Bruce Mansfield Power Plant (click for larger version)

In the list of major energy projects announced for Pennsylvania yesterday, the Frontier Group announced plans to invest $3.2 billion to transform the former Bruce Mansfield coal power plant in Beaver County into a natural gas power station (and co-located data center), renamed the Shippingport Power Station. This project is expected to create 15,000 construction jobs and over 300 permanent jobs. But here’s the cool part. The new Shippingport Power Station will utilize approximately 800 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of natural gas produced from the Marcellus and Utica shales, all of which will be sourced from EQT Corporation. Capital Power Investing $3B in Hummel Gas-Fired Plant Shamokin Dam

    July 16, 2025July 16, 2025
Hummel Station – Capital Power (click for larger version)

In 2018, the Panda Hummel Marcellus-fired power plant in Snyder County, PA, roared to life (see Marcellus-Fired Panda Hummel Electric Plant Roars to Life in PA). Panda Hummel was one of the largest coal-to-gas conversion projects in the country, constructing a large 1,124-megawatt (MW) Marcellus gas-fired electric plant on the site of a retired coal-fired plant near Shamokin Dam in Snyder County. In April, Capital Power Corporation, based in Edmonton (Alberta), Canada, a power producer with approximately 10 gigawatts (GW) of power generation at 30 facilities across North America, announced it was buying two gas-fired power plants from LS Power, including Hummel (see Canada’s Capital Power Buying 2 PJM Gas-Fired Plants in PA, OH). At yesterday’s energy event in Pittsburgh (see our lead post today), Capital Power announced a $3 billion investment over 10 years to upgrade and expand the Hummel plant, including $2 billion dedicated to purchasing Pennsylvania gas. Antis Humiliate Themselves by Opposing $92B of PA Investment

    July 16, 2025July 16, 2025

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat put in office by labor unions and environmental lefties, showed up at yesterday’s Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit held at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, organized by PA Republican Senator Dave McCormick. President Trump attended the meeting and announced that some $92 billion had been pledged by a variety of companies (all private investment) in the state of Pennsylvania for energy projects. Much of the investment revolves around data centers and natural gas-fired power plants. Some of it was for renewable energy projects and nuclear energy projects. Because it was a Republican-organized event with Trump attending, the environmental left in PA lost its collective mind—especially because Shapiro was there, too. Data Centers are “The Next Big Thing” for M-U Natural Gas

    July 15, 2025July 15, 2025

Data centers, which are buildings full of computers crunching search queries and other requests, along with artificial intelligence (AI), which uses data centers, are closely tied to the natural gas industry. Data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, and the fastest and most scalable solution to provide that electricity is to construct gas-fired power plants. You see the connection between data centers and Marcellus/Utica natural gas. According to MDN friend Mark Caskey, founder and CEO of Steel Nation, supplying electricity for data centers is natural gas’s next big role. He should know. PA Dems Propose Bill to Add Severance Tax On Top of Impact Fee

    July 15, 2025July 15, 2025

You gotta hand it to Pennsylvania Democrats. They LOVE LOVE LOVE to tax other people’s money—especially companies and industries that they hate, like the state’s oil and gas industry. On July 8, PA State Senator Art Haywood (Democrat from Philadelphia) introduced PA Senate Bill (SB) 910, which slaps a 6.5% severance tax on the gross production of all oil and natural gas produced in the state. However, the bill goes further by repealing the provision in the 2012 Act 13 law that states that if a severance tax is ever implemented, the existing impact fee would be eliminated. In other words, Haywood’s bill eliminates the provision to end the impact fee, meaning the impact fee would remain in place. So, drillers would be taxed twice for the same thing. Fortunately, the bill is DOA in the Senate. Read More “PA Dems Propose Bill to Add Severance Tax On Top of Impact Fee”

CA Company Locates in Lycoming, PA to Build Hydrogen Storage Tanks

    July 15, 2025July 15, 2025

Verne, Inc., a California-based energy company, announced last week that it will open its first manufacturing plant in the Marcellus Energy Park near Muncy, Lycoming County, PA. Verne developed a process to increase the density of hydrogen by storing the gas in a cold and compressed state, making it more efficient to transport in larger volumes. The new PA facility (which should be up and running in nine months) will build the storage tanks for this cold hydrogen. The hydrogen will be transported via truck to power data centers, drilling sites, construction sites, and more. Read More “CA Company Locates in Lycoming, PA to Build Hydrogen Storage Tanks”

