Baker Hughes U.S. Rig Count Gained 2 Rigs, Utica Gained 1 Last Wk

    September 15, 2025September 15, 2025

Finally, some good news to report on the U.S. and Marcellus/Utica rig count. Last week, the national rig count added two rigs after adding one the prior week, the first time we’ve added rigs for two weeks in a row since April of this year. We ended the week with 539 active rigs. In some even better news, the Utica Shale in Ohio added a rig last week, the first rig added to the M-U count since July 25. In fact, the combined count (37) has not been this high since May 23. Break out the party hats! Read More “Baker Hughes U.S. Rig Count Gained 2 Rigs, Utica Gained 1 Last Wk”

Huntley & Huntley CEO: Deep Utica Rivals the Best Marcellus Wells

    September 15, 2025September 15, 2025

Earlier this month, MDN told you that the “deep Utica” was a hot topic at the recent Hart Energy DUG Appalachia Conference held in Pittsburgh in late August (see Deep Utica Wells Outperforming Marcellus Wells on ROR, Production). Several speakers at the event talked up the deep Utica, saying Pennsylvania’s deep Utica wells are “smoking” the overlying Marcellus’ rates of returns and production per well. We have a deeper dive on the deep Utica to share… Read More “Huntley & Huntley CEO: Deep Utica Rivals the Best Marcellus Wells”

Eureka Proposes Plan to Clean Up, Close All 3 PA Wastewater Plants

    September 15, 2025September 15, 2025

On August 17, Eureka Resources’ Williamsport Second Street facility (one of the three previously operated by Eureka) leaked some of its stored untreated wastewater, which ended up in the nearby Susquehanna River via a storm drain (see ‘Black Goop’ Spills into Susquehanna River from Closed Eureka Plant). That event led to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection launching an investigation into all three of Eureka’s shuttered plants, two in Williamsport (Lycoming County), and one in Bradford County. The DEP found untreated wastewater stored at each facility—over 4.6 million gallons in total—and has demanded Eureka dispose of it within 90 days. EPA Proposes Ending Costly GHG Reporting, Saving $2.4 Billion

    September 15, 2025September 15, 2025

On Friday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed eliminating the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP), which mandates annual emissions reporting from over 8,000 facilities and suppliers. This move aims to save American businesses up to $2.4 billion in compliance costs. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin emphasized that the GHGRP, while established under the Clean Air Act, does not directly contribute to improving air quality or public health. The proposal aligns with President Trump’s executive orders and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which defers certain reporting obligations until 2034. The EPA will seek public comments before finalizing the rule. Read More “EPA Proposes Ending Costly GHG Reporting, Saving $2.4 Billion”

Roughnecks are Disappearing from the Oil Field, Replaced by Tech & AI

    September 15, 2025September 15, 2025

The oilfield is rapidly transforming as AI and automation replace many traditional roughneck roles, shifting work from mud-soaked rigs to remote data monitoring. So claims a new article appearing in Fortune magazine. Since 2014, the U.S. has lost 35% of its oil, gas, and mining jobs—about 270,000 positions—while companies like Chevron, BP, and ConocoPhillips remain profitable by cutting costs through technology. Autonomous drilling, AI-driven fracking, and data analytics enable longer wells, faster operations, and fewer rigs, thereby reducing labor needs. 11 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Sep 1 – 7

    September 12, 2025September 12, 2025

For the week of September 1 – 7, the number of permits issued to drill new wells in the Marcellus/Utica decreased from the previous week. There were 11 new permits issued across the three M-U states last week, down from 19 issued two weeks ago (and way down from 30 issued three weeks ago). Pennsylvania issued just three new permits, with one each going to Expand Energy, EQT Corporation, and Range Resources in Bradford, Greene, and Washington counties, respectively. Pipeline Work in Bradford County Leaks ~430 Barrels of Drilling Mud

