New Junk Science Claims PA Fracking Leads to Premature Births

junk scienceIn January 2014, anti-drilling “researchers” jumped the gun at the annual meeting of the American Economic Association in Philadelphia by announcing “preliminary” results of research in which they claim they can show a connection between shale drilling and low birth weights in newborn babies in Pennsylvania (see Another Flawed Fracking/Health Study Emerges…from Economics Conf). The “researchers” quickly walked back the announcement they made at the conference because, well, because they hadn’t actually done the research yet (see Researchers Backpedal on Bloomberg Story about Fracking & Babies). Another group of “researchers” claims to have done the research (same set of data) and published a new study along the same lines last week in the journal Epidemiology. The conclusion? The closer you live to shale drilling activity in PA, the more likely your baby will born prematurely. The study, called “Unconventional Natural Gas Development and Birth Outcomes in Pennsylvania, USA,” was partially funded by the ultra-liberal Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and subjected to a sham peer review process to give it the veneer of respectability…

Sierra Club Pres. Destroyed Under Questioning about Global Warming

empty headWe’ve written plenty over the years about the silly nutters who make up the Sierra Club. It’s a joke of an organization, and that was evident for the world to see earlier this week when U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz questioned the president of the Sierra Club, Aaron Mair, at a Congressional hearing. Using simple, direct and non-bullying questions, Cruz exposed Mair as an empty-headed fraud only capable of regurgitating a few canned responses to Cruz’s questions about man-made global warming. The standard line was to repeat over and over that “97 percent of scientists agree” on man-made global warming. That particular statistic comes from a small, flawed study of hand-picked scientists back in 2013. Mair and others hope by repeating the lie over and over enough times, everyone will believe it. Cruz didn’t fall for it. There is a video (below) that you MUST watch. It exposes Mair as a fool–not able to defend his own statements about global warming. Nearly every question Cruz asked Mair would have to lean back to have his advisers feed him the answers. Mair is an empty suit–nobody home upstairs. Empty-headed. It’s a beautiful example of the entire organization, showing it as nothing more than a political advocacy group, ignorant of real science. Yes, we do revisit the important topic of global warming from time to time because the issue is at the heart of the movement to ban fracking and end the use of all fossil fuels–a dangerously naive and stupid movement supported by organizations like the Sierra Club…

OH Judge Rules in Favor of NEXUS Survey, Ticks Off the CORNballs

cornballsOn Tuesday a Medina County, OH judge ruled that the NEXUS pipeline does have a right to enter private land to survey it for possible routes for the pipeline. The judge said Ohio laws allow private companies to survey land for eventual appropriation (including eminent domain) as long as the company can prove it is an energy or utility company. The judge said the law is quite clear on that point–plain and simple to understand. The judge’s decision didn’t sit too well with the CORNballs of CORN (Coalition to Reroute Nexus pipeline). We’ve written plenty about CORN and their effort to “reroute” the NEXUS (see our CORN stories here). Although the group states their aim is to reroute the NEXUS away from northern counties in Ohio, what they’re really trying to do is simply stop the pipeline altogether. Every legal and political maneuver they’ve tried has failed. But that doesn’t deter the CORN faithful. They’re baaaack! This time the CORNballs are taking their fight to the state legislature, hoping they can get a law passed favorable to their cause…

Actor Mark Ruffalo Asks PA Gov Wolf to Enact Drilling Moratorium

cluelessAs a general rule, professional actors are some of the most clueless people on the planet. Mark Ruffalo, one of the most clueless of the clueless, was honored at a Pennsylvania college because of it. Ruffalo was honored by Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA (near Harrisburg) with the Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Walters Prize for his environmental cluelessism, er, a, activism. Hey, Ruffalo does a decent job with acting (we enjoy the Avengers movies)–we’ll grant him that. But have you ever noticed the lights are all on with Ruffalo–but nobody’s actually home? Anywho, the awarded Ruffalo, who calls himself “an accidental environmentalist,” will make a trip to Harrisburg today to deliver a letter from “100 organizations” and “25,000 concerned citizens” to Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf. The letter will ask Wolf to immediately enact a fracking moratorium in the state. What…radical? No way that will ever happen? Pipe dream? You may have forgetten (but we didn’t) that the Pennsylvania State Democrat Party, before they nominated Wolf to be their leader, adopted an official plank in the party platform calling for the same identical thing (see PA Democrat Party Votes to End Marcellus Shale Drilling Statewide). The clueless Ruffalo is asking for the same thing the Dems have already said they want…

