API President Bows Down to Global Warming Gods in Congress Talk

    November 3, 2021November 3, 2021

American Petroleum Institute (API) president and CEO, Mike Sommers, recently testified before the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform to discuss the natural gas and oil industry’s priorities and API’s ludicrous support for so-called pricing carbon (i.e. a huge carbon tax), support for regulating methane (into oblivion), all while still trying to reliably produce American energy. Those priorities are irreconcilably impossible, but, whatever. The thing that really irked us was that Sommers obsequiously genuflected to the global warming gods during the hearing.

9 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Oct 25-31

    November 3, 2021November 3, 2021

It was a pretty paltry week for new shale drilling permits in the Marcellus/Utica. Two weeks ago Pennsylvania issued 21 permits to drill new shale wells. They must have shot their wad because last week PA issued just two new permits–the lowest number in PA we’ve seen in…we can’t remember how long. Ohio issued no new permits for Utica drilling last week…zero…goose egg. Only West Virginia held out some promise, issuing seven new permits for shale drilling last week.

Radical Green Groups Challenge MVP in 4th Circus Court – Again

    November 2, 2021November 2, 2021
MVP Route (click for larger version)

Here we go again. Early this year the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) issued a permit to Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) to run through 3.5 miles of woodlands, and under the Appalachian Trail, in the Jefferson National Forest in Monroe County in West Virginia, in and Giles and Montgomery counties in Virginia (see US Forest Service Issues Approval for MVP Thru Jefferson Forest). Not long after, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) endorsed USFS’s plan by issuing a right-of-way grant and its own permit to MVP, saying pipeline construction along the path won’t kill too many bats and other critters (see BLM Approves MVP Request to Build in Jefferson Natl Forest). It didn’t take long for radicalized groups including the Sierra Club, Appalachian Voices, and Wild Virginia to sue.

PA Senate Passes Resolution to Block State Joining RGGI Carbon Tax

    November 2, 2021April 20, 2022

Last week the Pennsylvania Senate passed a concurrent resolution that would block the state from joining the so-called Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI, pronounced “Reggie”), a carbon tax that aims to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of coal and natural gas to generate electricity in the state. PA will join RGGI next year if the Republican-controlled legislature can’t derail it. Unfortunately, the bipartisan Senate vote (with several Democrats joining Republicans) was 32-18, one vote short of a two-thirds majority needed to override the inevitable veto from leftist Gov. Tom Wolf.

EPA Launches Massive Power Grab, Targets O&G Methane Emissions

    November 2, 2021November 2, 2021

The federal Environmental Protection Agency, the left’s favorite tool to undermine the U.S. Constitution, is attempting to do just that–undermine the Constitution. Today the EPA is floating a massive new regulation that seizes control of oil and gas drilling (and pipelines) away from the individual states, as provided for under the Constitution, and centralizes control in Washington, D.C. under the EPA. How? By forcing a one-size-fits-all regulation on so-called fugitive methane emissions that all states must comply with.

Who Certifies Responsibly Sourced Gas (RSG) & How Does it Work?

    November 2, 2021November 2, 2021

Seems like everybody is getting “responsible” all of a sudden. Over the past year, we went from nobody hearing of “responsibly sourced gas” (RSG) to now almost everyone clamoring to hop onto the RSG bandwagon. At least that seems to be the case here in the Marcellus/Utica. The nascent RSG movement is rapidly developing. By our count, there are four independent organizations/programs that certify parts of the natural gas industry and provide a certification that gas is responsibly produced and/or sourced. So far there have been at least seven (maybe more) major M-U drillers and several M-U pipeline companies to sign on for RSG certification. We try to make sense of the RSG landscape below…

Bipartisan Bill in Congress Aims to Boost Hydrogen Infrastructure

    November 2, 2021November 2, 2021

Last week six U.S. Senators (five of whom from major energy-producing states) introduced a series of three bipartisan bills aimed at encouraging the development of hydrogen energy infrastructure. Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, was one of the sponsors and promoters. So too was Chris Coons, far-left Democrat from Delaware. That shows the range of support for efforts to help goose hydrogen use in this country.

