CNX Unveils NatGas-Centered “Appalachia First” Vision for the Future

    December 12, 2022December 12, 2022

CNX Resources President and CEO Nick DeIuliis has done it again. This morning CNX launched “Appalachia First,” the company’s vision for the future which draws on CNX’s regional leadership, core operational strengths, and an innovative business model. What is Appalachia First? In a nutshell, the strategy as outlined by CNX is to extract and KEEPING/USING natural gas right in our own region, making the Marcellus/Utica (i.e. Appalachia) the economic and jobs hub of the entire country. It’s brilliant!

Marcellus Industry Wants Biden EPA to Modify Onerous Reg

    December 12, 2022December 12, 2022

The Bidenistas waited until the UN’s 2022 Climate Change Conference, called COP 27, was up and running (in Egypt) before going to Egypt in November to announce their latest attack on the oil and natural gas industry. At COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it is “strengthening its proposed standards to cut methane and other harmful air pollution” in the oil and gas industry. In other words, yet another massive power grab in attempting to regulate oil and gas at the federal level, instead allowing O&G to be regulated at the Constitutionally-designated state level. The Marcellus industry in Pennsylvania is hoping it can work with the EPA to blunt the onerous rule they know is coming. Good luck with that.

US NatGas Production Sets All-Time High Monthly Record in 2022

    December 12, 2022December 12, 2022

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), U.S. dry natural gas production increased during 2022 and averaged more than 100 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in both October and November–exceeding pre-pandemic monthly production records from 2019. EIA forecasts that U.S. production of dry natural gas will average about 100.0 Bcf/d from December through March, down slightly (about 0.5 Bcf/d) from November, but still at record-high levels.

Senate Democrats Attack Big Oil Again, Propose Huge New Taxes

    December 12, 2022December 12, 2022

What can we say? Once again, the Democrat Party is trying to demonize fossil fuels and is going after “Big Oil,” proposing insanely high new taxes on a handful of oil companies because, for a single year (2022), they have actually made some money. All money and profits belong to the government in the left’s twisted worldview. A cabal of seven Senators led by Sen. Robert Menendez from New Jersey has launched this latest attack against our industry.

Is So-Called “Peak Oil” (Finally) Almost Here? No, Not Even Close

    December 12, 2022December 12, 2022

We’ve heard the peak oil theory peddled countless times since we began publishing Marcellus Drilling News in January 2009. Every single time predictions that the world (or the U.S.) has reached its limit and will now begin using less oil have been astoundingly wrong. Yet every few months, you’ll read another “expert” or guru announce this it…we’ve finally reached peak oil. Have we? NO. Not even close. When will we? We’ve got an answer.

Finally! Ohio Joins Effort to Locate Hydrogen Hub in West Virginia

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

Since the so-called Biden infrastructure bill became law late last year with $8 billion earmarked for so-called clean hydrogen hubs to be funded around the country, we’ve made the strong and loud point that unless the Marcellus/Utica states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia join forces and submit a joint proposal to site one of the 6-10 regional hubs here, we risk losing out to other regional coalitions. It seems someone is finally listening. Until now, each M-U state has proffered its own plan/application for a hydrogen hub (see WV, OH, PA Compete Against Each Other to Attract $2B Hydrogen Hub). According to a press release issued yesterday, Ohio has decided to throw its weight behind a proposal for the hub submitted by West Virginia.

Why are Hydrogen Hubs, like the ARCH2 Proposal, a Big Deal?

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

As we highlight in today’s lead story, Ohio has thrown its support behind the ARCH2 (Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub) application to site a regional hydrogen hub in West Virginia (see Finally! Ohio Joins Effort to Locate Hydrogen Hub in West Virginia). We have taken various stabs at explaining hydrogen energy and how hydrogen hubs work. However, Pittsburgh Business Times ace reporter Paul Gough has done a masterful job of writing an “explainer” article (with graphics) that outlines the role hydrogen hubs will (if built) play in our energy future.

