Oil & Gas Industry LOVES New House Speaker Mike Johnson – We Do Too

    October 27, 2023October 27, 2023
Mike Johnson – Speaker of the House

While the newly elected Speaker of U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson (from Louisiana), is relatively unknown to the oil and gas industry, the industry likes what it sees in Johnson. We do, too. Did you catch Johnson’s first media interview since winning the Speakership? It was a live interview last night with Sean Hannity on Fox News (watch it below). What an interview! While he didn’t speak much about oil and gas issues, it was clear from his responses that he is favorable to the fossil fuel industry. It was also clear he’s a true-blue conservative and has his head screwed on right.

    22 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Oct 16 – 22

    October 27, 2023October 27, 2023

New shale permits issued for Oct 16 – 22 in the Marcellus/Utica rebounded. There were 22 new permits issued last week, versus 14 the week before. Last week’s permit tally included 17 new permits in Pennsylvania, 5 new permits in Ohio, and no new permits in West Virginia. Chesapeake Energy was the top permittee for the week, drawing 7 permits between two counties in PA: Susquehanna and Wyoming (northeastern part of the state). EQT had 5 permits across two PA counties: Greene and Washington (southwestern part of the state). And Ascent Resources had 5 permits in Ohio in two counties: Guernsey and Harrison.

Longer Laterals Means Range Resources Drilling Fewer Wells in 2023

    October 26, 2023October 26, 2023

Range Resources Corporation, the very first company to drill a shale well targeting the Marcellus Shale layer in Pennsylvania (in 2004), issued its third quarter update yesterday. In prior guidance from earlier this year, Range said it would drill between 60-65 wells in 2023. However, with this latest update, that number was revised down to 51 new wells in this latest update. The reason for drilling fewer wells, according to the Range officials, is that the company is drilling longer wells, achieving the same amount of lateral feet with fewer holes in the ground. Even though fewer new wells are coming, the ones that are drilled produce more.

CNX Brings 4 Wells Online Drilled Under Pittsburgh Airport Runway

    October 26, 2023January 26, 2024

Yesterday, CNX Resources issued its third quarter 2023 update. Even with a crash in the price of natural gas this year, CNX generated $21 million in net profit during 3Q23 versus losing $427 million in 3Q22. The company also managed to generate $19 million in free cash flow in 3Q23. Of particular interest for us is that of the 13 new wells brought online during the quarter, four of them were drilled under runways at Pittsburgh International Airport. CNX has a public-private partnership with the airport to drill wells on airport property. The original plan called for 45 wells, but as of last year, only 14 wells had been drilled (see CNX, Pittsburgh Airport Cut New Deal to Drill More Wells). By our count, these four new wells boost the total to 18 wells.

DC Circuit Denies Anti Request to Block MVP Construction in Va.

    October 26, 2023October 26, 2023

Shrill antis have their answer from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (D.C. Circuit) in a request to (once again) shut down construction on the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP): NO! A small group of uppity Virginia landowners don’t want MVP crossing their horse pastures, leaving a mark. So they conspired with Big Green lawyers in a lawsuit challenging the right of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to use eminent domain to build pipelines across private land.

EIA Says Low Price for NatGas Led to Crash in Rig Count 2023

    October 26, 2023October 26, 2023

The Baker Hughes rig count has crashed this year compared to last year’s numbers. A few months ago, we began to chronicle the weekly rig count to keep track of this alarming situation (which we post about every Monday). U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) analysts have taken notice of the crashing rig count and asked themselves: Why? It may seem obvious, but EIA points out in a new post on its Today in Energy website that the crash in the natural gas rig count directly correlates to the crash in the price of natural gas.

Worcester Resiliency Upgrade project map (click for larger version)

According to Jeff Householder, CEO of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (not to be confused with Chesapeake Energy), “Demand for natural gas continues to increase in our Delmarva service territories, where our customer additions are above national averages.” For those unfamiliar, Delmarva is the peninsula along the East Coast where the states of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia share borders. Chesapeake Utilities (a local utility company) operates a subsidiary called Eastern Shore Natural Gas Company. Eastern Shore recently filed a request with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to build an LNG storage facility in Bishopville, Maryland, called the Worcester Resiliency Upgrade project.

Republicans Push Back Against Biden PHMSA’s LNG-by-Rail Ban

    October 26, 2023October 26, 2023

On Sept. 1, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), part of the Biden Dept. of Transportation, issued a federal rule suspending a 2020 authorization of LNG transportation in rail tank cars granted under the Trump administration (see LNG-by-Rail Officially on Hold with PHMSA, Agency Will “Study” It). The suspension (ban) will remain in effect until either a permanent rule regarding LNG rail tank car transportation is proposed and finalized — or June 30, 2025. You can expect it will be the latter. Some 25 Republicans in the U.S. Senate and House sent a letter to the PHMSA Deputy Administrator Tristan Brown, reminding him that the agency is a safety agency, not an environmental agency, lecturing him to reverse the block on LNG-by-rail forthwith.