Antis Continue Campaign Against Off-Shore LNG Terminal Near NY/NJ

shoot yourself in the footA story we first brought you back in March continues to play out. Liberty Natural Gas filed a plan back in 2010, prior to the Marcellus Shale revolution, to construct an off-shore LNG import (not export) facility off the coast of New York and New Jersey–in the ocean. A floating LNG facility called the Port Ambrose project. A pipeline would run from the off-shore terminal to Jones Beach, NY and from there would connect to a Transco pipeline lateral. Anti-fossil fuelers who hate and oppose all fracking (indeed all fossil fuel use) are also opposed to this project. So what did Liberty Natural Gas do? They tried to convince the antis that importing gas from Trinidad is better than using nasty, evil, vile “fracked” gas (see Liberty Says “Non-Fracked” Trinidad Gas Better than Marcellus Gas). Antis aren’t falling for it. In fact, in something of a funny reversal, antis are now using the argument that since we have so much fracked gas in the country (the very thing they irrationally hate), there isn’t a need for the Port Ambrose terminal. You know, this is the one time we’re in agreement with them!…

Disaster at NY DEC: Cuomo Nominates Anti-Driller to Helm Agency

    Basil Seggos
Basil Seggos – Nominated by Cuomo to head the DEC

It appears that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is attempting to shove the teetering oil and gas industry in the state over a metaphorical cliff and put it completely out of business. Last Friday Cuomo nominated an anti-driller, Basil Seggos, to be the next Secretary of the Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC)–the organization that oversees oil and gas drilling in the state. Seggos will replace another anti-driller, Joe Martens, complicit in Cuomo’s decision to ban fracking. Seggos will continue and likely expand the same policies begun by Martens. Seggos previously worked for seven years as the chief investigator and lawyer (chief litigator) for the radical environmental organization Riverkeeper. That alone should disqualify him from serving in such an important position–but in New York, the inmates run the asylum. You can tell Seggos will be a disaster (for the oil and gas industry) in his new position by the list of anti-drilling organizations falling all over themselves to congratulate Cuomo on the appointment. Seggos’ appointment is another in a string of disastrous decisions by the corrupt Andrew Cuomo administration…

Anti-Fossil Fuelers Disrupt Shale Event, Won’t Listen to Science

fingers in earsWhat is it about some anti-drillers (actually, anti-fossil fuelers) that makes them closed-minded and unreasonable? A Colorado research chemist and two technology students from Singapore set out to answer the question of whether or not shale oil should be produced. All three attended a 10-week intensive course focusing on Utah’s vast oil reserves (no, this story is not about the Marcellus/Utica per se, but it is illustrative nonetheless). Although the three had intended on submitting a research paper at the 35th Annual Oil Shale Symposium being held yesterday and today in Salt Lake City, the research paper ended up being a 116-page e-book they’re selling on Amazon, called “Oil Shale: Treasure Trove or Pandora’s Box.” The authors, with no preconceived outcome before taking the 10-week course, objectively conclude that extracting shale oil in Utah or other locations “is not going to be some sort of environmental Armageddon. That is not true.” Protesters at the event, however, don’t want to hear reasonable talk. A group of anti-fossil fuelers, rather than sit and listen to the evidence and keep and open mind, rose during the event–a private (not public) event–and illegally disrupted the event with chanting and singing. Yep, stick you fingers in your ears and holler “la la la la, I can’t hear you!” instead of open your mind and use your little gray cells to try and comprehend the miracle that is fracking and the miracle that is fossil fuel energy…