COP26 Must Face Reality: Living Without O&G, Plastics Impossible

    November 2, 2021November 2, 2021
    Biden caught napping at COP26

As the COP26 climate change conference wraps up, complete with Joe Biden caught dozing off during one particularly interesting session (watch the video), the worldwide left media machine is in overdrive pumping out end-of-the-world horror story predictions if mankind doesn’t stop using fossil fuels and manufacturing plastics today. You know, the same fossil fuels and plastics every darned one of COP26 delegates used to get to that idiotic conference. We spotted an incredibly lucid and blunt assessment of the role of fossil fuels and plastics, and how they aren’t going anywhere.

NEPA Huge Deal – $6B Plant to Convert Marcellus Gas to Gasoline

    November 1, 2021November 1, 2021
This rendering, provided by Nacero Inc., shows one of the company’s gas manufacturing facilities that is under construction in Odessa, Texas. It is similar to one the company has proposed for Luzerne County.

Some super-exciting news to share about a massive, $6 billion petrochemical plant coming to northeastern Pennsylvania. On Friday, PA State Sen. John Yudichak, who wisely left the Democrat Party and became an Independent, announced Nacero Inc. will build a $6 billion manufacturing facility on the site of a former coal mine in Newport Township and Nanticoke in Luzerne County, PA. The plant will convert Marcellus natural gas into zero-sulfur gasoline for use in their existing cars and trucks without modification.

U.S. Supreme Court to Hear Case Limiting EPA Regulation of CO2

    November 1, 2021November 1, 2021

One of the main strategies of the Bidenistas to control every aspect of your life is to control exactly which kind of energy you can and can’t use. Part of their plan is to eliminate the use of fossil fuels by using the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and their misinterpretation of the so-called Clean Air Act in order to regulate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. CO2 is the stuff you breathe out with every breath you take. The left claims CO2 is “pollution” (causes global warming, dontchaknow) and can be controlled at the federal level by the EPA. If the EPA gets away with declaring CO2 as pollution, it can regulate and even ban the use of substances like natural gas and oil that produce CO2 when burned–or better yet, slap a big tax on it.

CNX Loses $1.5B on Hedges – CFO Unapologetic for Strategy

    click for larger version

Late last week CNX Resources issued its third quarter update. As it has done over the past few years, CNX did not issue a full update, opting to let its official SEC filing do the talking for it. What does the quarterly update show? CNX lost $1.5 billion on derivatives (hedging) during 3Q, resulting in an $873 million loss for shareholders. CFO Don Rush defended the company’s strategy by stating shareholders saw consistent returns on their investments in the company during 3Q. CNX did very little drilling–just six new southwest PA Marcellus wells during 3Q. The company completed eight wells and turned to sales eight wells.

Antero Resources, one of the biggest Marcellus/Utica drillers with 3.25 Bcfe/d (billion cubic feet equivalent per day) of production, issued its third quarter update late last week. Antero’s stock price has had an incredible run over the past year, up 462% in a single year! The company lost $834 million on derivatives/hedges during 3Q resulting in a net loss to shareholders of $549 million. The company, which drills mainly in West Virginia, has hedged 636 Bcf of natural gas at a weighted average index price of $2.58 per MMBtu through 2023 with fixed price swap positions. Beyond that, Antero officials say they will remain unhedged going forward to take advantage of higher prices.

More on EQT’s Deal to Sell Capacity on MVP, Increase REX

    November 1, 2021November 1, 2021

Last week MDN told you the news that EQT Corporation has sold part of its reserve capacity along the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) to “an undisclosed investment-grade entity for six years” (see Divorce: EQT Sells 1/2 Bcf/d of Capacity on Mountain Valley Pipe). EQT also announced an increase in its capacity along the Rockies Express (REX) pipeline to carry more of its gas to Midwestern markets. The news about MVP is not quite as simple as it seems. EQT did NOT give up sending 1/2 a Bcf of its gas along MVP as it may first appear. We need to go deeper…

Although NatGas Prices are High, New Pipes Won’t Get Built – Why?

    November 1, 2021November 1, 2021

In a normal world where freedom rings throughout the land and free enterprise and capitalism rule, if the price of a commodity like natural gas soars, new drilling would happen and new pipelines (midstream infrastructure) would get built. In a warped world where wokey leftists demand divestment from “fossil fuels” those things don’t happen. Right now we desperately need more pipelines and more drilling. Neither is happening. RBN Energy explains how lack of new pipeline capacity is holding back new drilling–and why it’s happening, particularly in the Marcellus/Utica…
