Athens County Anti-Frackers Continue to Fight Injection Well

In January, MDN told you that a group of anti-drilling nutters in Athens County, OH had sued to try and stop a new, second injection well from being drilled by K&H Partners at the same site where there is currently an operational injection well (see Athens County, OH Anti-Drillers Sue to Stop New Injection Well). The Athens County Fracking Action Network (ACFAN) objected to the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) decision to issue a permit for the new, second injection well.

ACFAN is continuing their legal challenge. The group has filed a new complaint against the ODNR saying the ODNR has not been forthcoming with certain public records sought by ACFAN as part of their original lawsuit. In other words, ACFAN is trying to abuse the law to slow down, delay and kill a legitimate and legal business from doing business in Athens County, OH. But then, that’s how petulant children who grow up to be petulant adults behave…

“Athens 8” Criminal Protesters Receive Slap on Wrist by OH Court

Eight loud, obnoxious and anything-but-peaceful protesters were arrested in February near Athens, OH for trespassing and illegally blocking the entrance to an injection well site (see Break the Law in OH, Get an Award – Anti-Drilling Nuttery on Display). The eight alleged criminals–charged with criminal trespass–have successfully pleaded their crimes down to disorderly conduct and let go with a slap on the wrist by an Ohio court.

One of the protesters, a “sustainable” organic farmer, Gilbert (Kip) Rondy, someone who operates “unheated greenhouses” (apparently that’s a badge of honor instead of a sanity test), read a statement to the judge that attempts to excuse his and the other protesters’ lawless actions by saying they had to do it to protect Mother Earth. Judge Lets PA Anti-Driller Sip More Lattes, Attorney Claims “Big Win”

Last Monday a little known anti-driller with a potty mouth from northeast PA–Vera Scroggins–had her day in court. You may recall that Vera had repeatedly trespassed on drilling sites owned by Cabot Oil & Gas in Susquehanna County and a judge slapped her with a restraining order last year. Vera said the court order prevented her from sipping lattes at the local Price Chopper grocery store (land leased by Cabot) so she got herself a lawyer from the American Civil Liberties Union and asked the judge to reconsider (see PA Anti-Drilling Activist Asks Court to Lift Cabot Restraining Order). Cabot had no objections as long as she’s still barred from active drill sites and Cabot offices. So the judge, late last week, did just that–he tweaked the restraining order to allow Vera to go sip her lattes, but nothing else has changed. That is, she’s still barred from trespassing on active drill sites and Cabot office property.

One of Vera’s attorneys claims the judge’s decision is a “big win.” Er, OK. Whatever. What Vera actually won was exactly nothing, except another 5 minutes of “fame” in local media around Montrose–population 1,617…

Anti-Drillers Attack Crude-by-Rail Traveling Through PA

The leftist anti-drillers at the Pennsylvania news organization called PublicSource, backed by the likes of Teresa Heinz Kerry, is taking aim at shale-produced crude oil that travels by railroad. In a hit piece in which they begin by doing a bait-and-switch, starting with a derailment of ethanol (nothing at all to do with oil or gas), they then parry and say derailments of oil in Pennsylvania are an imminent threat and danger to PA residents. The hue and cry has gone up: Either have the feds regulate shale oil on railroads out of existence, or preferably just stop shipping crude by rail. Who wants all that nasty crude from North Dakota anyway? Funny how the answer is always the same no matter the question: just stop extracting fossil fuels.

PA Anti-Drilling Activist Asks Court to Lift Cabot Restraining Order

Vera Scroggins, a local and outside NEPA a little-known anti-driller in Susquehanna County with a potty mouth (see this video of her harassing filmmaker Phelim McAleer), had her day in a Montrose, PA court yesterday in which she and her commie-lib ACLU lawyers tried to get a restraining order lifted. Vera, according to Cabot Oil & Gas, repeatedly violated no trespassing requests from the company. She would show up at Cabot drill sites playing tour guide to obtuse politicians from New York City and on occasion even Hollywood celebrities (like Susan Sarandon), pretending the drill sites and compressor plants she showed them are somehow harming the environment. Cabot repeatedly told Vera to please stop entering roadways and drill sites as a safety precaution. Protesters Shut Down Anadarko Drill Site in Lycoming County, PA

The very twisted philosophy of so-called “Earth First” group members seems to be that humans are an infestation on Mother Earth, hence the name (full of self-loathing people, apparently). A group of Earth Firsters, most of them not from Pennsylvania, protested and shut down an Anadarko Petroleum drilling site in PA yesterday. Anadarko owns leases land in the Tiadaghton State Forest in Lycoming County, PA where they have an active drilling site (near Williamsport). Three of the protesters locked themselves to a solid concrete pipe embedded with shrapnel that reached across the road blocking the way to the drill site. The protesters had to be cut free at great personal danger to themselves and the first responders who cut them free. Five protesters in all were arrested.

