Stock Prices for M-U Drillers Soar, Lack of Pipes Caps Profits

    July 28, 2021July 28, 2021

Expectations coming from Wall Street are that pure-play drillers, like many in the Marcellus/Utica, will show a turnaround in their financials for the second quarter of 2021. According to S&P, investors took drillers at their word last year that they won’t “drill baby drill” the way they have in years gone by. The stock prices of nearly all major M-U drillers have soared over the past 12 months as a result. The biggest turnaround has been Antero Resources. Its stock price is up nearly 400% over the past 12 months! Range Resources’ stock price is up 140%.

Brooke County, WV Residents Fed Up with Fracking Noise

    July 28, 2021July 28, 2021
    Brooke County, WV

You know we are 100% pro-fracking here at MDN. But you also know we champion the rights of landowners and the people who live in areas where fracking happens. Drillers *must* be mindful of the impacts they have on the neighbors. Those impacts include truck traffic, lights (at night), and noise. Fracking equipment is loud. Some residents who live miles from fracking locations in Brooke County, WV are complaining to the County Commission that the noise is bothersome.

FERC’s Dick Glick Grilled by Republicans re Anti-Pipeline Policies

    July 28, 2021July 28, 2021
    FERC Chairman Richard Glick

It’s about time Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Richard “Dick” Glick was put on the hot seat over his ongoing rejection of every single natural gas pipeline project that comes before him, based on the cockamamie excuse they cause global warming. Yesterday GOP members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s energy subcommittee grilled Glick over his far-left views and constant rejection of pipeline projects. In essence, they asked him about his anti-pipeline philosophy. And as leftists so often do, Glick prevaricated, avoided their questions, and on occasion fibbed in his responses.

Weekly Shale Drilling Permits for PA, OH, WV: Jul 19-25

    July 28, 2021July 28, 2021

Only Pennsylvania issued new permits over the past week to drill shale wells. Both Ohio and West Virginia issued no new permits. New permits for PA were issued for Southwestern Energy (4 new permits), Laurel Mountain Production (3 new permits), and 1 new permit each for Cabot Oil & Gas, CNX Resources, and EQT (aka Rice Drilling).

Debrosse Memorial Report: Steep Decline in 2020 Ohio O&G Production

    July 27, 2021July 27, 2021

In June the Ohio Oil & Gas Association (OOGA) held its 74th Annual Winter Meeting in Columbus. Yeah, you read that right. The Winter Meeting was moved to June this year due to COVID. As with previous annual OOGA meetings, one of the speakers was Martin Shumway, technical director at Locus Bio-Energy Solutions. Shumway shared details from the latest DeBrosse Memorial Report (full copy below). What does the report show for 2020? Ohio oil and natural gas production both experienced steep declines last year. Oil production was down 16% from 2019, and natural gas production was down 10% from 2019. Even though the production news for 2020 is negative, this report is jam-packed with terrific, very useful information about Ohio’s shale industry.

TETCO Pipeline Ready to Restore Full Pressure Any Time

    July 27, 2021July 27, 2021

In June MDN brought you the news that Enbridge’s Texas Eastern Transmission (TETCO) pipeline is being flow-restricted by the Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA). Some 40% of the Marcellus/Utica molecules that flow through TETCO’s pipeline to destinations in the southeastern U.S. have disappeared and were predicted to stay that way until the end of September (see TETCO Pipe Throttling 40% of M-U Southbound Gas to Last All Summer). Good news: TETCO is telling customers it’s ready to increase pressure and flows the second PHMSA gives the OK, and there’s no remaining issues to be resolved. A ramp-up to full pressure could come soon–in July or August instead of September.

FERC Approves Plan to Restore Aborted Atlantic Coast Pipe ROW

    July 27, 2021July 27, 2021

Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) had laid 31 miles of pipeline and had cut trees for 222 miles along the 600-mile route before Dominion Energy, the builder, decided last summer it no longer wanted to be in the interstate pipeline business, canceling ACP (see Dominion Cancels Atlantic Coast Pipe, Sells Pipe Biz for $9.7B). In January of this year, Dominion filed a plan with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to clean up and “undo” the project (see Dominion Files Plan with FERC to “Undo” Atlantic Coast Pipe Work). Yesterday FERC pretty much endorsed Dominion’s clean-up plan, with one exception…

