AAF Fails to Get Many to Oppose Barged Frack Wastewater

Americans Against Fracking (AAF), a loose confederation of virulent anti-drilling groups who oppose fossil fuels and their use in society, has issued a press release to commemorate/mourn the closing of the comment period on whether or not the U.S. Coast Guard and a myriad of other federal agencies should allow barging of frack wastewater on the Ohio River. Even though AAF has multiple groups backing it–including the odious and misnamed Food & Water Watch–they were only able to get 3,400 people to sign form letters opposing federal approval for barging of frack wastewater. PA DOH “Improves” Enviro Health Complaints Process

A completely manufactured smear campaign by anti-drilling PBS reporters at Pennsylvania StateImpact continues to be joined by other willing, colluding accomplices in mainstream media outlets who accuse the PA Department of Health of either ignoring or intentionally hushing up so-called complaints. MDN previously outlined the chronology of the propaganda campaign by StateImpact Pennsylvania and the pushback by Secretary of Health Michael Wolf (see PA’s Sec of Health Fires Back at Reckless Accusations Against Dept). Because anti-drillers believe they have a winning issue (completely divorced from reality, but that doesn’t stop them), they continue to hammer away. And so, finally, Wolf (and Gov. EIP Uses False Data to Smear Frackers, Inflated Claims of Diesel Use

The anti-drilling Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) is having a little integrity issue of their own. EIP issued a false report on Wednesday that purports to “out” drilling companies that have, or continue, to use diesel fuel in their fracking fluids. PAI Says 3rd Enviro Group – PennFuture – Abandoned CSSD

The shadowy (we’d call it sinister) “non-profit” anti-drilling organization called the Public Accountability Initiative (PAI) released a “report” last week targeting the Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD) once again, claiming it’s a front group for the shale drilling industry. The PAI was previously responsible for closing a new shale research institute at University at Buffalo (see Univ at Buffalo President Shuts Down (Censors) Shale Institute) and for giving researchers at the University of Texas a black eye in mainstream media (see Soros-backed PAI Makes University of Texas Look Foolish). Earthworks Attacks PA DEP, Post-Gazette Gives Them Helpful Hand

The increasingly anti-drilling Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PPG) has once again written an article that is woefully lacking. MDN has written numerous times about the Earthworks, an virulent anti-drilling and anti-fossil fuel organization. Based in Washington, D.C., Earthworks hasn’t met a molecule of carbon they like–perhaps to the point of self-loathing the carbon in their own bodies (the human body is made up of 18.5% carbon). Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin Pair of Drive-by Anti-Drilling Articles

Yet another pair of drive-by articles on shale drilling appeared in the Sunday edition of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin. First, a front page story built on a false premise–that the recent sham report by the politically ambitious (and anti-drilling) Auditor General of Pennsylvania issued three weeks ago contains “lessons to be learned” for New York. Pennsylvania’s anti-drilling Democrat Auditor General Eugene DePasquale took office promising to conduct an anal exam of the Dept. of Environmental Protection. Apparently he couldn’t find good dirt on the agency from 2012 onward, so he went back in time using the wayback machine to dig up old news and try to construct a report that says the PA DEP has big problems (see Anti-Drilling PA Auditor General Criticizes DEP in “Report”). That sham report, written by a man who’s seeking to make a name for himself so he can run for governor of PA in the future (and someone who heavily promoted wind farms, the energy source that “lost” to shale gas), is used as the basis for an article by a Gannett reporter to further the meme that shale drilling in NY is too risky and should not happen…

Fourth Time the Charm for Youngstown Frack Ban Measure?

You’ve got to hand it to those anti-drillers in Youngstown. When anti-fracking insanity takes hold–it goes deep. Anti-drillers have successfully gotten enough signatures to put a ballot measure before voters three times now. The measure would enact a ban on fracking in Youngstown. Not that anyone actually wants to drill in the City of Youngstown. However, passing such a ban would a) force some employers to relocate out of town (not an empty threat, they’ve said it many times), and b) send a signal loud and clear that Youngstown wants to drop out of the flourishing Utica Shale bonanza taking place in the state. New Heinz-Funded “Study” on Marcellus Boom/Bust in SWPA

