Phase II of Hillabee Expansion Goes Live, M-U Gas to Florida

    May 4, 2020May 4, 2020

Last week MDN told you that the second phase of Sabal Trail, a $3.2 billion, 515-mile interstate natural gas pipeline in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama to deliver (in part) Marcellus gas to the southeast was approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and is coming online now (see FERC OKs Extra Compression on Sabal Trail Pipe, M-U Gas to FL). Sabal Trail connects to Williams’ Hillabee Expansion Project, which is a pipeline spur built off the huge Transco pipeline system.

LNG Limited, Building US & Canada LNG Export Plants, Implodes

    May 4, 2020May 4, 2020

LNG Limited (LNGL), based in Australia, has been working on a couple of North American LNG export projects over the past half-decade or more. One of them, called Bear Head, would be built in Nova Scotia, Canada and (potentially) export Marcellus/Utica molecules. The other, Magnolia LNG, would be located in Louisiana and yes, potentially export M-U molecules as well. LNGL was in the process of selling itself and its LNG projects to Singapore investor LNG9 PTE for $75 million when LNG9 pulled out of the deal (see Investor Bails on Nova Scotia Bear Head LNG Export Project). Now LNGL is imploding.

    May 1, 2020May 1, 2020

Antero Resources issued its first-quarter 2020 update yesterday, delivering outstanding earnings guidance that “completely caught Wall Street and the bears off guard.” Management cut 2020 capex by $250 million, to $750 million (41% lower than 2019) while maintaining current production. Antero said it will hit $175 million free cash flow *this year* by spending less and producing the same.

Gulfport Energy Swallows a Poison Pill to Prevent Hostile Takeover

    May 1, 2020May 4, 2020

Like Chesapeake Energy last week and Williams in late March, the Gulfport Energy board has decided to swallow a poison pill. Some companies call poison pills a “stockholder rights agreement” or a “shareholder rights plan.” In Gulfport’s case, they call it a “tax benefits preservation plan.” It doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s all the same thing. It’s a provision that defends the company against a takeover.

LOLA Energy II Says 26 EQT Shale Wells Trespass on Their Leases

    May 1, 2020May 1, 2020

Last July MDN broke the news that LOLA Energy had filed a lawsuit in Greene County, PA against EQT for allegedly drilling shale wells under property EQT formerly leased, but property for which the leases had lapsed and were subsequently scooped up by LOLA Energy II (see LOLA Energy Sues EQT for Trespass, Drilling Wells Under LOLA Land). We also broke the news about a second LOLA lawsuit against EQT for the same thing (see LOLA Energy Files 2nd Lawsuit Against EQT for Trespass in SWPA). LOLA is now “ramping up” litigation having filed (or in the process of filing) seven lawsuits. LOLA claims EQT has infringed on 26 of its leases.

Natl Rig Count Falls Another 59; Marcellus Loses 4 Rigs Last Wk

    May 1, 2020May 1, 2020

Not unsurprisingly, the U.S. rig count (for both oil and gas, although mainly oil) continues to plummet week after week. The latest numbers show rigs taken out of active duty (laid down) decreased another 59 over the past week. That’s better than the 76 laid down the week before (see Carnage Continues: Rig Count Down Another 76, Marcellus Down 2), but still not great. Hundreds of rigs have been laid down over the past month–most of them in the oil patch. But not all. Last week the Marcellus lost four rigs after losing one the week before.

One Company Drills Most M-U Wells Over 8K Feet: Deep Well Services

    May 1, 2020May 1, 2020
Source: Deep Well Services (click for larger version)

It’s been a while since we’ve written about one of our favorite companies: Deep Well Services (DWS). DWS is a Marcellus/Utica-born oilfield services company that specializes in “snubbing” work (completing those super-long laterals you read about). DWS has long been known for its technological innovations. The company has drilled the three longest onshore laterals in the U.S. (we’re pretty sure in the entire world), all of them over 20,000 feet, or nearly four miles (see Deep Well Services Helps Drill 3 Longest Onshore Laterals in U.S.). In fact, if the lateral (horizontal) portion of a well anywhere in the U.S. is longer than 8,000 feet, odds are it was snubbed by DWS.

Chesapeake Energy Prepares Potential Ch. 11 Bankruptcy Filing

    April 30, 2020April 30, 2020

It’s not a done deal yet, but according to sources willing to speak with Reuters, Chesapeake Energy is preparing the paperwork for a bankruptcy filing as one of its options to deal with debt payments it likely will not be able to pay this year. This should not be a surprise to anyone. We’ve been warning about a potential bankruptcy filing since last November (see Chesapeake Energy 3Q – Slash Drilling 30%, Bankruptcy Possible).

Barging Shale Wastewater on Ohio River Back on the Radar

    April 30, 2020April 30, 2020

In a piece of stellar investigative journalism and reporting, MDN friend Bob Downing (at Kallanish Energy) has broken a story that barging Marcellus and Utica Shale wastewater (brine) on the Ohio River is once again under active consideration. Downing discovered applications recently filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build three barge terminals in Ohio, all of them located near injection wells to handle barged shale wastewater.

Virginia Tech Drilling 15,500-Foot Rogersville Shale Test Well

Is Virginia energy-schizophrenic? For years it has appeared The Old Dominion has had a grudge against fossil fuels. Lawmakers and residents consistently attempt to block federal pipeline projects, like Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley, from crossing in and through the state (see Virginia Passes New Law Aimed at Stopping Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Virginia Landowners Sue to Emasculate FERC in Bid to Block MVP). The state recently passed a law outlawing (in the future) the stuff every citizen exhales with every breath–carbon dioxide (see Virginia Adopts Regulation to Limit Carbon Pollution, Fight Climate Change).

FERC Scales Back Review of Pipe Connecting M-U Gas to Gulf Coast

    April 30, 2020April 30, 2020

In September 2018 MDN brought you the exciting news that Enable Midstream Partners had announced a plan to build a new interstate natural gas pipeline project called the Gulf Run Pipeline which will, in part, connect Marcellus/Utica gas supplies to the Gulf Coast for exporting (see New Pipeline Designed to Connect M-U Gas to Gulf Coast LNG Exports). Fast forward to this year and although the project is still alive and kicking, Enable has scaled it back.

New York’s Frack Ban Cuts Off 12M Acres of the Marcellus Shale

    April 30, 2020April 30, 2020
    click for larger version

Earlier this month in New York State while no one was paying attention, distracted with literal life and death issues due to the coronavirus pandemic, the uber-corrupt and sleazy Andrew Cuomo slipped in a permanent ban on fracking into the annual state budget bill, which is now the law of our fallen (and sick) land (see Cuomo PERMANENTLY Bans NY Fracking in Now-Adopted Budget). New York has 12 million acres under which the Marcellus/Utica Shale lies, yet accessing it is now banned. NY produces 1% of the natural gas it uses each year. The rest is imported.
