Manchin Permitting Bill Takes One Small Step, Remains Stalled

    August 23, 2024August 23, 2024

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia (aka Traitor Joe) spoke to the Pittsburgh Business Times Wednesday afternoon about a bill he and Republican Sen. John Barrasso (from Wyoming) recently introduced, the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 (see Barrasso, Manchin Release Bipartisan Energy Permitting Reform Bill). Manchin told PBT reporter Paul Gough he thinks it’s likely to get a vote on the measure by both the Senate and House by the end of this year. We want to drink some of the same funny juice Manchin is drinking.

Enbridge CEO Says AI Power Use “Colossal,” U.S. LNG Doubles by 2030

    August 23, 2024August 23, 2024
    Enbridge CEO Greg Ebel

When we say “major pipeline company with major assets in the Marcellus/Utica,” which companies do you immediately think of? Williams? Kinder Morgan? Energy Transfer? TC Energy? All good answers. But there’s another name that should be on the list: Enbridge. Through acquisitions and its own projects, the Canada-based Enbridge has become a huge and important player across the entire U.S., but in particular in the M-U region. When the CEO of Enbridge opines on the state of energy and natural gas (as he recently did), we need to listen.

Rhode Island Gives LNG Plant Another 5 Years, Won’t Make Permanent

    August 23, 2024August 23, 2024

In 2019, the Rhode Island Energy Facility Siting Board waived a licensing requirement for a “temporary” LNG storage facility in Portsmouth to prevent another gas outage episode from happening again (see With “Backs Against Wall” Rhode Island Approves LNG Facility). Board members complained they had no choice, that “we have our backs against the wall” and “people’s lives could be in danger” if they didn’t approve the LNG facility. The “temporary” facility has remained operating since that time. Earlier this year, Rhode Island Energy submitted a proposal to make the facility permanent instead of an ongoing temporary installation. State regulators ruled this week. They refused to make the LNG facility permanent. Instead, they opted to grant the facility a five-year license.

ARCH2 Hydrogen Hub Gets an Official Headquarters in Morgantown, WV

    August 22, 2024August 22, 2024

Earlier this month, MDN told you that the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) has officially received its first $30 million from the Bidenistas (see EQT & Others Enter “Phase 1” of Hydrogen Hub; DOE Cuts $30M Check). ARCH2 is getting $925 million from a $7 billion pot created by the Bidenistas. ARCH2, one of seven projects to win approval, was selected specifically because it will use Marcellus/Utica shale gas as the feedstock to create hydrogen. From the beginning, the ARCH2 initiative was led by West Virginia, so it was fitting that yesterday, at the official kickoff, a ribbon was cut on the official project office for the project, located at the West Virginia University (WVU) Innovation Corp. center in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Competing Studies Say NatGas Pipes Can/Can’t Be Used for Hydrogen

    August 22, 2024August 22, 2024

With all of the hoopla at yesterday’s ribbon cutting in Morgantown, WV, for the new Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) headquarters, we thought it appropriate to share a couple of studies analyzing whether and how existing natural gas infrastructure (pipelines) and appliances (furnaces and stoves) can use the hydrogen that will get produced by ARCH2. Three weeks ago, we noticed a study published by U.K. utility company National Gas that announced results from an experiment it had conducted that showed its pipeline system could be converted to flow 100% pure hydrogen, which was a shocker for us. Then, last week, a U.S. study was published, largely led by members of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), that reports the opposite — using existing natgas pipelines to flow 100% pure hydrogen is “mostly unusable” and won’t work. Which study is right? Because they both can’t be right.

Dominion Officially Changes Location of Chesterfield Peaker Plant

    August 22, 2024August 22, 2024

Dominion Energy plans to build four small “peaker” electric generating plants in Chesterfield County, VA, near Richmond (see Dominion Plans to Build 1,000-MW Gas Peaker Plant Near Richmond, VA). The Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center (CERC) calls for building four 250-megawatt gas-fired power plants (1,000 MW total) that can jump into action during the coldest and hottest days of the year to help supply enough electricity for 250,000 homes. In early June, we told you that Dominion is actively looking at changing the location of the proposed project to locate the peakers at an existing power-generating site where two gas-fired plants now operate (see Dominion Plan to Move Location of 4 Va. Gas-Fired Peakers Advances). Chesterfield County blessed the change in location in July (see Va. County OKs Dominion Plan to Change Location of Peaker Plant). Dominion just made the change in location official. Read More “Dominion Officially Changes Location of Chesterfield Peaker Plant”