PA DEP to Require Radium Tests at Landfills Accepting Drill Cuttings

    July 27, 2021July 27, 2021

Yesterday PA Gov. Tom Wolf grabbed some headlines by having his Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) announce they will “soon” begin to require *all* landfills in the state to test leachate (water with nasty stuff in it that comes from landfills) for radioactivity. The Wolf DEP press release takes great pains to point out the new testing includes landfills “that accept unconventional oil and gas waste.” Which is the purpose of the announcement. To plant the seed that maybe, just maybe, drill cuttings are causing folks to glow in the dark. Radiation poisoning. Yet buried in the press release is this statement about a previous study of leachate from PA landfills with and without drill cuttings…

Biden TSA Issues New O&G Pipeline Cybersecurity Regulations

    July 27, 2021July 27, 2021

Increasingly ours is a world run by computers. Even in-the-ground pipelines are monitored and controlled by computers. The ransomware attack earlier this year against Colonial Pipeline, a pipeline that flows a significant amount of refined products (gasoline and diesel fuel) from the Gulf Coast where it’s refined as far north as New Jersey, was a wake-up call for all pipelines. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) heard the call and responded. In May the TSA issued an initial “security directive” requiring pipelines, including natural gas pipelines, to do certain things to protect themselves and the public they serve. Last week TSA issued a second such pipeline directive.

Ethane, Once a Waste Product/Expense, Now a Profit Maker

    July 27, 2021July 27, 2021

When drillers for natural gas sink a hole and methane (CH4) begins to come out of the ground, a number of other hydrocarbons come out of the ground along with it–at least in “wet gas” areas. Those other hydrocarbons include ethane (C2H6). Ethane production in some M-U wells goes as high as 6% or more of the hydrocarbons coming out. For years ethane has been a waste product, something drillers pay to dispose of–typically by “rejecting” it and slipping it into the methane stream. Increasingly ethane, which is now trading at its highest price in two-and-a-half years, has become a profit center. Why? Because it’s used to make plastics.

FirstEnergy Agrees to Pay $230M to Settle Nuke Plant Bribery Case

    July 26, 2021July 26, 2021

Ohio’s House Bill (HB) 6 law granted billions (plural) of dollars to FirstEnergy in an attempt to prop up the company’s economically failing nuclear power plants. FirstEnergy bribed state legislators to pass, and keep passed, HB 6 by paying out $61 million to a small group of insiders, including the now-former Speaker of the House (see FirstEnergy Involved in Bribery Scheme to Pass $1B Nuke Bailout Law). It is the biggest bribery scandal in Ohio history. FirstEnergy finally, openly, admitted they paid the bribe money just a few months ago (see FirstEnergy Admits to $61M Payment in Massive Bribery Scandal). Last Thursday the company announced it will pay the federal and Ohio state governments $230 million (split evenly) to make the mess it’s made go away.

Marcellus Gas Deliveries into Elba Island LNG Pick Up

    July 26, 2021July 26, 2021

Good news for the drillers who sell their Marcellus/Utica molecules to Kinder Morgan’s Elba Island (Georgia) LNG export facility: Demand is up. S&P Global Platts is reporting gas deliveries to Elba, near Savannah, registered approximately 312 MMcf/d (million cubic feet per day) on July 23. That was the highest level of deliveries into Elba since July 1.

Spire Warns of Gas Outage for “Hundreds of Thousands” in St. Louis

    July 26, 2021July 26, 2021
    click for larger version

Officials from St. Louis, MO utility company Spire continue to sound the alarm that a shutdown of the company’s Spire STL pipeline, which connects to and flows Marcellus/Utica gas from the Rockies Express (REX) pipeline to the St. Louis area, will result in “hundreds of thousands of customers” losing natural gas service during the coming winter. This is not an idle threat. This is the doing of a lawsuit by a Big Green group that will result in real harm to real people.

Dem PA Lawmaker Wants to Block Use of Creek Water for Fracking

    July 26, 2021October 18, 2021

A Pennsylvania Democrat lawmaker from Beaver County (southwestern PA) who professes to support the Marcellus industry, Rep. Rob Matzie, has written a letter to Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary Pat McDonnell (a fellow Dem) asking him to deny a request by PennEnergy Resources to withdraw as much as 3 million gallons of water a day from Big Sewickley Creek and one of its tributaries for shale fracking. Matzie says that’s just too much water to withdraw from the creek.
