existing Transco pipeline before connecting to the Transco pipeline offshore from Long Island. The odious National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) convened a Zoom call featuring dingbat actor Mark Ruffalo to trash-talk the project ahead of the vote. EQT and Evolution Well Services Break New Performance Records

    September 18, 2025September 18, 2025

Evolution Well Services, headquartered in Houston with a regional office in Pittsburgh, specializes in electric fracking (“e-fracking”) — using natural gas from the well pad instead of diesel fuel to power turbines that create electricity to drive fracking pumps. It’s a much quieter, less-polluting version of fracking. EQT Corporation, the country’s second-largest natural gas producer, uses Evolution Well Services for much (all?) of its drilling. Evolution and EQT issued an announcement yesterday about a series of record-breaking achievements they’ve made in the Marcellus/Utica. FERC Kills Biden Effort to Change Gas Pipeline Review Policy

    September 18, 2025September 18, 2025

Under orders from the Biden White House in 2022, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Richard “Dick” Glick tried to permanently enshrine global warming considerations as a requirement to approve all new pipeline projects (see FERC Democrats Ram Thru Global Warming Policy for Pipe Decisions). Under extraordinary pressure from just about everyone (both Republicans and Democrats), a month later, he backed off (see FERC’s Glick Does “Abrupt About-Face” on New Global Warming Regs). However, FERC never officially rescinded that effort. Until now. Read More “FERC Kills Biden Effort to Change Gas Pipeline Review Policy”