5 Mo. After NY Legislature Passed CO2 Frack Ban, Gov Has Not Signed

    August 22, 2024August 22, 2024

Five months ago, the New York Senate passed a bill already passed by the Assembly to ban the use of carbon dioxide in shale drilling (so-called “CO2 fracking”). Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul, a reliable anti-fossil fueler, has still not signed the bill into law. What the heck is going on? A small group (seven, by our count) of environmentalist wackos turned up outside the main gate at the just-opened New York State Fair in Syracuse yesterday to hold signs and protest to remind Hochul she needs to do their bidding. RIP Bill Siderewicz – Builder of 2 Huge Gas-Fired Plants in OH

    August 22, 2024November 24, 2025
    Bill Siderewicz

Some sad news to share. The man most responsible for bringing two power plants to Lordstown (Trumbull County, OH) has died. According to his obituary, Bill Siderewicz passed away on Tuesday, August 13. He was 74 and lived in Massachusetts. He died way too young. Bill was the owner of Clean Energy Future, which built a power plant fueled by natural gas on Route 45 in Lordstown. He sold the plant to ArcLight Capital earlier this year (see Clean Energy Future Sells Lordstown Power Plant to ArcLight Capital). Bill was in the process of building a second plant (see Trumbull Energy Center Secures Financing, Construction Begins ASAP). After Doc Review, Customers Asks FERC to Deny CP LNG Extra Time

    August 22, 2024August 22, 2024

Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass LNG export facility received Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) authorization to place the final three liquefaction blocks (7-9) into service in November 2023 (see Venture Global Gets FERC OK to Commission 3 Calcasieu Pass Trains). The other trains, 1-6, have been online for over two years. However, the entire facility is not officially in commercial service, even though it has shipped over 200 cargoes! Venture Global claims it’s still working out the kinks. After reviewing confidential commissioning documents, Venture Global’s customers have asked FERC to deny a requested one-year time extension before the plant is fully commissioned. Binghamton Univ. Study Says Drillers Bully Landowners to Sign Leases

    August 21, 2024August 21, 2024

A study led by Binghamton University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) claims it has uncovered that energy companies pressure landowners into allowing hydraulic fracturing (fracking) on their properties, “often resorting to persistent and personalized tactics.” In other words, those nasty frackers bully poor landowners into signing leases. We have no doubt there are landmen who twist arms a little too tightly, but this study has a few flaws in our humble opinion. Read More “Binghamton Univ. Upstate NY Bitcoin Miner Sues DEC to Keep Plant Operating

    August 21, 2024August 21, 2024

New York State has become the North Korea of the United States. It is narrow and parochial and devoid of freedom. If you operate a business in New York and you are not in a protected or favored class, or if your business does not bribe someone in the Democrat Party, you are in danger of losing that business. New York is aggressively hostile to any business remotely connected to fossil fuels. A “bitcoin miner” operating in beautiful Upstate NY, near the shore of Seneca Lake, uses a clean-burning (very small) natural gas power plant to power its 15,300 computer servers. The radical Democrats running the state, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, want it shut down and gone. Last October, NY antis were close to achieving their objective. But what’s this? The bitcoin miner is hanging tough and challenging the state in court. The facility is still online!

Georgia PSC Approves 3 New Gas-Fired Power Plants Near Atlanta

    August 21, 2024August 21, 2024

Yesterday, the Georgia Public Service Commission voted 5-0 to approve Georgia Power Co.’s plan to expand an existing power plant, called Plant Yates, by installing three new gas-fired units. Plant Yates is located on approximately 2,400 acres on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River in Coweta County, Georgia, southwest of Atlanta. Plant Yates originally operated seven coal-fired steam-generating units. Five of the units were retired in 2015 and the two largest units were converted from coal to natural gas and currently operate as a natural gas electric generation plant. Gas Peaker Planned for Madisonville, KY to Aid Unreliable Renewables

    August 21, 2024August 21, 2024

We have news of a second southern gas-fired power plant to share today. This one is tiny, a 75-megawatt peaker plant in Madisonville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Municipal Energy Agency (KYMEA) and the City of Madisonville recently announced the development of the KYMEA Energy Center I, a natural gas electric generating facility. The new facility, with four reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) generators, will be able to start up at a moment’s notice. The raison d’etre for the facility? To supplement unreliable renewable energy that can’t meet sudden increases in demand for electricity. Read More “Gas Peaker Planned for Madisonville, KY to Aid Unreliable Renewables”

Pipelines to the Rescue! Delivering M-U Gas to Va. & Carolinas

    August 21, 2024August 21, 2024

Recently, we’ve told you about the coming demand for natural gas to generate electricity that data centers and artificial intelligence will need (see Big Midstream Companies Eye Data Center/AI Market for New Pipes). The left’s answer for increased power demand is to kill new data centers and ban AI (see Leftists Argue for Ban on AI Because It Uses Too Much Electricity). Here in the real world, more electricity will soon be needed in Virginia and the Carolinas for a plethora of new projects in the works. Two pipelines that flow Marcellus/Utica molecules are working hard to meet the need: Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), now owned by EQT, and Transco (Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line), owned by Williams.
