Cecil, PA Residents Want Defacto Ban on New Drilling via Setbacks

    June 7, 2024June 7, 2024

Cecil Township in Washington County, PA, has seen a fair bit of Marcellus shale drilling over the years. The Board of Supervisors adopted a shale drilling ordinance back in 2011. They are considering an update. Unfortunately, the update they are considering is akin to jumping off a cliff. The town follows state guidelines that new shale wells must be drilled at least 500 feet from homes and 2,500 feet from schools and hospitals. The supervisors are seriously considering an amendment to raise the setback to 2,500 feet (half a mile!) from all structures. In other words, it would ban new drilling in 99% of the town.

Almost Done – EQT & Equitrans Shareholders Vote on Merger July 18

    June 7, 2024June 7, 2024

The merger of EQT Corporation and Equitrans Midstream into a single company took one giant leap forward in May when the Hart-Scott-Rodino (HSR) Antitrust Act waiting period expired and the federal government (by not objecting) blessed the re-union (see EQT Merger With Equitrans Clears Important Federal Antitrust Hurdle). One big hurdle remains. The shareholders of both companies must vote to approve the merger. According to an SEC filing by EQT earlier this week, the shareholders for both companies will vote on July 18.

Is Shell Ethane Cracker Plant an Economic Bust for Beaver County?

    June 7, 2024June 7, 2024

Patience is a rare commodity these days. We live in a day and age of instant gratification. Our food is made and delivered in minutes. The latest gizmo we want can be on our doorstep the next day (or, in some cases, the same day) from Amazon and any number of other retailers. Entertainment and distractions are everywhere! Just lift your eyes from your own phone and observe everyone else around you staring at their phones. So perhaps it is no surprise that some people feel lied to because the mighty Shell ethane cracker plant in Beaver County, PA, hasn’t instantly delivered the promised thousands of extra jobs and dozens of relocated companies.

Two days ago, MDN was the first to bring you the latest quarterly production numbers for Utica Shale gas and oil for the first quarter of this year (see Ohio Utica 1Q24 Numbers – Encino Dominates with 51% of Oil Prod.). The Business Journal in Youngstown covered the news yesterday by focusing on oil production in Columbiana County, in the northern part of the Utica. Columbiana’s oil production has increased dramatically over the past year.

Carbon Credit Scam with “High-Quality” Label Now on Sale

    June 7, 2024June 7, 2024

Last August, MDN told you about a new Cambridge University study published in the journal Science exposing the sale of carbon credits as a scam (see Cambridge Study Finds Carbon Offsets Using Trees is a Scam). After the carbon credit scam was exposed, big companies like Shell, Nestle, and Gucci exited the market — refusing to spend money on pretend solutions to global warming (see With Carbon Credits Scam Exposed, Big Names (Like Shell) Exit Market). How big of a scam is it? Try nearly $1 trillion a year (see Global Carbon Credit Market is $909 Billion Dollar Scam). But you know the left — they don’t give up. The latest tactic is to smear some new lipstick on the carbon credit scam pig by using the “high-integrity” label to make it look pretty.

Profits (Earnings) for Most M-U Drillers Plunged in First Quarter

    June 6, 2024June 6, 2024

While oil-focused and large diversified drillers in the U.S. made healthy profits during the first quarter of this year (January through March), such was not the case for natural gas-focused drillers. RBN Energy tracks 43 exploration and production (E&P) companies that are publicly traded and reports of those 43 that the 16 oil-focused and 15 diversified E&Ps were solidly profitable in 1Q24, earning $20.65/boe (barrels of oil equivalent) and $18.49/boe, respectively. However, the 12 gas-focused E&Ps were “under siege,” posting a loss of $1.65/boe.

CNX Gets “Radically Transparent” in Corporate Sustainability Rpt

    June 6, 2024June 6, 2024

Last November, CNX Resources CEO Nick Deiuliis signed a voluntary deal with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro to expand drilling setbacks and several other regulatory steps not mandated for shale drillers under PA law (see CNX Signs Deal with PA Gov. to Increase Setbacks, Other Changes). Deiuliis and Shapiro held a news conference to make the announcement at a CNX well pad in Washington County, PA. At that event, Deiuliis said his company is committed to “radical transparency” to enhance public trust and improve operations. Since that time, CNX has used the phrase radical transparency to describe its ESG (environment, social, governance) activities. Yesterday, CNX released its thirteenth annual Corporate Sustainability Report, appropriately titled Radical Transparency.

