PA PUC Cuts $48K Refund Check for Mariner East Pipeline Penalty

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

In March, MDN told you that the Deputy Chief Administrative Law Judge of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) issued a ruling against the now completed Mariner East 2 pipeline project, assessing a $51,000 fine on the project for work done near an apartment complex (see PA PUC Judge Fines Mariner East Pipe $51K for Work Near Apt Bldg). In June, the full PUC voted to accept and enforce the $51,000 fine recommended by the PUC judge (see PA PUC Upholds ME Pipe Fine of $51K for Work Near Apartment Bldg). Two months later (in August), the PUC voted to reverse its own decision, lowering the fine from $51,000 to $3,000 (see PA PUC Reduces ME Pipe Fine to $3K for Work Near Apartment Bldg). However, that wasn’t the end of the story…

OH Senate Passes Bill to Expand Shale Drilling on State-Owned Land

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

Two days ago, MDN told you about Ohio House Bill (HB) 507, a “poultry” bill that (at the last minute) was amended by the Ohio Senate to redesignate natural gas as a “green” energy source and also a measure expanding drilling on and under state-owned land (see Ohio Senate Bill Would Expand Shale Drilling on State-Owned Land). And just like that, the Ohio Senate voted to approve the bill as amended. Which has the lefties at the Cleveland Plain Dealer really steamed…an extra bonus in our book!

Williams, Coterra, Dominion Partner on Certified Low-Emission Gas

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

It appears that Williams (pipeline company) and Coterra Energy (driller), along with end-customer Dominion Energy (local gas utility) have developed their own “responsible gas” certification scheme apart from the three such schemes widely used by many Marcellus/Utica drillers currently. In an announcement yesterday, Williams said the deal struck with Coterra and Dominion establishes “the industry’s first next generation natural gas certification process across all segments of the value chain from production through gathering and transmission with deliveries through 2023.”

Republicans Push Back Against Endangered Species Status for Bats

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

On Wednesday, Congressional House Committee on Natural Resources Ranking Member Bruce Westerman (Republican from Arkansas) and U.S. Reps. Tom Tiffany (Republican from Wisconsin) and Pete Stauber (Republican from Minnesota) sent a letter signed by 24 House members to both the House and Senate Appropriations (i.e. spending money) committees. The letter requests that any year-end funding package prohibits federal funding for the listing of the northern long-eared bat as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

WoodMac Report: 5 Reasons to be Cheerful for Fossil Energy

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

It’s been a tough year for many people–for just about every human on planet earth. Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and the fallout with Europe cutting back on purchases of Russian oil and natural gas have rippled across the planet, causing high energy prices and a recession. Energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie (WoodMac) has put together analysis in a new report that looks for the proverbial silver lining in all the bad news. WoodMac has appropriately named this report, “The Silver Linings Playbook.” In it (full copy below), WoodMac lists five key developments that, despite the setbacks of the past year, are “laying the foundations for the delivery of more reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.” Interestingly, all five of the developments deal with using more fossil energy.

21 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Nov 28-Dec 4

    December 9, 2022December 9, 2022

Last week (Nov. 28-Dec. 4), the number of permits issued to drill new shale wells rose slightly to 21 from the prior week’s 17. The big surprise is why. Pennsylvania only handed out five new permits. Ohio issued even fewer–just three. It was West Virginia with 12 new permits that saved the day.

DRBC Adopts Meaningless Prohibition on Shale Wastewater Disposal

    December 8, 2022December 8, 2022
DRBC Iron Curtain (click for larger version)

The leftists of the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) voted yesterday to approve a final rule prohibiting the discharge of wastewater from high-volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) to water or land in the Delaware River Basin. The final rule also “clarifies” the circumstances in which water, including wastewater, may be exported from or imported into the Basin. The bottom line from yesterday’s action is that nothing has materially changed. Fracking is currently banned in the Basin under a previous action by the Commission. And nobody discharges frack wastewater on the ground or in streams and rivers anywhere, including in the Delaware River Basin. So what did the vote accomplish for the rabid left? Just more virtue signaling.

