VA Pipeline Rally: Protesters Say Global Warming Causes Hurricanes
Earlier this year a poll of Virginians found 62% of them support building the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) project in the state (see New Poll: 62% of Virginians Support Mountain Valley Pipeline). MVP is a $3.5 billion, 301-mile pipeline that will run from Wetzel County, WV to the Transco Pipeline in Pittsylvania County, VA. The project, which filed an official application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in October 2015, will be built by EQT, NextEra Energy and several other partners including WGL. Even though the vast majority of Virginians want the pipeline, there are always a few, typically from Big Green groups like the Sierra Club, who oppose it. Opponents of MVP, and another project, Dominion’s Atlantic Coast Pipeline, held rallies on Wednesday at seven Virginia Dept. of Environmental Quality locations scattered across the state. About 50 people gathered at the Roanoke location. The rally was instructive. Given the safety record of pipelines, we always wonder what excuses these people can possibly have to oppose these projects? The answer always comes back to one, core motivation: they irrationally hate all fossil fuels. We know! You’re tired of us repeating this like a broken record. Well they did it. Yesterday at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC), representatives for the five voting members voted to begin the process of formalizing a permanent ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin. It wasn’t unexpected, but it was hotly contested–by both sides in the debate. As we’ve previously chronicled, the DRBC is composed of five voting members: the governors of Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The governors all sent people to represent them at the meeting, with clear instructions. The three Democrat governors–Tom Wolf (PA), Andrew Cuomo (NY), and John Carney (DE) all voted in favor of a resolution to take the next step in the process of a permanent ban, voting to adopt a draft resolution MDN previously shared (see 
We spotted an article that says clergy and lay people from the United Church of Christ in Robeson County, North Carolina will hold a prayer vigil today. A liberal pastor has decided to show up at the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to pray against approval for Dominion’s $5 billion, 594-mile Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP)–a natural gas pipeline that will stretch from West Virginia through Virginia and into North Carolina. The DEQ is scheduled to announce a decision about granting the project a necessary permit, at a meeting on Sept. 19th. Which got us to thinking. Perhaps we should pray for the pastor and lay people who will show up to pray today. Here’s our prayer…
We recently spotted an article written by Marian L. Tupy, editor of HumanProgress.org and a senior policy analyst at the Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity. He specializes in “globalization and global well-being, and the political economy of Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.” He’s a smart guy–and a policy wonk. Tupy had an interesting experience when he gave a speech to college students in Ottawa, Canada. Somebody in the audience asked Tupy a question about climate change (i.e. man-made global warming). Tupy, who considers himself a “lukewarmer” (someone who thinks man may contribute to global warming, but the jury is still out on how much), cautioned the students against excessive alarmism when it comes to climate change. Until that point the students in the crowd were Tupy fans. But when Tupy had the temerity to suggest perhaps we ought to look more closely at the science before jumping to conclusions, they turned on him in an instant–like an angry mob. Which is illustrative, and disheartening. It’s disheartening that many of our college students have been mis-educated–we’d call it brainwashed–into denying science and the scientific process. Because students today have not studied and do not understand history–recent history of the past 70-80 years–they are repeating it, eagerly rushing into totalitarianism under the guise of environmentalism…
Turns out the rumors were true. The Delaware River Basin Commission has now been totally corrupted by Big Green groups and plans to vote tomorrow, Sept. 13, on a resolution that begins the process of implementing a permanent ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin. This is not the end, but the beginning of the end, of any hope for landowners in Wayne and Pike counties in PA. Their property rights will (like those of us who live in New York) be stripped away. Except in Wayne and Pike, it will be a permanent stripping away. At least in NY we have the hope of one day ejecting Lord Cuomo from office and reversing the ongoing moratorium. However, even though this should be a total win for radicals like THE Delaware Riverkeeper (aka Maya van Rossum), the radicals are STILL not happy! Can you believe it?! Part of the proposed resolution and rulemaking to follow will consider allowing frack wastewater disposal within the DRBC’s fiefdom. That just can’t stand according to Maya and her rad pals. Radicals from the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) say they will stage massive protests at several Virginia Department of Environmental Quality offices next week to protest against two Marcellus/Utica pipeline projects: the $5 billion Atlantic Coast Pipeline and $3.5 billion Mountain Valley Pipeline. Both projects have large segments crossing Virginia. CCAN says up to 1,000 people (mostly brainwashed college kids) will turn up to behave badly at DEQ office sites–using sit-ins, “prayer circles” (although Whom they pray to is unspecified) and sidewalk “rallies.” The DEQ is getting ready for the miscreants. The aim of the protests is to convince the DEQ to deny water crossing permits for the two pipeline projects. The DEQ has decided to let the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers handle the stream crossing evaluation, which doesn’t sit well with the radicals. They’re demanding the DEQ reassert authority in issuing the permits. Of course, the only outcome the radicals will accept is if the DEQ decides NOT to issue the permits. Is mob rule coming to the Old Dominion?…

Acting like 5-year olds who have been told not to do something, but defiantly do it anyway, several homeowners in a housing development in Delaware County who were specifically instructed not to interfere with clearing work for the Mariner East 2 Pipeline in a Philadelphia suburb. The homeowners intentionally crossed a clearly-marked line into the construction zone, putting themselves at risk. The homeowners, who object to the pipeline, wanted to “push the buttons” of the workers at the construction site. The workers promptly called the cops and of course, work could not commence while the police interviewed everyone to see what’s what. In the end, no arrests were made. The homeowners were on jointly-owned housing development property. Their lawyer told them they could enter the work area as long as they didn’t stop the work being done. One of the

A Washington Post article published yesterday appears to contain at least some truth–about a group of Lancaster nuns. We’ve previously written about a group we call Sisters of the Corn. They stuck a few wooden park benches in the middle of a corn field that they own (leased to a local farmer), and called it a “chapel” so they can claim the planned Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline that will go through that field violates their so-called religious freedom. We have more evidence that a so-called “Conservative” environmental group, calling themselves Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship, is anything but conservative. Let’s strip the euphemisms away, shall we? Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship is a group of liberal Democrats pretending to be conservative Republicans. It is a pretense. A lie. How do we know? It all goes back to the budget bill passed by the Pennsylvania Senate. Republicans, which control both the House and Senate in Pennsylvania, passed an unbalanced budget of $32 billion. Problem is, there’s only $30 billion of projected revenue. So after passing the spending part of the budget, the legislature (i.e. Republicans) now have to “come up with” $2 billion to cover the difference. The pressure has been intense to punish the successful Marcellus industry by stealing even more of their money (PA already takes an overly generous portion of their profits). Senate Republicans caved to the pressure and floated a spending plan that includes a severance tax (see