Cabot O&G Gives a Tour to Big Green Group – Trout Unlimited

change heartsSometimes you have to reach out to the other side (i.e. the unreasonable enemy of fossil fuels) to try and convince them that the oil and gas industry is not Satanic. We don’t bother with trying to convince them (lost cause in our opinion), but kudos to those who have the patience to try it. Case in point: Cabot Oil & Gas recently hosted a delegation from the Big Green/radical group Trout Unlimited (TU). TU, you may recall, is the sad story of a once great group co-opted into being a radical green group (see Trout Unlimited, Other Groups Outted as Radical Green Groups). That is, at least some of the leaders of TU are in the pocket of Big Green. Perhaps it’s different with some in the rank and file. TU held its 2015 annual meeting in Scranton, PA this year, so Cabot invited delegate from across the country who were attending to tour some of Cabot’s operations in nearby Susquehanna County, PA. MDN friend Bill desRosiers from Cabot files the following report…

Tiny Protest in Trenton, NJ Against PennEast Pipeline is “News”?

newsSome 35 anti-fossil fuel wackos, apparently with no jobs, show up during a slow news day at the Statehouse in Trenton, NJ to protest the PennEast Pipeline and news outlets report it as a major story, implying there’s a huge movement against the pipeline. What about the 366,500+ residents who also live in Mercer County and who aren’t opposed to the PennEast and who didn’t turn out to protest it? Is that worth a story? Apparently not. Of course this tiny protest wasn’t spontaneous–it was organized, planned, hyped and paid for by nutty Sierra Clubbers and THE Delaware Riverkeeper (Maya van Rossum)…

EPA Visits Pittsburgh for Final Hearing on Methane Emissions Law

what you believeYour beliefs matter. For example, if you believe in the fairy tale of man-made global warming (see Inconvenient Global Warming Fact: Avg Temp Hasn’t Risen in 18 Yrs), then you will attempt to force the greatest country on earth–the United States–to abandon the extraction and burning of fossil fuels. It is that erroneous belief that animates the Kool Aid drinkers in the so-called environmental movement. If you’re a real creep, you try to prey on the unthinking public’s fears that the planet will bake and your health is at risk by continued extraction of fossil fuels. The federal EPA is preying on those fears with their latest power grab to illegally regulate the oil and gas industry through the back door by creating new, unlegislated laws to reduce so-called methane emissions from oil and gas drilling. Regulation of oil and gas drilling is Constitutionally left to the individual states. The EPA wants to corrupt that and was in Pittsburgh yesterday for a final public hearing on their draconian new unlegislated laws on methane emissions. The EPA got an earful–from both anti-drilling wackos and from the oil and gas industry…

Sad: NC County Passes 3-Year Moratorium on Fracking

heartbreakerIt’s heartbreaking, but not surprising, to see residents in a North Carolina make the same mistakes made by residents in New York State. Monday night the Stokes County (NC) Board of Commissioners voted to enact a three-year moratorium on potential shale drilling in the county. Well-meaning but completely ignorant residents agitated and cajoled the commissioners into voting for no drilling. Stokes, located in northern NC, is part of the Dan River sub-basin, which in turn is part of the larger Triassic Basin. Earlier this year the state cleared the way for fracking to begin (see Triassic Park: North Carolina Becomes 34th State to Frack Shale). The ignorant agitators are happy with the moratorium as a first step, but ultimately (like New York) hope they can ban fracking altogether…

NEPA Democrat Congressman Targets FERC in Effort to Stop Pipelines

    Matt Cartwright
    Congressman Matt Cartwright – Democrat

An anti-drilling Democrat Congressman from Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District (Wilkes-Barre area), U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, continues a campaign targeting the Marcellus Shale industry for extinction–an industry that employs many of his constituents and benefits all of his constituents with lower natural gas and electricity prices. Cartwright and other anti-drilling members of Congress have recently changed strategies and are now attacking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) hoping to slow down and stop new pipeline construction. Cartwright sent a letter to the Inspector General for the Dept. of Energy (under which FERC sits) asking the IG to instigate a witch hunt against FERC with the aim of getting FERC to slow down its already molasses-slow permitting process for new pipelines. Cartwright and other members of Congress (from New England) hope they can bully FERC into abandoning its stated charter to dispassionately and without political influence evaluate pipeline projects based solely on their environmental impact to the local communities through which they run…

Landowners’ Countersuit Against Martians Tossed by Obama Judge

miscarriage of justiceNOTE: MDN received a note from a subscriber (and lawyer) who has appeared before Judge Horan several times and believes our characterization is unfair and unwarranted. Indeed, the lawyer says Horan is “certainly not a radical” and has rendered industry-favorable decisions on several occasions. We appreciate it when subscribers take time to point out when our gut reaction, usually spot on, may not be. We want to be fair and not impugn someone’s reputation without cause.

