Weather Causes NYMEX NatGas Price to Soar, M-U Spot Prices Soar Too

    January 13, 2025January 13, 2025

The prices natural gas is selling for, both the NYMEX futures price and the spot price at various trading hubs, continue to climb. Last Friday, the NYMEX “front month” futures contract (based on gas flows at the Henry Hub in Southern Louisiana) traded above $4/MMBtu for some of the day, but ultimately closed at $3.989, up 28.8 cents day/day. Just a little over a penny away from $4! That’s the highest closing price in two years. The physical spot price of gas trading at large northeastern cities, like Boston and New York, soared. Even the price for pipeline gas in places like northeastern and southwestern Pennsylvania hit highs not seen in nearly one year. Leftists Eye Pa. Law in War Against Fossil Fuel Companies

    January 13, 2025January 13, 2025

We’ve read a number of articles warning the radical left is gearing up to launch a blizzard of lawsuits (i.e., lawfare) against the incoming Trump administration—particularly related to environmental and energy policies and regulations. It’s standard operating procedure for the left, which has taken to bastardizing our justice system in recent years. While the left often dreams about putting its political opponents in jail, not much has been done along those lines (see NYC Dem Politicians, Radical Groups Seek to Jail Big Oil Execs). So it was particularly chilling to read a PBS story about a new journal article in which leftist lawyers seriously discuss using a Pennsylvania law already on the books to prosecute oil and gas companies for the “crime” of causing mythical global warming. This is no longer wishful thinking but the left outlining tactics they intend to deploy to jail those who refuse to agree with them. Read More “Leftists Eye Pa. Biden Treasury Dept. Ruins 45V “Clean” Hydrogen Tax Credit

    January 13, 2025January 13, 2025

On Jan. 3, the Biden IRS issued its final clean hydrogen tax credit rule, otherwise known as the 45V Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit. We previously wrote about 45V back in June (see Biden IRS 45V Tax Rule Endangers Hydrogen Hub Projects in M-U). Our take back then has not changed with the release of the final rule. The 45V tax credit, part of the misnamed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), can only be used if the hydrogen produced is “green” — meaning NOT made from natural gas. In addition, the electricity used to produce the hydrogen can’t come from fossil fuel sources like natural gas (if you want the tax credit). From what we can tell, nothing changed between then and now, other than allowing coal-mine methane to qualify for the higher tax credit. Read More “Biden Treasury Dept. Court Rulings & Regs Cause Delays in New LNG Export Plants

    January 13, 2025January 13, 2025

RBN Energy recently concluded a two-part series on LNG delays and what’s causing delays in bringing more export capacity online. Friday’s Part 2 of the series looks at recent court rulings and regulatory issues and their impact on U.S. LNG development. Yes, Joe Biden’s ill-timed “pause” on the Department of Energy issuing new export approvals certainly had a big impact (see White House Makes it Official – Biden Declares War on LNG Exports). But, there were other regulatory and court-related issues in 2024 that also had an impact on the slowdown in new LNG exports. Read More “Court Rulings & Regs Cause Delays in New LNG Export Plants”

The Legal Case Against NY Law Taxing O&G $75B for Global Warming

    January 13, 2025January 13, 2025

Not only did New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, an extremist liberal, sign a ban on using carbon dioxide to frack wells in the state at the last minute before the end of the current legislative session (see New York Has Fallen: Gov. Hochul Signs CO2 Frack Ban Into Law), she followed it up by signing into law a new climate bill forcing fossil fuel companies to pay $75 billion in “recovery” assessments over the next 25 years for their alleged role in causing “extreme weather” (see NY Gov. Hochul Goes Nuts: Signs Law Billing O&G Companies $75B). A Forbes article discusses how the NY law is completely unconstitutional and illegal. Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG Ships First Cargo to Germany

    January 13, 2025January 13, 2025

At the end of December, Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG export facility officially shipped its first cargo…to Germany. Unfortunately for Venture Global’s contracted customers, they will have to wait to receive their legally contracted shipments. Venture Global has admitted it will (as it has with the its Calcasieu Pass facility) pretend the Plaquemines LNG is not “commercially ready,” allowing the company to cream the market and make more money for the first couple of years (see Plaquemines LNG Coming Online, Will Hose Customers for 2 Years). It’s a disgusting business practice. Read More “Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG Ships First Cargo to Germany”

MVP Flows Full 2 Bcf/d for First Time Since Starting Last June

    January 10, 2025January 10, 2025

On June 14, 2024, the 303-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) that runs from Wetzel County, WV, to Pittsylvania County, VA, announced the pipeline had, after a decade of planning and building, finally begun to flow Marcellus/Utica molecules (see Confirmed: M-U Gas Now Flowing Through Mountain Valley Pipeline). The effect of the molecules flowing through MVP was profound and immediate, raising prices for M-U gas at the source and lowering the gas price at the destination (see MVP Lowers Gas Prices in Southeast, Raises Prices in Northeast). However, in the first month that the pipeline was online, it only flowed about half of its rated 2 Bcf/d capacity. Since then, other pipelines connecting to and taking gas from MVP have come online, gradually boosting flows on MVP. Here’s some exciting new news: Just this week, for the very first time, MVP flowed a full 2 Bcf/d (technically 1.96 Bcf/d) of yummy Marcellus/Utica gas. Are U-Turn Wells the Future of Drilling in the Marcellus/Utica?