Washington & Jefferson College, located in Washington, PA (Pittsburgh suburb) has a Center for Energy Policy & Management–which makes sense since Washington County, PA sits in the middle of the wet gas Marcellus drilling zone. W&J recently teamed up with the Washington, DC-based Environmental Law Institute (ELI) to study the “boom and bust” cycle that communities face with resource extraction like the Marcellus Shale. The thought was to produce a document–in this case a series of documents–that can guide local and state politicians as they plan for the future. How can, and even *can* a community avoid a “bust” after a huge boom? That’s what the documents aim to answer. Maryland Gov. O’Malley Spins Delay on Shale Drilling as Positive

Outgoing Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (Democrat), perhaps the worst governor vis–à–vis leadership that Maryland has had in the past two generations, attended a 6-Dem governor “discussion” at the liberal Aspen Institute in Colorado on Saturday (no doubt on Maryland taxpayers’ dime). The discussion was nominally to yak about education, a topic Dems think they own (unfortunately our kids are getting dumber year after year). Towns that Ban Fracking Could be Bankrupted by Takings Lawsuits

New York townships that recently won the right to outright ban shale drilling with a 3-2 majority vote by a town board may want to rethink their ill-advised votes. Due to a tip from a sharp MDN reader, we bring you a press release from the National Association of Royalty Owners (NARO) about recent court decisions in Colorado. Similar to the New York case, some municipalities in CO have attempted outright bans of fracking–and those cases, contrary to what happened in NY–are being lost. (Certainly not the first time NY has been out of step on important issues.) One study mentioned in the NARO announcement says that bans and moratoria in Boulder County, CO could result in more than one billion dollars of “takings” lawsuits by landowners. In other words, the lawsuits will bankrupt the towns and villages stupid enough to enact a ban. Are you listening Dryden and Middlefield? You won round one in NY–but the battle is far from over and taxpayers in your towns may one day rue your decision to act foolishly to ban fracking…

Anti-Drillers to Push Their Message at Binghamton Spiedie Fest

They want a 2 mile exclusion zone around the school to deny landowners the right to allow Marcellus Shale drilling on or under their land. State law already prohibits drilling within 500 feet of a school. Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline Will Get Environmental Impact Statement

Last week regulators at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) announced they will perform a full blown environmental impact statement (EIS) on Williams’ proposed $3 billion Atlantic Sunrise Expansion pipeline project that will expand the Transco pipeline in Pennsylvania in order to feed cheap, abundant Marcellus Shale gas into a pipeline running to southern states. MDN has a copy of the FERC “Notice of Intent” to conduct an EIS. As part of the review process, FERC will hold four public hearings throughout PA next week to get feedback on the project…

12 US Companies Commit to Pay Sky High Rates for Renewable Energy

The following public announcement is a complete and total exercise in public relations by some of America’s largest companies–not meant to be anything other than a bunch of hot air with no real results. Companies including Mars, Sprint, Walmart, GM and Facebook have allowed their brands and logos to be (ab)used by the WWF (no, not the World Wrestling Federation but the World Wildlife Fund, although they’re very similar) to say “ain’t enough renewable energy out they’a for us all to use, we need more.” Which is, of course, a lark. A sham. A scam. Renewables won’t be able to compete with fossil fuels for at least the next 50 years, maybe 100 years–and efforts to “demand” more of it are just so much hot air…

What’s Really in the Crosshairs in New England?

The headline for a story in the Worcester (MA) Telegram & Gazette blares, “Natural gas pipeline expansion has Worcester and surrounding communities in crosshairs.” Yes, bet you didn’t know that those dastardly pipelines, like the Tennessee Gas Pipeline with its plan to deliver much-needed natural gas to New England, “targets” communities. You know, like a gun? Bang bang. That’s how environmentalist wacko editors write headlines. If you read far enough down in the Worcester story you’ll find a sad bit of news: comedian Bill Cosby is against the pipeline expansion (comes too close to his multi-million dollar estate, apparently). It’s not shocking that a celebrity is completely ignorant about such an issue–happens all the time (a la Susan Sarandon and Yoko Ono’s infamous fossil-fuel belching bus tour of Susquehanna County, PA, see Looney Toons Anti-Fracking Celebrities Visit Montrose, PA). What is shocking, however, is the massive willful ignorance of a former member of the Bolton Conservation Commission who says he doesn’t think natural gas is any cleaner than coal for generating electricity.