    September 12, 2025September 12, 2025

On September 8, Blackhill Energy informed the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) of an “inadvertent return” that occurred during horizontal drilling for the Brad-Tenn Loop Pipeline in Granville Township, Bradford County. Blackhill reported that while drilling beneath Route 6 and Sugar Creek, they experienced a pressure issue. The company discovered that 18,000 gallons (approximately 430 barrels) of nontoxic bentonite drilling mud had been lost. The company stopped drilling ops at that point and reported it to the DEP. N.C. Pipeline Deathmatch: Transco SESE vs. MVP Southgate

    September 12, 2025September 12, 2025

Two pipeline kingpins are engaged in a deathmatch with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to get their competing pipeline projects approved. One is Williams’ Transco Southeast Supply Enhancement Project (SESE), the other is EQT’s MVP Southgate project. Both projects would be built in the same general area, starting at the same point near Chatham, Virginia, and ending near Eden, North Carolina. Both claim they have customers ready to take their gas. In a recent FERC filing, Williams said that its project could easily handle Southgate MVP’s capacity by adding meter tubes and regulation at an existing station (see Williams’ Transco Tries to Muscle Out MVP Southgate in FERC Filing). EQT was not pleased with the attempt to undercut Southgate. The question is whether this is a deathmatch with one winner taking all, or could both projects receive a FERC green light? Read More “N.C. WV Gov. Morrisey Plan for 50 GW of PowerGen by 2050 Takes Shape

    September 12, 2025September 12, 2025

Patrick Morrisey served as the 34th attorney general of West Virginia from 2013 to 2025. Last November, he was elected as the state’s 37th governor, assuming office in January. Morrisey has been an unabashed champion for fossil fuels since taking office. He’s a visionary, charting out the future of the state’s economy. Gov. Morrisey cast a vision for the future of the state earlier this month at the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Business Summit (see WV Gov. Morrisey Wants 50 GW of PowerGen in State by 2050). In broad brush strokes, Morrisey wants the state to grow its electric energy production from a current 16 gigawatts (GW) of generation to 50 GW by 2050, which he calls the “50 by ’50” plan. We have more details about what that plan entails. Read More “WV Gov. Morrisey Plan for 50 GW of PowerGen by 2050 Takes Shape”

Gov. Shapiro Calls NatGas “Environmentally Sustainable” at AI Conf

    September 12, 2025September 12, 2025

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was one of the speakers at yesterday’s AI Horizons Pittsburgh Summit in Pittsburgh. He was there speaking out of both sides of his mouth, as he so often does. Out of one side of his mouth, he claimed he wants PA to use “as much clean energy as possible,” meaning unreliable renewables. Out of the other side, he said converting old coal plants to use natural gas “is environmentally sustainable.” Yet he continues to seek to levy a carbon tax on natural gas-fired power plants via the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). NYMEX Gas Futures Price Closes Below $3 Once Again – Yuck

    September 12, 2025September 12, 2025

It finally happened. After the front-month NYMEX natural gas futures price closed above $3 on September 2, it once again sank below a $3 closing price at yesterday’s close. The price closed down 9.5 cents yesterday at $2.934 per million British thermal units (MMBtus). On the bright side, the price is still 8.8% higher than the lowest price (so far) in 2025, which was $2.696 hit on Monday, Aug. 25. Where do we go from here? And, is the futures price affecting regional spot prices in the Marcellus/Utica? Read More “NYMEX Gas Futures Price Closes Below $3 Once Again – Yuck”

DRBC Gives LNG Export Dock in Dela. River Extra 5 Yrs to Build

    September 11, 2025September 11, 2025

In September 2022, the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC), a dysfunctional, hot mess of an organization, voted to extend a permit to build the special LNG export dock along the shoreline of the Delaware River in New Jersey by an extra three years (see DRBC Gives LNG Export Dock in Dela. River Extra 3 Yrs to Build). That action sent the enviro-left, including THE Delaware Riverkeeper (Maya van Rossum), into apoplectic fits. Here we are three years later at the end of the extension, and in a surprise move, the five members of the DRBC voted unanimously to extend the deadline *another* five years! Once again, the left is sputtering. Read More “DRBC Gives LNG Export Dock in Dela. River Extra 5 Yrs to Build”
