A brand new massive LNG export project has been announced for southern Louisiana. Argent LNG, LLC, a privately-owned company, announced a proposal to construct, own, and operate the Argent LNG Project, a world-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in Port Fourchon, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. The plant would produce 25 million tons per annum (MTPA), ranking it among the top LNG export facilities in the country. The project will connect with the Kinetica interstate pipeline system, which in turn connects to the Tennessee Gas Pipeline (TGP) system. U.S. Rig Count Adds 1 @ 549; Marcellus/Utica Unchanged @ 37

    November 17, 2025November 17, 2025

Last week, the Baker Hughes U.S. national rig count gained rigs for the second week in a row. The national count increased by one rig, rising from 548 to 549. The BH rig count has added rigs in four of the last five weeks. Rigs in the Marcellus/Utica remained the same last week at a combined 37, the same number for seven weeks in a row. Pennsylvania remained unchanged at 17 active rigs (seven weeks in a row). Ohio was the same at 13 rigs (eight weeks in a row). And West Virginia maintained its 7 rigs, which it has operated since May 30 (25 weeks in a row). There were 23 rigs targeting the Marcellus and 14 targeting the Utica. 24 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Nov 3 – 9

    November 14, 2025November 14, 2025

You knew the number of new permits issued in the M-U would come back down to earth sooner or later. Last week it happened. After three consecutive weeks with numbers of 37, 39, and 37, the number of new permits issued fell to 24 last week. Still respectable, but not in the coveted 30s. Pennsylvania issued 16 new permits last week, up from 13 the prior week. Ohio issued 6 new permits, down from 8 the prior week. West Virginia was shut out, issuing no new permits last week, which was the main reason why the number fell precipitously. Read More “24 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Nov 3 – 9”

N.C. Does a 180-Turn, Issues Water Permit for MVP Southgate

    November 14, 2025November 14, 2025

We continue to win so much, it feels strange. But hey, we can get used to it! Back in April 2021, we reported that the leftist Democrats who run the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) had, for the third time, rejected giving the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) Southgate project a necessary Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 401 water quality certification permit (see NC DEQ Rejects Permit for MVP Southgate Pipe Third Time). The project went dormant after that, until the mainline MVP itself was built. After all, if there’s no MVP, there’s no need to build the Southgate extension. MVP finally finished building and went online in June 2024 (see Confirmed: M-U Gas Now Flowing Through Mountain Valley Pipeline). And now, the unthinkable (for the left) has happened: The NCDEQ issued a Section 401 permit to MVP Southgate, a 31-mile extension of MVP into North Carolina. Read More “N.C. WV’s First-Ever Gas-Fired Power Plant to Begin Construction

    November 14, 2025December 17, 2025

NOTE: This post was updated 12/17/25 to reflect that there are, in fact, four existing (but small) gas-fired power plants in WV, built years before the shale energy revolution. We have the list—two in Wayne County, one in Marshall County, and one in Pleasants County— embedded below. Our thanks to a faithful reader for alerting us to this information.

How many times over the years have we reported on (and cheerleaded for) gas-fired power plants to get built in West Virginia? MANY times. Dozens, maybe hundreds of posts about this topic. Yet, in all the time we’ve been writing MDN (since January 2009), not a single, solitary gas-fired power plant has been built in the Mountain State. Not one new plant! Until now. Energy investment firm Blackstone announced yesterday it has made a final investment decision (FID) to move forward with building the $1.2 billion Wolf Summit Energy Center power plant in Harrison County, WV. Homer City Project Could Get First Data Center Tenant by Dec. 31

    November 14, 2025November 14, 2025

In April, Knighthead Capital Management, Homer City Redevelopment (HCR), and Kiewit Power Constructors Co. announced a plan to convert the former Homer City Generating Station, previously the largest coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania (Indiana County, 50 miles east of Pittsburgh) into a more than 3,200-acre natural gas-powered data center campus, designed to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (see Largest Gas-Fired Power Plant in the U.S. Coming in Western Pa.). The new gas-fired plant will be THE LARGEST gas-fired power plant in the country, capable of producing up to 4.5 gigawatts (4,500 MW) of electricity. The project managers aren’t wasting any time. There is such a strong interest in data centers locating at the site that the first official tenant will likely be signed by the end of this year, says Robin Gorman, the vice president of Homer City Redevelopment. Ohio Bill Updating Law Governing O&G Wells Gets Pushback

    November 14, 2025November 14, 2025

One month ago, we reported that Ohio Republican Senators had introduced Senate Bill (SB) 219, the first significant update to Ohio’s oil and gas laws since the Kasich administration more than a decade ago (see Ohio Bill Makes Major Changes to Law Governing O&G Wells). SB 219, introduced by Sen. Al Landis, aims to reform Ohio’s orphaned oil and gas well program. The bill proposes establishing the Oil and Gas Resolution and Remediation Fund, funded by filing fees and penalties, to protect orphan well funds from being raided by the state legislature (as often happens now). The bill also streamlines notification procedures for abandoned wells, accelerates drilling by eliminating the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) discretion to deny expedited project reviews, and makes road-use agreements with local governments voluntary and capped at three years. It won’t surprise you that anti-fossil fuel nutters are pushing back. It may surprise you that some county leaders and landowners are also pushing back. U.S. Natural Gas Prices Rise Unevenly Across Different Sectors