Pennsylvania Energy Industry Losing Out to Ohio Due to Red Tape

    July 15, 2025July 15, 2025

The media fuss is hard to miss about today’s Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit being held at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. PA Senator Dave McCormick organized the event. Among the attendees will be President Trump, several cabinet secretaries, and other White House officials. Much of the buzz is around $90 billion in AI and energy investments expected to be announced. In preparation for the big event, a roundtable was held yesterday at CNX headquarters in Washington County, PA, to discuss clearing away permitting obstacles and red tape to help PA realize some (if not most) of that $90 billion in investments. PA DEP Continues PR Campaign Touting SPEEDy Permits

    July 15, 2025July 15, 2025

The more the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) beats the drum to say it has solved the slooooooow permitting process in the state, the more hollow it rings. It seems like every other week, the DEP issues a press release to announce it has almost cleared all of the agency’s backlog of permits. Another such pronouncement was issued yesterday. The DEP claims its permit backlog has been reduced by 98% since November 2023, decreasing the backlog from over 2,400 permit applications to fewer than 50. Good for them. Community Pushback on 2 Planned Kentucky Gas-Fired Power Plants

    July 15, 2025July 15, 2025

Kentucky has experienced unprecedented economic growth in recent years, similar to other southern states. Data centers are looking to Kentucky for future expansion. Last fall, Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E) and Kentucky Utilities Company (KU), both part of PPL Corporation, forecasted in their Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) the need for additional power generation due to the expected influx of data centers and economic development across their service territories (see Kentucky Utilities Want to Build 2 New NatGas Power Plants). The companies floated a plan to build two new natural gas combined-cycle generation units—one in 2030 and another in 2031. Those plans got real in March when the companies filed applications to build the two plants (see Kentucky Utilities File to Build Two 645-MW Gas-Fired Power Plants). It’s not going to be an easy path for LG&E/KU. At a public hearing held last night, residents pushed back against the plan. BH U.S. Rig Count Down 11th Week in a Row @ 537; M-U Even @ 35

    July 14, 2025July 14, 2025

The Baker Hughes U.S. rig count has been hemorrhaging for 11 consecutive weeks. Last week, the U.S. rig count declined by another two rigs to its lowest level since October 2021, ending the week at 537 active rigs. You have to go back to the dark days of the pandemic, July 2020, for the previous 11+ consecutive weeks of decline in the rig count. The Marcellus/Utica stayed even (after falling by one two weeks ago) at a combined 35 active rigs. There were 23 rigs targeting the Marcellus and 12 rigs targeting the Utica last week. Wyalusing LNG Plant is Dead; Gas-Fired Power for Data Ctr Replaces

    July 14, 2025October 27, 2025

We had heard rumors that the LNG liquefaction plant planned by New Fortress Energy (NFE) for Wyalusing in Bradford County, PA, was being dropped in favor of an alternative. Namely, a gas-fired power plant project. We can now confirm that the rumors are true. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) published notice in the July 12 PA Bulletin inviting comments on an air permit for the proposed 248 megawatt (MW) Wyalusing Energy Center, a natural gas-fired power plant in Wyalusing Township, to be used to power a data center. The power plant permit is for the exact location where the LNG liquefaction plant was planned. Read More “Wyalusing LNG Plant is Dead; Gas-Fired Power for Data Ctr Replaces”

Penneco Appeals Plum Twp Rejection of Second Injection Well

    July 14, 2025July 14, 2025

Penneco Environmental Solutions wants to build a second wastewater injection well in Plum Borough (Allegheny County), PA, next to an existing injection well. Penneco’s first wastewater injection well in Plum finally opened for business in mid-2021, overcoming all sorts of smears, slanders, and lawsuits by the enviro-left (see Plum Boro Injection Well in SWPA Now Open for Business!). In September 2021, Penneco announced plans to build a second wastewater injection well in Plum, located next to the first one (see 2nd Shale Wastewater Injection Well Planned for Plum Boro in SWPA). Nearly four years later, the Plum Borough zoning board rejected the request, prompting Penneco to say it would appeal the decision to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas (see Plum (PA) Zoning Bd. Rejects 2nd Injection Well, Appeal Coming). Penneco did just that, recently filing its appeal. Read More “Penneco Appeals Plum Twp Rejection of Second Injection Well”

VA Court Rejects Town Zoning Board Attempt to Block Pipeline

    July 14, 2025July 14, 2025

A pipeline court case to celebrate (we take our victories where we can find them). Washington Gas Light Company (WGL) seeks to install a 24-inch-diameter high-pressure natural gas pipeline through the Pimmit Hills neighborhood in Fairfax County, Virginia. Fairfax County is a suburb of Washington, D.C. The County Zoning Board of Appeals claimed the project needs a “special exemption” issued by the County Board of Supervisors (nine of the Supervisors are Democrats, one is a Republican). The Court of Appeals for Virginia knocked that bogus claim down. Read More “VA Court Rejects Town Zoning Board Attempt to Block Pipeline”