Martins Ferry Council Pressures ODNR to Clean Up AMS Facility…NOW

    June 6, 2024June 6, 2024

We have been tracking and reporting on the drama surrounding Austin Master Services (AMS), a radiological waste management solutions company in Martins Ferry (Belmont County), Ohio, located close to the Ohio River (see our AMS stories here). Two weeks ago, a Belmont County Common Pleas Court judge ordered AMS to be fined $200 per day for failing to meet its permitted requirements for the amount of frack drill cuttings and other frack waste products housed at the Martins Ferry site. However, paperwork filed with the court by AMS claims the company is out of money, deep in debt, and is “effectively a dead company” that will not be able to meet the court’s order … unless it gets sold (quickly) to someone else who can do the cleanup work (see Austin Master Services Claims It is “Effectively a Dead Company”). The problem is that nothing is getting done to clean up the mess left by AMS, and the city of Martins Ferry is not happy with the stalemate.

Post-Gazette Lib Editors Embrace Lithium from Frack Wastewater

    June 6, 2024June 6, 2024

Every now and again, the liberal Democrat editors of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette publish an unsigned editorial (from the editors) that surprises us. Yesterday was another such instance when Post-Gazette editors said Pennsylvania should leverage frack wastewater to extract lithium, which can be used to make electric vehicle batteries for Joementia’s EV fantasies. The editors cited a study recently published (in April) by the National Energy Technology Laboratory that says Marcellus wastewater in Pennsylvania alone has enough lithium to provide 40% of the country’s needs (see Mainstream Media 5 Years Late Reporting Lithium-from-Shale Story).

Dominion Drops RGGI Fee Added to Customer Bills in Virginia

    June 6, 2024June 6, 2024

In 2021, as he was running for Governor in Virginia, Glenn Youngkin pledged that if he won, he would remove the state from the onerous carbon tax on coal- and gas-fired power plants called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Youngkin kept his promise, although it took longer than he had hoped (and is still being challenged in court). In addition to not paying as much for electricity post-RGGI, ratepayers just got another gift: Dominion Energy, the primary utility company servicing Virginia, is dropping an average fee of $4.50 per month from the utility bills of Virginia residents.

44 Senators, 138 House Mbrs Intro Resolution to Block EPA Power Reg

    June 6, 2024June 6, 2024

The Bidenistas at the EPA attacked coal and gas-fired power plants in April, threatening to destabilize the existing electric power grid with new regulations (see EPA Rolls Out Final Regs Attacking Coal & Gas-Fired Power). Using 1,020 pages of new regulations, which will go into effect this year, all coal-fired plants that are slated to remain operational in the long term and all new gas-fired power plants will be required to control (capture) 90% of their carbon emissions using expensive and unproven technology. Translation: New gas-fired plants won’t get built, and most, if not all, coal plants will shutter, with the result that electricity will, by necessity, be rationed (see WSJ Calls Biden EPA Power Plant Regs a Plan to “Ration Electricity”). A number of lawsuits have been filed against the new regulation. Now, members of Congress are adding their voices, intending to block the new reg using a Congressional Joint Resolution. The resolution was simultaneously introduced yesterday in the Senate and House.

POLITICO Energy Summit – Libs Petrified Trump Will Take Ax to IRA

    June 6, 2024June 6, 2024

Liberals are so funny to watch. Their own words condemn them. For example, the far-left-leaning POLITICO “news” organization held an Energy Summit yesterday. It was a virtual event, as far as we can tell. One of the big discussion topics was Biden’s “signature” climate law, the misnamed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), made possible by a single vote from Joe Manchin. The IRA is better named the Green New Deal. It’s an abysmal law that targets fossil fuel energy for extinction. Judging from the comments made at the Summit, the libs are clearly worried that if Donald Trump wins, he will take an ax to the IRA (as he should).

Ohio Utica 1Q24 Numbers – Encino Dominates with 51% of Oil Prod.

    June 5, 2024June 5, 2024

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) released production numbers for the first quarter 2024 yesterday. Oil production, led by Encino Energy wells, is the headline news. Oil production from Encino represented 51.3% of all Ohio Utica oil production in 1Q. Ascent Resources was the next closest oil producer, with 21.8% of Utica oil produced. As for natural gas, Ascent Resources dominated with 42.8% of all Ohio Utica natgas production. In the number two slot was Gulfport Energy with 17.6% of natgas production, followed closely by Encino with 16.0% of natgas production. Below, we have lists of the top 25 gas and oil wells by production in 1Q24, along with charts showing gas and oil production by both drillers and by county. You’ll only find this news (and this level of detail) here on MDN.

MVP Sues 4 Out-of-State Protesters Who Blocked Access to Work Sites

    June 5, 2024June 5, 2024

Four out-of-state pipeline protesters (two from New Jersey, one each from Vermont and Maryland), all senior citizens who thought it was cutesy to block access to work sites for the almost-done Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), are about to learn a hard lesson. They have been sued by MVP for BIG BUCKS — for the costs to compensate for lost time AND for punitive damages. We’ll see if the protesters’ Big Green benefactors will pony up the lawyers and money they need to fight the lawsuits. It’s about time our side begins to play hardball. You play hardball by suing these crazies and making them pay. Kudos to MVP.
