NY State Pension Fund Selling Chesapeake Stock, Keeping EQT & CNX

    February 10, 2022February 10, 2022

Yesterday the New York State Common Retirement Fund announced it will “restrict investments” in a hit list of 21 naughty shale oil and gas producing companies. One of the companies on the naughty list is Chesapeake Energy Corp. New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, trustee of the Fund (far-left Democrat) who is the sole manager of the fund, said the companies on his naughty list “have failed to demonstrate they are prepared for the transition to a low-carbon economy.” However, another 21 shale companies are on DiNapoli’s nice list and he will continue to invest in those companies, including CNX Resources and EQT Corporation.

Lack of New M-U Pipelines Hitting East Coast Manufacturers Hard

    February 10, 2022February 10, 2022
    click for larger version

The trade group Industrial Energy Consumers of America (IECA) sent a letter to members of Congress yesterday telling our dear leaders that not enough new natural gas pipelines are getting built, especially in the eastern part of the country, and that lack of new pipelines is having a seriously negative impact on U.S. manufacturers that can’t get enough gas, and the gas they’re buying costs too much. Lack of pipelines is “detrimental to new investments and job creation” according to the letter. In particular, the letter complained about flows along the mighty Transco pipeline, owned by Williams.

M-U Investors Continue to Press for Limits on New Drilling

    February 10, 2022February 10, 2022

Most Marcellus/Utica shale drillers are making money hand over fist. At least they’re making money if you don’t count certain losses from hedges. The financial numbers are heading in the right direction, for the most part. And investors are happy, rewarding M-U drillers by buying shares of stock at ever-higher prices. However, those same investors *don’t* want to see M-U drillers expand their drilling programs beyond what it takes to maintain current levels of production. Investors want the free cash flow being generated by M-U drillers to be given to investors in the form of either dividends or stock buybacks–not by expanding and drilling more.

“Following the Science” Shows Fracking is Good for the Environment

    February 10, 2022February 10, 2022

Last week Philadelphia lawyer Dan Markind, a real estate and corporate attorney who speaks and writes widely on the Marcellus, showed a connection between the developing situation of Russia invading Ukraine, and the Marcellus/Utica (see Connecting the Dots: Russia, Ukraine, and the Marcellus/Utica). This week Markind is back with another superb column, showing a connection between the M-U and the coronavirus. What connection? It’s all about “following the science”…

AGA Study: NatGas Essential to Reaching Goal of Net-Zero Carbon

    February 10, 2022February 10, 2022

A new study published by the America Gas Association (AGA) details how America’s natural gas, natural gas utilities, and delivery infrastructure will be *essential* to meeting our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals, including achieving net-zero emissions. Natural gas is used by some 187 million Americans each and every day. The AGA study (full copy below) outlines several scenarios and technology opportunities available to help the country reach mythical net-zero emissions by 2050. Natural gas plays a starring role!

ECA Marcellus Trust I Gives Investors 13.6 Cents per Unit in 4Q21

    February 9, 2022February 9, 2022

ECA Marcellus Trust I, traded over-the-counter on the pink sheets, canceled distributions (dividends) to investors for the first three quarters of 2020 due to the pandemic and the crash in oil and gas prices. The company restarted paying dividends in 4Q20–a grand total of 9/10ths of one penny per unit. In 1Q21 ECA increased its distribution to 3.1 cents per unit. In 2Q21, ECA decreased the payout again, down to 2.8 cents per unit. In 3Q21 ECA hiked the quarterly dividend all the way to 7.6 cents per unit. The company announced yesterday for 4Q21 it will nearly double the payout to 13.6 cents per unit.

Will Dominion Back Down on Pipe Under Blue Ridge Parkway?

    February 9, 2022February 9, 2022

Most of our coverage about pipelines is for large interstate pipelines, or perhaps large regional gathering pipeline systems. Every now and again we’ll bring you news about a “last mile” LDC (local distribution company) pipeline–the pipes utility companies install and maintain to run gas to homes and businesses. We have a story of that sort for you today. Dominion Energy, a huge utility company that used to be in the pipeline business (but sold its pipeline business to Warren Buffett a few years ago) wants to install a new 760-foot pipeline under the Blue Ridge Parkway (managed by the National Park Service) in North Carolina.