Vanguard Quits Radical Net Zero Group After Pushback from AGs

    December 8, 2022December 8, 2022

Well, that didn’t take long! Yesterday MDN told you that the Attorney Generals from 13 states had recently filed a protest with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) seeking to block Vanguard, a MAJOR investor (with $7.2 trillion of assets under management), from buying stocks in electric utility companies. Why? Because Vanguard is (among other things) a member of the radicalized Net Zero Asset Managers group–a group whose mission is to force companies to abandon the use of fossil energy. And just like that, Vanguard quit its membership in the Net Zero nutters group. It seems Vanguard values profits over pretentious virtue signaling, after all.

Marcellus/Utica Drillers (All Gas Drillers) Had Fantastic 3Q22

    December 8, 2022December 8, 2022

Gas-focused drillers in the U.S. tracked by RBN Energy (most of them with major operations in the Marcellus/Utica region) had a stellar third quarter financially. The group of 11 publicly-traded drillers that RBN tracks tripled their earnings on average, and cash flows were up 150% over the same quarter last year. EQT Corp., now helmed by Toby Rice, was the most profitable company on the list, earning $2.6 billion in Q3 while generating $3.1 billion in cash flow. What about the others?

December STEO Prediction: Production & Prices Up in 2023

    December 8, 2022December 8, 2022

Once a month, the analysts at the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) issue the agency’s Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), their best guess about where energy prices and production will go in the next 12 months or so. We sometimes poke some good-natured fun at the EIA because one month their predictions go up, the next month down, etc. What about the latest STEO, published on Tuesday? EIA predicts average natural gas production will be just above 100 Bcf/d in 2023 (after predicting last month it would average below 100 Bcf/d). As for the commodity price of gas, EIA says the Henry Hub spot price will average right around $6/MMBtu in 1Q23.

Baker Hughes Tests 10% Hydrogen Blend in Italian Compressor

    December 8, 2022December 8, 2022

From time to time, we bring you news about hydrogen (H2) because, for many, H2 is the next “big thing” in energy. Many on the left are dazzled by H2 energy, although some of the more extreme elements of the left oppose H2 energy because most H2 is produced by cracking methane (see Appalachian Leftwing Group Turns Against Hydrogen Power). It’s still an unanswered question as to whether or not H2 can be successfully mixed into the existing natural gas pipeline system and burned by existing appliances and equipment. We spotted news that is something of a breakthrough for H2–an experiment with Baker Hughes and an Italian energy infrastructure company called Snam S.p.A.

Warnock Senate Win Equals Greater Damage to Country re Energy

    December 8, 2022December 8, 2022

Perhaps like us, you didn’t pay much attention to the Georgia Senate runoff race. Since the Democrats already have cackling Kamala if they need her, the Dems control the Senate by default 50-50 (Kamala used to break ties). So whether Raphael Warnock (the leftist kook Democrat) won, which he did, or Herschel Walker (former football star and Republican) won, it didn’t really matter, right? Wrong. Just that one extra vote, 51-49, has given much more power to the Democrat anti-fossil fuelers that run the Senate (i.e. Chuck Schumer), than we could have imagined. For example: Warnock’s win all but ensures Dick Glick will get reappointed to FERC early next year–a profoundly sad outcome.

Manchin’s “Save MVP” Permitting Reform Bill Flames Out Again

    December 7, 2022December 7, 2022

Once again, a permitting reform bill floated by U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (from West Virginia) with a provision to complete the 94% completed 303-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) has flamed out. Manchin made a deal with the devil–his own Democrat Party–to vote for the misnamed and terrible Inflation Reduction Act (a warmed-over version of the Green New Deal) in return for HIS party’s support to pass a so-called permitting reform bill that would, among other things, allow MVP to finish up without court interference (see Joe Manchin Cuts MVP “Deal” in Return for Selling Out Country).