MDN received exclusive photos from someone at the scene (below). We’ve also located a video showing the shrapnel embedded in a solid concrete pipe–and the gentle care the local first responders took in protecting the protesters as they cut them free. First responders put their own lives at risk to free these idiots. We would have been far less gentle (picking the whole thing up with a forklift and dropping it on the side of the road–with these kooks attached–comes to mind). MDN told you yesterday about the City of Dunkirk, NY that has bitten off the natural gas hand that feed them–by passing a fracking ban (see Dunkirk, NY City Council Bites Off the NatGas Hand that Feeds It). The dolts on Dunkirk City Council said they want the entire county–Chautauqua County–to follow suit and ban fracking countywide. County legislators attended a special session Wednesday night where they heard some truth, and a whole lotta lies, about hydraulic fracturing.

Dunkirk, NY City Council Bites Off the NatGas Hand that Feeds It

Talk about biting (off) the hand that feeds you. Get this one: The dunderheaded City Council members of Dunkirk, NY (near Buffalo) voted yesterday to ban fracking. Not only that, they want the entire county to follow suit! City Council members recited, almost chapter and verse, the same worn-out old lies told in Gasland, the fictitious movie from Josh Fox. After reading their comments we’re left to think the sum total of research done by the braintrust in Dunkirk into fracking was to munch popcorn and watch a movie. They apparently bought it hook, line and sinker. What dolts.

Here’s the thing. Three months ago almost to the day Andrew “can’t make a decision” Cuomo visited Dunkirk to tell them that the coal-powered electric generating plant that was about to close, and take some 40% of the local tax contributions to the City with it, had his lordship’s permission to convert to burning natural gas–fracked gas–instead (see Dunkirk, NY Electric Plant Saved – Converting from Coal to NatGas). City Council rejoiced. “Yah! We get to keep 40% of the taxes that would have disappeared overnight!” And now? “Ban that evil, nasty fracking.” The very same fracking that will bring natgas from other states to Dunkirk so they can burn it to make electricity. Maybe that electric plant should reconsider its decision and close after all. Hmmm….

PA State Treasurer Rob McCord Unveils Gas Death Plan

Poor old “Pass a Joint for John” Hanger dropped out of the race to be the Democrat nominee for governor in PA. Who will be next? Apparently not State Treasurer Rob McCord. Get this, he’s just released an utterly brilliant natural gas plan–tax the whole darned thing 10%…on everything produced. According to McCord, that will raise $1.63 billion for the state in just the first year.

Of course the plan is, in reality, utterly brain dead and moronic. If such a plan were ever to see the light of day it would effectively kill all shale drilling in the state. Done. Finished. Over. And then instead of the $200 million+ PA now extracts in a reasonable impact fee–they would get nothing. How on earth do these people keep getting elected to office? Chesapeake Climate Action Asks Obama to Nix Cove Point LNG Exports

The unreasonable (not able to be reasoned with) and irrational (incapable of rational thought) fossil fuel-haters of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) and other similar-minded groups sent President Obama a letter requesting that he should (surprise!) slow down/reconsider/kill exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Dominion’s planned Cove Point, MD LNG export facility (see Celebrate! Yes boys and girls, so-called environmentalist organizations like CCAN, 350.org, the Sierra Clubers and other unheard of groups just blame it all on global warming. Drill in shale deposits? Nope–too much global warming. Encourage electric generating facilities to convert from polluting coal to cleaner-burning natgas? Nope. That’ll lead to global warming. RIT Professor Says Jail Those Who Don’t Believe in Global Warming

A so-called professor of philosophy at the Rochester Institute of Technology says people like MDN editor Jim Willis should go to jail because we’re not Kool Aid drinkers who believe in the myth of man-made global warming. PA Dems: No Leg to Stand on Criticizing $75M Forest Drilling Plan