Company Seeks to Lease New York Mineral & Pore Rights for Flat $10

    October 25, 2023October 25, 2023

A company called Southern Tier CO2 to Clean Energy Solutions, based in Binghamton, NY (where MDN is located), is sending fliers to landowners in Broome, Tioga, and Chemung counties (along the border with Pennsylvania, where there is no doubt large amounts of Marcellus and Utica gas beneath the ground) inviting landowners to sign up for what appears to be an exciting opportunity to sell gas rights. The flier (below) and company website say the company plans to use carbon dioxide (CO2) to (a) store it underground, but also (b) use it to extract natural gas from underground and then (c) either sell the gas via pipeline or burn it to produce electricity. The technology envisioned is an alternative to fracking. Will it work? And, will it be profitable for landowners?

Yesterday, officials with the Dept. of Energy Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) and those involved with the West Virginia-led Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) project held a virtual meeting discussing where the ARCH2 project stands and the long-term effects of the project in the communities near where the nodes of the hub will be located. In something of a surprise, a previously undisclosed but related planned facility by Air Liquide to provide hydrogen as a potential fuel source for long-haul trucking was mentioned during the meeting. The Air Liquide facility will be somewhere in the Pittsburgh region (on the PA side of the border).

How MVP’s Latest Delay to 1Q24 Affects Project’s Partners, Customers

    October 25, 2023October 25, 2023

Last week, MDN brought you the news that the 303-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) will not be completely done and online until sometime in the first quarter of 2024 (see Equitrans Admits the Obvious – MVP Won’t be Online Until 2024). In addition to this further delay, Equitrans, the company building MVP, said the cost has gone up again — to $7.2 billion. Equitrans is not the only owner (investor) in MVP. How does this latest delay affect Equitrans, its partners, and its customers?

PA Republican Legislators “All-In” on Regional Hydrogen Hubs

    October 25, 2023October 25, 2023
Senator Camera Bartolotta, R-Washington, speaks in support of hydrogen hub development in Pennsylvania on October 24, 2023 at the State Capitol.

Five Pennsylvania Republican State Senators held a press conference yesterday at the State Capitol in Harrisburg to proclaim their love and support for hydrogen projects in light of the recent Biden Hydrogen Hub Hunger Games announcement. As we’ve been covering for over a week, seven projects were selected to receive a collective $7 billion in funding from the Bidenistas, including the WV-led Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) project (see Hydrogen Hub Winners Announced – WV Takes Prize in M-U Region). Pennsylvania will get a small (but meaningful) piece of the action as part of ARCH2. PA will also participate in a second hydrogen hub project — the Delaware-led Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2) project. The Republican Senators like PA’s prospects for both ARCH2 and MACH2.

TVA Proposes Adding 6 Peaker Gas Units (200 MW) Near Memphis

    October 25, 2023October 25, 2023

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a federally-owned electric utility corporation in the U.S. TVA’s service area covers all of Tennessee, portions of Alabama, Mississippi, and Kentucky, and small areas of Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. TVA is the sixth-largest power supplier and the largest public utility in the U.S. Two years ago, MDN told you that TVA is spending over $1 billion to replace six coal-fired plants with natgas-fired turbines (see TVA Investing $1B to Build New Natgas-Fired Electric Plants). We’re not sure if this is part of that $1 billion effort, but earlier this month, TVA posted a notice in the Federal Register with a plan to build six new gas-fired peaker (on-demand) units at the existing Allen Combustion Turbine (ACT) site, located in Shelby County, Tennessee, about five miles southwest of the City of Memphis.

IEO 2023 Predicts Fossil Fuels Provide 70% of World Energy in 2050

    October 25, 2023October 25, 2023

A few weeks ago, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) issued its annual International Energy Outlook for 2023. The last time we highlighted this report was in 2021. At that time the EIA (even though controlled by the Bidenistas) predicted that by 2050 the world’s energy supplies will still mostly come from fossil fuels — some 70% from fossil energy, to be exact (see Biden EIA Predicts Fossil Fuels Provide 70% of World Energy in 2050). The Bidenistas have made it much harder to locate a similar breakdown in this latest report, but we’ve done it. And guess what? The ratio is still the same! EIA says by 2050, 70% of all the world’s energy will come from fossil fuels. Surprised? We aren’t.
