PA Natural Gas Production Hits New All-Time High in 1Q21

    May 25, 2021May 25, 2021

Yesterday the Pennsylvania Independent Fiscal Office (IFO) released their latest quarterly Natural Gas Production Report for January through March 2021 (full copy below). The main indicators are moving in the right direction. In 1Q21 the number of new wells spud (begun to be drilled) was 133 new shale wells. That’s less than the 153 spud wells in 1Q20, which happened prior to the pandemic, but more than the spud numbers for the second, third, and fourth quarters of 2020. Even with less new drilling over the past few years, production numbers continued to soar, hitting a brand new, all-time high of 1.863 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) during 1Q21.

Markets “Baffled” by “Unexpected” Cabot Merger with Cimarex

    May 25, 2021May 25, 2021

Yesterday we shared the devastating (for us) news that Cabot Oil & Gas, one of the premier drillers in the Marcellus, is merging with (being acquired by) Permian driller Cimarex (see HUGE NEWS: Permian Driller Cimarex Buying Out Cabot Oil & Gas). Now that the bombshell news has had time to sink in, it appears we were not the only ones baffled by this merger. Investors were baffled too. Cimarex shares fell 7.2% to $66.07, while Cabot’s stock fell 6.9% to $16.59. Below we have reactions to the surprise announcement.

Judge Gets Angrier by the Day with Lawyers in Cabot Case

    May 25, 2021May 25, 2021

The judge in a lawsuit initiated by Cabot Oil & Gas against a Susquehanna County, PA landowner and his lawyers has had it up to here with the ongoing stonewalling and delay tactics by the landowner’s lawyers. “Four years we’ve been spinning our wheels on this nonsense,” the judge said. “The court is extremely frustrated, to put it politely.” The judge bordered on being impolite at a hearing last Thursday…

EQT Appeals $40M WV Royalty Lawsuit to 4th Circuit Court of Appeals

    May 25, 2021May 25, 2021

As we reported a month ago, a group of West Virginia landowners/rights owners filed a claim against EQT alleging the company had allowed leases to lapse, then at a later date reentered their property and drilled new wells (see Federal Judge Allows EQT Trespass Lawsuit in WV to Advance). The federal judge in the case, U.S. District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin, rejected EQT’s motion to dismiss and is allowing the case to advance. EQT is now appealing his decision to let it play out to the next level up, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

PA AG Continues to Target Marcellus re Keystone Landfill in NEPA

    May 25, 2021May 25, 2021

MDN has been writing about a privately-owned dump near Scranton, the Keystone Sanitary Landfill, for the past decade (see our stories here). Although the dump accepts all sorts of toxic substances, one of the more benign waste streams it accepts is drill cuttings from Marcellus Shale drillers. Anti-fossil fuelers would have you believe those cuttings are radioactive and will make you glow in the dark. It’s bogus. But now the state’s anti-fossil fuel Attorney General, Josh Shapiro, is investigating Keystone looking for evidence of radioactivity.

PIOGA Spring Meeting Proudly Affirms Oil & Gas Industry

    May 25, 2021May 25, 2021

Last Wednesday the Pennsylvania Independent Oil & Gas Association (PIOGA) held its Spring Meeting for 2021–in person! The meeting convened at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The several hundred who attended got the pleasure of hearing people talk positively about oil and gas and fossil fuels in general. PIOGA President Dan Weaver said, “Don’t be afraid to stand up and speak out.” CNX CEO Nick DeIuliis said, “This industry is a noble one. You are doers that should be celebrated by all and appreciated by the informed.” God bless them both! Isn’t it great to be affirmed for the good work you do, rather than smeared and lied about?

HUGE NEWS: Permian Driller Cimarex Buying Out Cabot Oil & Gas

    May 24, 2021May 24, 2021

We’re devastated. We know you’re not supposed to have favorites, but we do. Our favorite Marcellus/Utica driller for years has been Cabot Oil & Gas. We know some great folks who work for Cabot. It has been a peerless operator in the northeast Marcellus–making money when nobody else could. Cabot treats its landowners well, cares about the environment, gives big money to local nonprofit causes, and in general is the best kind of corporate citizen anybody could wish for. We suppose it was only a matter of time before Cabot became a target in this merger mania we’re currently going through. This morning Cabot announced a “merger of equals” with Cimarex, a big driller in the Permian and Midcontinent. The truth is Cimarex is buying out Cabot.

NGL Prices, Profitability “More than Double” for M-U Drillers

    May 24, 2021May 24, 2021

NGL (natural gas liquid) revenues for U.S. drillers soared in the first quarter of 2021–up 100% (i.e. doubled) over the same quarter in 2020, which was the quarter when COVID-19 began to seep into the public consciousness. In particular international demand for U.S. liquefied petroleum gas (LPG, or propane) helped propel NGL revenues higher in 1Q21. Guess which company posted the highest year-over-year increases for both NGL prices and revenues?