Another hypocritical PA House Democrat takes a potshot at the sitting Republican governor over the issue of drilling in PA state forests. As you may recall, Gov. Tom Corbett included a plan to raise $75 million for the state budget by allowing a bit more drilling than there already is in state forests (see PA Gov. Corbett’s Bold Plan for More Drilling in State Forests). The $75 million he would raise is out of a $29.4 BILLION budget–or exactly 0.00255 of the budget. Essentially a rounding error. And yet, hypocritical Democrats like State Rep. Greg Vitali (Delaware County, PA) chairman of the Pennsylvania House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, continue to heckle Corbett over that $75 million (see his letter below).

Here’s the hypocrisy that needs to be thrown right back in Vitali’s face: His committee previously approved plans that allowed then-Gov. Ed “Fast Eddie” Rendell (a Democrat) to raise $444 MILLION from doing the very same thing! It was only after Fast Eddie had his cash that he closed down drilling in state forests with an executive order. Corbett had the guts to lift that order and ask for another $75 million on non-invasive, under the ground (not on the surface) drilling to raise some more money for the budget, and the Dems throw a hypocritical cow. Shame on them…

NJ Congressman Wants Permanent Drilling Ban in Dela. River Basin

U.S. Congressman Rush Holt from New Jersey is, by all accounts, a pretty smart guy. He worked as a nuclear physicist and starred on Jeopardy! (going up against the Watson robot) before joining Congress in 1999. Holt is also an anti-drilling Democrat, apparently under the vise grip of far-left environmentalist organizations. He and his far-out enviro pals (including Sierra Clubers) took the opportunity of last week’s announcement of the new incoming head of the Delaware River Basin Commission (see DRBC Selects Steve Tambini as New Leader, Enviro Groups Unsure) to call for a permanent ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin. Oh, and just for good measure, they also want all new shale drilling in the PA and WV to stop immediately, until “someday”…when Holt and his “smart” friends determine whether or not it’s really safe.

If Holt thinks that 60,000+ safely drilled shale wells is not enough proof, maybe Holt, who is (thankfully) not running again this November, is not so smart after all…

PA Environmental Council Appoints New Leader, Ties to CSSD

The mostly anti-drilling Pennsylvania Environmental Council has a new leader. We say “mostly” in deference to being corrected by the PEC a few years ago when we called them outright anti-drilling (see Pennsylvania Environmental Council Publishes New “Green Lease” Guide). On Friday the PEC named Davitt B. Woodwell to the position of president and chief executive officer, succeeding Paul M. King, who is retiring. The PEC is not dogmatically opposed to Marcellus drilling like many similar organizations in the environmentalist movement. The PEC at least allows there will be some drilling (they’re pragmatic). But make no mistake–they really wish there was no shale drilling in the state. They wouldn’t say that out loud in polite company–but that’s what they think and talk about behind closed doors.

The newly promoted Mr. Woodwell is a participant in the so-far underwhelming Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD)–an uneasy partnership between the shale drilling industry and environmentalists (see CSSD’s Andrew Place Talks About 3-Leg Approaches & Firehoses). Woodwell belongs to the Standards and Evaluation Committee of the CSSD. We’ll keep a close eye on the PEC and Mr. Woodwell for signs of Marcellus trouble-making. Anti-Drillers Turn Out in VA to Disrupt Forum on Drilling

Ignorant anti-drillers–typically old hippie retreads and hippie wannabes–seem to derive meaning from their miserable existence by turning up at meetings where drilling will be discussed so they can cause trouble. They don’t listen because their minds are closed. They simply want to be heard. Real communication takes place when there is both a sender and a receiver (Speech 101). Anti-drillers are simply stuck on “sender” mode–they never open up and receive.

A perfect example is a meeting held last week in Virginia. The Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) sponsored a forum in Fredericksburg to look at the issue of whether oil and gas drilling should be allowed on land protected from other development by conservation easements. Shale drilling may soon come to land with easements–easements that otherwise prohibit development but allows drilling–in the Taylorsville Basin, along the eastern/central part of the state around Caroline County, VA (see Fracking Finally on the Way in Virginia? Maybe Yes, Maybe No). The VOF invited Mike Ward, executive director of the Virginia Petroleum Council, to speak and answer questions about potential drilling.