PA PUC Cuts $48K Refund Check for Mariner East Pipeline Penalty

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

In March, MDN told you that the Deputy Chief Administrative Law Judge of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) issued a ruling against the now completed Mariner East 2 pipeline project, assessing a $51,000 fine on the project for work done near an apartment complex (see PA PUC Judge Fines Mariner East Pipe $51K for Work Near Apt Bldg). In June, the full PUC voted to accept and enforce the $51,000 fine recommended by the PUC judge (see PA PUC Upholds ME Pipe Fine of $51K for Work Near Apartment Bldg). Two months later (in August), the PUC voted to reverse its own decision, lowering the fine from $51,000 to $3,000 (see PA PUC Reduces ME Pipe Fine to $3K for Work Near Apartment Bldg). However, that wasn’t the end of the story…

OH Senate Passes Bill to Expand Shale Drilling on State-Owned Land

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

Two days ago, MDN told you about Ohio House Bill (HB) 507, a “poultry” bill that (at the last minute) was amended by the Ohio Senate to redesignate natural gas as a “green” energy source and also a measure expanding drilling on and under state-owned land (see Ohio Senate Bill Would Expand Shale Drilling on State-Owned Land). And just like that, the Ohio Senate voted to approve the bill as amended. Which has the lefties at the Cleveland Plain Dealer really steamed…an extra bonus in our book!

Williams, Coterra, Dominion Partner on Certified Low-Emission Gas

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

It appears that Williams (pipeline company) and Coterra Energy (driller), along with end-customer Dominion Energy (local gas utility) have developed their own “responsible gas” certification scheme apart from the three such schemes widely used by many Marcellus/Utica drillers currently. In an announcement yesterday, Williams said the deal struck with Coterra and Dominion establishes “the industry’s first next generation natural gas certification process across all segments of the value chain from production through gathering and transmission with deliveries through 2023.”

Republicans Push Back Against Endangered Species Status for Bats

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

On Wednesday, Congressional House Committee on Natural Resources Ranking Member Bruce Westerman (Republican from Arkansas) and U.S. Reps. Tom Tiffany (Republican from Wisconsin) and Pete Stauber (Republican from Minnesota) sent a letter signed by 24 House members to both the House and Senate Appropriations (i.e. spending money) committees. The letter requests that any year-end funding package prohibits federal funding for the listing of the northern long-eared bat as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

WoodMac Report: 5 Reasons to be Cheerful for Fossil Energy

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

It’s been a tough year for many people–for just about every human on planet earth. Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and the fallout with Europe cutting back on purchases of Russian oil and natural gas have rippled across the planet, causing high energy prices and a recession. Energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie (WoodMac) has put together analysis in a new report that looks for the proverbial silver lining in all the bad news. WoodMac has appropriately named this report, “The Silver Linings Playbook.” In it (full copy below), WoodMac lists five key developments that, despite the setbacks of the past year, are “laying the foundations for the delivery of more reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.” Interestingly, all five of the developments deal with using more fossil energy.

21 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Nov 28-Dec 4

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

Last week (Nov. 28-Dec. 4), the number of permits issued to drill new shale wells rose slightly to 21 from the prior week’s 17. The big surprise is why. Pennsylvania only handed out five new permits. Ohio issued even fewer–just three. It was West Virginia with 12 new permits that saved the day.

DRBC Adopts Meaningless Prohibition on Shale Wastewater Disposal

    December 8, 2022December 8, 2022
DRBC Iron Curtain (click for larger version)

The leftists of the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) voted yesterday to approve a final rule prohibiting the discharge of wastewater from high-volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) to water or land in the Delaware River Basin. The final rule also “clarifies” the circumstances in which water, including wastewater, may be exported from or imported into the Basin. The bottom line from yesterday’s action is that nothing has materially changed. Fracking is currently banned in the Basin under a previous action by the Commission. And nobody discharges frack wastewater on the ground or in streams and rivers anywhere, including in the Delaware River Basin. So what did the vote accomplish for the rabid left? Just more virtue signaling.