Once again justice has been corrupted in a corrupt Pennsylvania court. It’s A.O.K. for four local residents (Martians) and two tax-exempt non-profit groups from the opposite side of the state to bring lawsuits to stop legal Marcellus drilling in Butler County, PA, costing Butler County taxpayers in excess of $35,000 in legal fees (see ACLU Asks County Judge to Toss Lawsuit Against Litigious Martians). The Martians have children in the Mars School District located 3/4 of a mile away from the proposed Rex Energy drilling site. Never mind other school districts in the state have allowed drilling ON CAMPUS. A dozen landowners in Middlesex and Adams Townships that want drilling to commence counter-sued the Martians and the Big Green groups for holding up a legal process (see Shoe Now on Other Foot: Landowners Sue Martian Anti-Drillers). Butler County Judge Marilyn J. Horan (Democrat) has tossed the landowners’ counter-suit out of the nearest ivory tower window. That’s “justice” for you in Butler County, PA. You may be interested to know that Judge Horan is a radical/activist judge, recently nominated by President Barack Hussein Obama to become a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania–no doubt because of her radical views…

Correcting Pope Francis’s Mistaken Utterances on the Environment

Pope Francis - No Fracking SupporterWe don’t like bashing Pope Francis–honest. We have a very healthy respect for the Catholic Church. But Pope Francis is a Marxist–and he’s pedaling Marxist dogma instead of Christian dogma and he needs to be called out for it. During the Pope’s visit to the U.S. this past week, mainstream liberal media went wall to wall with the visit–euphoric over his pronouncements on the environment and his belief in the fairy tale of man-made global warming. Pope Francis is a big hit with godless atheists in this country–which should tell you something. We spotted a refutation of the Pope’s misguided philosophies when it comes to dumping fossil fuels, offered by the bright minds at The Heartland Institute. We found their comments to be spot on and the best possible refutation and correction of the errors delivered by il Papa during his U.S. visit…

Riverkeeper/Others Demand PA Gov Wolf Stop All Fracking/Pipelines

we demandTHE Delaware Riverkeeper, Maya van Rossum, and a bunch of her anti-fossil fuel pals delivered a letter on Wednesday to America’s most liberal governor, PA Gov. Tom Wolf, asking him to immediately suspend all further Marcellus drilling in the state and while he’s at it, stop building any new pipelines. They also “demand” (their words) that Wolf shut down his Pipeline Infrastructure Task Force which he created back in May (see Disaster on the Horizon: PA Gov Wolf Creates Pipeline Task Force). The letter states, “Our homes, neighborhoods, water, air, land, precious environment and the health and safety of our families are threatened by each new shale gas well drilled and fracked, each new mile of pipeline or pipeline expansion, each new compressor station, natural gas power plant, storage facility, LNG facility, or processing facility currently being proposed and built throughout the East Coast. Drilling and fracking operations in Pennsylvania and throughout the Marcellus Shale are driving that build-out of gas infrastructure.” These people are full of Barbara Streisand up to their eyeballs. Pathological liars. Below we have a press release from the so-called 115 organizations signing the letter along with a copy of the letter itself sent to Wolf…

PA DEP Sec. Quigley Wants to Create “Environmental Justice” Office

what does that meanThe PennFuture Secretary of the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection, John Quigley, continues to promote a hard-left agenda inside a once-great agency. Any time a Democrat like Quigley pairs the word “justice” with another word, like “environmental”, you know it’s a bad idea. Quigley is promoting the concept of creating an “office of environmental justice” within the DEP. What does that even mean? Is Quigley implying we currently have environmental “injustice” running rampant through the Commonwealth? Quigley also wants to use revenue raised from an obscenely high severance tax on Marcellus Shale drilling to fund more DEP inspectors to hang out at drill pads. Must be Quigley didn’t get the memo from Wolf that ALL of the severance tax money, if Wolf is lucky enough to get such a tax passed (very much in doubt), has already been promised in a quid pro quo agreement to teachers’ unions that helped get him elected…