EIA Short-Term Outlook Predicts Higher Gas Demand/Price in Q1

    February 9, 2022February 9, 2022
    click for larger version

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), demand for natural gas (i.e. “consumption”) will go up during the first quarter of 2022, up from a previously forecasted estimate. EIA says consumption in Q1 will hit an average of 102.47 Bcf/d (billion cubic feet per day), up by 3.42 Bcf/d. Why? Due to below-average temperatures in the Northeast and Midwest, and due to ongoing strong demand for U.S. LNG exports. EIA, as part of its Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), also raised natgas consumption estimates for Q2–up by 650 MMcf/d (million cubic feet per day).

Shale Conference Focused on ESG Coming to Canton, OH

    February 9, 2022February 9, 2022

By now you know we’re not the biggest fans of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) initiatives. ESG efforts by shale companies (for us) smacks of attempting to pacify leftist wackos who will never be satisfied with any environmental efforts by “filthy” oil and gas companies. We ARE, however, in favor of strong environmental standards and believe most M-U companies already achieve them! However, ESG programs and certifications are here, likely to stay, and Marcellus/Utica drillers and pipeline companies (and the companies servicing them) must play the game if they want to sell natural gas. MDN’s good friend Joe Barone from ShaleDirectories.com is hosting an ESG-focused conference on Friday, March 25, at the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH. The conference is called the Utica Green Upstream & Midstream Conference. If you’re serious about ESG–investigating it, considering it, maybe even wanting to push your own ESG efforts forward–this is the conference for you to attend.

U.S. Could Become “Swing Producer” for Natural Gas, If…

    February 9, 2022February 9, 2022

On Monday the U.S.-EU Energy Council held a meeting in Washington chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm, EU High Representative/Vice President Josep Borrell Fontelles, and European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson. There was some talk about natural gas and ensuring sufficient supplies for Europe, especially with Russia’s Vladimir Putin threatening to shut off half of Europe’s supplies over Ukraine. There was plenty of blah blah blah talk about a “clean and just energy transition” to so-called renewables. Whatever. It was a forum held after the official meeting that caught our attention. Duncan Wood, Ph.D., Vice President for Strategy & New Initiatives at the Wilson Center made a statement with great insight about the U.S.’s potential role in supplying natural gas to the world via LNG.

20 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Jan 31-Feb 6

    February 9, 2022February 9, 2022

My how the mighty permit count has fallen. Three weeks ago there were 61 new shale drilling permits issued in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Two weeks ago that number fell to 33. And last week? The permit number fell again, to just 20. PA issued 13 new permits while OH issued 7. WV got skunked last week: A big, fat 0 new permits.

Tilden Marcellus Files for Voluntary Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

    February 8, 2022February 8, 2022

Tilden Marcellus LLC, a Canonsburg, Pa.-based oil and gas company, filed for chapter 11 protection last Friday in the Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Tilden is a “sister company” to Rockdale Marcellus. You may recall Rockdale went through bankruptcy last year, resulting in the sale of substantially all of its assets (in Pennsylvania) to Repsol for $220 million in cash (see Sale of Rockdale PA Assets to Repsol Closes – $220M Cash, $2M Debt). Tilden, while tightly related to Rockdale, has its own assets separate from Rockdale (less than $50 million).

Range Cuts Deal with ENGIE to Market Responsibly Sourced Gas

    February 8, 2022February 8, 2022

Last June, Range Resources announced it had joined the Project Canary TrustWell™ Responsible Gas Program (see Range Forms ESG Committee, Joins ‘Responsibly Sourced’ Gas Program). At that time Project Canary was monitoring two Range well pads with the hint that more production would (eventually) be included in the program. Range also held out the carrot of selling its responsibly sourced gas (RSG) to “a European multinational energy utility.” We now know who the buyer is.

WV Legislature Wants Tax Dept. Do-Over of NatGas Property Tax Rule

    February 8, 2022February 8, 2022

We’re not quite sure what to think of this. The West Virginia State Legislature passed House Bill (HB) 2581 on the last day of the annual WV legislative session in April 2021. HB 2581 required the State Tax Commissioner to develop a revised methodology to value oil and natural gas properties for the purposes of assessing property taxes. The State Tax Department submitted an emergency rule over the summer that was, quite frankly, a mess. The rule created a complex system that is currently mired in controversy with both drillers and landowners confused about how much of a tax bill they will owe this year. The legislature is doing it again.
