EQT Sells Remaining Nonop Assets in NE Pa. for $1.25 Billion

    October 30, 2024October 30, 2024

As part of its third quarter update, EQT Corporation, now the second-largest natural gas producer in the U.S., dropped the bombshell that it has completely divested from the remaining non-operated wells it owns in northeastern Pennsylvania, selling the assets to Norwegian company Equinor (formerly known as Statoil) for $1.25 billion. You may recall in April, EQT did a deal with Equinor to swap land in Pennsylvania and Ohio, plus receiving $500 million from Equinor to sweeten the pot (see Equinor Swaps Acreage with EQT in PA & OH, Exits Operated US Shale). Yesterday’s deal is for the remainder of the wells where EQT doesn’t own the full rights but only a portion of them and doesn’t run the operations. The wells are majority-owned and operated by Expand Energy, the successor to Chesapeake Energy, following the merger of Chesapeake with Southwestern Energy. Blackstone Seeks to Buy Pipeline Stake from EQT for $3.5 Billion

    October 30, 2024October 30, 2024

Last Friday, Reuters reported that sources “familiar with the matter” whispered to its reporters that private equity firm Blackstone is “in advanced talks” to acquire minority stakes in the interstate natural gas pipelines now owned by EQT Corp. (following its purchase of Equitrans Midstream) for a whopping $3.5 billion. The deal would help EQT reduce the debt it accumulated from buying Equitrans. Utica Shale Play Resurgence is Real – It’s Time to Get Excited!

    October 30, 2024October 30, 2024

Portrait Photo of Excited Man in Blue T-shirt Standing In Front of White BackgroundGuy Coviello, President and CEO of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce, is jazzed about the resurging Utica Shale and says it’s time to get excited about it. In a recent column, Coviello said it’s time “to once again embrace our friends in the oil and gas industry, for our policymakers to invest in the infrastructure necessary to enrich our Valley, for community leaders to roll out red carpets, and for government at all levels to keep the regulatory environment safe and friendly.” What has Coviello so jazzed, especially for the northern Utica? We can sum it up in one word: Oil. Read More “Utica Shale Play Resurgence is Real – It’s Time to Get Excited!”

Antis Opposed to Gas-Fired Plant Near Richmond Hold Fake Hearing

    October 30, 2024October 30, 2024

Dominion Energy plans to build four small “peaker” electric generating plants in Chesterfield County, VA, near Richmond (see Dominion Plans to Build 1,000-MW Gas Peaker Plant Near Richmond, VA). The Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center (CERC) calls for building four 250-megawatt gas-fired power plants (1,000 MW total) that can jump into action during the coldest and hottest days of the year to help supply enough electricity for 250,000 homes—to keep the lights on because solar and wind are not up to the task. In early June, we told you that Dominion was actively looking at changing the location of the proposed project to locate the peakers at an existing power-generating site where two gas-fired plants now operate (see Dominion Plan to Move Location of 4 Va. Gas-Fired Peakers Advances). Dominion made the change in location official in August (see Dominion Officially Changes Location of Chesterfield Peaker Plant). Last night, a local anti group calling itself Friends of Chesterfield held a fake “hearing” to bloviate against the project that would keep their lights on. Biden-Harris DOE Approves LNG Exports from TX Using ISO Containers

    October 30, 2024October 30, 2024

Here is an interesting story about the Biden-Harris Department of Energy (DOE) “pause” in approving new LNG export projects. You may recall that in January, the Biden-Harris DOE announced it would “pause” any approvals for new LNG export plants (currently 15 requests in the pipeline) for at least one year while D.C. swampies fart around pretending to figure out how to measure global warming as a new consideration for whether or not to approve such projects (see White House Makes it Official – Biden Declares War on LNG Exports). It was a purely political move aimed at currying favor with the radical left. A project not on the list of 15 that uses a different export method (ISO containers)—yet will still export a significant amount of LNG—received DOE approval two days ago. Other LNG exporters should be angry. Read More “Biden-Harris DOE Approves LNG Exports from TX Using ISO Containers”

NYC Comptroller Seeks to Divest Fossil Fuels from Pension Funds

    October 30, 2024October 30, 2024

Here we go again. New York City Comptroller Brad Lander has put forth a proposal that would stop the city’s three pension funds from future private equity and infrastructure portfolio investments in midstream and downstream fossil fuel infrastructure like pipelines and liquefied natural gas terminals. The prohibition would apply to New York City’s Employees’ Retirement System, Teachers’ Retirement System, and Board of Education Retirement System should their pension boards approve the decision. But here’s the thing… In May 2023, workers from those same three pension funds sued the funds to stop them from divesting from fossil energy companies (see 3 NYC Pension Funds Sued by Workers for Divesting from Fossil Fuels). What happened to the lawsuit? Massive Data Center with 3,500 MW Gas-Fired Plant Proposed for Va.

    October 29, 2024October 29, 2024

We are super excited to bring you the news that Balico, LLC has proposed building a gigantic, massive data center in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Sound familiar? We’ll get to the location in a moment. The data center would be powered by its own on-site gas-fired power plant complex, with 15 30-MW Mitsubishi gas turbines. Truly incredible! We have not heard of a gas-fired power plant this big in the entire country. It’s twice as big as most large gas-fired plants. Pittsylvania County is where the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) terminates and connects with Williams’ Transco pipeline. Both MVP and Transco flow Marcellus/Utica molecules. This massive data center will use enormous amounts of M-U molecules if built. It feels like Christmas came early! Read More “Massive Data Center with 3,500 MW Gas-Fired Plant Proposed for Va.”