    November 14, 2025November 14, 2025

U.S. retail natural gas prices are rising across all sectors due to higher wholesale costs, particularly the Henry Hub spot price, which is expected to increase by 58% in 2025 compared to 2024. This increase translates unevenly to consumers. Electric power plants and the industrial sector are expected to see the most significant price hikes, forecast at 37% and 21%, respectively, as their costs are more directly tied to fluctuations in wholesale prices. Residential and commercial customers, however, are expected to experience smaller increases of 4% each. This smaller impact is due to utilities adjusting their rates more gradually, and wholesale commodity costs constitute a smaller portion of the final retail bill for these sectors, which also include significant fixed charges for transportation and distribution. VICTORY! PA Budget Deal Kills RGGI Carbon Tax for Good

    November 13, 2025November 13, 2025

For seven looooooong years, Pennsylvania Senate Republicans (and MDN, we modestly add) have fought against enrolling the Keystone State in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) carbon tax scheme. RGGI taxes gas- and coal-fired power plants, charging them so much per ton of carbon dioxide emitted. The aim is to eliminate these sources and replace them with unreliable renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. PA’s former failed Governor, Tom Wolf, tried to force the state to join RGGI via an executive order (see Gov. Wolf Goes Bonkers: EO Destroying Gas-Fired Elec, Carbon Tax). His failed replacement, Josh Shapiro, also tried to force the state into the compact (see PA Gov. Shapiro Proves He’s Radical Left – Appeals RGGI Decision). As of yesterday, with a newly passed and adopted budget deal (four months late), RGGI is now permanently gone, never to be resurrected. It is a complete and total victory for brave Senate Republicans who held the line. Hats off! Read More “VICTORY! PA Budget Deal Kills RGGI Carbon Tax for Good”

PHMSA Investigates Leaking Ethane from Cove Point LNG Tanks

    November 13, 2025November 13, 2025

Federal safety officials are investigating leaks of ethane near two small underground storage tanks at the Cove Point LNG export terminal in Maryland and have requested that they be taken out of service immediately, citing potential safety concerns. The cause of the leak appears to be related to the tanks or their piping. However, Cove Point LNG, a facility owned and operated by a Berkshire Hathaway Energy subsidiary, maintains that the 40-gallon tanks are “safe to operate under the current conditions” and that the leaks have never posed an unsafe condition for employees or the community. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued a proposed safety order in mid-October, and the company has requested an informal consultation to discuss it. PA DEP Signals Title V Air Permit for Long-Running SWPA Power Plant

    November 13, 2025November 13, 2025

Despite claims by anti-fossil fuelers that the Tenaska Westmoreland Generating Station in southwestern PA would spread disease and death if it were built, it’s been up and running since 2018, producing power and generating money for both its builders and the community. Oh, and everyone is in good health. However, the plant has been operating under a state permit since it opened. It needs a federal Title V permit for long-term operation. The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is the agency that issues such a permit and is proposing to do so, which (of course) has antis’ knickers in a twist. In particular, antis are complaining that there are no public complaining sessions scheduled. Read More “PA DEP Signals Title V Air Permit for Long-Running SWPA Power Plant”

Antis Sue ODNR for Approving 2 Injection Wells Near Marietta, OH

    November 13, 2025November 13, 2025

Since August, we’ve reported about an ongoing war of words between the City of Marietta officials (mostly Republicans) and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) over a permit for a fifth wastewater injection well located close to the city (see Marietta, OH Officials Ask ODNR to Deny Permit for Injection Well). In September, the ODNR rejected Marietta’s appeal and went ahead and issued a permit for the well (see ODNR Rejects Marietta Hearing Request, Issues Injection Well Permit). Not happy with the outcome, in October, the Marietta City Council passed three resolutions to block new injection wells in the area (see Marietta, OH, Passes 3 Resolutions Against Injection Wells). And now, a state environmental group, the Buckeye Environmental Network, backed by lawyers from the controversial Earthjustice, has sued the ODNR over permitting the new well and one other injection well in the Marietta area. NY’s Jan. 1 Ban on New Gas Hookups Delayed by Lawsuit

    November 13, 2025November 13, 2025

In January 2023, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a leftist Democrat, floated a plan to ban natural gas hookups in every single new home and business across the “Empire” State (see NY Gov. Hochul Loses Her Mind – Wants to Ban Gas in New Buildings). She even wanted to ban gas in existing homes, but that was too much to stomach even for NY’s leftwing Democrats (see New York Legislators Block Hochul NatGas Ban for Existing Homes). As part of the 2023-2024 budget deal, Hochul got her statewide ban on new hookups (see NY State has Fallen – Gas Stoves & Peaker Plants Banned in Budget). So, beginning Jan. 1, 2026, new homes (or businesses) in New York State will not be allowed to connect to an existing natural gas pipeline system. Except Hochul is now backpeddling, using a lawsuit as an excuse to delay implementing the new law. Read More “NY’s Jan. 1 Ban on New Gas Hookups Delayed by Lawsuit”