    January 10, 2025January 10, 2025

We never cease to marvel at the genius of the oil and gas industry and those who seek to find better ways to drill. According to an Oil and Gas Investor article examining major shale play trends, drillers across the Lower 48 are drilling U-shaped double-long laterals, finding lower-cost new-well inventory in the acreage they already hold. And they’re doing it “problem-free.” Did you know there are two U-shaped wells in our region? There’s one in the Pennsylvania Marcellus (in Susquehanna County) and one in the Ohio Utica (Belmont County). Who knew?! Read More “Are U-Turn Wells the Future of Drilling in the Marcellus/Utica?”

ARCH2 Hydrogen Hub Open House Brings Out Anti-Fossil Fuelers

    January 10, 2025January 10, 2025

Last August, MDN told you that the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) officially received its first $30 million from the Bidenistas (see EQT & Others Enter “Phase 1” of Hydrogen Hub; DOE Cuts $30M Check). ARCH2 is getting $925 million from a $7 billion pot. ARCH2, one of seven projects to win approval, was selected specifically because it will use Marcellus/Utica shale gas as the feedstock to create hydrogen (so-called “blue” hydrogen). At an open house yesterday in Ohio, anti-shale protesters showed up to register their discontent with “clean” hydrogen because it will “perpetuate fracking.” We wonder how it feels never to have graduated from kindergarten. New Bill in Congress Would Block Presidents from Banning Fracking

    January 10, 2025January 10, 2025

Last Friday, Republican Congressman August Pfluger (from Texas) introduced a new bill that will prevent any future president from banning fracking nationally without the consent of Congress. Pfluger’s “Protecting American Energy Production Act” would explicitly require an act of Congress to impose a fracking moratorium and prevent the president from doing so directly. We must ensure future administrations don’t repeat the catastrophic damage inflicted by the Bidenistas over the past four years. This is a good first step. World’s Largest Investment Firm, BlackRock, Dumps Net-Zero Club

    January 10, 2025January 10, 2025

Elections certainly do “have consequences,” as Lord Obama once famously said. Less than two months after Donald J. Trump won the election and Republicans won both houses of Congress, the six largest banks in the U.S. all withdrew their membership in the United Nations Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), with the largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, leaving earlier this week (see Largest Bank in U.S. Drops Out of UN’s Net Zero Banking Alliance). And now, wonder of wonders! The investment equivalent of Darth Vader, BlackRock, with some $9 trillion of investments under management, announced that it is pulling out of the investment banking equivalent of NZBA, something called the Net Zero Asset Managers (NZAM) initiative. Translation: It’s OK to invest in fossil energy once again. At least here in the good old US of A. Read More “World’s Largest Investment Firm, BlackRock, Dumps Net-Zero Club”

What May Be Ahead for M-U in 2025 & 2026: More Pipes, More M&A

    January 9, 2025January 9, 2025

The end of the year and the beginning of a new year are times when many publications reflect on what was and what may be. A recent article by Hart Energy’s Oil and Gas Investor magazine tackled the topic of what may lie ahead for the Marcellus/Utica region over the next couple of years. The article looked at two primary issues—the potential for more pipelines getting built within (and out of) our region and the likelihood of more mergers and acquisitions for drillers in our region. 5 PUCO Commissioners to Decide the Future of Data Centers in Ohio

    January 9, 2025January 9, 2025

Last fall, MDN began tracking the issue of who, ultimately, should pay to build out new electricity sources for data centers (and AI) that increasingly use huge amounts of power (see Big Tech and Big Utility Tangle in Ohio re Data Center Electricity and Big Tech Not Happy with OH Utility Counterproposal re Data Centers). A large utility company in central Ohio, AEP Ohio, is tangling with Big Tech companies, including Amazon, Google, and others, about the commitments those companies should make before it (AEP) will risk investing billions in bringing new power facilities (natgas, solar, wind, nukes, whatever) online. The battle lines are drawn. Each side made a proposal to the state Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO). Now, the five PUCO commissioners will sort through the proposals and pick a side.