“Clean Energy for America” Bill Targets Landowner Royalties

    May 24, 2021May 24, 2021

The Democrats in Congress are making another run at punishing (eliminating) the use of fossil fuels. About a month ago Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (wacko from Oregon) and 24 fellow Senate Democrats introduced a bill called “The Clean Energy for America Act”–an overhaul of the federal energy tax code, aimed at combating nonexistent human-caused climate change. This time around the Dems are targeting (among other things) repeal of the percentage depletion allowance that landowners and investors use in offsetting royalty payments for tax purposes. In other words, mom and pop landowners that receive royalties will see their federal income tax bills go up. Unless you stop this disgusting bill now, before it becomes law.

Weymouth Compressor Shuts Down Again (4th Time), Antis Pounce

    May 24, 2021May 24, 2021

Every time the Weymouth, Massachusetts compressor station experiences an unplanned shutdown, as it did for the fourth time last week, it gives anti-fossil fuel activists more ammunition to try and convince the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Congress, and anyone else who will listen that this compressor should be permanently shuttered. Shutting it down now would have dire consequences for natural gas customers in places like Maine (see Maine PUC Says Shutting Weymouth, MA Compressor a Really Bad Idea), but antis don’t give a flip about humans. Will this latest shutdown give antis what they finally need to keep the station offline?

Fireworks at FERC Meeting Over Brilliant Sandbagging by Danly

    May 24, 2021May 24, 2021

Democrats and RINOs just hate it when someone else uses the same tactics against them that they so frequently use themselves. The shoe tends to pinch when it’s on the other foot. Such is the case with a bit of brilliant political maneuvering last Thursday at the most recent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) open meeting when one of the Republican Commissioners, James Danly, insisted (at the last minute) on appending language for approvals of two western pipeline projects that says, in essence, considerations of man-made global warming played no role in approving or disapproving the projects. Danly’s last-minute sandbagging enraged FERC Chairman Richard “Dick” Glick and his fellow far-left Democrat sidekick Allison Clements. It also had Republican-in-Name-Only (and backstabber) Neil Chatterjee spitting and sputtering. In the end, the three Republicans, including Chatterjee, went ahead and approved the two projects, over fierce objections by Glick. Three cheers for James Danly!

PA Antis to Flood Virtual Hearing re PECO NatGas Reliability Stn

    May 24, 2021May 24, 2021

Headquartered in Philadelphia, PECO (a subsidiary of Exelon Corp.) is Pennsylvania’s largest electric and natural gas utility, delivering power to more than 1.6 million electric customers and more than 532,000 natural gas customers in southeastern Pennsylvania. Last fall PECO floated a plan to build a natural gas reliability station in Marple Township (Delaware County, PA) to allow the company to distribute more natural gas into Delaware County through 11.5 miles of new natural gas main lines. As you might expect, the neighbors in the densely populated area of the reliability station are up in arms over the plan (see Protesters Want PECO to Abandon Plans for NatGas Reliability Stn). The state Public Utility Commission (PUC) is holding telephone hearings this week on PECO’s plans.

FERC Approves 2-Year Extension to Build NESE Pipe to NYC

    May 21, 2021May 21, 2021

On March 19 Williams petitioned the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to extend the time to build the FERC-approved Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline project in the New York City area by an extra two years (see NESE Rises from the Dead! Williams Petitions FERC for More Time). The news sent anti-drilling zealots into a tailspin who thought they had long-buried the project (see Williams’ FERC Request for More Time re NESE Causing Exploded Heads). Yesterday FERC granted Williams’ petition to extend the timeline another two years. No doubt FERC’s action will cause another round of exploding heads.

Which M-U Drillers are Likely Next Targets for Acquisition?

    May 21, 2021May 21, 2021

M&A, or mergers & acquisitions, is on everyone’s mind in the oil and gas industry. Particularly in the Marcellus/Utica region. EQT, under the leadership of Toby Rice, already the largest natural gas producer in the country, has been on the prowl. In the past eight months EQT has picked up all of Chevron’s M-U assets (see EQT Buys Chevron M-U Assets for $735M, Floats $350M in New Stock) and most recently, EQT picked up all of Alta Resources’ M-U assets (see EQT Buys Alta Res. PA Assets for $2.9B in “Transformative” Deal). EQT is still in the hunt (see Even After Chevron, EQT Still in Hunt to Buy CNX, Other Producers). Who’s next on the list to get acquired? We have some possibilities.