Weather Whacks NYMEX Futures Price – Lost $0.25 Yesterday to $2.31

    October 29, 2024October 29, 2024

Yesterday, the NYMEX natural gas futures price for the “front month” (November) contract and the next contract in line to take over after today (the December contract) both dropped like a rock. The November contract (called the prompt month) dropped 25.1 cents to close at $2.309/MMBtu. The December contract, which becomes the prompt month tomorrow, dropped 22.9 cents to close at $2.863. Why the drop? It depends on who you ask, but the warm weather in the northeast seems to be one of the primary reasons. Read More “Weather Whacks NYMEX Futures Price – Lost $0.25 Yesterday to $2.31”

PA DEP Still Hasn’t Cleared 33% of Permit Backlog (640 Permits)

    October 29, 2024November 11, 2024

Permitting in Pennsylvania overseen by the Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been a hot mess for years. A Chapter 102 Erosion and Sedimentation permit sometimes takes two, three, or even six months for approval — instead of the law-mandated 14 days. It got so bad that in the fall of 2019, PA State Sen. Gene Yaw introduced a bill to allow third-party reviews of these permits to speed up approvals (see PA Sen. Yaw Intros Bill to Allow 3rd Party Review of Erosion Permits). In March of this year, the DEP said it was making progress in reducing turnaround times for permits, including Chapter 102 permits (see PA DEP Claims Progress in Reducing Out-of-Control Permit Backlog). In April, the DEP launched yet another initiative to reduce the time required to issue new Chapter 102 permits (see PA DEP Makes Effort to Speed Up Approvals for Erosion Permits). In July, the DEP claimed it had reduced its massive backlog of permit applications by 56% since the end of last year (see PA DEP Claims it Reduced Permits Backlog by Half Since 2023). The agency is back to tout that the backlog has now been whittled down by 67% (another 11% beyond July). What that means is that 33% of the backlog remains. U.S. and M-U Ethane Production Reached Record High in 1H24

    October 29, 2024October 29, 2024

U.S. ethane production increased steadily over the last decade and reached a record of 3.0 million barrels per day (b/d) in May 2024. Ethane production in the first half of 2024 (1H24) averaged a record 2.8 million b/d, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Petroleum Supply Monthly. Ethane production in the Marcellus/Utica region (called the Appalachian No. 1 refining district), which straddles most of the Appalachian Basin production area in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, increased during 1H24, averaging 327,000 b/d, up from 292,000 b/d in 1H23. 5 Dem Governors (Including Shapiro) Blame PJM for THEIR Policies

    October 29, 2024October 29, 2024

Ever notice how politicians like to blame others when their own policies create havoc and chaos? When you block new gas-fired power plants that provide more electricity for growing demand and pretend unreliable renewables will step in to save the day, there are negative consequences, like the price of electricity soaring through the roof (see Dems’ Crushing Regs Cause PJM Electric Prices to Soar 933% in 2025). Five Democrat governors who don’t like the consequences of *their* actions sent a letter to the head of the PJM grid, lecturing him to adopt more crazy policies to try and fix the high prices that they created! NETL Research Says Hydrogen Can Safely Be Stored Under Shale

    October 29, 2024October 29, 2024

Hydrogen is all the rage, at least in the D.C. swamp. Joe Biden and his sidekick Kamala Harris held a Hydrogen Hunger Games contest and in 2013 awarded seven proposed projects around the country with a total jackpot of $7 billion. Among the winners was the West Virginia-led Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2), which is a project that will use Marcellus/Utica natural gas as the feedstock to produce “blue” hydrogen, which is hydrogen made from natgas where carbon dioxide from the process is captured and either used or stored underground (see Hydrogen Hub Winners Announced – WV Takes Prize in M-U Region). There are a lot of questions about using hydrogen to produce energy and trying to replace natural gas with hydrogen. One of those questions, which has gone unanswered (until now), is whether you can store hydrogen underground like natural gas. The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has an answer. New Report Says U.S. Dominance in LNG a “Generational Opportunity”

    October 29, 2024October 29, 2024

Last week, National Center for Energy Analytics (NCEA) Senior Fellow Tristan Abbey published a report examining the politicization of liquid natural gas (LNG) exports and recommending three pathways to ensure the United States maintains and expands the economic and geopolitical benefits from its dominant position in the global LNG market. In “A Generational Opportunity: Achieving U.S. Dominance in Global LNG” (full copy below), Abbey explores the history of LNG exports, the mechanisms by which the U.S. ascended to primacy, and the urgency in pursuing reform to capture a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity. PA Drops Another Rig to 17-Year Low; National Rig Count Even @ 585

    October 28, 2024October 28, 2024

The realignment we spoke of several weeks ago about Pennsylvania losing rigs to its neighbors has deepened. Last week, PA lost another rig, going from 13 rigs down to 12 rigs, while Ohio picked up one rig and now has 10 active rigs. West Virginia also operated 10 rigs last week. Just two months ago (as of August 23), PA operated 21 rigs, OH had 9 rigs, and WV had just 5 rigs. This is a massive realignment away from PA to its neighbors. According to Reuters, PA’s rig count is at a 17-year (!) low. What the heck is going on with the mighty PA Marcellus? Read More “PA Drops Another Rig to 17-Year Low; National Rig Count Even @ 585”
